Lots of you suggesting pogba and morrisson b loaned out i would rather see them in the full side before making such rash decisions,i believe they would look far better alongside players of a similar class.

As far as Pogba and Morrison are concerned, tonight just proved they are not ready yet. Youngsters who break through at top clubs at their age tend to be blessed with outstanding pace. Neither of our two lads have that. They will need to mature physically over the next 12-24 months to have the strength to compete and maintain control of the ball under pressure at a senior level.

What was really disappointing tonight is the lack of real quality we have to put pressure on the first team squad. Diouf, Macheda, Evans, Gibson are nowhere near good enough. Valencia and Park were wasteful and provided no leadership as senior players, and the twins proved again that, unfortunately, they cannot cope with the physical demands of the English game. Again and again they have failed to complete a game due to physical weakness.

On that showing tonight, against a poor Championship side, Smalling is the only player worth a first team squad place.

However, the first team is becoming more and more reliant on an individual piece of skill to create something, but our team play lacks movement and creativity to break down defences. This was again in evidence tonight, and is a worrying trend throughout the club.

It basically comes back to not replacing Keane, Scholes, and Giggs. We cannot hope to maintain our position as a top team with Carrick, Fletcher, and Anderson, because they are simply not in the same class.

Before you reply, Cleverley is not the answer to our problems!

Sydney, I posted months ago that Macheda was one of the worst or should I say lucky players ever to wear the red shirt, he lacks that vital skill control, he also has an uncanny ability to find the opposition. The guy is absolutely crap, he makes Bellion look good. Funny thing is is you backed him & posted that it was the most ridiculous remark that you have ever seen.

I'm not even going to bother analysing the sh*t I just witnessed. Darron Gibson would look poor in League 2. Jonny Evans is just not good enough. Rafael and Fabio can't keep fit. Diouf is pish. Macheda still living on that Villa goal. Park is getting well past it. Sickens me to see Berbatov sulking while he gets paid 80,000 a week. Valencia not the same since his injury. At least Smalling, Fryers, Morrison and Pogba looked good tonight, despite what that person Marky Mark says.

Deja Vu.

Gonna put a point across here. Fair do's our expierinced players were p**s poor tnite BUT.... Do you remember a few weeks back when i said i feared that Fabio/Rafael were the ones that need replacing due to there constant injuries, well i think the fact they were injured again and went off had a bearing on the game, having to change things mid game, playing people out of position because of them picking up injuries ir'nt helping at all. Great players but a liability, i aint just blaming them for tonight but its something to take into consideration.... HERBIE

united lacked width today. Do United have a recognised left footed winger bar Ryan Giggs? The answer is no. Diouf was abysmal but the team selection tonight was questionable, Macheda started on the left? Park Ji Sung at right back lol Looking at the bigger picture the fringe players will be moved on come January or the summer. Fergie knows they aren't showing enough and tonight they've proved him right IMO so hey it may prove to be a blessing in disguise

"It's a cup tie and a quarter-final and the opportunity to get into semi-finals is there for both teams tonight. We know we have a job to do. We have a starting line-up with nine internationals in it so we expect to do well. I would love to have given the young boys a chance but I have a lot of players needing games tonight so that's why I have gone with an experienced team."

SHAME!

1 trophy less...
UEFA CL...
Remain 2 ONLY(I Doubt both of them) and don't call me negative, just watch the games and be the f****g quiet. So it means that we can end up with no trophies.

Just wonder what will be the excuse this time... The ref? I just don't know how low can we go!

If we have a good team, I don't want to live to see the worst one!

We have the most flops among the so called big 5.

I think that we really need to get a little bit more serious, we are letting our PAST GLORIES get fool of us, pas don't WIN games or championships.

The only thing we can do right now is believe and listen to the stupid excuses.

