F**k me, yer man Bale has me on the edge of my seat. Love watching him.

StevieK {Ed007's Note - Is that comfortable, I get cramp when I do that with Ed002....}

Believable4 Unbelievable0

: ) I must be getting old Ed. I didn't see any possible double meaning in that sentence when I wrote it - now it just seems very, very sordid. Thanks for that.

StevieK

Agree0 Disagree0

Haha good one Ed007!

All jokes aside though Bale is a class act. That wasn't even a particularly stand out performance for him, he does it regularly. And I think he's shown he's more than a one tick pony, as many on here labelled him. Still young too! He's not as good and is unlikely to ever be, but he does have a bit of the Cristiano about him, with his pace, power and mean shooting technique.

Doubt he'll ever join United as he'll be very expensve IMO but he would be a huge improvement on our current wigers (form wise). Will go on to be a really top player IMO.

Gav

Agree7 Disagree0

I think the main gripe most had was about his inconsistancy by he has really ironed that out allot and become a great performer regularly.

I agree Gav I do not envisage him here through price alone.

Eds how come when I write tv on a post when the post it becomes tv? Is this some sort of advertising thing? {Ed007's Note - Yes we like to advertise tv, it looks like it is working.}

I've noticed for a while now a lot of posters on this site are calling for a strootman or a wanyama to be signed but how many of you have actually watched them play, by that I mean week in week out. I agree we need someone of the keane mould but then he was an exceptional talent and though I read good things about both the mentioned players I am not sure they are the players we will eventually go for, especially wanyama as he would get called up for african nations and fergie has never signed a player he could lose during the season for a cup competition he has no care for. Strootman on the other hand if and that's a big IF is as good as many of you say then i'm sure he'll be on fergie's radar but only if his personality fits with the squad as a whole.

nelly

Believable4 Unbelievable1

Wanyama is Kenyan, they've only qualified for ACN a few times and they go out in the early rounds so I don't think that the ACN will be a major factor

An out and out striker means the "complete" striker, the "absolute" striker, the "perfect" striker.

I never said that if you play with one striker he is not an out and out striker, of course a lone striker is an out and out striker, what I am saying is an out and out striker is not necessarily a lone striker because you can have more than one out and out striker playing in one game. IE a 4-4-2.

Rooney has played many times as an out and out striker, not just in 2009/10. He has played alongside Saha & RvN as an out and out striker, alongside Tevez. Rooney has played as an out and out striker for most of his career, he just played that was consistently all through the 2009/10 season.

Sydney!

Syd what the hell are you talking about pal
Jred

Believable5 Unbelievable4

Just seen your post further down I agree leave it at that
jred

Agree2 Disagree0

Why are you cutting and pasting it? Like I said earlier I am bored with this convo. It's a pointless discussion.

Sydney!

Agree1 Disagree2

Out and out striker is a fairly subjective term. I would class an out and out striker as a goalscorer, someone who doesn't drop deep like Rooney but someone who plays purely in and around the box. RVN was an out and out striker to me, Andy Cole was. IMO Rooney doesn't play that role often enough and I certainly wouldn't say he has played there most of his career so far.

TK-Red

Agree3 Disagree1

03 Feb 2013 22:11:54
U can have 2 out an out forwards altho rare in todays game. Rooney played as an out an out forward regluary in his early career. He often played next to Ruud, he played next to Dimi or ahead of him aswell. UTID

Agree2 Disagree0

My point was Rooney has played as an out and out striker plenty of times in his career, not just the 2009/10 season. In 2009/10 he did consistently play there that season, but he has played as an out and out striker 100's of times. Every time we played a 4-4-2 Rooney was one of two out and out strikers. But like I said this convo is pointless. I think he was moved to the hole permanently due to him showing signs of slowing down, you disagree, let's leave it at that shall we? Pal ;)

Sydney!

Agree4 Disagree4

TK, I was wrong by saying most of his career, my original point was that he has played as an out and out striker more than just 2009/10, although agreed that that was the season he played there consistently. I think he has moved permanently into the hole due to him slowing down somewhat. That's just my opinion mind. He has often played as a second striker, but he is much deeper nowadays.

Anyway I am knackered, nighty night.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree2

Syd is a train in reverse. . . Back tracking. . . IMO Rooney is not an out an out striker an never has being. . But hey let's leave it at that.

CAIN

I've been reading the recent posts and of course there is a lot of emphasis on Ken's goal and the part played in it by Pepe Reina. You draw comparisons with 'odd' slips with De Gea and suggest he gets harsh treatment because of HIS lapses. Furthermore I see many, many posts on here saying De Gea is good/going to be great etc etc. BUT. signs are that Begovic is coming to you in the summer. Do you think he is coming because he wants to be a back-up keeper?

Puzzled

Believable3 Unbelievable1

I think Begovic is moving this summer for definite but whether or not he comes to us will depend on DDG's last few months of this season. I think he is on a time frame for some big improvements and if SAF doesn't see what he wants to there will be some movement for Begovic as a replacement.

