A rather quiet day for United in the news department guess. Because of Munchonacentreback.
Just a little pat on the back to the Ed's. The busy time of the year is coming up for you people. ;) {Ed004's Note - Yeah... Tests!}

Seeing some of Carricks passes this season and for England, I would like to see him play a bit further up the field with a midfield "destroyer" sitting behind him.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Why fix something when its not broke?

Ste.

Agree0 Disagree0

It's been broken for years!

Agree0 Disagree0

Dead right jonny, moyes should be able to see that 2 quality midfield players needed

Agree0 Disagree0

I meant carrick being moved further up the pitch when he is so consistant in a deep role.

Is Strootman similar to Javi Martinez on how he plays?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

No, Javi Martinez is a defensive midfielder. I would say Strootman is more in the Ramires from Chelsea mould.

Does a lot of work around the pitch but can also give you something when on an attack.

Agree0 Disagree0

Cheers jake, haven't seen much of him and he looks like a big lad who can put himself about.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ramires is a fantastic midfielder, true box to box player. If strootman is anything like him I will welcome him with open arms

After all the reports of Ronaldo, bale, fabregas, falcao, lewandoski and Erickson!
Would people be happy with the highly regarded pardoe, ljajic and varela.
I don't want to appear disheartened, because I'm not!
But I've been reading the site for a couple of transfer windows and they've gone pretty much the same, fantastical fantasy purchases are gradually replace by more sombre and realistic transfers!
I'm optimistic Moyes will make the leap to top club management but as fan's we'll have to back when the 'excrement hits the fan'
I think United's future is bright, we have much to look forward to!
eds you do a sterling job and the site is cracking!
Syd I hate to say, your posts do make a lot of sense!

AS far as our wings go:

Sounds like Bale is going to RM. Still dreaming of Ronaldo coming back, but would be quite happy with Di Maria.

Valencia was obviously poor last season, but even when on form, he gives only crosses, no goals. Should we consider him more often at RB?

Nani is maddeningly inconsistent, but he can beat his man and score. Not that many wingers in the world can do that. I'm ambivalent about him.

I don't rate Young at all. I think Zaha should be eased into the rotation at left wing. Welbeck puts in a good shift at LW just from his work rate alone, though he is not really a winger.

Kagawa's skills are wasted out there. He needs to feature more in the AM role, which begs the question about Rooney of course.

ZIDANIEL {Ed004's Note - I'd be happy with either Bale or Lamela for a left footed winger or Isco, Reus, Sanchez, Ronaldo and I'm not sure about Ribery I reckon he could be available this season but I hate him personally and not sure I would want him at the club. I also reckon he is a bit over rated!}

Agree0 Disagree0

Does anyone else think Phil Jones is far too talented to be wasted in defence? I'd far rather see him play in midfield. Obviously he needs a bit of work but he could be very good there.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

31 May 2013 18:20:44
I'm in two minds with Jones. Firstly i'm not convinced he has the technical ability to play in midfield, his passing range is limited and his touch can be clumsy at times. His best position does seem to be in the heart of defence, but his tendency to throw himself fully into tackles and challenges will always put him in danger of getting injured or giving away a penalty. He has had several injuries already since he joined us.

I think maybe the position for him is as a defensive midfield, that way his limited passing isn't an issue, and he is should be in less danger of having to throw himself into challenges. But he would have to work on his touch and his passing. It would work best if he played this role in a high pressing team, that way he wouldn't be under pressure so much.

But in saying that I think he will become a centre back, it will require less upheval and he would settle into it easier. {Ed004's Note - Would he be perfect if we were to play a formation with 3 at the back? Means as long as Everyone! around him is good on the ball there is no dependency on him but allows him to drive out of defense with the ball at times}

Agree0 Disagree0

Not drunk yet but working on it :) I agree 100 % but Jones does not seem attacking minded or if you prefer have the instinct to be a box to box player.

Agree0 Disagree0

Still a top future CB for me, not convinced on his technique to play CM at the top level. The only worry I have is whether he gets enough game time at CB to develop his game. He's the perfect long term replacement for Vidic in my eyes, trouble is Vidic is still quality and hopefully still has a couple years in him. The one position we are over stocked in it seems is CB, I hope Rio takes more of a back seat next season allowing more playing time to the likes of Jones and Smalling.

Agree0 Disagree0

He is ok if you want a defensive guy sitting in front of back four but he clearly struggles when being asked to be a creative force and his passing is not good enough at this point.

