I was at work earlier thinking (it doesn't happen often) and it occurred to me that if someone would have said to me 3 years ago, that we would have Mata, RVP, Rooney and Di maria in the same side, I would have probably laughed at them, given the fact that at the time, we were signing the likes of Ashley Young.

It cheered me up no end. :)

Believable8 Unbelievable0

Just to add that I have nothing against Young, who I actually think has been a big plus this season - so far; but he isn't in the same league as the players I mentioned in the above post.

Agree1 Disagree6

If someone told you three years ago we'd have signed Rooney and you wouldn't have believed them maybe you need to work on your trust issues.

Agree4 Disagree6

I wouldn't of put money on Rooney still being at the club three years ago.

I've spent the whole transfer window hoping and believing we will sign Vidal. He would have been the first proper box to box, tough tackling midfielder since Keane. Now it seems its not going to happen and I'm back worrying about our slow, weak midfield. What has been niggling me up to now was Fletcher being made vice captain, which may suggest him being a regular starter. As good as he was, and how pleased I am he's got over his illness, he is far to slow now and not able to cover the ground needed by a top midfielder. I was looking forward with optimism even after the poor start, remembering we beat a pretty full strength Liverpool in Miami, and allowing for our injury troubles, but without a top class centre mid I'm back to believing the top 4 could be out of reach. Still 3 days to go and as the name says, I live in hope.

Believable3 Unbelievable1

29 Aug 2014 22:30:09
Really looks as if Vidal is this seasons Sneijder, never mind he is 27. Just hope we don't lose out on Carvalho who might be able to fill the gap we undoubtedly have in our midfield.

Believable6 Unbelievable0

Blind and Carvalho would be excellent signings for the long term future of the club

From what i'm hearing, Arsenal did enquire about Welbeck, about £13m, and because of Arsenals stance on Vermaelen: Completely dismissed a cash deal, would only accept a swap deal involving Smalling. Because of the grief they got from the RVP deal,

REAP WHAT YOU SOW!

For what its worth, I can't believe LVG & Giggs are even considering letting Welbeck go on loan. He's sooooo under rated!

PS: The only plus points out of the midweek disaster was James Wilson (superstar) and Andreas Pereira's turns. Mouth watering. Wilsons better than Hernandez has ever been. NOW!

RED AND PROUD!

Believable7 Unbelievable1

I'd swap TV for CS every day of the week!

Agree1 Disagree11

Welbeck is nothing more than a mid table premiere league striker and will never be good enough to lead the line at United.

Football is played on 2 feet and he is very poor as a striker when it comes to his balance, add his poor touch and decision making and I am not one bit surprised that we might be looking to offload him. Only the hopeless romantics can go on believing he will come good at sometime in the future.

Running around like a headless chicken is not the sort of quality top teams look for when it comes to strikers. The only reason he looks useful to some here is that he has more pace when compared to the some of our players but so did Bellion and zaha but they are also never going to be good enough for us.

Di Maria signing is the end of him in my opinion and he will be sitting on the bench for prolonged periods of the season.

Let's be honest, the real excitement is not if we will sign Vidal or Carvalho but if we do, what will No Midfield change his name to?

Believable8 Unbelievable0

No centre backs?

Agree2 Disagree0

Whoops. Just seen the post ajh. Only two days left and unfortunately my name doesn't show any signs of being consigned to the proverbial cyber bin.
Vidal and carvalho will achieve that.
Still time, still hope, otherwise I'm wrapping my 9 iron over lvg's head next time I see him!

We may or may not bring in further players but I'm starting toget that real buzz for the next few days.

Di Maria's debut and the mad twist and turns in the transfer window.

Great job eds as always and no doubt you will maintain that over the next few mad days, expect to see all types of posts coming in regarding transfers, debuts and performance. Exciting!

Can't say I'm entirely comfortable with so many posters using the term, 'deadwood', to describe those players that look like they're on their way out.

These are players who pulled on the red shirt, and in my opinion anyway, always tried their best. They may not be of a good enough standard to play for Utd, but was it their fault they were picked or signed? They've all given us a moment of joy at some point, no matter their deficiencies as players.

Which one of us would refuse the opportunity?

As long as they tried their best, then I think they deserve a wee bit more credit than a boot in the ar£e out the door, with, 'deadwood' ringing in their ears from fickle supporters.

It only adds to the growing evidence, after the booing of Fellaini, the airplane stunt last season, and the way over-the-top slating of Cleverley, that Utd fans don't have as much class as I always believed.

Believable12 Unbelievable0

Bang on, unfortunately it's the new keyboard warrior world, but it sits uncomfortably with me too.

Agree4 Disagree0

Stevie, you and I are old enough to be pre Facebook and Twitter. As Dodgy says, it's easy to sit behind a keyboard under a pseudonym throwing out insults. Let's be honest, it's not just football, read any press article on any subject on line and the comments from Joe Public are atrocious.

100% agree these deadwood players brought home the 20th title.

I hope they all go on a do well.

Each player has their own story:
Cleverley - played too deep by moyes
Kagawa - the number 10 we needed but never played in position. Kagawa, RVP Axis could have been amazing.
Chicarito - brilliant super sub and deserves minutes.
Welbeck - played out of position but always gives 100%.

Without getting all Kloot/ Rainfish it amazes me what "fans" say. Back the team back the players.

Agree3 Disagree0

Chris, great photo, I'm a huge fan of the original radio shows. Smelly Alan Fartridge

Agree0 Disagree0

"way over the top slating of Cleverley"?

Look I dislike people getting on the back of players inside the stadium, but the venom for Tom inside the boozers I drink in in manchester is justified! Its not his fault but let's be fair. he's not even close to being good enough. Nowhere near good enough. I cannot believe Villa are offering £8m for him! Take their arm off!

Anderson, Michael Keane (pub player), Kagawa & Hernandez should all follow him out of the door.

In LVG we trust!

I know, guys. Pretty depressing to be honest. Especially when it makes me feel like an aul fart :)

I tore a strip off my wee lad for coming out with something similar the other day.

However, he has an excuse. He's 12 years old.

