Not sure if anyone has said the same but been thinking that Loftus Cheek is a Jose type player. Strong and technically sound. Would work well in rotation with the players we have now and he still has the potential to push on. Probably talking 40mill plus now but Jose isn't Herrera's biggest fan and he would command good money. Maybe a bit of amworld cup fever but he definately had a solid season.

Massive fan of his James and think he would be a great signing. Correct me if Iā€™m wrong but didnā€™t Jose give him his debut? If not, he seems a Jose type player and if he is going to leaving Chelsea I would like to see us be in for him.

Would have been a great option for our midfield. Someone who could actually start a game and play football, instead of coming on for ten minutes to scare the opposition, lose the ball and give away penalties.

Ed002, are we maxed out on our wages? I remember you saying FFP had a word with us about them being too high. We had until March to make them happy hence Zlatan leaving then.

Would one of our top earners have to leave to accommodate a potential incoming player who would demand similar wages?

Not Utd related but I just wanted to add my opinion to the England debate. I know it's easy to talk with the benefit of hindsight but I thought England we're fortunate last night and are lucky to find themselves in the last 16.

What I admired in the first couple of games was Southgate's bravery in deploying only one holding midfielder and allowing the freedom for Lingard, Ali and Sterling to interchange position's and run beyond Kane. All three possess excellent movement and are also very good technical players and we finally looked free of the rigid, static and ponderous football we've all become accustomed to watching England over the years.

Last night I was happy with the team selection and think we dominated the game without being outstanding. Columbia hardly threatened and I think for the most part we looked composed and in control. I thought Ali looked slightly off the pace after returning from injury and Sterling was on the periphery of the game like he has been for much of the tournament. The movement was good and we had got into some good attacking positions however we struggled at times with our final pass.

My main point in this, with the game delicately balanced going into the final 20 minutes I just think Southgate made the cardinal sin of trying to see the game out. His subs for the first time were negative and the introduction of Dier and Vardy impeded the team rather than helped it. Dier's distribution in midfield was poor and we started making sideways and backwards passes. The fluid, dynamic movement stopped and the familiar rigid, static England returned. Seemingly paralysed by fear and riddled with doubt Kane dropped dangerously deep to accommodate Vardy and this just encouraged us to play longer balls into the channels for Vardy to chase and surrender possession.

Loftus Cheek and Rashford had impacted and added fresh impetus against Tunisia and Southgate should have continued to be bold. Even the best teams are capable of conceding late goals when the stakes are high and margins fine but when Columbia equalised we had surrendered the initiative, lost our attacking intent and for the first period of extra time we could barely string two passes together and it looked like penalties would be our best option. To their credit we improved in the second period of extra time but not enough to win the game. By making defensive substitutions and changing the dynamic of the team when the equaliser arrived we simply weren't equipped for extra time and the game was always likely to be decided by the lottery of a penalty shootout.

I think if England are to progress and improve as a team not just in this tournament but moving forward Southgate must continue to be brave and play the type of football that has restored some national pride and reinvigorated the country. Now is the time to be bold, the whole country is behind this new young and exciting England team. Forget the ghosts of the past and blaze your own trail. Take control of your own destiny, be positive, recognise this opportunity and try not to leave it all on the lottery of another penalty shootout.

Believable11 Unbelievable0

04 Jul 2018 22:38:33
I said a similar thing last night that the substitutions were too negative. Colombia offered next to nothing going forward and bringing on rashford and Loftus Cheek would have finished them off. Especially with Mina limping with a groin injury.

However, if I am totally honest I donā€™t give a damn how we win, as long as we do. The feel good factor around this england team at the moment is something I have never experienced before. Donā€™t see why we cannot just enjoy it and bask in the hope that football will be coming home.