It's funny how many on here label Linders as one of the best back ups and have the audacity to think a top keeper like begovic would be happy coming in to be DDG's understudy. Makes me laugh.

Jono

Agree4 Disagree4

Begovic a top keeper? LMAO Decent nothing more. Keep DDG and we won't be disappointed.

G. A. G. U. S

Agree9 Disagree4

G. A. G. U. S.

Do you seriously not rate Begovic as a top keeper? I know you have a soft spot for DDG but hopefully that's not clouding your vision mate.

There was only a couple of truely world class saves/ maybe only one this weekend and IMO he did it.

he has a better all round game ATM than DDG and far mor suited to the EPL in style.

Jono

Agree2 Disagree2

Begovic is a very good keeper but will never be world class imo, his distribution is terrible. His communication is good and he is decent at commanding his area, but not as good as you'd expect from someone which such an imposing frame. He's a good shot stopper, but will never get to DDG current level of shot stopping ability.

If we replaced DDG with Begovic I would be dissapointed, he is only currently slightly better than DDG, but I truely believe that in three years time DDG will be at a level Begovic will never be able to reach. The only Keeper that I feel would actually be an improvement on DDG both short term and long term is Rene Adler, who before his injury in 2010 was better than Neuer, and this season has shown that he still. is better than Neuer imo.

Shappy

Agree6 Disagree0

Jono, the save from ruiz by de gea was better than anything begovic did this last weekend, begovics were great saves but the shot de gea tipped onto the post was unbelieveable, so unbelieveable most people failed to notice he had saved it, suprise suprise.

phil

Agree3 Disagree0

Shapps

I can agree that there is scope in potential for DDG to be better than begovic but there is also the fact Begovic is better now. I think winning the league will probably buy more time for DDG as there will be the opinion he will improve again next year and we won it with him this year. As I said though SAF will be looking for improvements in the areas needed not highlighting what we know he is already good at.

We need a keeper that's good to great in all areas not top drawer in 1 or 2 and weak in the others. It's funny how o e keeper messes up a cross it's highlighted DDG would be slated, another palms a shot out, DDG would be slated, another doesn't cannabis well in a sittuation, DDG would be slated.

The point there is these keepers are messing up in one area where DDG has questions in all the areas. There is no point highlighting DDG great saves as shot stopping has never been in question it's the improvements in the weak areas that needs to happen or we will have a weakness for his entire career with us.

I agree IMO Adler was always the best choice plus being a UTD fan would have that extra willingness to go the extra mile for us but there are many keepers that have better overall attributes than DDG now and it's a possibility letting DDG go would backfire but in Spain there is no need for the same attributes so IMO we would never find out really.

Phil

I agree the Ruiz save was brilliant but the Riise one was hardly world class was it?

Jono

Agree0 Disagree0

No I agree it wasnt world class it was a standard save any keeper should make, who said it was world class?

phil

Agree0 Disagree0

Jono

I feel your viewpoint of picking out DDG's mistakes has become paper thin in recent weeks with other keeper's making more high profile errors. Hart, Reina, Scezney, even Begovic. Czech has looked good recently but even he parried a save straight at him back towards a striker in the Newcastle game.

You seem to be looking for things to say about DDG. Part of the truth IMO is that the balls move with so much pace and movement these days that keepers are made to look more silly. I've seen most of the top keepers parry a shot out to a striker in recent weeks. When the balls move in the air sometimes all you can do it stop it from going on.

With regards your comment to Phil - I'm not sure he said the save against Riise was world class? I may be missing something. The one agaist Ruiz was immense and couldn't believe what I saw at the time.

DDG is not as 'commanding' or as strong in aerial positions as he should be - fair enough. But his distribution and shot stopping are as good as we could hope for. So there are pro's and con's. He is still very young and will improve, no doubt.

I've named most of the other top keepers in the EPL who have equally made mistakes this season. Crucially I don't think DDG has cost us many points this season, if any. So it's not exactly something I'm losing sleep about!

You keep mentioning Adler. I can't comment because I don't see him play enough. But the point here is DDG plays for us and Addler does not. We are not going to replace one of our players every time someone plays better in the same position. Similarly, I find it strange that you admit DDG may go on to be better than Begovic but would still like to swap them.

Haven't we built a history of proding great players and giving talented youngsters a chance?

I think you overplay DDG's 'mistakes' and skim over his strengths and things he does well.

Jono,

Looking forward to your expert assessment of the performances of the 'best in the world' Hart and the 'better than DDG' Reina. Or are they spared criticism because they, unlike DDG, do not keep "Linders" on the bench where he belongs?

Believable8 Unbelievable3

No Name

My expert analysis would highlight that Reina had an absolute howler against Aguero and could do nothing with Dzeko goal. Hart could have got down quicker to Sturridges but if he got a hand to it I think It would still go in as it was a rocket, Gerrard's was inch perfect.