Agree0 Disagree0

They aren't good enough but you should support all players that play for your club whether there Tom Cleverly or Arturo Vidal encouragment for these players could spark a revival but slagging them off just puts them down more

Agree0 Disagree1

Right sanctimonious rubbish time over!

Top businesses and teams succeed because they make the tough calls. I don't hate cleverly or any of the other 'deadwood' that we have. But trying to sugar coat the fact they simply aren't and weren't good enough is exactly the reason we finished in 7th. Take him for a beer if you feel sorry for him but it doesn't change the fact he isn't good enough.

They brought the 20th title my arse! De gea, vidic, Ezra, Raphael, car rock, Rooney etc the guys who played 20+ genes for us won us the 20th title not those who simply made up the numbers.

I will always support the team that pulls on my beloved united shirt. But that doesn't mean I can't recognise weakness and where we need to improve!

Rant over

Agree3 Disagree2

29 Aug 2014 22:18:22
VPA - maybe Fergie should bear the brunt of that venom then. After all, he brought Cleverley into the team, and kept him there. What was Cleverley supposed to do, when asked to play for Manchester United, by the greatest manager ever? Say, 'no thanks Guv, I'll sit this one out'?

Fair play to the lad. He might be a limited player, but at least he fronted up and didn't hide, especially in the wake of that national lampooning over the England debacle.

That came from fans of other teams, which is fair enough. But I'm sure he probably thought his own team's fans wouldn't join in as well.

Wrong, Tom.

Ted de Bear, you really need to read my post again.

Agree1 Disagree0

StevieK,

Point taken, I do agree that it's wrong that he's taken so much grief from our fans (the best in the world) but I don't think he did him any favours by coming out last year saying " the fans jump on home grown players first". They do to any player who's performance goes from exciting to promising to average to down right awful. his performance Sunderland summed it up. . stunk the place out. worst player on the park AGAIN!. He should have "You do it" on the back of his shirt!. again, its not his fault and if I was given the chance i'd play for us aswell. but i'm rubbish too!

Agree Sir Alex does take some of the blame.

Agree0 Disagree1

29 Aug 2014 23:05:36
VPA,

I thought cleverley was no worse than anyone else in the Sunderland game. Also to call Keane a pub player shows you have hardly seen him play. He's about a year away from being ready but he has been thrown in at the deep end and then people like you call him a pub player. It's pathetic it really is.

Agree1 Disagree1

29 Aug 2014 23:33:03
As a season ticket holder, I have to stand up for the fans here, they didn't turn on moyes as much as maybe they definatly could have given the fall from grace we had, and other clubs even lower league ones doing so much worse than season before would have been calling for the managers head way before we did (if infact the fans in the majority actually did amazingly) last season the majority of fans we're stone cold, solid gold class IMO. The booing of fellaini hurt me tbh because in one game we ruined part of that. In summary for one season without looking like winning trophy's and without looking like finishing top four and without playing exciting football and scoring bags of goals and without signings we stood up, took it on the chin and still had some of the best support in the league, especially away from home.

Agree1 Disagree0

GDS2,

The only player that was on a par wit Tom Cleverley against Sunderland was Darren Fletcher.

I'm a massive Fletcher fan. always have been! But he was dreadful (maybe its catching up with him).

Tom Cleverley has not got the credit in the bank that Fletcher has. I cannot remember the lat time I watched Cleverley have even a half decent game for United. I am a loyal and patient fan, but the player HAS to give something back. something, anything! and he has not. ONCE done that!

Michael Keane makes John O'Shea look like Franco Baresi. He looks like a championship centre half at best!

Tyler Blackett on the other hand looks definately worth a place in the squad.

Class92 - I agree entirely, mate. I got over to a few games last season, and was always impressed with the actual match-going support.

Though some on here denied this was the case, and stated that the more disgruntled fans in the ground were being threatened by other fans into showing support for the manager.

It's the online posters, the keyboard warriors, the spoilt with success plastics and johnny-come-latelys I'm really referring to. And those like Ted the Red, who respond in a rage, without actually reading the OP properly.

Most genuine fans know how to behave.

Red Pill huh, getting worried about you now mate lol

Agree0 Disagree0

StevieK

Several of the match goers were threatened last year. I actually spoke to another at the Swansea game who was abused on the coach on his way home for not being "onside".

I think our fans are really good but could be more vocal, I was there against Real Madrid and stood like most others to give the Brazilian Ronaldo an ovation, that is class. In fact I think it happened back in the early seventies when Charlie George played for Derby at OT, I was there and applauded a wonderful performance.

I agree genuine fans know how to behave

Agree0 Disagree0

Is that you Neo?

Agree0 Disagree0

Stevie.

I did read your post.

The reply was partly in reaction to your post but also to those reply's.

You say they deserve credit, I don't think they do! That's my opinion you have yours. Of course it's not their 'fault' they were picked and like anyone else I would have paid to be able to pull on the shirt.

But that doesn't change the fact that we need higher expectations of our players.

I don't remember their being a response like this when we shipped Gibson of to Everton as he wasn't good enough.

The fact is whilst I support whatever team goes out and plays there are certain players who I hope play well rather than expect to play well. People like cleverley and nani.

It's about setting expectation and being realistic about the quality of our players. Call a spade a spade! Just because they pull on the shirt doesn't mean they are good enough! I will support them wholeheartedly when they do, but it doesn't mean I can't recognise that they shouldn't.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Aug 2014 10:49:36
Ted, when I said read my post properly, I was referring to the fact that I did state these various players weren't at the level required to be Utd players. There's no argument there. My point was, that as Utd players, they deserve a bit better than being constantly referred to as deadwood, just because they had the temerity to agree to play for our club when asked.

I remember the likes of Gary Birtles and Peter Davenport having a torrid time back in the 80s. Two new signings with big reputations, but who it just didn't work out for. But it wasn't through want of the Utd supporters not giving them good backing. We willed them to try and reproduce their form at their previous clubs. We didn't boo them or publicly vilify them. Same as Forlan. Why? Because they tried their best. Even though they couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo, the fans knew they were giving their all.