Agree2 Disagree0

04 Jul 2018 23:06:40
True mate, I think Southgate has been a fresh of breath air but last night I think he just fell into the trap of trying to see out a tight game against a team that had offered next to nothing. When they scored I didn't think we had much to offer in extra time and if he'd been more positive with his substitutions I think we would have beaten them in extra time or could even have scored a second before they equalised. Penalties are a stooge and I must admit I thought it was curtains. Having said that I've read we've been practicing hard and even employed psychologists so maybe he was comfortable letting the game drift towards penalties. It has always amazed me that previous managers have largely ignored the importance of penalties and done very little preparation. I'll accept the argument that you can't adequately recreate the pressure but if your confident in your technique and adopt the right mental approach then surely your chances of success are much higher. I'm glad he got his rewards and it's unlikely most teams will go far in the competition without having to win a penalty shootout. Roll on Saturday and what a great summer it's been enjoying the World Cup and fine weather whilst we wait for the real business to start come August plus it's a welcome distraction from all the tedious transfer patter.

Every summer the Ronaldo transfer speculation always hots up. This year I think there might be something in him leaving. If the ā‚¬100 million is an accurate price, in today's market it's not a lot for what you'd get.

He's adapted his game to be a pure machine in front of goal. Whatever front 3 we play they could interchange mid game. Get 2 years out of him, bring the premier league home and have a proper cracking at the champions league.

I can't see it happening but a man can dream!

04 Jul 2018 19:44:24
I do like Willian but is he going to be the difference between us catching City? We need another forward that can ad goals to our team, that's not Willian. He's very good on the ball but his final ball isn't great. He'd be a good addition but if Ronaldo is available it's a no brained!

Agree2 Disagree6

04 Jul 2018 19:51:07
Canā€™t pass up on Ronaldo at that price. Yes heā€™s 33 but he is like no other 33 year old. He has adapted his game and if we play him and Lukaku up top then we will challenge for the title. We surely cannot be letting Juve have a free run at him. Heā€™s not the same player he was a few seasons ago in terms of dribbling but he is an absolute goal machine. And scoring goals has been our problem for a number of seasons.

{Ed002's Note - Juventus have not, as of eight this evening, made any offer to Real Madrid for Ronaldo. They have however spoken with his representative, Jorge Mendes, about what it would take to get the player and whether or not he would be interested (given that there is aplan from Real Madrid to utilise him elsewhere in a transaction).

So would you get rid of Pogba and not use the money to buy Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and strengthen, but you would spend that money and a great deal more on a 33 year old with no residual value?}

04 Jul 2018 20:54:15

Just to add to England last night, my post was in jest even if it came across bitter.

Colombia was a disgrace I have to say but England wasn't whiter than white let's not smooth it over but end of the day I actually like watching England atm, seem together and United, not your fault you've an easier draw you can only beat what's in front of you and I fully expect you to reach the final. Agree2 Disagree3

04 Jul 2018 12:51:04
I'm not english but for the first time in decades you guys are fun to watch, finally you have a modern day manager who wants his players to feel comfortable in possession, you do lack a little more creativity in the middle of the park but the way this english team is playing is the right way to try to win international cups.

if only Shaw never got injured and continued with that very good form at the start of the season under Van Gaal i think you would have more chances because almost all of your attack comes from Trippier's side (whom i must say have been superb) .

But even if you don't win it i believe Southgate and his philosophy are right for england and if he gives your world champions youth a chance then you will be protagonist in the next 2, 3 world cups.

Reman - Maybe it's entertaining for the neutral, it sure does get the heart going as an England fan. But our actual performances have been pretty poor for me, we need to lift it a few gears if we expect to win the whole thing as the other nations in with a shout are all playing very competitive games.

Tunisia we were fortunate to win in the end, likewise with Colombia and obviously the Belgium game was not real. But Panama was a bit of a trick for the confidence, we didn't play that well as a team, we just punished them from set-plays and they were truly awful. We have created so little in open play, Kane has been anonymous aside from the goals, 3 pens, 1 deflection, and 2 poacher'esque goals and he will walk goldenboot, pretty crazy stuff.

