After settling for a CL spot this year where does that leave us in terms of next years target? Hypothetically if we finish next year in a CL spot with no silverware would it be fair to say goodbye to LVG or will we find excuses as to why he didn't succeed such as 'we had over 50 injuries', 'our team is still demoralised from Moyes' or 'the managers still learning his best 11 and the universal game of football as he has only managed in other Western leagues'?

I will probably get some stick here but for me next season with the squad we have and the inevitability we will add to it anything less than a sustained title challenge to the end, quarter finals of the CL and a domestic cup or if the other first two objectives are completed even at least a domestic final cup appearance is not an unrealistic target.

If we get top four this season and build the way the club are expecting to during the summer whilst keeping De Gea, then I fully expect us to be challenging for the title next season. If we didn't improve on this season I would replace the manager in an heartbeat.

If we get CL this season, I would expect a title challenge at the very least.

Agree1 Disagree0

29 Mar 2015 10:13:56
I think there are a few factors that determine the target for next season, how we do over the summer will be important, if de gea leaves who we replaced him with and whether we sign the correct players in the correct places early enough in the summer for them to settle in over pre season. Once we know this then we will have a realistic target, but I would imagine the target is to make sure we get the players that will help us challenge early enough in the summer.

You seem to have decided that 50 injuries at the beginning of the season isn't a good enough reason for the team to not play how you wanted them to, whereas i see it as quite a major issue that decimated most of the plans before Christmas, so if we had major injury problems to key players again next year then your aims might not be possible.

I would think we will have a good chance of challenging chelsea next year at the very least, the champions league is a tricky one but I would expect us to get through the group then it depends on the draw, I wouldn't fancy us to beat Barcelona, Munich or madrid over two legs but we should be able to get to the quarters without meeting any of them like you suggested.

Agree5 Disagree11

29 Mar 2015 11:00:48
One thing for sure is that the players we need to sign in summer need to be bought in order to fit the formation we are going with. Too often have players been played out of position because we quite simply can't fit them all in.

If it is a 4-3-3 we are going for then a RB, CB(2), CM and at a winger are needed in terms of first team players. Clyne, Hummels, Naingolan and Bale - something like that would fill a need. We then could use one or two squad players like Depay, Ings etc. However, if it was me I'd be throwing money at Spurs for Kane as well.

Agree2 Disagree0

29 Mar 2015 12:25:19
50 injuries was a major factor. I also note since the boss replaced the first team physio the injuries have cleared up somewhat, even with the usual suspects like jones and smalling.

I would expect a league challenge, the confidence is back, players like Herrera have settled. The only worries I have regards transfers is the future of de gea and and whether or not lvg an woody end up arguing on targets.

Agree2 Disagree1

29 Mar 2015 12:26:39
O and fresh i'd like to see Kane do it consistently for a second season first. I think next season some teams may figure him out. I'd hate to be done by levy for a flash in the pan.

Agree2 Disagree1

29 Mar 2015 13:00:59
Let's nip one thing in the bud it wasn't 50 injuires at the same time I was being very sarcastic.

GDS your first paragraph looks to me like your already making excuses. If De Gea leaves, he leaves. We have Valdes - WC, CL winner - to take over or a new keeper will be signed and if all goes to plan tactically he shouldn't have to do half the work DDG has done this season.

Secondly you say a lot depends on getting the 'correct players through the door' which is fine as we would all like the team strengthened but I am a believer that this squad is good enough to challenge the way it is if some lads up their game like they have done in the last two games against tough opposition. What if we spend heavily on the 'wrong' players? That would also be on the managers head.

Agree3 Disagree2

29 Mar 2015 13:25:15
It is not only the injuries that have been a problem but having Rooney, Falcao, RVP and ADM's salaries to meet, the manager simply had to start out with the presumption that they would be playing in most of the matches. Add to that Fellaini and Mata, both expensive acquisitions, and one can empathize with the dilemma - built-in unbalance. Now we have but one goal and that is to make it into the CL, and I would expect LVG to make no further compromises.

After the debilitating experience of last year, if we make top 4, it has to be considered a relative success, despite the unerring sense that we should have done better, especially in the first 10 games when we had a relatively easy schedule. And if we accomplish that minimum goal then the manager deserves an opportunity to continue the squad's development.