It's when they're blatantly not putting in the effort, that they deserve any criticism coming their way.

Guys, I have to share this with you, I have found the ultimate deluded scouser. This guy and his comment makes Brendan Rodgers look sane. On comparing Di Maria and Lallana, he said; "You do realise Lallana played the whole season out of position too? Di Maria is arguably not even as good, let alone twice the player. He just has a fancy name which tends to excite modern fans for some reason. Di Maria will most definitely not get more goals and assists. I reckon 5 goals and 8 assists for Di Maria and 10 goals and 10 assists for Lallana". Unbelievable.

Believable7 Unbelievable0

Just to add to the delusion, this same guy has just said that Di Maria is worth £20 million tops!

Agree1 Disagree0

30 Aug 2014 00:59:34
There is a £34m difference in the prices of these two players for a reason, Di Maria is proven world class. At times was the catalyst for real Madrid, 3rd most assists in the La Liga in his 4 years there, Lallana is a league standard player and at the same age as Di Maria (both 26) lallana will not get much better, whereas Di Maria at his peak will he a world beater, IMO.

Agree0 Disagree0

29 Aug 2014 20:04:10
Sick of seeing people saying that lvg is the same as moyes. For a start lvg is actually a proven manager who has won trophies with big clubs and has previous champions league experience. Secondly lvg has at least tried to bring in his philosophy and bring in new players to improve our ranks. Moyes bought fellaini for more than he should have cost and although when he was at Everton I craved for him to join he looks a shadow of his old self. So not a good signing. We've signed 4 good players and maybe there could be more to come. He's seen the deadweight and is shipping them out. It will take a while to adapt to his way of playing but when everything comes together and we have everyone fit we will look like a different side. Stop panicking. We're 3 games in not 3 games to the end

Believable3 Unbelievable1

29 Aug 2014 18:43:35
Anyone else get the feeling and concerned that our buying might be over? We have lost 5 first class senior players. Brought in some good players 3 of which are injured or can't play due to work permit. We are looking at seeking up to 5 more players and nani has already gone. Surely there must be two or three more coming in unless he's promoting a few youth players. Thoughts?

Believable1 Unbelievable1

29 Aug 2014 17:59:38
A question to the eds. It looks like Cleverley and Kagawa are off and could be followed by Anderson as well leaving us very thin in the midfield. Do you see us making that key signing for CM now or will we use Di Maria as a temporary CM and go in for Strootman in January?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - The club is looking to bring players in.}

29 Aug 2014 17:37:15
Ed, banter please if you would be so kind.

Some of us are getting over excited and we have the pro LVG and the less pro LVG camps forming. I've no idea if he remains a tactical genius or is now a doddery old fool but I am really lying forward to this season and the roller coaster ride we will alone on. However, there have been some strange things happening already.

1. We sign a left back for a record fee and then decide he is unfit, over train him, and lose him for a period.

2. We sign a new CB who we seem unable to get a work permit for. This may get resolved but still seems clunky to me.

3. We tell a bunch of players they can leave, then play some of them in the League Cup and wonder why they didn't perform.

4. We then finally make a real statement and sign a real star, albeit for silly money.

5. LVG is a character and clearly doesn't lack confidence but is it just me who would like to hear a little less from him just now?

6. Phil Osophy has yet to be seen, let's hope he turns up soon.

7. If we lose TC and Welbs, we should promote home grown to keep the numbers where they need to be.

I think this season will be wild but I'm taking the long view. If you remember when SAF arrived and started signing new players, it took a few attempts before he got to a winning formula. We are in a better place now so it shouldn't take so long but it will still be rocky.

My biggest hope is we start to inject pace and dynamism and stir some passions, the football in the last year or 2 has been a little less than exciting.

Believable10 Unbelievable3

Great post AJH. As a lot of people have said we need to wait and see and hope the plan is a good one.

I have been a bit too quick off the mark with some of my comments potentially, but I suppose there are two parts, my pint is half empty with this guy though. I just hope if we are backing the master plan that we give him enough time to do it, otherwise we will be royally screwed. Patience whilst you lose bucket loads of cash are hard things to co-exist.

Agree1 Disagree0

Cant blame LVG for shaw injury as it was shaw that did extra training beyond what LVG asked him to.
Nearly every utd player want a star signing and they sign di maria and everyone starts shouting why did we pay so much!?

League cup was and opportunity for frindge players to show why they deserve to be at the club and they didn't show show up. After the game they prob git told there time at club was over.

Yes we have not had best of starts but have faith. Moyes came to the club and tried to play the same way utd have always played and fail with they players. LVG has come in and changed a lot and will require time. He is going to change our fortunes and it will take time.

To many fans at this club expect instant sucess and to a point that is what should happen given our history. But we are going through change and that's a good thing shows we are developing and wil get back to the ways of old and win cups.

This isn't a dig at you AJH just wanted a put my view across

Just imagine if LVG had replaced SAF last season instead of Moyes.

Now imagine that LVG had a similar season to Moyes's, which is pretty much the way it's looking like being as it will take a fair few months for everything to click (if it does) and by then it will be fortunate if we are competing for top 4. Not being negative just realistic.

Now imagine the board no longer believe in the LVG plan, because it's unrealistic for a team like Man Utd to wait that long and they get rid. Just like they did Moyes.

Now imagine we hire Moyes to replace LVG this summer and everything we have witnessed this summer has happened with Moyes, all the mixed messages, the player judging (again), the dropped points, the loss against MK Dons, the last minute transfer mess, the massively overpaying for players, most importantly the inept bewildered performances that are so anti Utd its unbelievable, etc etc etc.

Moyes would be lynched, but LVG is viewed as a saviour by many. Funny how that works and what one season can do!

Read The Moon's blog about LVG - it may be cause for concern to those of you that think LVG is the saviour or can help reinforce your views, depends on how you interpret it, but it's a good read.

It reinforces my view that LVG is a spoilt brat, he gets his way or he quits, if he gets his way and it fails then he blames everyone else, and quits. I think we have all boarded the Titanic here and as soon as that Ice Berg pops up our Captain will be on the one and only life boat out of there, there is something Billy Zane (or Charles Rane in Passenger 57)about this guy!