I'm waiting for us to click, because yesterday was too negative. It's a lot like watching Utd at the minute to be honest, we know the tools are there, but the individuals aren't doing their stuff on the whole. Sterling, Lingard, Alli, Kane all were well below par yesterday. Walker and Young offered nothing as well. We can get away with a couple of players being off, but not half+ the team being below standard.

Agree2 Disagree10

I thought last night England hardly went at them at all after the first 15 mins. the south americans were very cynical but England stepped back and i thought we re very directionless for a lot of the game. Was it 2 shots between 2nd half and first period extra time?

Maybe they will now push on but I can see them just as easily going out than going through.

Agree2 Disagree0

04 Jul 2018 13:57:20

I genuinely have no idea why you watch football.

Kane was far from anonymous yesterday, he tired as the game went on but some of his hold up play was fantastic.

GDS2 - You worry about why you watch it and I'll worry about why I watch it mate.

We haven't played very well, or should I say, I expect us to play better and I think we need to play better if we intend to win it. We have lacked a lot of creativity and it is very similar watching England to watching Utd at the moment for me. Each to their own mate and I'm suspecting we will kick on after that scare putting Sweden to the sword. But our overall play has been below standard, we are lucky with who we have been up against so far.

Agree0 Disagree3

04 Jul 2018 14:15:34
Last night we had 7 corners and Colombia made 23 fouls, let's say at least 15 of them were in areas where we could deliver. We had 7 corners v Belgium and they made 14 fouls, let's give 8 of them in areas to deliver. We actually only had 3 corners v Panama and they gave away 13 fouls so 7 in areas to deliver and finally 7 corners v Tunisia and they made 14 fouls so let's go 8 within delivery. In total that is opportunities to get 62 chances to deliver the ball at least into the oppositionā€™s box. With the likes of Kane, Henderson, McGuire, Stones all 6ft+ it would be naĆÆve of us to not play to our strengths and with VAR being the way it is why not get balls into the box.

The point is, although our chances arenā€™t coming from open play, we are creating chances to get deliveries in to the box through the runs in behind from Lingard especially and working the ball into good positions for Young and especially Trippier from open play. So for me, we are attacking well, we are getting into good positions and we are punishing teams (Belgium being an exception) when given these chances.

As for Walker being off, he is not in the team now for his attacking ability as he is part of a back 3 so apart from his mistimed back pass, he came across and cleared up well on a few occasions because of his pace. Young defensively was strong and delivered some good balls and Harry Kane was immense last night, holding the ball up, doing defensive duty and getting the pen again and scoring.

If we score 3 more goals for the rest of the tournament and win the games 1-0 and all goals are from a set piece, I for one will not be complaining.

Itā€™s coming home.

Agree1 Disagree0

04 Jul 2018 14:20:11

I think our problem has been putting teams away. We dominated against Tunisia, played some great stuff int he first half but nicked a win at the end. We smashed Panama, then our second 11 lost to Belgium. Colombia are half decent but we made hard work of it.

We are looking like a team that means business and I love Southgateā€™s attitude and demeanour. Iā€™m going we click against Sweden and put them away early.

One other quick point, how big are Rashfordā€™s balls? 20years old, steps up to take the second penalty, top kid.

@The beast, well i'm sorry for what i'm about to say but for the very first time since 1990 i see a proper english team, you guys were always favorites but only in your press and country and some people used to say that because of your name but never ever really had a team to make that statement, you had very good players but played the same primitive way you had always played and that was enough to beat some countries but never against the best, now for the very first time i see a proper english team maybe you don't have a masterclass like scholes anymore but are finally playing footy the right way and you guys need to understand that the possesion game that you are playing now is new to your players so if you don't win the world cup it isn't the end of the world but its a step forward in the right direction. You are sub17, sub20 and toulouse champions so you are finally doing the right things and i really like Soughtgate, he is the right guy to make you grow as a football nation, no more long balls to your centre forward now its more possesion and controlling the game than primitive footy.