It is now time to clear out a layer of players who are blocking the youth from coming through. Tonight against a very average championship team we failed to show any imagination or creativity. Wow that was a surprise someone beat Johnny Evans to a header. The funniest thing of the night for me was just before extra time when Mike Phelan was walking around with his hands in his pockets not talking to anybody. What does this man actually do. Tony V what has happened to you? you used to go past players as if they weren't there but now you are static and always playing the ball backwards. But Sir Alex is right we don't need to buy in the window look at all that talent just bulging to get into the first team. Of course the Glazers would give him what ever he needs oh yes and Santa is real to. We got 99 problems but Vidic aint one. RAINFISHTROMBONE

I'm hungry now so if I was offered a packet of McCoys for Gibson, Macheda, Diouf and Evans, I would take the crisps, and I would not just give him/her the players, I'd drive them there. The youngsters looked good tho. Good passing Good movement. Good shooting from Morrison too. Fryers defended well also. I hope Raf and Fab are ok soon. They are very prone to injuries tho. Gilly

Well if that was putting our players in the shop window......quick better stick them in the store cuboard before anyone sees them. All they did tonight was succeed in knocking a zero off their fee.

Berbatov was totally not interested in leading the younger players and set an awful example.
Gibson was running around and kicking people and giving away fouls, belting the ball wide or high from 20-30 yards, and had the highest pass completion.......to palace players.
Macheda ALWAYS takes the wrong option and had the goal keeper gone the right way then his "cool" penalty wouldn't have looked to clever.
Park was a total headless chicken and gave the ball away all the time.
Evans was caught horribly under the ball for their winner, and generally looked abit nervous, which against a lower half championship team he just shouldn't be.
The twins did well enough up until they got injured.
Diouf i wasn't aware was on the pitch until about 20 mins and then he was just awful.
The only players from tonight who looked like they could be united class were Amos, Smalling, Rafael, Fabio, Fryers, Valencia, Pogba and Morrison.

I think Morrison and Pogba looked good but raw and need a loan. Fryers looks like he could be intergrated with the first team squad more often. I think Amos could do with a loan.

I am one of those who can see the talent Pogba and Morrison have. But to be completely honest, they simply are not ready yet. Both had glimpses of what they can do. And before i get replies of "They only played a half" or in pogbas case however long. I have no doubt they will be quality but rushing them into EPL games like you are all asking and wishing for would be quite foolish.

look at the difference between smalling and everyone else tonight and thats the difference between a first team player and a reserve
bit harsh on valencia who i like and the twins who as good as they are , are no good if they cant play 90 mins .
the rest are either not good enough or not ready.

Hi Guys
I'm proud to be a United fan but that performance tonight against an average Championship side was pathetic and embarrassing.I'm ashamed to say it but we are carrying too much deadwood. The only positives to come out of the match was Chris Smalling,I thought he was terrific and Ravel Morrison showed the odd touch of class.
Its time to get rid of Evans,Gibson, macheda,Diouff and I have to say Berba as well.
I am so disappointed after tonights lack of effort and class and I implore Fergie to accept what is in front of him and go and buy some world class players.

Great goal and well done to Palace, a lower end Championship team. However why am I not surprised by tonight?

Our Manager selected a shocking team to start the game, it seemed the only explanation was to increase the value of players who frankly are not fit to wear the shirt but who were bought and/or praised by SAF, step forward Gibson, Diouf, Evans, Berbatov, Macheda, Park & co. There is also the thought that the rumour the kids would start was put out to increase ticket sales. So much for the starting eleven but at what point will those on here with a ridiculously positive attitude at all costs finally acknowledge that there is a major problem at Old Trafford?

Pogba, Morrison and Fryers have a chance but not when the manager rates frankly poor players in front of them. I believe Rooney will not be missing what is going on and as our one world class player may well decide next summer that it is the time to move on. The writing is on the wall unless some notable money is spent. But dont worry when Rooney leaves SAF will tell you all that Berbatov will come into his own and the positive sheep on here will agree. Yes it is only the whatever cup but you all should see the writing on the wall with the lack of quality in our team

We are in decline, Liverpool 1990 and SAF has failed to plan and prepare for this situation over the last three summers and if the Glazers refused him the money he should not be saying the are wonderful owners.

I remain furious at the starting 11. The crowd remained quiet, why? Well look at the starting team and bar three kids where is the quality and players with genuine Manchester United quality?