Oh and I have never said Reina is better than DDG OR Harts the best in the world for your information.

well said chris the REDman, I believe you have got some sort of prophetic insight or something, or you have just got, good common sense, as everyone can see liverpool are improving under br, and so the tide starts to turn. lfc

Agree2 Disagree3

If they can sneak into 4th this season and get future champions league money, then it's possible.

Agree1 Disagree4

They won't sneak into 4th, too many in front of them, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, not this year.

Agree4 Disagree0

Or if man utd, city, chelsea, spurs, everton, arsenal sell all there best players and liverpool all of a sudden stop wasting money and useless squad players at best, then maybe just maybe liverpool, newcastle and swansea have a chance ooooohhhhh it would so dramatic wouldn't it, it all them radios pinned to ears in mersey side, tyneside and south wales.
Chris the REDman

Agree4 Disagree0

Liverpool will finish a minimum of 15 points off 4th spot. Spurs are too far ahead of them and would be much much stronger with a top striker. Then there is Arsenal who can put a run of 6/7 wins together, Everton who finish the season strong. Liverpool will do well to keep hold of Suarez past this season and Sturridge will dwindle back into mediocrity once the novelty wares off for him.

Sydney!

Agree5 Disagree1

Newcastle will be stronger next season too. I see them signing a striker but that will be it. They will keep Cabaye and they are already coping without Tiote.

I have to say many were critical when City signed Garcia for an initial £16m and wondered why we never rivaled a bid. All I can say is well done for not making a bid. He is very slow and quite frankly average in our league.

Sydney!

It's his first season not sure he has been much worse than kags
I think they will both do better next year

Syd i'm guessing that's exactly what the scout report said. I think City signed him more out of desperation than anything. Pretty bad summer of transfers from them. MrE

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred, the difference is Kagawa needed to adapt to the EPL physically, Garcia is already a big strong lad.

Sydney!

Agree4 Disagree2

Syd
It's not just the physical side of the game it's the speed and energy
Jred

Agree2 Disagree2

My point regarding Garcia was his speed. He is very slow and he needs to commit a cynical foul every game due to the opposition player leaving him for dust. He will not get any faster, all he can do is adapt his game by improving his positional awareness. I think Carrick's positional awareness is superb and has to be because he is also very slow. If Garcia can sort his positional awareness out he could make up for having little speed. After watching him so far I am glad we never signed him, Strootman has both speed and positional awareness so for me he ticks both boxes and would be a great buy. Not seen much of Wanyama so cannot pass judgement on him. Who would you go for Jred?

Sydney!

Agree1 Disagree0

Syd
I may be the wrong person to ask as I wouldn't of been totally against signing Garcia.
I think both him and kags are good players and we will see that next year.
I think strootman is a better player at the moment but wanyama for me is really improving.
It's a hard call but I think I would maybe take a chance on wanyama if he keeps improving he could be v good.
At the moment I'm not sure either is a vast improvement on clevs or ando ( if he can stay fit )
Jred

Agree0 Disagree1

Kagawa has 2 goals and 4 assists in 13 games yes?

Compare that to David Silva, the equivalent player in our nearest rivals. 3 goals and 5 assists in 25 games.

So not bad for a newbie in his first season in a more physical league, especially one pushed out of position.

Agree3 Disagree0

I think Strootman is Carrick 2. 0, younger, faster, better technically, would be a great signing.

I'd have Wanyama as well mind. Get both for somewhere between 20-25 million quid, value for money? ;)

Agree2 Disagree1

That's my point Jred, even I wanted Javi Garcia before he signed, but not convinced by him at all this season.

I know Strootman is good, but if his agent is an issue then Wanyama wouldn't be a bad 2nd choice. He is only 21 still so can improve into an Essien. We would also have a CB by buying him too.

seen a few rumours on different sites over last week, most commomn names coming up (at moment) are

Bergovic (8 - 11million seems mentioned)
Wanyama (8 - 15million seems mentioned)
Modric (20 - 25million seems mentioned)

if (big if) these where true (fee's seem reasonable 36-51 million - some of costs i. e fees' / wages off set by sales and retirments) would fellow fans be happy, would it take us up another level (as Van Persie has done) and how would people see us lining up (not forgetting Zaha of course)

Re the latest Cleverley debate. He may be a good squad player but that's not what we need right now, we need a top class midfielder who can grab games by the scruff of the neck. It's not Cleverley's fault he is expected to play that role, we all believe SAF has neglected the centre for too long and focused on other areas. Let's stop expecting a good squad player to be the answer.

AJH

Believable1 Unbelievable6

Who has said he is the answer and suggested he is anything more than being a sqaud player?
Chris the REDman

Agree3 Disagree0

I agree, people are judging him based on him being the saviour and our main midfield man. Cleverley would be a great squad player if we had a world class midfielder in there, it is totally unfair to slag him off like people seem to be.