Good morning guys

We can't be changing Sterling for Vardy and Alli for Dier while leaving Rashford and Loftus Cheek on the bench when we need to WIN the game; Kane and Vardy are similar in that they both want the ball played into feet. Worse still is having a midfield of Henderson and Dier. What was that? Did he think that Lingard would do the running alone? Seriously, use that against a better team and they'll thump us. Please get the message to Southgate; When a game is poised such as the last one, you need to bring in pacy and creative players who can increase your lead rather than rest on your laurels. Just my two cents.

Believable1 Unbelievable3

{Ed001's Note - Vardy doesn't want the ball played into feet, he wants it in behind to run onto, completely different thing.}

04 Jul 2018 07:54:37
Hi Ed001, That may be the case but he still lacks genuine pace / dribbling skill to take him past defenders; maybe the odd one.

Agree0 Disagree3

{Ed001's Note - pardon? Have you ever seen Vardy play? He is one of the paciest players on earth. He is almost purely about pace.}

04 Jul 2018 08:03:35
Kenny. You answered your own question. Apart from Lingard, England do not possess a creative midfielder. Instead of dier, i would've taken Wilshire, as he's the only english midfielder who can create something.

Agree4 Disagree3

04 Jul 2018 08:06:41
Perhaps I haven't seen that from him then, I remember when he messed us up under LVG in Leicester's 5-3 win but other than that I haven't been so keen - Fair play to Southgate then? Though I still think playing him and Kane without any creativity behind them doesn't do much for the team.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - how have you not seen his pace? That is almost all his game is. I can see the thinking behind what Southgate did, but it was a mistake, he would have been better to try and keep possession and play out time as Colombia were awful.}

04 Jul 2018 08:12:54
AAA, I have gone through the final 23 squad severally to try to identify creativity; unfortunately you're right; England doesn't have creative players like Pogba, Silva, etc. If Mata was English he'd have certainly made the team.

Ed001 - Agreed, exactly my point.

Agree1 Disagree1

04 Jul 2018 08:16:27
The dier sub was understandable as he wanted to protect the 1-0 lead, didn't work on this occasion but better managers have tried this and ended up giving up the lead. For example mourinhos fascination with bringing on john obi mikel on to protect a lead in his second spell at chelsea.

Dont see any problem bringing vardy on late in the game. Either him or rashford against a tired defence is going to be useful for the team with their pace.

04 Jul 2018 13:07:44
The only problem with the subs is that they were too late.

We were getting kicked in the middle of the park and needed to add the strength of Dier and / or RLC earlier on.

Vardy or Rashford again was the right call but it was 20 minutes too late. Sterling should've been subbed much earlier.

But we won so who cares! IT'S COMING HOME!

Iā€™m no expert but how on Earth can PSG not have broken FFP given the deals for Mbappe and Neymar? Football has become a racket, very soon there will only be 4 or 5 teams winning the big trophies and most countries will end up like ascotland with not 1 or 2 teams winning the league every year. Letā€™s be honest, a lot already have.

{Ed001's Note - because they are selling players like mad.}

Tony agreed, but we're only jealous. I would love United to buy Mbappe, veratti, kante and greizman. But it'll never happen.

I thought Sterling was shocking tonight, my 12 year old son has better touch than he did. Really thought Southgate would have pulled him at HT for Rashford, I believe ENG would have been up a couple goals at the half should Sterling not started.

You wanted a city player taken off for a United player? I can't believe it!

Thought Sterling was steady last night, caused a few problems. He isn't the player he is for City but England don't have De Bruyne and Silva creating the chances for him.

GDS2, lol I know mate but honestly Sterlingā€™s first touch is shocking. I felt that Rashford has the pace the Stering is there for and he certainly will link up better with Lingard.