Shahram

Agree0 Disagree0

4-1-3-2 Jones in front of the back four with kagawa carrick strootman/midfielder in front of him I think its the way to go

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Jun 2013 09:00:40
Phil Jones isn't good enough for United. Any footballer with a poor touch and poor ball skills doesn't have a future in the modern game. He is just another player in the mould of young, strong, big heart but sadly no finesse

Agree0 Disagree0

No name

you're kidding right? jones is 21 years old And has another 15 years ahead of him as a top centre half.

he's quick, powerful and has decent positioning and anticipation. we don't need him to show silky skills to leave us wondering whether he's gazza's love child. as long as he stops the ball going near our goal and gives it to someone who can pass, that's good enough for me.

reminds me of John terry but without being a t**t.

Agree0 Disagree0

K79, Excited? I would say I am. We have just won the English Premier League for the 20th time and our kids won the first U21 Premier League.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Suarez leaving will give us another 40-50M to re-invest in the team, in all honesty I think it could be best that Suarez leaves if we're able to buy 3 brilliant players with the money generated.

You've lost Fergie, Phelan, Rene, Scholes, Steele. , you've appointed a defensive minded coach who likes to play hoof ball because your hierarchy have no ambition and couldn't afford to splash out for the top guns ala Mourinho, Klopp. , So instead of bashing us I think it's you who needs cheering up. {Ed004's Note - I wouldn't be so confident of getting anywhere near 50 million for Suarez after his statement. I reckon you lot are looking at maybe 30-35 mill tops. Remember most clubs might not want to take the risk due to his public image and disciplinary record. However, I'm not sure why we should be worried? We have a young squad who are only going to come back stronger after another years experience and you can be garunteed Moyes will be back financially this summer}

Agree0 Disagree0

Haha, i'm so glad Sydney is on our side

Ed004, I do not mind the aggro, I'd rather take all the aggro to give you eds a easier life. If they are gunning for me, it gives the eds a break from abuse ;)

Sydney! {Ed004's Note - Didn't think of it like that but that site was hectic earlier I can't remember the last time other than today I edited that page}

Agree0 Disagree0

Plymouth, we have lost the greatest manager of all time. The others are not important. Scholes hasn't been vital to our team for many years now and the rest are just coaching staff.

You can keep believing that United will become a 'Liverpool' but I think you will be disappointed come May next season when we are Champions for the 21st time. You will be 10th at best.

£35m for Suarez is not going to go far. Bare in mind Allen & Borini cost around that much. Are they 'brilliant players'? I think not. This summer you will be lucky to attract any half decent player to your declining, mediocre club.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed Bayern, City, Madrid, Barca, Monaco and PSG will be be intersted which will only drive the price up.

Plymouth Red. {Ed004's Note - I can't see him going to Bayern (Lewandowksi, Gomez, Manzukic, Pizzaro all Strikers, Gotze, Muller, Kroos as CAM's) , he wants out of the country so that is City out and Barcelona will not want him. You are hoping Madrid want him but Cavani is their primary ST target so that leaves two clubs in Monaco who have already spent a lot and PSG who I reckon will be interested.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Plymouth, it doesn't really work like that. There will not be a bidding war like eBay. Suarez will decide which club 'HE' wants to join and he and that club will do their best to make it happen. If it's RM then Liverpool are in for a rough ride as they are famous for getting players on the cheap by playing dirty. Suarez' latest tactics whilst away on international duty is probably the work of RM and their advice. If he says to Liverpool that I am leaving and I only want to join RM, then it will be difficult for Liverpool to hold out for silly money. Not to mention RM do not have silly money to spend. £35m at best for me. Sorry ;)

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Syd your so bias it's unreal, Chelsea are going to blits the league, if Suarez goes it won't be for anything under 40M as that's in his contract, Madrid are infact the most interested party at this time, and what has the amount Monaco have spent got to do with anything? if they want Suarez which they will then we will milk them for what it's worth.

Plymouth Red.

Agree0 Disagree0

Plymouth (Tom?), this time last year I said United would win the league, City 2nd and Liverpool will finish 7th. I may well be biased, but I am also not deluded. I read on the Liverpool page the other night from one poster that next season Liverpool will finish top four, then the season after you will win the league. Sorry mate but that is delusion. To be fair Liverpool have a lot of fans who fit this criteria. With Suarez you will finish 7th, 6th at an absolute push. Without him you will finish lower than Swansea and WBA in 9th or 10th position. Sorry mate, but that is how I see it. Chelsea will be our closest rivals next season, but they will not blitz it, we blitzed it this season and our team/squad will only improve. You are still still in decline and getting worse.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

You could have £100m for Suarez and it still makes no difference to the players you buy, who wants to play for a team not in champions league for 4 years and counting? You can't attract the top players regardless of your budget so keep dreaming pal!