We expect youth to be given a chance, people are saying Blackett should get a chance, if he isn't world class (which he won't be for a few years) the same people will then be saying to get rid of him. It's ridiculous.

GDS

Agree1 Disagree1

Chris the red man
go back 12 month and many were saying clevs was the answers and was going to be world-class and I think that's why he gets a hard time on this site, maybe the expectation was raised a little high.
Some of the stick he gets is due to previous arguments between some of the regulars
jred

Agree0 Disagree0

AJH, exactly my point. It's not Cleverley's fault we have not bought a midfielder or two. I think we need midfield acquisitions.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

AJH

I think they both have a point (KLOOt and Syd!) so this too and fro could continue until we sign 2 top CMers.

Syd's correct in that he should be given a chance and has hardly put a foot wrong, KLOOTs right in that he has not set the world alight and we don't need him as a 1st team starter right now.

IMO he will fill the role of the squad player and hopefully will be happy to remain so. A solid if unspectacular option from the bench would be all I expect from him in the future. If he betters himself and exceeds my expectations then all the better for the team but NOT at the expense of a couple of top CMers.

Jono

Agree0 Disagree0

Ohh I see in that case I agree he does seem to get an awful amount of stick for a sqaud player.
Chris the REDman

Agree0 Disagree0

Jono, anyone who thought he would come in on his debut season for club and country and set the world alight are fools. let's not forget that he was a winger up until the beginning of last season. Not bad going seems he went from a winger to a central midfielder due to us missing out on Nasri and Sneijder. I would say hr has done a decent job. The only reason RFT doesn't like Cleverley is because of the brand issue.

Sydney!

Agree3 Disagree0

Feels like everyone is jumping too soon to give an opinion on him.
I think he will be a great player for us.

Agree1 Disagree2

I agree with the point that Clev gets more flack than he deserves because we haven't addressed our CM with new signings (not his fault). Some people expect too much as he's getting plenty of game time. I am convinced that SAF is giving him a full season's chance to impress before buying that CM in the summer. Much like with Welbeck last season, then we bought RVP in the summer. Cleverly deserves this chance given the years he's put in at the academy and on loan. I assume he will be more of a squad player next season but that could change as I beilieve he will improve over the next 2 yrs.

I would hate to be a Liverpool fan but today must be so confusing for the poor little buggers, pray for a win and do Manchester United a big favour or lose keeping City's title chances alive.

I think today will truly show the Liverpool fans ambitions.

As much as I hate Liverpool I had always respected them as a club and recognise them along side us as the two biggest teams in England but I lost all respect for their fans the day they celebrated losing to Blackburn on the last day of the season resulting on us not winning the title. I believe their reputation as a great club was lost that day they celebrated a defeat because a clubs success is built on their fans support.

If they're are to ever challenge again, they need that selfish winning mentality back, can they begin to restore that today?

I think the 3 names in Brendan's envelope at the start of the season was lfc, puzzled and Blair! : )

Then Lewandowski and Hernandez up top game changers from the bench and both would get plenty of games, with very fast wingers as subs Young and Zaha}

Agree0 Disagree0

Would you sell Valencia and Nani ed? I would if it meant getting Lewandowski & Rodriguez.

Ed i'd go with wanyama and one of carrick or strootman partnered with him. I think strootman would be carricks long term replacement and lewandowski would be van persie's. But would both accept squad rotation for a few seasons? I think carrick, strootman, wanyama and cleverley would be enough options for a midfield two or three with kagawa further forward. {Ed004's Note - I don't rate Strootman highly thats why I always suggest Cabaye or even at a stretch Modric or Wilshere as an alternative to him.}

interesting ed as I don't rate cabaye all that highly. Have you seen much of strootman? Looks the real deal to me. Wilshire I don't get the hype and doubt we'd get him from arsenal, and modric had his chances, didn't exactly push for the move. {Ed004's Note - I rate Cabaye very highly and I think he'll play a vital role in Newcastle's survival and for France in their upcoming fixtures. Haven't seen much of Strootman but he doesn't seem to excel offensively or defensively, his passing isn't world class and he seems a very slow player. Wilshere is excellent as is Modric top class midfielders there}

Agree0 Disagree0

In your opinion ed do you think there is such a player who is younger quicker and better on the ball than rooney who is obtainable? I don't think there is

Anon {Ed004's Note - Gotze... He has added goals to his game, he is just as hard a worker as Rooney and I've went out of my way to watch Gotze this season. Watched him vs Wolsburg I think, and near the dying moments of the game with Dortmund behind you have Gotze sprinting past his defense to tackle an opposition player, he is a humble player, he is very quick, improving a lot recently, he is very quick, his passing is better or at least as good as Rooneys and he is one for the future who can play in a variety of positions. Also Ed002 has said in the past united have shown some interest in him}

Agree0 Disagree0

Don't Dortmund want silly money for him though? Understandbly so

Anon {Ed004's Note - He's playing quite well at the minute. He keeps the ball so well}

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed I have to disagree about Strootman. If you compare him to Bender, he has got just as much pace, better passing, better shooting, and is just as efficient defensivly. The only thing Bender is better at is dribbling. So I would rate them on a similar level. And considering how much Strootman has improved in the last 2 seasons, think he will go on to become a better player.