From my point of view I hope he will decide that we need to get rid of RVP. If the terms of purchase and salary remain as high as previously reported, then the same goes for Falcao, but at 20m and a lower salary I would risk it. He is still relatively young and could yet have a future. One way or another we need one additional top class goal scorer. We also need to be grooming a replacement for Michael Carrick. As for the defence, now that it's more settled, it looks more comfortable than it did early in the season, so my opinion is one more RB and CB. So, yes, we could be 4 players off having a team that's ready to compete with the best.

Agree0 Disagree0

29 Mar 2015 13:48:20
JMB,

Excuses about what exactly? You asked a question as to what the target should be next year and I answered it, what exactly am I making excuses for? To win a league title you need a bit of luck and things to go right for you, there are other teams with players with similar ability to us so it can come down to the small things to decide the destination of the title. We will be much better equipped next season to challenge for the title but so will chelsea and will be a team who have just won it, so it can come down to smaller things like number of injuries and whether signings settle quick.

You seem to live in a football manager world, all the bad things are the managers fault, all the good things are just luck and anything that goes wrong are just excuses. You are beginning to get quite boring.

Do you think valdes is as good as de gea? I take it from your post you do, which is laughable. Of course losing de gea would make a difference, otherwise we would just stick Ben Amos in net and win the league anyway.

Agree4 Disagree7

29 Mar 2015 13:49:58
And 'lets get one thing clear' I never suggested the injuries were at the same time, they were mainly before christmas though and decimated our plans whether you like it or not. You have decided injuries don't make a difference to a season whereas anyone with common sense knows that they do, especially to key players.

Agree6 Disagree7

29 Mar 2015 14:41:23
GDS - you have just said that 'a few factors will determine our targets for next year' then rhymed off these factors as being De Gea, a good pre-season and some decent signings. So if De Gea leaves then we shouldn't target the title? If we have a poor pre-season we should drop our target to just a CL spot? If we don't sign anyone then our target with the squad we have should be to replicate this season? Give me a break.

All those stipulations you have made are irrelevant to our targets. Our targets should be set out on July 1st and if we have a few issues regarding players or transfer dealings along the way then so be it. Yes in this league a little bit of luck goes a long way but that is not what you said in your first post, you said if certain scenarios play out we should alter our targets.

I think it's you who lives in a fantasy world. We are one of three biggest teams in the WORLD and have one of the best squads in the league. We pay premium ticket prices, have an abundance of talent and deserve to be up their challenging for the title. All this and your telling me we have to scale back our targets if we lose a goalie, lose some friendlies and fail to add to an already star studded squad. That's just downright delusional.

I think Valdes is capable of playing in goal for us yes. Did I say he is better? Of course I want to keep De Gea but things change quickly in this game. Do you expect the keeper next year (who ever that may be) to individually save as many points as De Gea did this season? If you do then that's laughable as surely your hero LVG should have the defence sorted after a year in the job.

Everyone has injuries, not just United. What key players really spent lengthy time on the treatment table this year other than Carrick? Rooney? No. Herrera? No. Mata? No. Blind? No. Felliani? No. Young? No. DDG? No. Your point about injuries is invalid because every team gets them FACT!

Agree2 Disagree0

29 Mar 2015 17:40:07
Europe will be to blame next season if we aren't fighting for the title. There will be some excuse, every club has them, but many of our fans seem to have forgotten who they support - we are not Arsenal, excuses like this are for the weak, even Arsenal fans have gotten fed up of using them!

I hope we have a good summer and he has learnt to pick players on form and to stop meddling with the system. Clean slate next season, but we have to stop making excuses for the team and manager, it really hasn't been good enough all season and our expectations shouldn't drop with the performance. He is paid to manage problems, he hasn't only added to them.

Just wondering what people's views was on Nani coming back to us next year. He seems, to be playing well and if we do go to a 433 would be well suited to it.
Yes we would still need an additional winger but would he add depth to the squad and be an asset.look at the turn around in young.

Believable0 Unbelievable4

28 Mar 2015 21:35:44
He's had enough chances ild try get as much as we could.

And I agree the turn around with young, but young has been more consistent and offers a lot more than nani

I like Nani, because he is a real goal scoring threat. We all know he can be frustrating with his decision making. But my question is would he be content to come back and be a squad player again? Not sure he is the type.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Mar 2015 23:20:38
If LVG can get the best out of Young then why shouldn't he try with Nani who has heaps more ability? If LVG can replicate what he has done with the so called under performers such as Young, Felliani, Valencia etc then Nani could actually come of age and we could be in for some fine displays from the Portuguese.

