I keep seeing people want koulibaly as our next central defender but I have watched him several times recently and I just do not understand what they see in him. Yes he is big fast and strong but he does not dominate like he should and his anticipation and positional sense is very poor at times. To me he is better version of Phil Jones but no where near as good as Vidic or Rio. Milans latest attacker Piazek made mincemeat of him this past week. He is not the first to do so.

I’ve been thinking along the same lines. Not seen him often but when I have he has been average.

Are there any defenders as good as rio ferdinand at his best in world football? There was a genuine period between 2007-2009 when he was the best defender in the world.

If we are going to judge signings on that basis we are going to struggle to sign anybody.

I would personally like us to sign toby alderweireld in the summer. Deal seems easy enough to conclude so we can get him in early on in the summer and he has good premier league experience. Plus with the way spurs full backs bomb on he has to do a lot of 1 vs 1 defending in wide areas which all of our current centre backs struggle with.

That’s not a bad shout DSG. He knows the EPL, and the price is ok, hopefully he could slot right in. I’m not sure who is right or left footed but we need a solid partner for Lindelof who seems to be growing into his role.

Harry Maguire anyone?

Toby is my first choice. I'm not sold on koulibaly either. And I'm always wary of the roger mills effect.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Feb 2019 23:14:39
I like Toby A. But would prefer someone younger who can be around for 4 or 5 years. The modern game is played at such speed and I do fear that within a year or so he won't quite be good enough. Plus he has had a few injuries and we all know that physically our league is the most demanding in the world. Ideally I would like Varane. The truth is that there are not many world class's players available in this position but if we want to be the best again then we need to have the best players we can. Also we all know how important it is for the best teams to have a solid defence. It is the foundation of any title winning team. Even Klopp belatedly realised this and signed VVD.

We need a strong left CB. They don't have to be left footed, but need to be top quality in that position.

Lindelof, Bailly, Smalling and even Jones all play their best at right CB. (some may say smalling and Jones play their best football warming the bench)

Rojo is our only natural left CB. He has looked good there in spells, but we can't ignore his injury record and that he also has spells of awful form.

Of that group Jones is probably the best pick. But his injury record is just abysmal.

Tuanzebe is an exciting young player. But not sure he is a natural LCB?

Alderwereld would be an excellent older head to bring in and play LCB. He can lead the back line and a young prospect can be brought into the team over time. We need a LCB first choice right now to fill the gap and stop the bleeding.

It does make you think when you could get Toby A and Milan Skriniar for the money quoted for Koulibaly. Or even less money to get Toby A and a Nikola Milenkovic.

It is worth £25 million just to weaken one of our rivals. Everybody knows Tottenham can't afford to spend big to replace him.

Agree2 Disagree0

03 Feb 2019 09:28:33
£25m for Alderweireld is the biggest no brainer of the century. Leader at the back, Premier League ready and proven and a class act in defence, and a great partner for Lindelof.

03 Feb 2019 09:57:38
Exactly Eric. We need an experienced head in there.

03 Feb 2019 10:39:44
De Ligt and Toby for me.

And move on Jones, Rojo and Bailly (unless he comes good) .

That would give us Lindelof, Toby, De Ligt, Smalling and Axel in the new season.

Wouldn't be many with better than that.

Macguire's not looked as good this season when I've seen him. Be good to take a closer look at him today. I would like to see some british players in the first team, but I have high hopes for Tuanzebe.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - Maguire is massively overrated by the english media. Theres no way he is good enough for a top side. The only british players I would even consider are Wan Bissaka and Sancho}

03 Feb 2019 16:10:31
Delano, I don’t get the Maguire hype. He likes a dribble and he’s not bad at set pieces but I’m not sure he’s a great defender, right now' we need a proper quality CB who knows how to position and defend.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Feb 2019 10:58:17
Alderweireld is clearly a great player and one I wouldn't be upset if we signed. However, I do have two small issues with signing him.
Firstly, he is exclusively a RCB. This would mean one of our current CB's would still have to play on their weaker side if we signed him. Secondly, his recent injuries are a concern moving forward.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Feb 2019 18:10:57
De Ligt does look good. Two footed, can play on either side RCB or LCB and has very good speed. Big and strong too. Would likely be very complimentary to Lindelof.