As for Cabaye, I rate him quite highly. He is better than Cleverley by a mile, and is not far behind Modric in terms of class. But the fact remains, if we want to buy him, we will be paying over 20 mil pounds.

And imo we only need one midfielder atm, with Petrucci playing quite well on loan, while Tunicliffe only needs some experience. And atm, Carrick is unexpendable, so we need a permanent partner for him. SO Strootman ( or Bender ) doing the box to box role, with one of Cleverley and Anderson in a midfield 3, with an attack of Rooney, Kagawa and RVP up top is a frightening team. And we won't be needing wingers because the quality of our midfield will allow fullbacks to attack more freely.

Mick {Ed004's Note - Well I hope we play a 4231 so I think we need a playmaker beside Carrick anyways.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Anon

Goetze is better than Rooney in terms of passing and has much more pace even when compared to rooney's peak. Completely different player and technically a much better player but not a natural goal scorer like rooney. He will not come and dortmund will not sell him.

03 Feb 2013 13:19:49
hey gents,
Well I must say I was very pleased with yesterdays result, our work rate is top notch with even our forwards coming back to help with defensive dutys.
Ok so Fulham came on to us in the last 10 mins, its the prem that happens, I see kloot again going on about how we ''let Fulham come on to us'' for me its a case of the losing team pushing everything forward trying to get a goal, there not exactly a bog standard team, there a seasoned prem team so to say we let them come onto us I dnt think is the case.
I was very happy in how we defended and refused to be budged, the whole game had that feeling of a defining match and we came through it, you will never see us have that many chances again and only score 1 for a very long time.
Also I see kloot hasn't got rooney to hammer so 'the brand' gets it agin, ok so he wasn't as his best last night! Every player has off games mate, and to be fair to syd he has never come out and said he is the midfielder we are missing, he has just said that with wot we have he is the only consistent forward midfielder that can keep the ball moving with one touch passes and is ALWAYS willing to receive the ball under any pressure, sure I think we would all like a jack wilshire ozil or inesta but atm we have clevs and to always be down on a player is (for me) a bit harsh.
DDG made some very good saves but how funny is it that one of his saves he palmed out in front of himself but Evans I think was awake and simply cleared the ball and now people in the media and on here are saying it was 1 of his worldclass saves he made, for me this guy is a worldclass keeper at pretty much everything except crosses in the box which i'm sure he can and will get better at he just needs time.
Valencia has now I think played himself into the reserves for a while, he was just poor again (we want our toni back!) and maybe needs a few 'less competitive' games to find his form, you know its bad when he is being taken off and NANI is staying on when we are needing a goal, if there is ever a wake up call for him its that!
Rooney had amazing game and showed 90 mins of why he is still thought very highly of buy most on here, his work rate and coolness is so vital to us when he's on form and will be missed when he's gone and I hope its not so soon!
Evra again is showing he is now as dangerous in the other box as he is in ours lol 5 assists this season I think for us and prob nearly as many against us aswel, but at least he is balancing them out now I suppose lol. I dnt think fabio will come back to replace maybe stand in for evra when he is needed but I think he might be more suited to RB and push rafa for a spot if he can.
I see puzzled is now coming here now we are ten points clear and congratulating us on another title (bit early if you ask me) but the excuse now is the league is not as strong and he might have a point ( I know : S ) but that really says more about them than it does us if you ask me lol I mean if the league is so poor and liverpool are still struggling to get above mid table that's shocking if you ask me and if take into account they have spent nearly 200m to get there lol that's sad no matter how you look at it, anyway when we play madrid that will be the real test to see where we are and if we come through that ill take great pleasure in shoving it down his throat!

So all in all our '1 man team' showed how together they are and why we deserve to be top, that ball out of the back by rvp to rvp at LB then his chip over the top too rvp and rvp's run to draw senderos to the ball allowing rvp to run onto the pass and finish with class that rvp has, it showed we never stop and are willing to fight all the way to our goals.