Agree4 Disagree2

28 Mar 2015 23:43:06
I suspect we will see Nani sold and Depay signed. I think if LvG thought he could work with Nani, then he wouldn't have sent him out on loan.

I think the rise in form of Harry Kane and to an extent I would say Paddy McNair.

Kane was always good for Spurs from 18s to 21s, but you never looked at him in a light that you would think he is where he is now, and although McNair hasn't had success to his level, I think everyone who has followed the youth players over the last few years would say McNair wasn't even a guaranteed starter.

I think more youth players need a chance to come into training with the first teams, because these two have shone that playing with better players has made tuem better.

We always give chances to the "stars" of the youth teams, and it almost always turns out to be a case of big fish, small pond. and when they make the step up they are nowhere to be seen.

Obviously there are cases such as Pogba, but the majority don't have his success.

Any thoughts?

Competition is the problem. I am confident Wilson would have kicked on, but do you gamble on Wilson over RVP, Falcao and Rooney, what do you say to those players on £200k+ a week? You simply can't risk it as the league is too competitive. For all the praise of McNair, how many games has he really played for the first team out of choice, in fact how many games full stop and in the position he will play in?

Kane, Sterling, even Ibe have done well because the other options for the clubs in question are very limited, look at Zaha recently, instead we have Mata out wide who has done great, but kind of is more suitable to the middle. Also Europa league helped Kane, he wasn't in contention until he started pulling up trees in that competition. I am confident we would have seen progression from Januzaj, Wilson, McNair and even Perreira had we had more cup matches and Europe.

This season is a write off for me, limited if any youth progression (McNair isn't a RB), and Januzaj, Wilson, Blackett, Perriera and others have hardly had a kick, despite all the injuries and praise LVG gets for blooding youth. Due to his poor start he ruined the year for the youth in my view and wasn't helped by the lack of Europe.

I wrote a long post about this around 3 months ago, the youth development should be left to other clubs, because we end up ruining players 9/10 times at the top level due to the strength of squads and competitiveness. Too much money at the real top.

Agree1 Disagree7

Beast we all get your obvious disdain for our manager but geez do u have to turn everything into a bashing of the manager?

This topic is a wider issue than just United yet all your replies seem to do is find a way to bash the manager and push again ure OPINION of him.

This season is a write off? Why?

But I'm sure u will find some way of turning it into another lvg bashing post.

After all we have been blessed in recent seasons with the constant carousel of top draw youth we have bought through.

Agree3 Disagree0

28 Mar 2015 15:12:31
I'm saying that youth haven't had a chance, they don't get a chance with City or Chelsea either because the league is too competitive.

I don't think our youth have played enough games this season for a lot of reasons. LVG hasn't played them when left with a choice because we have so few games and he can't risk it. Therefore we shouldn't bother with youth and just buy payers that are ready.

Why don't you stop picking and choosing what parts of my posts you respond to and look at it as a whole.

How the hell am I blaming LVG for no Europe this season?

This season is a write off because we have only just found a system, we are out of all cups and can't win the league. What exactly is there to play for? wait there top 4, Arsenal fans alert we are nicking their goals.

No youth development, Shaw, ADM, Falcao may as well not have signed. Our players have all got a year older and we don't look like we have progressed. Fair points I think.

Agree0 Disagree3

28 Mar 2015 16:04:27
Maybe the fact there simply not good enough to get first team action is the reason they don't get a game

Its different at the lower end teams because they don't have the same calibre of players to fight against for a position

Agree3 Disagree0

28 Mar 2015 17:05:09
Beast we haven't just stumbled into a system. 433 was the plan all along. It couldn't be implemented at the start as it would have been a mess. The philosophy had to take hold first. We only played 3 at the back to help bed in some of the philosophy.

I think lvg turned up and had a shock at how far behind the rest of Europe the English game and English players are. Its taken most of the season to teach basics to seasoned professionals.

Wait till this time next season. By the way did you see his comments on how he could extend his contract and manage us for 5 years?

As for Kane there's as much chance of him being a one season wonder as there is of him being the new shearer.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Mar 2015 17:30:41
5 years, oh my God I need to break this to the Mrs carefully or it could be carnage in the Beast lair!

Seriously though, if he has us playing with the tempo of the last two games I won't mind, its the other 30 odd games this season and his odd decisions that have me against him.

I rate Kane, he is a different level to Ings, Berahino and Austin imo, who I think all have a bit of Benteke syndrome connected to them.