As bad as we were tonight I cant believe there are people coming on slating Pogba and Morrison. Most of you have never bothered to watch them play in the youth team and reserves, you bay for them to be played and when they do, you write them off. Anyone who has watched these lads KNOWS they are the future. They were the only bright spots of tonight. Stick Messi in a midfield that includes Diouf and Gibson and he will struggle to look a world beater.

Didn't think it could get any more embarrassing, but we managed to get worse, no ideas, no quality crosses, 7 million passes sideways or backwards, we were useless. Well done Palace you deserved to win because you battled on through the whole game, if only we showed that battling spirit.
Macheda - Living on the Villa goal, he continually gave the ball away, time to get rid
Diouf - Not sure he contributed anything, a waste of time, bye bye
Gibson - His usual performance, enough said, off you go
Valencia - Supposed to be a winger yet spent most of the game inside and when he did play wide his crossing was awful
Park - Played in numerous positions and still never managed to play half decent in any of them
Evans - Struggled against average Championship players, will never make it
Smalling - Fantastic, best player on the park, sadly that tells the story of the game
Twins - As good as they are, we can't keep playing them and using subs because they can't complete 90 mins.
Pogba & Morrison - Never saw enough of them
Fryer - Impressive
Berba - Not interested again, sell him
Amos - Never had anything to do really
What a shambles ...................

Now people can see why we tried to sell Macheda to Sampdoria, why we were taking bids on Berbatov, Diouf & Gibson. Evans should have done better, how many more chances will he get at United? Park was woeful again. Valencia was good, Amos was good, Smalling was excellent. Pogba should have started, shame he was told to play in defence in the 2nd half of ET. Morrison should have started next to Berbatov. We were unlucky with the twins going off as they would have been great width come the end of the game. They are so injury prone, I cannot see them ever being regular first choice wing-backs.

Okay we never had our first team out, but we should have done better. Just couldn't gel. That is often the way when you make wholesale changes. Chelsea struggled to gel yesterday and Liverpool took full advantage of it.

Berbatov, Diouf, Macheda and Gibson were all in the shop window tonight, that's the only reason they started. We won't see any of them at United next season. Park's in danger too, he's getting on a bit now, and his performances of late have been poor. Having said that, he is usually a slow starter to the campaign, his best games always seem to come in the new year.

The twins' fitness is a big worry these days. I can't count the number of games that one of them has to come off injured. I can understand why SAF is reluctant to start both of them, two injuries tonight means two wasted substitutions. If they continue to get these niggling injuries on a game by game basis then it will affect their development. Hopefully it doesn't come to that.

I'm not too bothered about the result. Despite what SAF says, he treats the Carling Cup like the Milk Cup, unless United are drawn against one of the big boys. We all know Gibson, Macheda, Diouf and co are not United standard, and so does he. The only thing that worries me is when will we see Pogba and Morrison again this season? Hopefully they'll get more than a few cameo appearances before the end of the season.

Cue SAF telling us that the players will learn from this and grow as footballers. Well Gibson, Diouf and Macheda have been here before, lost games like this and clearly havent learnt so perhaps SAF should stop being so bloody stubborn and ship them out. And thats what it is, SAF is letting his own pride get in the way as he is so desperate to proven correct. The youngsters were the only bright points tonight but, at a time when players like Pogba want game time or risk looking elsewhere, getting knocked out of this competition leaves little opportunity for these lads to rack up the minutes.

Diouf, Macheda, Gibson, Berba, Park, what a waste of time, on the first half we wouldn't get £2 for the lot of them. Fabio off again, so yet again we have to waste a substitute when he plays, only Smalling looks a first team player.
I don't know what Fergie is up to, but if he honestly believes that the youngsters couldn't do better then that doesn't say much for his faith in them. If the rumours about Pogba are true then on the game so far he has a point because he must be sat there watching this rubbish and thinking what do I have to do to get in the team.
I never thought I would be this critical of a team selected by Fergie, but this must go down as one of our the worst teams he has picked in 25 years.
Wakey, wakey for the second half.

Evening gents, thoughts on the following:

1) personally, I am very disappointed that Gibson (who we tried to sell in the summer) started ahead of Pogba and Diouf started ahead of Morrison tonight. Was really excited to see these two play.

2) Wilfred Zaha looks a talent, may be one to think about as he looks very compfy on the ball and gave Fabio a horrible time!