I'm worried.

What should we do fire him too?
what the hell is wrong with our fans?
last year half of the crowd was after moyes from the moment he was appointed.
this iyear the half that hated moyes backing lvg.
and the rest either being dreamy or being in denial.
The truth is ever since the 08 champions league we have been going downwards. we have been winning but being rubbishty predictable and very very bad. but the genius and the fear of Sir Alex kept the half of teams from beating us.
We are not a top 4 team yet. building team takes time. I was prepared to give moyes time. atleast to remove the deadwood. but he didnt. was punished. lvg has atleast tried to do that. it takes time.
i don't get the point some people make that we know people that players are rubbish. so you walk into a nrewly appointed job go there and tell every one around you. that . hey I have been here a day. but I know your rubbish? that's not how it works is it? Beast,
I think LVG has a good track record allbeit a CV not without flaws. He is well respected within the game and he has coached at many of the biggest clubs in european football and won trophies everywhere he has been then had a great 2 years with Holland culminating in a wc semi final, he exudes confidence and will be a success, he is not everybodies cup of tea and he will upset players, the board, the press and the fans at times, but he is a great coach and those who catch on and do it his way will improve as will the team as a whole, once he has the players where he wants them and gets them to understand and implement his philosaphy we will see something great. Once he has the group clicking and fully in tune with each other you will see a team fully motivated brimming with confidence and 100% together, . I don't believe the club are in any sort of panic mode, just try to be patient. ;)

Imagine LVG took over last season instead of Moyes .
Imagine he wouldn't have spent over 60m on Fellaini ( not good enough ) and Mata ( another no. 10 to add to the others )
Imagine he'd kept the pressure on Woodward to get players in
Imagine he'd cleared out all the deadwood
Imagine we might be ready to go again this season instead of him having an even bigger mess to sort

Agree1 Disagree1

Beast, what is your problem with LVG? Yes, he is an arrogant so and so, but so was SAF, so is Mourinho. The difference between LVG and your best mate Moyes, is the fact that LVG has had success wherever he's been. Period.
We can only employ a man who has a good track record in successful management. At Bayern, he took over, changed the club, won two leagues an got them to the final of the CL, before a lot of interference from the heirachy over there. I spoke to him briefly about this, and he was very bitter about the way he was treated.
Moyes did nothing in ten months to give anyone any encouragement that he might be the right man for the job. He was abysmal in everything he did.
So please, let's give the manager ten months before we start calling for his head.
He has already started clearing the deadwood in the club, which is 100% more than Moyes achieved.

Beast mate you need to calm down a bit, From all your post one thing I m certain about is that u don't like LVG and for some reason seem to love Moyes, we get it.

But let's just make a list of players injured or unavailable currently,
rafael, shaw, carrick, herrera, smalling, rojo and I m not considering squad players here just definite starters. That's six starters unavailable, select which ever team in the world u wan't remove any six of their 1st team players see let's see how they perform.

U keep banging abt how people view LVG as savior while moyes would be crucified for this, it's simple LVG has Bundesliga title, a europa, a Liga BBVA title and 3rd place finish at world cup with a average dutch squad to show for as a CV, while moyes had I finished midtable with everton for 10 seasons. U think fans would have reacted same way had r manager been Guardiola r Klopp r Mou , I don't agree with the fact that moyes was sacked yet dear ed still retains his job, But in the end results matter, Fergie could have been sacked but for a FA cup.

U see Moyes n LVG r 2 different people, I don't thnk LVG will take kindly to ed deadwood if he does not get d players LVG wants while Moyes just took it lying down, U thnk if RVP and other seniors would have survived in d team if they had sulked the same way with LVG incharge as dey did when moyes was incharge.

U say LVG has a his way or high way approach , I ask a simple question why shouldn't he its on his head the axe will swing if he does not get it right.

I get the feeling that there aren't many on here that remember united pre Fergie. I'm not saying that I have much memories of that time myself, I'm only 32, but I think people need to realise we've all been spoilt rotten for the last 20 odd years. Teams don't normally win everything every year. Fergie was a genius and united's dominance was a freak of nature. Calm down and let Van Gaal do his job, he might be quite good at it.

I have a feeling these posts are going to look a little silly come the end of October.

Agree2 Disagree0

Beast - I agree entirely on the Moyes comparisons. For whatever reason fans seem a lot more forgiving when it comes to LVG than they did with Moyes - although I suspect that's down to their belief that LVG will eventually come good.

Personally I never felt that Moyes was the right man for the job and for that reason found it extremely difficult to support him when things started to go wrong (ultimately because there was no sign of things getting better or a long term plan other than 'hope for the best').

I've been critical of LVG because I think he's made some mistakes already - but ultimately I think he has the experience and skills to bring us back from the brink. He might fail - but I am a lot more confident with LVG at the helm than I was with Moyes.

He needs to start repaying that confidence with results though - because as far as I'm concerned missing out on Champions League football again is not an option. I suspect the board will have a similar view. We're still only two games into the season. If we're still performing as we are after 19, I imagine peoples' opinions will change - regardless of how much they talk about giving him time now.

AJH, no offence taken my friend, I saw the disaster before he was appointed and I did actually say this time last year that I would give him time to see what he would do and it is easily forgotten I tried to be objective until it became clear he was out of his depth.

I think a lot of those giving LvG a hard time perhaps are not realising that we are looking at a decisive leader, a leader, a manager who has a vision of what the finished successful article looks like and knows how to get there because he has done it before.

LvG is actually doing what should have been done a year ago. Come in, assess where we are, plot a path and start dealing with the issues we have been talking about on here for about 4 years.
I have seen every manager since Sir Matt and after Sir Matt we dithered in the transfer market pretending the youth would rescue us. I recall one of the early 70's managers asked for major funds to buy some top players and it was declined, I remember the pain all the way to 74 because of it, Georgie Best questioned our ambition but we bumbled around.

We bumbled last season but now we have someone who is being decisive and setting about the arresting of a potential decline, the things United in 69 and Liverpool in 90 didn't do.