I would love us to replace RVP & Falcao with Kane.

Agree1 Disagree0

28 Mar 2015 20:00:30
The season is no a write off for me because we could quite possibly finish 2nd and archive out main target of getting champions league football again. If I said at the start of the season we would finish above City, arsenal and Liverpool would you have believed that considering the mess we were in last year, and a new manager? If we don't qualify for CL then it's a write off!

Agree1 Disagree0

28 Mar 2015 23:36:10
Very selective readers here beast I hear you. In terms of youth though I agree with you about the league being too competitive to throw them in as their is massive amounts of money at stake depending on final league placings etc. It would have been too much of a risk for LVG to rely heavily on youth, I get that.

What I will say though is that I look at Liverpool for example and see the likes of Flanagan, Sterling and Ibe get the go ahead to continue if they are in good form despite more experienced players returning to full fitness etc. During our spell of '50 injuries' when if you believe what you read on here we had 50 casualties at the same time, Paddy McNair may have been our best defender yet when others returned he was dropped. A case could also be made for Wilson to get more time due to RVP and Falcao not firing.

Lastly Januzaj has been hugely marginalised this season and I feel the manager is asking too much of him too soon. He is an exciting prospect and I would hate to lose him. I feel LVG should be saying to him 'go out play your natural game but keep your head up' and then tweak his play week to week to make him better. Instead I see a lad on the pitch who's head is full of conundrums, 'should I dribble', 'am I holding the ball too long', 'am I pushing too far forward', 'should I push across or stay wide'. All these types of thoughts are running through Januzaj's head before he even gets on the ball. LVG cannot treat all young players as a Thomas Muller because quite frankly some are not as intelligent.

Agree4 Disagree1

29 Mar 2015 12:36:03
If we had gone with players like mcnair and Wilson for prolonged periods, even with others back fit, and dropped points guess who would be on here moaning, shouting he doesn't know what he's doing.

Cant win with some people.

Next year with more games, no more cup horror shows, and a balanced settled side there should be chances for the young players.

MrE,

It's laughable isn't it, when we played the kids and weren't good enough these two were moaning, now we are playing well without them he's not playing the kids.

It is 100% obvious that beast and JMB would come on here if we won the league and say the manager fluked it and we won it despite him not because of him, and he didn't play enough kids and probably only picked the team because he saw it on here on the team pages. Getting beyond a joke some of the posts to be honest.

Yes GDS that is exactly what we would say. You have just made the most moronic statment I have ever seen. What did I really post that on my previous post that in any way shape or form is slating the manager?

Yes I said I would have liked to see more youth involvement and that Januzaj could do with some personal touches from the coaching staff to improve but my first paragraph clearly states I understand why the manager hasn't used much youth this year.

Again mate very selective in what you read.

Like how the ones you use as an example are Sterling ( just won best young player) and one of their best players, of course he will start, and Flanagan who has hardly played this year but if you have glen Johnson RB you have nothing to lose. What about the other young players at Liverpool not getting a look in, or Chelsea, or City, who have they blooded in this season? No one. Wilson's had minutes, McNair has had minutes as has janazaj and hasn't been up to it. They will get game time in the cups next year but don't u think this season with 4th vital it's not right time to mess about playing 18 year olds??

Hi Eds, thanks for great job on this site.
Need to let off some steam.
Now that the international break is on, I think it is a good time to focus on the critics who have been saying that the team from Man United has been playing sloppy but lucky, not the right manager, etc etc. These critics include those ex-ManUtd players who at one time we hold high regards for.
Given that they have been berating the team and manager, how is it that they do not come out to compliment the team and the manager now? Do they still believe that the team is not going to stay atop 4th spot? What happened to their tongues? I find it appalling that they are quick to join the crowd and criticise and yet not quick to also at least give fair or even compliment where it is due. Funny these so-called pundits (most if not all) are so bias in their comments.
I was looking at Daglish's comments before last week's game and he was like writing off us. One week has passed and he has not come out to say anything about us playing well or at least show he is a gentleman and admit he got it wrong. Gosh these people, I have had it with them.
Anyway, good break for all and hope the Eds take a break too. Great job.

I think it might be in part because we've played pretty poorly over the course of the season and have only reached a level of good football in the past couple weeks. I'm optimistic that we've turned a corner and will push on for. CL spot at least, but we still have to play Arsenal, Chelsea, and City before the season is up.