Mufc ok

Agree0 Disagree0

31 May 2013 22:07:07
Plymouth hasn't a clue. Why would Monaco want him with Falcao, Rodriguez and Ocampos as a forward line. Paris wouldn't either, nor would Bayern or Barca. Its pretty much a Madrid only ball game. I reckon 28 at best, you know how Madrid like to drive a price down and they do have worse debts than us. {Ed004's Note - Well according to scousers no one is in a worse position than us so for Plymouths state of mind let him think we are '1 billion' pounds still in debt}

Agree0 Disagree0

31 May 2013 22:22:21
Syd I'm really worried about Liverpool after all they've signed Aspas who I saw a fan on twitter claim was better than higuain! I also saw one write if Suarez goes then we lose our chances of the title but still finish In The top 4! Can always count on lfc fans to give you a good chuckle!

Agree0 Disagree0

31 May 2013 22:41:29
Never even heard of their hat trick of new signings. I hear the price is 250 to 1 to go down. Surely worth a tenner, it doesn't come off its a tenner. It comes off well sod the money the comedy is far better reward.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think your "1billion" in debt, but what I do believe is that your going to loose the Fergie factor, Moyes won't attract the players you'll expect him to and Mourinho will spend crazy amounts as he usually does and Chelsea will blitz the league.

I believe we will come 5th/4th next season with or without Suarez.

Plymouth Red.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Jun 2013 00:15:25
Plymouth 4th or 5th from bottom? Yeah i'd go with that, sounds fair. I think there are four worse teams than you.

Agree0 Disagree0

Plymouth red, I'm sorry you finished what 7 with him, Sturridge isn't exactly the answer, gerrard is going down hill fast, you won't be signing eriksen, face it no one wants to go to Liverpool anymore, they are an average side with one special player who wants to leave. We look forward to next season when we are challenging for trophies whilst you lot struggle to get into Europa league.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Jun 2013 07:40:44
Serious question Plymouth mate, How do you rate Kolo Toure? And do you think he is upto stepping into Carragher shoes?

Personally I think he is past his best and relys on his wifes diet pills to keep in shape. He has lost a yard of pace and his positioning can be suspect. Good though for defending corners.

So what do you think? Is he the kind of player a team challenging for a champions league place would go for?

Agree0 Disagree0

Firstly, respect to Plymouth for coming on here and having a good go.

we all know his loyalties lie at the wrong end of the east lancs but to be fair I do think Liverpool might fair quite well from selling ratfink.

you have to admitted Rodgers has made some good signings in Sturridge and coutinho. toure for free wasn't a bad move either considering fenways reported financial problems and the inexperience of the squad in actually winning anything (sorry, that was actually a sly dig).

Rodgers probably won't have much of a net transfer budget to go at either (ouch, another dig) so an extra £35 mill on top of £15 mill for Carroll would really give him some options. granted, he'd need to get himself a couple of new strikers but I'm sure if he targeted the likes of benteke and perhaps Defoe, he, d keep some change to improve other areas of his squad.

can't believe if spent so much energy discussing liverpool. it can't do any harm to be objective though; they're so far behind us its like discussing an ant colony.

With Suarez likely to be moving Mardid, Benzema becomes avaliable? Also Lewandowski is Bayern bound surely he's worth a £20 million bid. If so and the other transfer targets become a success I would line up like this. De Gea, Rafael, Jones, Vidic, Baines, Strootman, Carrick, Kagawa, Benzema, Di Maria and RvP.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

31 May 2013 16:07:53
My mate works for Warrior who sponsor Fellaini, he is defo not comin Utd. He was in there head office last week and said he wants til at least january and if he does leave he wants to move to london. They think it will b Arsenal or Chelsea.

Also Varela deal is on hold due to his club holding out for bigger clauses. Baines is apparently a potential with Moyes telling him to stay one more season last year to give Everton one more year with him.

Naniis definitely leaving with Porto the favs to sign him with money from Rodriguez and Moutinho deal.

The big news from an inside utd source is the talk around the staff is there is going to be a "big signing" that may see Rooney not needed. They think it could be Benzema, but I hope that is wrong!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I can def see Nani going to Porto.

Agree0 Disagree0

31 May 2013 18:24:46
If we were to sign a striker from Real Madrid i'd rather go for Higuain than Benzema. Benzema has turned us down once and has caused several problems within in the squad and is yet to stand trial for paying for sex with an under aged prostitute. So I wouldn't want to bring those kind of problems to our door.

Agree0 Disagree0

Benzema? I'd be worried if folk thought he was a big name signing! There are only 2 big names left who we should be trying to sign IF they become available and that's Ronaldo and Bale. I don't see us having the cash to bid for either but hope I'm wrong.