Chris the REDman {Ed004's Note - Haven't really had time to comment on the game yesterday yet but I thought it was a good performance by the team, granted it was not our best but with a bit more luck there would have been plenty more goals. Firstly was watching QPR yesterday and Fabio had a top game at right back for QPR there was one stage he showed outstanding skill to flick a ball over an opponents head and was unlucky the run ended, he is still a bit rash but much like Rafael he will hopefully mature. Secondly I think some of the treatment shown to Cleverley is a bit harsh, reminds me off the abuse Evans, Fletcher etc used to get and is identical to the abuse Carrick got. Now don't get me wrong I don't think he is the answer to our midfield problems and would still sign a midfielder or two in the summer someone like Wanyama/Bender and Cabaye, along with Cleverley, Carrick and Anderson would be great options. United have always played their best football with Carrick and Cleverley in midfield this season as Cleverley does a lot of unseen work much like Carrick used to do but is now getting recognition for. You watch when Carrick gets the ball 7 times out of 10 Cleverley is there offering himself for a pass so Carrick can make a better angle for the pass forward or Cleverley can play it forward, at time this season he has been vital in how we play so I feel the least we can do is show him a bit of respect for his hard work on the pitch. We all want to see youth promoted and when they are they get torn to shreds.}

i think this summer will see a big clear out at united. Keeper wise both lindegaard and amos will depart. Lindegaard isn't good enough for the premier league and certainly not for europe. Amos will be a good championship keeper but needs to leave to play. Johnstone will replace amos. Begovic will replace lindegaard. And who knows maybe eventually de gea if bids come in from spain although I expect de gea has earned himself next season at united. Defensively not much will happen. I think rio will get a new contract to keep his experience and presence in the dressing room but next season will be his last and he'll be phased out for smalling. Hopefully vidic can stay injury free to hold off on replacement for a couple of years. Full back is the most tricky. We could do with proper cover at right back rather than drafting in centrebacks. This is where fabio comes in. At left back a lot depends on evra. Does he stay or go? If he goes then baines is the only replacement and blackett for long term. If evra stays then fabio and buttner will cover. Midfield will see the most change. Scholes and fletcher to retire and anderson to possibly be sold. In comes wanyama and strootman whether or not anderson stays or goes. We need more and better options. Not much will happen upfront. Maybe lewandowski in.

i think city winning the league last season actually did us a favour. Controversial I know. But it forced us to go sign a proven would class talent in robin van persie rather than the usual youngsters with potential we've had for the last few years. Look at the difference its made. Also I think the hunger had gone in a few players, looking at some of the displays last season. But look at the hurt in the team at the end of the sunderland game. The pain of losing on goal difference. I think some players had gotten complacent about winning. Ferguson has used last season and its re-ignited that hunger in them. You can see it in certain of the older players where it was missing last season. Lastly I think winning the league hurt city. Firstly having won the league title it stalled their development as a team. I think certain of their players have fallen into the trap some of uniteds were in last season. They've become complacent about winning. Doing it once has sated the hunger and mancini isn't a good enough manager to fire them up again. Look at how they've played so far this season compared to last season. And winning the title had a knock on to the summer transfer window. Whereas united with the pain of losing signed van persie city didn't do so well in the window. They didn't strengthen or look to plug possible weak points. Their signings frankly were largely poor ones and have proven it so far. Whereas if they hadn't have won the league I suspect they'd have spent large to try and win it this year. Instead complacency set in at a top level. However the worrying thing is that their will be that reaction this summer and they'll have a big window that we need to match. Not in terms of spend, we couldn't manage that but in terms of quality. Get the right signings in. And that means midfield. Thanks for reading, I hope that makes sense and some of you agree. MrE

Fulham were never going to roll over like they did at OT last week, but we still hit the post 3 times and Shwazer was the busier of the two keepers all game. How can anybody slag of our players. Jonny Evans getting grief, you knoe there is more to football than MOTD or FiFA. Remember with 13 games to go we have a lead and our players will have learnt something from last years gut wrenching experience last season. Get behind the team and support them, changing for the sake of changing never brings improvement. Just look at Chelsea's dramatic fall from grace.

I have been busy all night drinking several ciders in several pubs, but I will reply to your inaccurate and tedious Cleverley hating post. If you watch the game again you will see that Cleverley done nothing wrong in the whole match. He spread the ball around well and only lost possession once. Almost every pass was forward. As for creating chances, wasn't it him who created the chance for Rooney to hit the post?

Not at all, I don't agree with the vast majority of what RFt says but for once I think he has made a valid point.
I also agree with GDS, RFT has done that joke to death.

But to be fair syd if you look at your comments down the page you have probably proved RFT right

For the record I though clevs done ok in the first half but was poor in the second.
I'm also not sure if the Carrick clevs partnership is going to be good enough
Jred

Agree0 Disagree1

Rodio17, the position where Cleverley plays doesn't usually produce extraordinary incidents. It's an area on the pitch that rarely excites. Yet he has scored four goals this season so far and keeps being picked by the manager. This is his first proper season as a United and England player, I think he should be given time to succeed. If he only turns out to be a great squad player then so be it, but he has done everything right to get to where he is today so deserves his chance.

People call him a "tidy player" or a "neat player", but isn't that what the game is all about? Keeping possession?

Sydney!

Agree4 Disagree0

Jred, what valid point is that then?

That Cleverley didn't create any chances? Because he did.

When Cleverley is given a more advanced role he creates plenty and scores too. He is our 4th highest scorer. Yesterday he played deeper which may not be his best position agreed, but to be fair he rarely makes a mistake and keeps possession so I fail to see what more anyone expects from him?