I am prepared to give LvG time, because I know the desperation of the pre SAF era and I see a leader in place.

Blimey Gav, far queen bellhop?

I'm behind LVG but I guess if we rewind 12 months, when people started doubting Moyes, the optimists amongst us would never have believed we would finish 7th and be embarrassed so regularly at OT. Time will tell I guess although the key for me is we have a man confident in his own ability and beliefs, with a clear vision and strategy, and one who players will not disrespect. If anyone decides to take it easy they will be out. As SAF used to say, they have to know who is in charge.

Ed002, Any reason you think of as to why three journalists tweeted (I know) the same thing mentioning no interest in either Vidal or Carvalho from United as per their clubs sources?

Is United briefing the press again?
Curious as to what you think.

Read a journo tweeting earlier that his information is that neither vidal or carvalho are coming. Now with Vidals latest '100% Juventus' comments that fairly rules him out no big prize for saying he is not coming.

Calling Carvalho not coming means either he is talking out of his ass or he knows from inside Carvalho isn't coming. He did not say nobody is coming for defensive mid just it won't be either of these pair.

The whole scenario begs the question are we going to sign anybody as a defensive midfielder. I would not be surprised if LVG was waiting till Jan window to allow Strootman show his fitness before signing him.

THere seems to be a big midfield clear out going on with Nani gone and Cleverly and Kagawa looking like following him out of Old Trafford. Anderson is still hanging in there hope he goes before the window shuts. THe problem is there is very little left to plug the gap.

Not signing a def cm puts more pressure on our creaking back 3 which needs more than Rojo to fix it. In the absence of a Vidal type player surely a top centre back is need to give some stability in the defence. I do think that LVG thinks the 3 offers more protection in the absence of a Def cm and were we to sign one he will revert to 433

The squad has been in decline for years and both Fergie and Moyes failed to address that. Even Fergie had to bring back Scholes to patch up the midfield to win the title. Big names have left in Rio and Vidic at the back both top class players and no replacements. Evans although he had a stinker v MK Dons was ever present in the last title winning side alongside either RIo or Vidic. It was a case of Evans and one of them rather than the other way around. He needs to step up and quickly. THat said a no nonsense centre half is required, Jones for all his bluster comes across as headless at times and Smalling is more of a positional centre back.

The next couple of days will tell where we go until january at least. As Ed said let's watch the space

This truly is an exciting time with United because at last some of the dead wood that has played in the 1st team looks like it's finally being booted out. Yes we've not had the greatest start to the season but after Tuesday's defeat, that could prove to have been the turning point. At least under LVG he seems to have a clear plan for a way forward now, unlike Moyes who was probably like a kid in a toy shop & not knowing what to buy or what to do with it if he did.
We may have a few more set backs along the way but I firmly believe we will turn the corner. I feel it's next season that it will really take hold but at least you can see positive movement. Ferguson was great at getting the best out of players (especially the ones mooted to be on their way out) but when he retired, that fear factor that he created vanished & these players clearly felt like they didn't have to try.

They've been found out & now a new set of players will make a name for themselves. We've some great players still at the club (De Gea, Rooney, RVP, Mata & Januzaj) & along with Jones, Wilson & Blackett plus the new signings we can build on the structure that Van Gaal is implementing. Last season I could see no way out but this one I can see that things will get better.

Believable3 Unbelievable1

Moyes was hardly a kid in a toy shop.

He brought in Fellaini last minute who was Evertons best player for several years (the team that finished higher than us last season) and who Moyes knew well. Herrera and Shaw were both Moyes signings as far as I'm concerned.

Mata was a waste, but we were desperate and the majority of fans loved Mata until recently. Hardly a guy that went crazy with the money, I understood Fellaini as a ball winner, but he hasn't turned out that great, still I understand why Moyes wanted to sign somebody he knew well.

LVG's clear plan? Moyes had a clear plan, every manager has a clear plan, we haven't seen anything but utter dross so far. However he has mitigated that by saying it will take a while for us to get his system.

Wonder how Moyes would have been treated had he said it will take 12 months for us to compete for the league? Certainly wouldn't be praise for his objectiveness.

We are out of one cup we had a realistic chance of winning (no need to rotate the team when we don't have fixture congestion and he should have already known which players aren't good enough), and in a poor state considering the fixtures we were given league wise. I'm not excited, very concerned.

Agree3 Disagree6

Beast

I would love to hear what your thoughts about moyes were about 6 months ago. If you could please remember them for me

Agree3 Disagree0

The fact Moyes knew Fellaini well and still paid nearly 30m for him is the only reason you need to see that the guy was clueless.
What does he posses that would make anyone spend that much money on him? He is a big lump whom you just pump long balls (which is exactly how Everton used him) up to.

Agree1 Disagree2

Beast, your comments are laughable. So Moyes knew Fellaini well, he knew he can't run, can't tackle, is totally inflexible, has no football brain, but could jump higher than most as he's tall and head balls to the striker.
Then Moyes went and bought him for nearly £28m.
Are you in this world? Before he was injured (again), we made it clear Fellaini was for sale and we received hardly any interest from any of the top clubs for his services. Does that not say anything to you?
Have you forgotten the clueless way Moyes conducted his press conferences, his inept substitutions?
LVG has not had the best start and that's putting it mildly, but let's give the guy a chance. It is pathetic to be calling for his head after three matches.

Agree1 Disagree2

29 Aug 2014 18:57:38
Don't want to repeat myself, NM, but Fellaini had Arsenal and Chelsea sniffing round him at various times before we signed him, and he was considered by his international manager, as a central part of a strong Belgium team. But you're probably a better judge of a good player.

And is it too much to expect people like yourself to give him a chance, in the same way you call for LVG to be given a chance? He had a stuttering season last year due to injuries, and no pre-season with us. Do you just pick and choose randomly, who deserves a chance and who doesn't.

As regards ineptness, we were only 1-0 down at half-time to the mighty MK Dons, before LVG made one of his much-vaunted tactical changes. We ended up losing 4-0.

Your hypocrisy is almost as staggering as that of your master.