Agree0 Disagree0

31 May 2013 15:07:13
we need to be realistic and not deluded. I can believe people think we will get fabregas, fellaini, bale, ronaldo, di maria and lewondoski.
we will however get strootman, varela and couple of youths.

Rooney looking to leave as well as nani and valencia

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I can't believe you just used Fellani in the same bracket as Ronaldo and Bale

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah. Let's be realistic. We might be Manchester United but we can't shop at the top table any more. It is sad but true.

Eds as its my birthday, tell me my birthday wish has come true and Ronaldo or bale are going to sign?!;-) get back to reality, I think strootman is almost a done deal but who else seems likely? Thanks:) {Ed004's Note - Well we are signing both Bale and Ronaldo... Unfortunately though I can't see either signing though I hope we go for Di Mara or Lamela and then try for any sort of right footed winger such as Isco, Reus, Sanchez or if anyone knows of any other right footed winger that is impressing in Europe atm and don't dare say Walcott!!}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Lamela would be awesome! I don't see why we don't just put a cheeky bid in for him, we could get him under the radar whilst everyone else is focusing elsewhere. he's just what we need

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed, would you not say that Di Maria is more effective from the right anyway? And given that Rooney is likely to still be in the team that leaves the left handside for Kagawa. Can't imagine us getting something like Di Maria & Sanchez or Isco in the same window. {Ed004's Note - Yes I reckon Di Maria and Lamela are both better on the right and the others are all better on the left I reckon Kagawa should play centrally and Rooney should be sold}

Agree0 Disagree0

Lamely it Sanchez on the right Rooney sold kagawa in middle and zaha on left

19JackC94 {Ed004's Note - Zaha is not ready yet for the Premiership imo and if struggles vs the likes of Wayne Bridge etc in the Championship what hope do we have of him coming up against Lahm etc in the Champions League}

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed how did he struggle against bridge? I'm quite certain that he scored two goals in the second leg and was the star man. {Ed004's Note - Because he was pretty anonymous all game until he got the headed goal and then he moved central}

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks TK-Red. What about the 1st team going players?

Agree0 Disagree0

1st team going players? Do you mean the ones who may make the step up? Nobody can say for certain to be honest. There are quite a few of us on this site that keep a close eye on the reserves and we all have our different opinions. I think it is more likely that we will see a fair few go out on loan next season at some point. I can see a repeat of this season where we see the likes of Scott Wootton, Jesse Lingard and Michael Keane and maybe even Tom Thorpe be given the odd run out in the Capital One Cup and then see where that takes us. Some might even think Charni Ekangamene is ready for first team football somewhere but, personally, I would keep him in our Under 21s to allow him to keep developing the way he did this season. I think we all expect Adnan Januzaj to play a similar role and then if we go out of the Cup those same players could well be sent out on loan as will, IMO, Will Keane. We are fortunafe that we have some very good Under 18's who are more than capable of playing at Under 21 level meaning that we have opportunities to send some of the more experienced Under 21 lads out on loan if we choose to. All that being said, the club might be wary of farming out too many of them to other clubs when they may be better served building on this seasons Under 21 PL title win.

That's my take on things anyway.

TK-Red

Agree0 Disagree0

Yea thanks TK-Red. I have seen a few U21 games this season. Januzj will make it I think. but what about the likes of (please excuse spelling) Vermij Vessli Lawence Tunniclift?. I rate charni as a ball winning midfielder The U18 have some very good players who could make the step up in a few years like Pereira Daehi and Barmby

Really worried about the EPL as it seems to have gone massively out of fashion. A few years ago so many more players wanted to come to 'the hardest league in the world' but now we seem to be loosing all of our big stars. If we loose Bale, Suarez (who's a villain but a quality footballer) and even Rooney it's another blow to our once great league.

This season we need our teams to keep it's world class players, all of our teams to qualify in the champions league, one or two to make it too the semi's and one to make it to the final to regain some grandeur and make the league more appealing. If we don't I see it getting weaker and weaker as it won't attract the quality we need, IMO it's a make or break season for the EPL. So for once i'm hoping Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and even City get a lot better next season because if not even our club won't be able to compete in Europe in a few seasons time.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Baines is not odds on to join at all, as he will be wanting regular games with it being world cup year and he'll not get that sat on the Utd bench.