3) Berbatov does not look interested tonight, can see him leaving in January but that would leave us with only Rooney, Hernandez and Welbeck so would SAF be in for a striker? Who?

What do we all think?

Simple really, bring on Pogba for Diouf, move Perk to LW and Macheda upfront. Now we have wasted a sub by starting with both twins on the field, we will likely see Morrison or Pogba for just ten minutes with the other getting 30-45 minutes.

Which one will come on for the 30-45 minutes lads? Pogba or Morrison?

Wouldn't it make more sense if we could have a B team playing in a lower league instead of the reserves.I think the younger players would be playing more competitive football and against more experienced players.I think this could be one of the reasons Spain are developing more talented youngsters than what England does. What do you all think?

While I am extremely disappointed that neither Pogba or Morrison are starting, I simply have to put my faith with Sir Alex and the staff on this. In truth none of us really have any idea of their state of readiness compared to the coaches, and I'd hate them to be rushed in. Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to see them start.

Fergie in his pre-match questioning:

"It's a cup tie and a quarter-final and the opportunity to get into semi-finals is there for both teams tonight. We know we have a job to do. We have a starting line-up with nine internationals in it so we expect to do well. I would love to have given the young boys a chance but I have a lot of players needing games tonight so that's why I have gone with an experienced team."

Atleast 5 of those players will not be at the club beyond this summer, some even Jan. So why give them games ahead of our future? Absolute BS..

Go back to 2005 when we were knocked out of Europe in similar circumstances. It took that to prompt SAF into action as he was in denial then with the Liam Miller type player.

It took the european exit to bring him round then as well

Red Man
---------------------
If I recall, the group stage exit in 2005 did nothing to change Fergie's mindset. He went out the following summer and bought Michael Carrick and sold Van Nistelrooy, while pinning all his hopes on Scholes getting over his eye injury and Solskjaer coming back from knee trouble. I fear he may try and do the same again because of his stubborn streak.

Sir Alex Ferguson is preparing a big money deal to secure the signature of AZ Alkmaar’s Rasmus Elm as his lack of midfielders is becoming a big issue according to the Daily Star.

The Swedish international caught Ferguson’s eye while playing for his country against England at Wembley earlier this month and a January move could now be on the cards.

With Anderson and Tom Cleverley on the sidelines and Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick struggling for form with Antonio Valencia on the comeback from a summer injury, strength in depth is becoming an issue for United who are trailing their rivals City by five points in the title race.

23-year-old Elm wants the chance to prove his worth in a top league in Europe and the Premier League would no doubt be suited to his neat passing style that Fabio Capello’s England found difficult to deal with at Wembley.

Elm is also becoming prolific in front of goal in Holland and goalscoring midfielders are hard to come by in the Premier League. An £18million bid could be sufficient for the Swedes dream move.

Wesley Sneijder was Sir Alex’s number one transfer target to replace the retired Paul Scholes in the summer, but a £40million value has proved difficult to negotiate on and Elm may be a more realistic target.

Manchester United are in pole position to sign Serbian defender Neven Subotic in the summer according to reports in Germany today.
Reports are suggesting that Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has instructed his scouts to file a report on the 22-year-old with a view to making a bid for the player in the summer as a long term replacement to Rio Ferdinand and could form a potent defensive unit with Phil Jones.
A fee of around £20 million is thought to be in the offering from the Manchester club and with Borussia Dortmund struggling, they could be forced to accept a deal for Subotic.
SOURCE: FootyLatest
Neven Subotic is considered one of the best up and coming defenders in Europe after 18 months of consistent performances alongside Borussia Dortmund defensive partner Matt Hummels and now it appears that speculation of a move away from the Bundesliga title holders is reaching fever pitch.
Man United have looked less than impressive in a number of matches this season and it seems likely that Rio Ferdinand may either of offloaded or given a less regular role in the starting line up. Sir Alex Ferguson brought in Phil Jones and Chris Smalling to help build a defence for the long term but it seems that there may be a need for further additions.
Nemanja Vidic has spent much of the season out injured and has also been linked with a move away from Old Trafford. Jonny Evans has at times looked to have improved but has also made crucial mistakes, such as his silly sending off against rivals City.
22 year old Subotic could very well be the ideal man to take the mantle from England veteran Ferdinand and as with some other members of Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund side, there may well be tough decisions to be made as Europe’s elite prepare moves for the club’s top young talents.