And you might want to avoid lecturing me on being abusive in my posts, after your last one: 'your comments are laughable', 'Are you in this world?' Not very mature and constructive, but quite hypocritical again.

Overheard a couple of people complaining today that all has gone quiet on the transfer front regarding United.

United have nearly always tried to conduct their negotiations without a media circus. The only reason everyone knew about the Di Maria deal weeks ago was because Madrid leaked it to the Spanish media in order to drive his price up.

I would be very surprised if at least 2 more weren't brought in before Monday. Having said that I'm fairly sure Vidal will not be one of those players, which is a shame. The only one I would put money on would be Daley Blind.

Allegeri said that vidal is fit and is going to start tomorrow. Why would any team start their star player who's come back from an injury and a knee surgery? Did he play even one preseason match or even a reserves match? This may be a case of trying to prove his fitness.

This is for Eds and everyone else. As it seems attention has turned to william carvalho as you may have suggested. What is yours and everyones views on this player? I have never seen him play and nobody tell me based on youtube videos please!

Believable1 Unbelievable1

I haven't seen him play enough to make my own judgment but I've read several articles about him. Apparently not the quickest but he makes up for that as he reads the game so well. He's strong and is always willing to collect the ball from defenders and start a new attacking move. He could be a good signing and would allow the likes of Hererra and Mata more freedom further up the pitch. Also very young and will only get better with experience in a top league like the premiere league. Anything less than £25-£30M could be very good business.

Agree1 Disagree0

I have only seen him 5 or 6 times but what I've seen and read about him. He's a physical presence that we desperately need in midfield he breaks down the play and plays from deep. He however doesn't do a great deal going forward other than recycling the ball. At his age I'd say he has potential to be not world class but certainly a very high standard and he's already better than what we currently have. I'd be content if we signed him but that's only because we would have failed to sign vidal.

Agree0 Disagree0

29 Aug 2014 14:33:13
I'm not a United fan but have looked at him and read various reports as he has also been linked to Arsenal.

It seems initial reports earlier last year raved about him, much like they did Wanyama.

However later reports I read stated he has struggled against the better sides.

Like a lot of young players they get hyped up but are not necessarily the player you were hoping for.

We all know the Premier League is a different ball game but who knows, Wanyama seems to be doing well at Southampton and I posted some stats on him on our page where Southampton did way better when he was playing to when he wasn't.

LVG goes on about his philosophy. How would you all define "philosophy" as opposed to "tactics", "strategy" or "system"?

Believable0 Unbelievable1

Well I wouldn't use any of the above. Its an attitude which stems from a way of thinking. Your 'tactics' strategy' 'system' are created from this.

You would benefit from a dictionary. Philosophy - a theory or attitude that acts as a guiding principle for behaviour.

Agree1 Disagree0

Personally I think he's full of sh!t whenever he warbles on about 'philosophy'. It's both a crutch and a badge of merit.

He's better than other managers because of his 'philosophy' but at the same time adapting to his 'philosophy' will be difficult for players and so we can expect a rocky opening three months.

I wish he'd just do his talking on the pitch.

Agree5 Disagree0

I agree Redseven - Mourinho "Special One" syndrome.

If his philosophy is so good how come it takes so long for exceptional players to adapt and understand it? Also why in the past 20 years has nobody else adopted the same "Philosophy"?

Why does he leave clubs so soon after they apparently grasp his philosophy? Funnily enough when the club start playing bad again they are no longer following the philosophy, so they kind of forget it when they fail but have it when they succeed.

It's just a big joke. Yeah you want players to keep the ball, pass and move, hassle opponents, fill in space without the ball and cover your own players backs. Sounds like the philosophy of every team, all LVG does is mess about with the formation, the rest is same same but no different to anyone else.

Agree2 Disagree0

Melbourne, I know what it is without looking it up in a dictionary. The question implicitly relates to Van Gaal's repeated statements about his philosophy as opposed to his tactics.

Obviously redseven and the Beast think it's a load of tosh

Agree0 Disagree0

Peashooter -

I don't think it's a load of tosh. I imagine by his 'philosophy' he's referring to how he thinks a football club should be run.

My issue is, however, that every manager has their own ideas as to how they should run a club. I do not see why he feels the need to keep banging on about it (aside from the reasons I mentioned in my first reply) nor do I see much to suggest that his 'philosophy' is any better than any other manager.

LVG has achieved success in the past - but he also has his fair share of failures. Winning with a team of great players doesn't necessarily make somebody a great manager. Getting fired from a club with a team of great payers certainly doesn't.

I'm also a little concerned about his ignorance of the Manchester United 'philosophy'. We play quick attractive football with wingers - he plays boring football with wing-backs. We promote youth - he leads a team of youth players to our biggest ever defeat to lower league opposition and signs £140m worth of players in his first 2 months. We have a winning mentality right up to the last minute of every game - he sells excuses about it taking three months for us to start playing.

Personally I think he could be a great manager for us; but he will do it on the pitch - not by banging on about his philosophy.

Agree0 Disagree0

I cannot disagree with that, redseven, but he does have to work from what he inherited:

- no top class wingers
- young inexperienced injury prone defenders
- slow in mind and movement uncreative midfielders.
- low on confidence
- duplication in key areas adding to demoralization.

Ad then there is the constant media frenzy about our demise and demanding he explain this and that, which seems to be obligatory nowadays. We need a few wins under our belt to ease the pressure.

I wish he'd could shut up too, but I'm not sure he has the option.

His task is to reinvigorate the club top to bottom. It's a big one. Let's hope he can do that in under 3 years.

Im getting sick of the Vidal rumours but here's another that has just appreared on the live transfer section on the Sky Sports Website.

"Corrierre dello Sport claims the Manchester United striker has agreed personal terms with Juventus. United are reported to be using the deal as a bargaining tool to sign Arturo Vidal"

Believable1 Unbelievable1

I'd rather keep Chico than sell him to Juve.

Agree1 Disagree1

Thats upto Chico really, if he isn't getting a game then I would think he would want to leave.

Agree0 Disagree1

Chico is a waste of space for me. I'd much rather he moved on and Wilson promoted up a peg, he is a dead weight for us now. As much as I loved the rags to riches story of the little Pea, he just isn't good enough, one season wonder I'm afraid.