BANTER PLEASE EDS

What would be peoples opinions syd and ed4 if we where to try adapt a chelsea style next year and play with attacking mids with wingers such as valencia zaha young giggs and even welbeck all able to come add width and pace when needed

Just a possibility against Wigan?
Obvo in normal matches evra rio vidic and Rvps names would be there.
. DDG. RAFA. JONES. EVANS. FABIO. CARRICK. STROOTMAN. THIAGO. KAGAWA. ERIKSEN. CHICA {Ed004's Note - I don't think we have an interest in Eriksen he is Dortmund bound. I would not play Alcantara out wide as I don't think he has ever played there in his life. Also Fabio is not good enough and RVP has to start as does a fit Vidic}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

How well did that work for Chelsea last season? Their team is also far better suited to it even if we made your suggested signing with Mata, Oscar and Hazard.

Also if we were using three attacking midfielders I'd like to think moyez would give Nick Powell and Zaha a chance there next season. Don't want so many signings that Nick, Wilfried and Junazaj don't have a chance in the future.

And yeah where is RVP?

Agree0 Disagree0

I get what your saying but I'm not saying play them wide I mean like a RAM with all 3 of them been able to free roam and interchange. Plus a championship Wigan side most likely without there best names I think the squad I mentioned would walk it with the likes of rvp been able to come on near the end

19JackC94 {Ed004's Note - But you need a bit of speed as an out ball like the polish guy at Dortmund, Ribery and Robben are both quick, Ronaldo at Madrid and Hazard and Ramires at Chelsea}

Agree0 Disagree0

Chelsea's season wasn't down to them 3 players alone though was it, it's a team game. And yes I agree with what you said about nick Wilf and adnan but my worry would be are they ready for such a dominant role

And do you's not think we could beat a weaker Wigan side with rvp on the bench, we aren't reliant upon him are we?

19JackC94

Agree0 Disagree0

31 May 2013 11:42:55
We don't need baines! As good as he is not world class and is already 28 hence we would have to be looking for his replacement in a few years Aswell. Evra has just had a great season and could defiantly play another Aswell as buttner and fabio whom I beleive both have the potential if given the chances. People say fabio couldn't get into the qpr team but this is purely down to Harry's lack of rotation. With the right coaching and some pointers from rafeal I think we could have another gem on our hands with fabio

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Baines is almost up there with any left back in the world IMO. It's only because he plays at Everton that some people don't rate him that highly.

Not sure about Fabio yeah give him a chance but having an older pro at the club like Baines will only help him improve.

Buttner has potential but on the left wing IMO.

Agree0 Disagree0

Surely evra could be that old pro, plus evra has the experience of winning medals

19JackC94

Agree0 Disagree0

Jack I'm sorry mate but Baines is the best left back in the premier league by a fair distance, his deliver is consistently excellent, he scores goals, very solid defensively he reminds me of a Gary Neville type fullback except he scores a lot more goals.

Agree0 Disagree0

Baines is a good left back and consistant, but one of the best in the world, come on? Persoanlly I don't think we need him or a new left back this summer either. I think Evra was ok last year for the first time in a while an dhas another season in him and we have Buttner and Fabio as back up. Buttner personally I don't see lasting too long. Fabio derserves a chance just because he didn't get many games out on loan doesn't mean he isn't good enough. I think our priorities are in midfield both centrally and out wide as forgetting age, it is the one area we don't have consistantly performing players of top quality, bar last season Carrick.

I think Fabregas is a no go. Graham Hunter has just been on a web site (Talksh*ite) and said he see's Fabregas staying at Barcelona. He went through a number of reasons why he will stay which made a lot of sense so I think that this is a non-starter.
In other news he did mention that City have already agreed personal terms with Isco, Navas and are now moving to try and get Pepe from Real Madrid.
So City look like there going to spend big.
I have no doubt Jose at Chelski will do the same and I think Wenger will spend some serious cash this summer.
The Glazers really do need to put there hands in there pockets and back Moyes with whoever he wants or we will struggle with the side we have now winning the Premiership and we are not even close in Europe.
Strootman, Fellaini, and a winger maybe Di Maria and Leighton Baines I think would improve us in the Premiership and in Europe.
I would be happy with those buys and they are all realistic buys. Forget the Bales, Ronaldo's and Fabregas.

Well isco is over rated, navas gets homesick playing away games in spain and pepe is just a dirty thug hardly anything to lose sleep over. Arsenal won't spend, we've heard it every year for at least the last five years about this supposed seventy million quid war chest. They've never spent it and I don't think they will now. Players will want to wait to see if they make the champions league first. Chelsea will be the biggest threat.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think that is a realistic summer Simmo and it will cost a significant amount too. I would like Thiago instead of Fellaini. Thiago, Strootman, Di Maria and Baines sorts everything out imo.