{Ed002's Note - Won’t be moving to MU.}

02 Feb 2019 14:32:04
On the manager position, l feel people are forgetting Ole is there and doing great but it's a great club team with him, Carrick, McKenna and Phelan are United through and through. My worry if we do go for Poch is he brings in a new team and that can upset everything. I feel it was the main reason Moyes struggled, instead of working with them and slowly working his way to build his team, he cleared house and lost a lot United experience. Would Poch be prepared to work with Carrick McKenna etc? For me a huge decision will be not only the manager but the back room team he keeps or brings in, for me he must keep these lads at least until he is fully embedded in the club.

During the special ones reign at the club poch name was mentioned by many as potentially our next manager .
Many pointed out that yes he had done an excellent job at Southampton and spurs but what had he won in terms of major trophies .

Ole has come in done great but the same people who didn't or don't want poch for lack of trophies regardless of playing style etc suddenly want ole after 8 wins .

I hope ole does amazing and gets the job but i suspect that poch will be our next manager.

My worry is how much is down to Mike Phelan, he has said he is only here until the end of the season, if he doesn't stay also, then I wouldn't be sure about giving it Ole permanently.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Feb 2019 20:00:42
Its too early to judge ole and to award gim the job imo.
I hope he gets it if he doesn't poch is a very good candidate.
He has not managed to get over the winners line just yet. That is a concern as he has come close quite often .
But that in itself is a good achievement. Spurs have been competitive for a few seasons under him. On a tight budget.
If ole gets us into the top 4 then he will have overturned a huge deficit and played every team in the league at least once and done better than any or most of them.

Good artice ed, seems to be a lack of central strikers in the game, but i guess that has been evened out with more wide forwards who carry the goalscoring burden.

{Ed001's Note - thank you mate. I agree, there were not a massive number to choose. Not top quality ones anyway. A lot of them seem to be coming to the end of their careers as well, such as Suarez, Ronaldo and Lewandowski.}

Guys, i still read the site avidly every day and enjoy it very much. Thanks Ken for your kind words. I thought I'll take a back seat for a few months after the "toxic fans debate". It showed that maybe we had a point about Mourinho being the main reason this club was in a mess (sorry Red Man) .
But thankfully he's gone, and Ole has been a breath of fresh air. I love the guy. He's intelligent, articulate and could turn out to be one hell of a manager. I'm looking forward to watching our matches again and I'm loving the bond the players have. They are playing with a smile, Ole has an infectious character, he's positive and humble, everything that the "big headed one" wasn't.
Hope we can beat Leicester and get into top4 position. This club is all about winning trophies and winning in the "right way". Previous three managers didn't get the plot. Ole and his staff totally get it.
I feel a cloud has totally lifted and there might be light at the end of the tunnel. And let's hope it involves our excellent young players too.

{Ed025's Note - good post that mate..

Hi AAA

Good to see you post, don’t be a back seat driver any more. I think Mourinho was one reason the club was in a mess, but by far not the only one. I stood by the manager rather than supported him because there was far more to it. It’s a mess we are not out of yet as there remains problems from the top and uncertainty is still there.

The key word is Ole COULD turn out to be one hell of a manager, it’s a major major decision in the club’s history. At least I enjoy our games now let’s hope everyone is still smiling this afternoon.

03 Feb 2019 14:01:18
AAA things are certainly looking up. Lots of positivity. Ole doing a terrific job. He has our better players playing well he has our not so good players playing better and there is nothing but positivity emanating from every corner of the club.
Really tough month ahead. If our crucial players stay fit and available it will be a big help. Shuffling the pack is difficult as we have seen. let's hope ole his staff and the players can work it out.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Feb 2019 10:41:46
Agreed red man and Ken. I think the club structure needs looking at as we've been saying for a long time. The delay with the DOF is confusing and irritating. I would love Poch to take over as i think his next club will finally see him accumulate the trophies he deserves. But if we can't get him, then Ole is not a bad back up.
Ken, i think the next month will really define our season. We are short on midfielders (been saying this for years! ) . I would not let Pereira or Mctominay anywhere near the first team. They simply are not good enough. Fred has been a major disappointment, but it could change for him with one good match. I would rather put one of our youngsters there, we have a couple who could do a very good job providing there's experience around them.
Great win last night, Leicester are no pushovers. We need a good performance against PSG and anything could happen.