Agree0 Disagree1

I agree Beast, his touch and passing is shocking. He's just a goal poacher nothing more.

Agree0 Disagree1

Given game time Chico is a decent player and a real goal poacher. In an ideal world we'd be in a position to be able to bring him on for 30 minutes of every game once the game is won to recapture his form and confidence.

Unfortunately I don't think our current form or his allows us to do that. I don't see us being in a position where a game is won after 60 minutes anytime soon and I don't think he is playing well enough to come on and win us a game if we're struggling. He needs to leave - but I wouldn't let him go to Juventus after the fiasco surrounding Vidal.

There will be other clubs in for him and if it's a case of staying with us or going to somebody other than Juventus I am confident he will opt for the latter.

Not long to go, many players on the way out and many names being mentioned of who we are in talks or looking at.All assumptions but nothing concrete, some say its, others its off, so we just don't know.
If we are to see a new team by Monday, Ed the ned really has his work cut out over the weekend him right as it should have been done much sooner. All I can see is another panic transfer window and with Ed the ned it doesn't fill me with much hope.I do believe we will get better and LVG needs time and has the experience to do it, unlike Moyes who played a whole season changing things and resulting in no return and at least LVG is taking the action that is needed and getting rid of deadwood that have been sitting on their laurals getting chanace after chance to prove themselves and blown it.There isn't much players left to buy of quality left as most have already signed elsewhere, thanks Ed woodward.Hope the holidays were good.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

You realise that in the 13 months Woodward has been at the club - our net spend on transfers is only £26m less than our net spend in the entirety of the 20 years that preceded that period, right? (approx £216m vs £190m)

If Moyes told Woodward to go out and sign Bale and Fabregas last summer - how exactly is that his fault if the players don't want to come? He's clearly willing to spend money - but if the players the manager is asking for don't want the move there isn't much he can do.

The same goes for this summer. It looks as though LVG asked him to go out and sign Shaw, Herrera, Kroos, Vidal, Vermaelen, Di Maria and Hummels. Kroos and Vermaelen preferred Real and Barcelona, Dortmund are asking for silly money for Hummels and Vidal is injured.

Shaw and Herrera came in early and Di Maria (arguably the best of the bunch) was signed for a British transfer record. When it became clear that we couldn't sign Vermaelen and switched our attention to Rojo the deal was done within a week. I think people need to cut the guy some slack.

Agree2 Disagree0

If LVG hadn't doddered about thinking deals can be done like they were 20 years ago we wouldn't be in this panic position. He took too long analysing the different types of averageness in our squad and then expected miracles to be done in the market.

The same players he wants rid of now, we could have pretty much told him this before he took his first training session. Shows how much effect Giggs has - 6 weeks wasted and 1 point to show, plus a tricky game tomorrow!

Agree1 Disagree1

Beast - I have to agree on that point. Players like Young, Ando, Nani, Clevs, Chico and Fellaini are clearly not Manchester United players. Evra is getting on and Kagawa is a decent CAM but is not better than Mata.

He could and should have been able to learn all this a lot quicker and if not should have delegated the responsibility to somebody who had worked with the team in the past. If only he had an assistant manager who had played with all of those players in the past who he could have asked?

It irks me a little that he came out today and said that he'd given everybody a fair chance - pointing out that those who didn't play in America were given a fair chance against MK Dons. It's no wonder we played so poorly when a lot of the players on the pitch basically had one game to play for their future. There's pressure - and there's that.

Agree0 Disagree0

29 Aug 2014 11:51:25
Can anyone help with the Rojo work permit issue?
LVG said the difference between him and Di Maria, is that Di Maria has an Italian passport?
Rojo has an Argentinian passport and has to "work for it"?

Surely we would have looked into this prior to signing the lad.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

There's talk that not only is the Rojo deal being held up by work permit issues (attributed to ongoing legal troubles in Argentina) - but also that the Premier League are still to ratify the deal because of third party ownership issues. Apparently Sporting are refusing to give Doyen 75% of the transfer fee despite Doyen having lent them 75% of the funds to sign the player from Russia.

If reports are true LvG has made one of his best decisions so far by promoting wilson to the 1st team squad

So far we have signed:

Rojo - Shaw - Herrera - Di Maria.

Looking at Carvalho, Vidal, Blind, Hummels, Cuadrado and probably some unknowns.

For the youth we have signed:

Mensah - Borg - Milinkovic.

Looking at Odegaard, Oxford and probably some unknowns.

It's a massive three days, still need at least a midfielder and a defender. Exciting!

Believable0 Unbelievable2

Is Mensah confirmed Syd I had never heard of him before is he of good potential or already on his way to 1st team standard?

Agree0 Disagree1

Have we signed borg syd? I know we had him late july and took him to the milk cup but I've googled him and there's nothing about utd signing him.

It maybe the cynic in me, but are MU using Valencia to push up prices for our players? Or are they genuinely interested in signing all of our players :)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Either way works for me

Agree0 Disagree0

Valencia have got a new Billionaire owner, so have become one of the teams to dangle unwanted players in front of.

Whether LVG succeeds from here is another thing. What he has managed to do so far is something that should have been done 2-3 years ago; clear the deadwood.
Well here is one thing you can already see very different from moyes - a plan.Whether its successful or not remains to be seen, but at least there is one.

If reports are to be believed and juve only want to loan chicarito and it is not part of a deal for vidal I think we should pull the plug as its no benefit to us to loan him out he is not a youngster looking for games he is a player that unfortunately hasn't played to the required standard and needs to be sold

Sly sports reporting that Valencia are interested in cleverley aswell. And for the life of me I don't understand why. The guy wouldn't get in my local pub team.

Interesting comments from Edwin Van Der Sar this morning that 'Daley Blind will not be joining Man Utd this summer'.
Could be a bluff of course but with Vidal not coming (he never was anyway) the comments made by LVG that he will have a new United on Monday with a new group of players make interesting reading.
Just who will these players be. This could be one of the great transfer windows.
Come on United.