Manchester United striker Federico Macheda is eyeing a loan move to another Premier League club during January.

Macheda, 20, burst on the scene in April 2009 by scoring the winner against Aston Villa at Old Trafford, but since then has failed to live up to that promising start and was sent on loan to Sampdoria last season.

He scored just one goal with the Italian side, who were relegated to Serie B at the end of the campaign, and insists he has no desire to return to his home country.

"An assignment on loan in January? We have opportunities, but I definitely won't be going back to Italy," Macheda told tuttomercatoweb. "I would like to play in England, today and tomorrow, because I want my future to be at Manchester United. There are proposals from the Premier League, we are evaluating them and we'll make our choices when the time comes."

Macheda has made just one Premier League appearance this term, having found his path to a first-team place at United blocked by Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, Javier Hernandez and the emergence of England international Danny Welbeck.

"Welbeck has exploded, I was injured for a month and I only came back for 10 minutes on Saturday [against Newcastle]," Macheda said. "Welbeck is a great player and a very good person. I have played alongside him since I was 16 and we were in the youth teams together.

"I am tipping him to be a big star in the future. I also believe I am capable of matching him because, despite some criticism, I am still only 20 years old."

Apparently young Pogba is off. His agent is taking him where the money is and he will end up at City by the end of January. They are prepared to offer him triple what United will offer.

Don't be surprised if he isn't given a run tonight, but Morrison is.

Good morning Guys

I'm actually quite looking forward to tonights game as the prospect of seeing both Pogba and Morrison in the starting line up is very appealing. If they are to be serious contenders for the first team then they really need to look impressive against Palace.I just hope Fergie doesn't go overboard with the youngsters I would like to see some of our first team squad given match time.
I don't usually give team sheets but this is the type of team I'd like to see tonight.

1. Lindegaard
2.Rafael
3. Fabio
4.Pogba
5. Jones
6. Smalling (if fit )
7. Park or Valencia
8. Morrison
9. Berbatov
10. Will Keane
11. Giggs.

I'm not saying that what its going to be but it would be good to see that sort of side.

Red man i expected that response. No i don't want to settle for second best i don't think anyone on here has ever said that. As i said and as sir alex said there are only a few top quality players in the world who would be worth the cost. As i said most of them play for clubs who wouldn't sell their best players to a rival but you ignored that. I do think that planning should have been better but whats gills role in all this. Its not like we haven't tried for players. You seem to think its easy to sign players. Also i have to agree with the point keeanoh said that we rarely sign successful centre midfielders. I'm prepared to give you the youth a chance although i'd like a signing but who moves in january thats top class. We're in transition and sometimes you have to accept one step back in order to make two steps forwards.

As we approach January the clamour to sign a midfielder(s) heightens with all sorts of players either linked to us or identifeid by supporters as the answer to our problems.
In the rush to sign someone let's consider our record in signing central midfielders; those wanting a top player, remember Veron, a true world class player, Kleberson, a world cup winner, Poborski, star of Euros, all not suited to the EPL. Hargreaves a fantastic player sadly blighted by injury. We also signed the likes of Djemba Djemba, Liam Miller etc, and the jury is out on Anderson.
When we signed Keano and Ince they were players of immense potential at the time. Indeed our most succesful midfield signing in the last few years is Carrick, if you don't believe me check the trophies we have won since he signed and the appearances he has made.
We have had utility players filling the midfield, O'Shea and Johnsen spring to mind and also signed a number of wide midfielders like Nani, Young, Valencia, Kanchelskis (apologies for spelling), Cruyff, Tosic etc.
I know I am approaching senility, but to my mind in the last 20+ years we have only signed 3 central midfielders who have really made it at United, Keano, Ince and yes despite all of his critics Carrick. It is no coincidence that Carrick has been a regular during a hugely succesful period.
January could be interesting or maybe Fergie will wait for youth to blossom as our record on signing central midfielders doesn't make good reading.