No name

The only reason why United won the premiership with that team this season was because of one man. Sir Alex Ferguson with his drive, determination and winning mentality that he drives into the players.
No other manager in my eyes would have won the Premiership last season with that squad of players.
You look at our first 11 compared to City and Chelsea and we are way to thin. The only world class players we have are Rooney (on his day) and RVP. Apart from that they are all good players and most of them are now coming into the twilight of there careers, Vidic, Ferdinand, Giggs.
Anderson and Nani are a waste of time and I think (hopefully will be sold) Fletcher will never be the same player and wasn't a great player anyway. Valencia and Young are average at best.
I would take Isco in my side anyday of the week and a think a lot of united fans on here would.
Like I said, Fellaini, Strootman are more realistic targets.

Fletcher and Anderson s*** on Fabregas when they are fit. Sadly none of them are. Fletcher is one of the best box to box midfielders imo. When played in a midfield three he is very effective.

REDFAITH

Fletcher was great for us a couple years back, I remember how he was robbed of his champions league final appearance against barca in 09 for one of the most brilliant tackles i've seen on fabregas. Sadly he'll likely never return to that level or even get back.
DHK

Agree0 Disagree0

De Gea, Jones, Rafael for starters Simmo are three young players I expect nearly every club in the premiership and across Europe would love to have in there squad. I think you are beign a tad over critical. Do you really think signing Felliani improves our team and again. another person mentioning Strootman, have you seen him play more than five times as I barely know a person that has? I agree we need some good improvements this summer, personally I think this Utd sign is most boring to watch in style and entertainment I can remember in the whole or Fergies reign and that is partly due to the lack of inventiveness and flair in positions. So yes I agree with your argument we need to spend this summer and that we have some kind of average deadwood, but let's not be over critical, there are also several excellent youngsters both coming through and already playing and experienced in the side. 3 in 3 out exlcuding Zaha/Scholes etc and personally I hope none of them are Felliani or Baines. i'm not expecting more than one possible big name or playing football manager 2013 on here but I think there are definately more exciting targets than those

The improvment needs to be in the central midfield area and pherhaps a new winger.

Fletcher one of the best? Jesus did you watch the same united as me! Scholes been finished for 4 years, Anderson not good enough, fletcher never been good enough, cleverly needs more time, we are so weak in CM we get smashed in Europe and against likes of city in center mid! We really need at least 2 world class CM, have for a long time

@Simmo

I mean Fletcher is good at what he does. At being a box to box midfielder set out specifically take the opposition's playmaker out of the game.

Anderson in his first season was really good and I had high hopes for him. Wenger has moaned quite a few times about how Fletcher was sent out there to stop his team play. I think that says a lot about Fletcher.

I'm not saying he is a creative midfielder or that he is an attacking threat. But you need a player like that if you are going to win things. Chelsea have Ramires in that role for eg. Very "effective" is the word I used.

And after our clubs dealings I can't see business going on with our clubs? He also has 3 years remaining on his contract! Another reason, and I've researched this one, is his apparent dislike of the north! 1. We already have a special player in Van Persie, a special keeper in De Gea and a special defender in Vidic.

Lots of people getting carried away with all these transfer rumours.
Fabregas, bale, Ronaldo, reus, it's never going to happen, every year we get excited and it ends up bin disappointing, ano we got van persie last year but we was linked with some big names. The players who we are seriously looking at is Kevin strootman, and thiago, we was offerd di Maria, but looks like agent fees are the problem and now Monaco are stepping in,, gaitan might be the option we go for, but the feeling is that nani will stay,
Marm

Believable0 Unbelievable0

31 May 2013 02:38:23
First of all, since we are linked to every player under the sun, let's look first at which positions need addressing and which players we may sign. The main areas are of course left and right wing and centre mid positions. For the wings, I think we will consider Di Maria, Gaitan, Sanchez, Reus, Bale, Ronaldo, and with Robben and Ribery potentially leaving Bayern, them too. However, the only likely or available players here are Gaitan, Sanchez and Di Maria, any or two of which I would be happy with. For centre mid, along with Strootman and Thiago, I also think we will enquire about Modric, and of course Fabregas, hopefully Gundogan and maybe nip to Turin to speak to Marchisio or Vidal. Again the only likely players there are Thiago and Strootman. Then onto left back. This all depends on whether Evra leaves. If Evra stays, then sign Shaw and loan him back. If Evra leaves, then sign Baines and Shaw and again loan Shaw back. Now centre forward, this depends on whether Rooney stays. If he stays, another centre forward is a luxury. If he leaves, a centre forward is a necessity, with Lewandowski, (however unlikely) and maybe Benteke or Lukaku, (available?) options.