Dont be surprised to see schweinsteiger here soon

I agree with other posters here. Enough with the Vidal obsession. It won't end sweet if he happens to be another injury-prone addition to our already injury-prone squad. Besides, there can never be only one solution to such a problem. Start with Carvalho, for instance. Its only intelligent thinking from the United decision-makers to raise interest in him once again.
He has very good positioning sense somewhat similar to Carrick. He may not be the most skillful or fast, but its not mandatory if he can boss the middle of the park with his position, interception and power in front of the back line. He is certainly better that what we have. He would replace Carrick comfortably. That's what I think.

Believable8 Unbelievable0

I think if we let Carvalho slip through our fingers and he goes to Arsenal we will regret it for years.

Agree7 Disagree0

I can see carrick being used as the cb in the 3 at the back. Similar to what de Rossi used to do for italy a few years back. An extra cb but come out and play the ball around. It would make sense as we need a more experienced player back there who can organise.

Agree1 Disagree3

Rouge Diablo, I agree 100%. Carvalho would be a great addition. Not easy to find a player with such potential in that position.

Im sure could mate :)

Just read an article saying we could get Vidal on a pay as you play deal because of concerns over his knee, if true I would rather give him a wide berth.
We really don't want another Hargreaves situation.

Believable4 Unbelievable2

Ive read an article on vidal every day for the last 6 weeks, guess what, so far none of it has been true.

Stretfordender
His knee problem has been talked about most of the summer so that seems to be true.

New comprehensive article about Louis Van Gaal was submitted by The Moon

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Good article.
I quite agree with moving forward and the support needed to be given to LVG. It is evident that the belief must come from the players. There must be conviction and confidence that THEY ARE MAN UTD and a big club with depth in history. If these players do not believe and play what LVG wants, I can only say that the players are to be blame if they don't even give it their best and at the least try the LVG style.
If they tried and fail, I am sure everyone can then see that it is not the right system and hence LVG should then take the blame. Until then, the onus is on the players to give it their best in training and game time. After all, they are paid so highly to give their best. If they don't then they are obviously not professional and waste of time and Man Utd's money and resources.

Agree0 Disagree0

Red666 - Van Gaal will never be the fault in this according to him. all we could do is speculate.

But I think EVERYONE on here needs to realize (which through my article I've tried showing) that Van Gaal projects ALWAYS take half the season to start working, we're not some anomaly.

It's a fact at all but 2 of the clubs he's been at they've struggled to get off the mark initially due to the nature and technicality of his training regimes.

3 months to learn a whole new system to a level that will have you competing with the very best teams in Europe. That's a huge ask.

I don't think people understand the complexity of tactics.

I believe the board are well aware of this, I think they all knew the LVG plan and the fact that this season may be just as hard on the fans as last season.

Anyway, thanks for reading the article. much appreciated.

I worked hard on putting it all together, so if anyone else gets a couple of minutes have a read. I'm sure you'll learn something new about LVG's career.

Have a good day.

Ed002 you have said that Wednesday and Thursday were the days that transfers were going to be discussed by the big clubs so I was wondering if you have an update on united's transfer targets and any progress that has been made? Cheers

{Ed002's Note - I have given it to you man. Carvalho.}

Lets not forget Carvalho's agent is Mendes. Gill's and SAF's best buddy. No doubt SAF and Gill were in Monaco yesterday with Mendes.

Ed,
Cleverley, zaha leave and kagawa, welbeck and anderson expected to leave also as already club interested. It is means that man utd need another one or two player will needed as their replacement for this transfer window? carvalho and blind?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - The club are interested in both - it remains tough to see what Blind will bring.}

29 Aug 2014 08:37:51
Carvalho yes as he would add some much needed steel to our very soft midfield. Blind I just don't think is needed. We need a CB not someone who can cover a few positions. The left side of defence looks great for me now. If we get Carvalho I'll be happy with our CM for this season too, so a new CB and I am happy. If we lose Hernandez and Welbeck then a forward would be needed, unless LVG thinks Wilson could do the job straight away.

VIDAL WANTS TO COME TO UNITED - This is not a rumour as such but something that I hear Van Gaal say in his press confrence with Di Maria on the 28/8/14 "We know already in advance what players we want and sometimes you can have them but sometimes no. It is also dependable of the club, more or less the club than the players because the players wants to come ALL."

So Van Gaal wants Vidal "Yeah [I like Di Maria]. But I like Messi also and Vidal also. There are a lot of players who I like. But they cannot always come to Manchester United."

So when you look at these quotes together it is clear Vidal wants to come. The only reason he may not is because of the club i.e. Juventus.

Believable6 Unbelievable9

Talk about hearing what you want to hear. lol

Have to say i'm delighted lvg has decided to start clearing out some of the players. Shows he has balls and that he knows what players are good enough. It may be a bit late in terms of the window but its a start. I am hearing zaha is on loan with kagawa, hernandez and clevs likely to agree deals elsewhere. If we can also move anderson on and young it would be a hugely successful window. I do not see any point letting welbeck and hernandez both go especially with rvp injury record so I hope danny stays as I think he has something to offer. Now with departures it must mean arrivals. I really hope we see vidal or carvalho perhaps daley blind and a central defender and I would even be happy with ron vlaar who knows the premier league and lvg and trusts him. He was super in world cup and is a rock of a man. He is able to lead a defence also and would not cost a fortune. I know a lot of people want hummels but its unlikely and vlaar would be better than most of our defenders. Really think lvg is starting to make his mark. Have said all along when he has his own players and gets rid of wasters we will get a lot better. The man knows what he is doing he is one of the best in the business.

As a kid I was obsessed with action figures. Not so much with having them but the possible acquisition of them. Twice a year, once in winter and in the summer when it was my birthday, I would spend weeks staring at pictures of them in catalogues, reading about them and what they could supposedly do. Finally I would either get what I wanted and more often than not, be disappointed by how breakable or ultimately underwhelming they were. Or worse, I would receive some crap, cheap alternative, purchased last minute before the shops shut. And here I am aged 33.

Believable9 Unbelievable3

They might be crap but there will be nothing cheap about the last minute alternatives.