Sydney!

Agree3 Disagree0

Lets get this straight We desperately need a midfielder and Cleverley is not the answer and never will be. Yes he will drift through a couple of seasons with us until we get better but he is just not good enough. Now Sydney can winge about it and the puppet can get all bitchy just incase I mention his employers but most of you know exactly what I mean he is not the answer to United's problems in midfield end of. I AM KLOOT {Ed004's Note - I think most agree he is not the answer but he still a very good squad player to have. Won't mind being a sub, unlikely to ever kick up a fuss, does a good job when called upon and works extremely hard. Every successful team needs players like Cleverley, Fletcher, O'Shea etc}

Agree0 Disagree3

Exactly my point Ed004, he may end up being a good squad player and nothing more, but he is already a decent midfielder and he will only get better with more games at the club.

This is a player who has been at the club since he was 12, he came up through the ranks and was very highly thought of by the United staff. He played for the academy, reserves and then went out on his loans. While on loan he had two bad injuries which slowed down his progress by a couple of years and last season when he finally got his chance he started very well until Davies derailed his season. This season he has played in the Olympics. He is in his first proper season as a United and England player and has been a success this season.

I fail to see how he can be criticised? It seems he is the scapegoat for United fans being upset about no midfielder being signed. Pretty sad really.

Agree0 Disagree0

No name
I don't think the clevs Carrick partnership is good enough, I would argue that we are top of the league despite our issues with cm not due to our CM
I think both are good players but a bit similar in that neither player really hurts the opposition and they both do a similar job. I think a good partnership has a bit of everything.
United's goal is to be the best in Europe and imo we will need a better cm pairing to achieve that
jred

Agree0 Disagree0

Syd
The debate on clevs has been going on for a while, in the summer you thought he could be world-class and that next year we would build our team around him.
I disagreed then and I still do, clevs is a good player and I think will do well at United but imo will never be great, but there is nothing the matter with that.
Jred

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred, I have never said Cleverley will be world-class. Not ever.

I also never said we will build a team around him, I said we will build our midfield around him. I still think that is possible. I see him being around for a very long time, playing at least 40 games a season.

Sydney!

I think you did say he could be world-class to be honest, but what ever

I also don't think clevs is good enough to build our midfield around never mind our team
jred

Agree3 Disagree0

Like I said I never said either. I said he has the potential to be world-class, whether he gets there remains to be seen and I have my doubts, but it's still very much in his hands. I have been critical about his forward play on occasions. I think he takes the easy option too often, but I think it's down to lack of confidence. I think he will be more offensive with more games under his belt. I don't think he is solely our answer to the midfield, but I think he is part of it. It's a squad game now and his style of play is what we have been missing. He will be part of the English spine that our squad will be built around. Like I said I see him playing many many games for us in the next few years. But I still want us to strengthen the midfield.

Jred

Believable12 Unbelievable1

Jred, I don't think Rooney will ever get back to his best, but even if he gets close to that he is still a world-class player IMO. He seems to be showing signs of adapting his game. His positional sense has been better and that is essential to a player who is showing signs of slowing down.

Sydney!

Agree7 Disagree6

Syd
I'm not really sure what your going on about Rooney always had more to his game than pace he's one of the very few players who can and does play numerous positions.
When he was young it wasn't his pace that made him a standard out player

I know you think different but for me he looks like he is returning from injury and starting to find his feet, he always plays better after a run of games.
Unfortunately due to injuries he hasn't really had that this year.

When do you think he was at his best because for me to score the goals he did last year in what I consider a poor United team was quite an achievement
Jred {Ed004's Note - My issue with Rooney and with others is that it appears his life style is beginning to catch up with him, he has lost a lot of pace, energy (which was vital in his game imo) and it doesn't seem to bother him. He can go only 2 ways from this moment in time. He can sort out his attitude and diet and regain form, fitness and maybe some speed or he can continue on this downward spiral}

Agree2 Disagree1

Jred, in 2009/10 season he was at his best IMO. He could beat a player 1on1 and score. He couldn't beat an egg now. That part of his game (loss of explosive speed) is gone due to age. Since he lost his pace he has been playing in the hole and he is showing signs of adapting his game. Still a world-class player, just not as deadly as he once was. That is why I believe we have seen the best of Rooney. I think he peaked young.