Cracking win, happy for the boys, but Iā€™d like to see a change at that position.

Rashford can't control the ball either though half the time.

Got to agree with 77,

sterling should have been swapped with Rash in the second half. Colombian defence on yellows and looking suspect get Rash to run at them with some simple balls over the top, in my opinion we let Columbia off the hook and allowed then back into the game. We need to learn and move forward and smash sweeden! . come on England.

Stirling is nothing short of woeful in an engkand shirt offers absolutely nothing cannot control his own feet and hardly runs at players. Hasnā€™t scored for almost 3 years in an England shirt should be impossible to start him.

Would like fellow posters opinions about England please. I am delighted the team are going thought tonight but I have to say that I thought even apart from their thuggery for the most part Colombia were a poor team. Maybe it was the nerves or maybe they had too long to wait but to me it seemed a lot of the players seemed very tired and lacked energy tonight. Jesse was a perfect example of this second half as was Kane. Against a better team I think we may well have lost in extra time.
Secondly apart from set pieces we really didn't create much. Maybe Ali is still not fit but he didn't really get into the game. Sterling did try hard but he too is not on song. The problem is who do we have as potential replacements who can create something out of nothing? Also in the second half of normal time and nearly all of extra time there was to my mind far too big a gap between defence and the attack and we didn't keep the ball long enough. That's sad to win the way they did it was exciting and should give the players a lot of confidence.

To be honest hendon England haven't created as much as our scores suggest but it's not England's fault teams seem so scared of England's set plays, I've no idea why opponent's are turning England's set plays into scenes from WWE wrestling but they just keep doing it, it's beyond stupidity and we have had 3 pens but really should have had more in the tournament . They appear to be given warning only seconds before doing it by the refs . It's not England's fault if defenders are a bit thick .

Disappointed in Colombia. I thought they'd make more of a game of it. England pretty much controlled the game, apart from one lapse at a set-piece. After England scored, I thought it was a very mature performance. If that had been Germany or Italy seeing the game out, we'd all have been raving about how they saw the game out with minimum fuss.

Loving the sense of togetherness this squad has, it can take you along way. I donā€™t think Columbia are up to much and lookily they were without there main man tonight, fortunately Sweden are worse so we should make Semis then who knows what might happen šŸ¤ž. Deli Ali is a passenger right now and that canā€™t happen, the position Sterling is being asked to play does not get the best from him either so I wouldnā€™t mind seeing either of them replaced for the next game. I agree Noucamp that it was a mature performance but are you not concerned at the lack of clear cut chances we have created. I know I am.

Iā€™m just really enjoying the atmosphere and vibe of this england team. Gareth Southgate is a really likeable guy and he has done a fantastic job in creating a great team spirit within the camp. Thought it was a mature performance today and unlucky that Colombia equalised. I just want to enjoy it and start believing that we can win it. Donā€™t care how we do it and donā€™t care if we are all getting carried away!

Weā€™re in the quarter finals with a very young team. You can only beat who is put in front of you and the draw has fallen kindly for us. Letā€™s remember Iceland and realise how far this squad has come. Tougher games to come but itā€™s great to see such a team spirit and long may it continue.

We are in the QF. Job done by Southgate and with this team heā€™s done a great job. Anything else is a bonus now so enjoy the ride. Itā€™s been a tremendous World Cup.

Totally agree with the general sentiment to enjoy the success and togetherness but we really do have the most wonderful chance to get to at least a semi final if a work cup. Team spirit carries you so far but I wish we really had more creativity. Going home on the tube last night after the match the happy faces of people contrasted starkly with the usual dour looks I see. Instead of people being silent they were chatting away. That's the power of football. I want this to continue throughout the country. I also don't want to think in years to come that we missed a golden chance to win the world cup because we used defeat to Iceland as our yardstick to define our future success. I want the team to really go for it. No fear.