Personally, for me a perfect summer would be:

One of Bale/Reus/Ronaldo
One of Sanchez/Di Maria/Gaitan
One of Fabregas/Modric/Gundogan/Marchisio
Then Baines dep. on Evra and Shaw.

However a realistic summer would be:

Both of Di Maria and Sanchez
One of Thiago/Fabregas/Modric
Strootman
Baines

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Honestly I have a hard time seeing your realistic summer happening.

Agree0 Disagree0

Bale, reus, ronaldo, gundogen, modric will not be coming to ot

Agree0 Disagree0

No Baines! Evra just had the best year he's had in years, Buttner has shown promise and we still have Fabio on the books. If Baines was 22 then it might make sense, but in a year or two, when evra needs a replacement, Baines will be 30. He's a short-term veteran fix, but we don't have a problem at LB.

Agree0 Disagree0

KG, I don't actually want Baines, I just think Baines is very likely, plus he is a very good player and Evra is often lazy defensively, Lastly, Evra has said he wants to go back to France, and Monaco apparently want him.

Agree0 Disagree0

You really don't think we have a LB problem?! Evra is very lazy and we concede a lot of goals from the right hand side!

Ste.

Agree0 Disagree0

Another thing, Ruud, I don't think that is unlikely for this summer. Moyes knows we need new players and the boards knows Moyes needs money to compete. Plus we have shown interest in all of those players, especially Thiago, Di Maria, Strootman and Baines. {Ed004's Note - I would be happy with that but if Rooney goes we will need to replace him with a world class player thats plays in either behind the main striker or out wide left as Kagawa can cover either of those positions imo}

We are not City or Chelsea but if we continue to buy inferior players to them then we will start to finish behind them.

Surely it is obvious from the purchase of RVP last season what you get if you buy quality? If we, Manchester United start buying lesser players our standards WILL drop. We can't compete in Europe as it is.
I am strenuously ambitious yet many on here seem willing to accept the ordinary and this may be because they have finally been brainwashed that we should accept our owners for what they are and the lack of investment to match the top teams in Europe.
Lets see what happens but I give my opinions on players because I want our great club to succeed and not start to fall behind like Liverpool did.

Why weren't we in to sign Torres when Chelsea showed such ambition to sign him from Liverpool? We could have got him realistically! Liverpool would have sold him to us.

Why weren't we in for Fabregas when he moved from Arsenal to Barcelona? Even though he clearly wanted to leave only for Barcelona we should have had a realistic chance of signing him.

Both these past instances show our lack of ambition. The Glazer penny pinching has cost us dearly.

Why are Bayern being so aggressive and buying their nearest competitors best players?

At the same time you and others think it is ok to aim low, its ok to accept our owners don't have to spend the ever growing commercial income, why? What is that massively increased income to be used for? if we don't have the team then you can be sure income will fall and even SAF mentioned that I recall. RVP and DDG are both excellent players but there is a level above that and we need one, there is a reason we haven't been as good since 2008 and it is pretty obvious, any thoughts?

Red Man

Agree0 Disagree0

I would love it if you first answer how we were supposed to sign Liverpool's best player and sign Cesc who only wanted Barcelona. You have moaned and moaned about these being signs of lack of ambition which is simply not true.

1. Why have Dortmund been successful in Europe without spending big?

We have lost out in Europe because of sticking to the 4-4-2 for years when we should have changed tactics. We had a more than good enough side many a times. We outplayed Real Madrid's big names this year and were unlucky. The Rafael red card against Bayern was unlucky. Luck plays a big factor in Europe.

2. Because a lot of players will leave Bayern as well. Ribery, Robben, Gomez and a few others are likely to leave as Pep plans to change the style of play. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that.

3. If you think just going for big names is the way forward I feel sorry for you. Chelsea spent the whole of last year chasing after Cavani, ended up not getting him and paid the price for sticking with Torres, when they could have given Lukaku gametime and could have done a lot better.

Madrid have the exact transfer policy you dream about, the exact manager you crave so badly yet have failed in Europe for years now while Manchester United have reached three finals and won one.

We have spent significant sums in the past 2 summers. Kagawa, RVP, Jones, De Gea were all top quality signings. Powell and Zaha are both excellent youngsters.

Manchester United has never had a Galactico policy like Real Madrid which you seem to be expecting.

Bayern didn't get to this stage by buying big in one summer. They consistently bought 2-3 players every year, gradually developed the team and integrated it with the ones from the academy. That is exactly what United are doing.

Tell me how many self sufficient clubs are interested in signing Ronaldo. Are Bayern? Are Juve?

The increase in revenue has gone into freezing ticket prices and the ever inflating wage bill.