Sydney! {Ed004's Note - I agree, that's why I am unsure whether I'd like to see him replaced now when we can get a premium price and sign someone like Gotze who is equally as hard a worker of the ball, faster which benefits are counter attack, better at keeping the ball and more creative along with being able to score as he has been scoring on a regular basis this season I think he has more than 10 goals already in the Bundesliga. Now taken into consideration Nani will be sold, or more than likely will be. Rooney would cover probably atleast two forward signings along with the fee of Nani's aswell.}

Agree4 Disagree0

Edd as I've said many times before I think it's hard to judge his pace and fitness untill he's had a good run of games with out an injury.
I'm not really sure he's lost any energy as he still covers an awful lot of ground.
When do you think the downward spiral started because as I have said I thought he done well last season
Jred {Ed004's Note - This season has been a very poor season for him but then he seems to have bad seasons every now and again, or bad half a seasons and then spring to life}

Agree0 Disagree0

Syd
The2009/2010 season is the only season he has ever played as an out and out striker
Your comment of "since he lost his pace he has been playing in the hole and he is showing signs of adapting his game " is miles of, he was playing in the hole for Everton I would say he's played most of his football there
Also as I said in 2009/2010 he played as an out and out striker and yet only managed as many goals as he scored last season ( when he played all other the park)
Jred

Agree0 Disagree0

Edd I would agree I think this has been his worse season but I would still expect him to finish with 20 plus goals
Jred

Agree0 Disagree0

Thats just the problem Jred. Rooney doesn't seem capable of getting a good run of games together due to his fitness and by a good run of games I don't mean 10-12. How many times must he be left out mid season so he can work on his fitness? Rooney hasn't had that pace and explosiveness for nearly 3 years now so I think its safe to say that it won't be coming back. Sure he might have a good run of goalscoring for 10 or so games like he is now but when he dips in form, he is awful.

TK-Red

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred, I'm sorry, but can you not see that Rooney has lost a lot of his pace? If you cannot see that then what's the point of this discussion?

Rooney has been an out and out striker for years. Berbatov played in the hole.

Sydney!

Agree1 Disagree0

I can't say I've noticed a huge loss of pace. Possibly a lack of focus and fitness and some questionable decisions off the field. Ed was right, we need to make a decision on if he is ever going to step up to be the player we all wanted him to be and if not.

AJH

Agree0 Disagree0

Syd
I haven't said he hasn't lost some pace although I wouldn't say he is slow.
I would also say that Rooney has only had one season as an out and out striker, I think most if not all United fans would agree with that. Every other season he has played a variety of roles.
For me in 2010 was the first time he played as a first striker and I think it may of been the first time he scored more than 20 goals
hes played far more games in the hole than a out an out striker.

Like I said your comment is rubbish as he played in the hole for Everton Rooney main attribute has always been his link play and the fact when he plays well the whole team does.

The fact you think Rooney has been playing as an out and out striker explains a lot
Jred

Agree4 Disagree2

I think you are getting mixed up between an 'out and out' striker and a 'lone' striker. 2009/10 season he played as a lone striker, in previous years and at times this year he has played as a front two, but mostly over the past few seasons he has played behind the main striker in the hole. You can have two out and out strikers playing at one time, 4-4-2, but you can only have one lone striker 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1.

Sydney!

Agree2 Disagree3

Recent years Hernandez, RvP & Welbeck have all played ahead of Rooney who has played in the hole, but drifted very deep into midfield for the past few years, but for years Rooney played ahead of Berbatov who played in the hole. I have never seen Rooney play this deep for Everton or United before 2010.

Sydney!

Agree2 Disagree2

Lol
So if you play with 1 striker his not an out and out striker, ok pal
Rooney has played most of his career behind a striker apart from the 2010 season when he was our main striker "out and out" or " lone striker" or most forward player.

He played second striker or in the hole for Everton when we bought him he played behind Rvn and then saha he has always played deeper apart from 2010
So your statement of
"Since he lost his pace he has been playing in the hole and he is showing signs of adapting his game. " For me is rubbish
jred

Agree2 Disagree2

Syd
Our midfield has never been this bad so the need for him to play cm as he has done has never been there.
Rooney has always played deep he was criticized for it in the early days when we had roony and tevez he played out wide berd played many games as the main striker with Rooney playing off him.
Jred

Agree2 Disagree2

I just can't figure it out sometimes. certain players get slated no matter how well they play. This is my 2 bobs worth.

DDG was very steady yesterday. 2 world class saves in the opening 15 mins.

Evra. gets slated every game but has been immense this seasion with goals and assists. Do people not realise how much ground he covers bombing up and down that left wing. Bound to get caught out of position at times.

Valencia. very poor this season by his own standards.
Very few quality crosses delivered and not bombing past opposing players like he used to.

Nani. gets blamed for everything no matter what he does. Real witch hunt going on here. Can be frustrating at times but has the ability to tear teams to shreds. Was more effective than Valencia yesterday but still gets slated.

Cleverley. still have my doubts on this guy. Yet to see him reach the great heights that people think he will. Does not boss the midfield enough and not enough physical presence.

Carrick. just not my cup of tea. Too inclined to surrender midfield and drop back on the back four causing confusion. Loses the ball in dangerous areas and can't tackle. Not too bad when on the front foot
but very average when defending a lead.

Wellbeck. another guy just not United class. At times looks good but final product is rubbish. 1 goal in 19 games proves that. Can have some good link up play but unless he starts scoring I can see him leaving in the summer.

Rooney. world class end of. Works his socks off even when not playing so well but when on form just untouchable.