Awaiting your response, especially for the first para.

REDFAITH

Agree0 Disagree0

The european 'failure' point is very muddy water, if it wasnt for the fact that we had to play arguably the best club side of all time in 2 finals that we lost we could well be on 5 cl titles.

as regards the buying big name players, you have to ask if we need those types, of course we'd love to see Ronaldo back but surely we'd be wiser to spend his value on Strootman, Thiago, Baines & Di Maria?!

I strongly championed the purchase of Torres from Athletico Madrid when we sat back and let the scousers buy him for £25m, was I wrong? I also felt Bale was a good purchase several years ago was that wrong? Fabregas was another several years ago. The thing is some clubs make it happen some don't, Figo was transferred Goetze recently to clubs of great competitors. There was a time we did that Rio for example now we don't, interesting to hear why you think we don't? Bet it isn't the Glazers is it?

I don't want a Galacticos policy but the purchase this summer of two top quality players and it the definition of that quality that is at stake. We have a huge squad with a first team that is short on quality in several areas. SAF drove us to the league last season but this coming one our main competitors will not stand still and if we don't have top quality additions in our weak areas they will be in front of us at home and in Europe

We should be putting pressure on our owners with our expectations instead of appeasing them and if ever there was a summer to spend big it is this one because Moyes needs the quality

Red Man Torres turned down half of europe as he wanted Liverpool and only Liverpoo. Maybe we spoke to his agent and learned that. Just because stuff isn't public doesn't mean it doesn't happen. We tried for Fabregas as 17 he turned us down for Arsenal as he fancied London over Manchester. Bale turned us down for Spurs as he felt he had more chance of first team football, this is widely known. You can't just chuck cash at people till they give in if they just don't want to know. The failure in europe is down to tactics, largely down to a poor assistant manager, bad luck and ref decisions and running into messi-lona in two finals. If we had reached the other finals where they weren't involved most likely we would have won. I agree we need quality but you seem a little fixated with fabregas. You also seem dismissive of players like strootman just because he plays in holland. Seems a bit rash to me. We have to give Moyes a chance and see what he does. Thirty days till the window opens. Its still silly season at the moment. MrE

Agree0 Disagree0

Jones, RVP, Kagawa and De Gea I would class as pretty big signings for top talent no? I do agree we should have signed more or do I? Personally I think being judgemental a lot of it is a case of we haven't spent particularly well the last 4/5 years and have paid fairly big money on very average players such as Ashley Young, good but not brilliant replacements like Valencia and a few dissapointing players for consistency longer term: Hargreaves, Anderson, Nani.

We were really unlucky with Hargreaves. He was class. The investment in Nani and Anderson was over 40mil and it has not been justified sadly. I still can't understand why Sir Alex spent that much on Young. Just a waste of a squad place imo. That is over 60mil worth of players that have not worked out as hoped. Add 30mil Berbatov, Hargreaves and the ridiculous amount spent on Bebe and it almost amounts to 80mil worth of "not worked out" signings.

We should have been "wiser" while buying imo. Although Nani and Anderson did show excellent potential in their first season and Nani and Berba did carry us for a while when Rooney had his time in the limelight for the wrong reasons.

@Red Man

I clearly remember you wanting Torres from Liverpool and Fabregas when he went to Barca and cited that as our supposed lack of ambition. That is what I am referring to. And yes you were wrong to want Torres then because we won the league anyway by playing a different system than one in which Torres flourishes. We added Tevez to that next summer. We were trying to get away from the system of depending on Van Nistelrooy whom we would have replaced with Torres and rather switched to a more fluid interchanging front 3. I have always had doubts over Torres' ability to play with another striker and play in various other formations and it has been justified.

You clearly want the Galacticos policy, at least be honest enough to admit it. I want top quality players too but where you and me differ is where you cite unrealistic targets like Torres, Fabregas, Ronaldo and us not signing them as lack of ambition whereas I can see the club's ambition in buying two top players every summer. Ronaldo is simply a pipe dream for any self sufficient club, get over it.

Fabregas, if he WANTS to leave will have many other clubs chasing him and if he goes somewhere else then I will agree with you that we have a lack of ambition and missed out. BUT if he stays at Barcelona it is clear he had no intention on moving clubs.

We should be putting pressure on our owners to deliver targets that will improve the team, not chase your wet dreams of Ronaldo, Schweisteiger, Torres from liverpool and Fabregas who clearly wanted a move to only Barcelona. I believe they have delivered in the last couple of summers and if we sign Thiago, Strootman, Di Maria and Baines we would be a much stronger team, ready to challenge for European Glory. That is ambition, not a Galactico.

Moyes will do just fine with those.
