I see many fans having a pop at mata. His record when played centrally is superb for goals and assists. Playing him wide is pointless because he is not a winger. There is nobody technically better than him in our squad. He is not the quickest in terms of pace but he is in terms of brains. When Mata was chelsea player of year two seasons in a row he played through the centre and was one of the best players in the league. If the players in front of mata have pace and make the moves he will pick the holes and find the spaces. Mata is a player like silva who you don't ask to defend you ask him to do what he is good at which is a playmaker. No doubt in my mind mata would feed falcao, rooney and rvp from that position. Mata wants to be at united and cares about the fans. The last two games i have been at old trafford and mata stayed and signed all autographs whilst our captain got straight into his range rover and drive away. Mata for me is world class and we need to keep world class players. Mata has done more than most if you look at his goals and assists. If he was put up for sale a long list of clubs would want him. For me Mata must stay.

Believable10 Unbelievable0

Completely agree. He is a model professional and fantastic playing as a number 10. If we get champion's league next year, having a deep squad is essential. Rooney may not always function as a playmaker and Januzaj is still young and won't be playing week in and week out so he will get a lot of games in his preferred position. Selling Mata would be a big mistake imo.

Completely agree johnjoe11

People slagging him off are pathetic. His assist and goal ratio are very good, he's a very clever technical player. He lacks pace yes, but his brain is quicker than most and he picks out passes so it doesn't matter. And in top of that he has good set piece delivery! For me, he should start every game before Rooney

Agree1 Disagree0

John. I agree that mata is an exceptional player and if we get into cl then we'll need depth.
But in my opinion, he doesn't possess the energy or mind that Silva has.
I watched city last night, and Silva was unplayable.
It will be interesting to see mata's performances in the next three games.

Agree2 Disagree1

Saw Silva last night didn't defend reason why city got caught on the counter down the left but he dictated the game as a number ten set p a few chances and could scored Mata is our very own version of this and how many times do you see Silva sprinted past a player very few Mata is the very same

Agree0 Disagree1

Silva is much better than Mata, he has better movement and can cover the ground quicker, he is braver and links better. Both very intelligent without a doubt and I like Mata, but he is not in the same class as Silva.

There is far more to the free role than goals and assists, its about being an outlet and creating space for others, Mata struggles with this part for me which is why we have created so few chances when he has played previously.

Mata won player of the year for Chelsea twice, where did they finish overall? He can be brilliant, but more often than not he is a passenger in a Utd shirt, who does have a very good knack of getting goals here and there.

We should see how he goes over the next few games with quality and pace around him, because in his defence this has been lacking and he needs movement to excel. But anybody saying that because he has scored a few and got the last touch before somebody else scored a few times justifies World Class status is deluding themselves, he is very good but not world class.

I admire him as a man and wish more professionals showed his attitude to the game and supporters.

Agree2 Disagree2

Beast. You've nailed it. Setting our prejudices aside, Silva is in different class to Mata. He does link up better than mata and his penetrative passing is the best in the league.
Mata is a decent guy, but personally, I never see him as a game changer. Silva is.
Hope mata proves us wrong in the next three matches.

Agree0 Disagree0

Beast
So basically Rooney is mata plus the running and minus the class?

Agree1 Disagree0

Silva is a better version than mata.
silva was excellent yesterday different class

Agree1 Disagree0

Yes IMBS but they are the two most important things, so virtual opposite players - if you could mix the two then we would have the perfect player.

Agree0 Disagree0

Silva is the best in the league at what he does and just a complete footballer. That is what he starts for spain and mata does not.

I read a quote that said David silva could find space in a single bed with dawn french. Different level to mata.

Agree2 Disagree0

GDS, classic.

Agree0 Disagree0

As a chelsea fan, I can say that Mata (when with us), was as good as Silva. He can score more goals than Silva and doesn't go hiding in the big games.

Carrick plays tomm and captains the side I say.

Believable0 Unbelievable13

Personally I would look to Blind as Captain in the next three games. They said Keane was SAF's representative on the pitch, likewise Blind knows LvG and what he wants. When we went down to 10 men Last week I watched him cajoling and organising. Captain in football isn't as important as cricket by a long way yet there should be a leader and loudest voice on the pitch and Blind could do it.

Agree5 Disagree1

I also think Blind should be captain, makes perfect sense.

Very unlikely at a club like United to give the captaincy to a new relatively unproven 24 year old, regardless of whether he knows the manager well. Just can't see it.

Does anyone know if Fellaini and Carrick are available for tomorrow's game?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think fellaini is

Agree0 Disagree1

Jred

I think carrick will play tomm and captain the side.

Agree0 Disagree10

Fellaini is but apparently not fit to play 90 minutes. Carrick i think is still training by himself away from the first team?

Agree1 Disagree0

04 Oct 2014 20:26:02
Carrick is still injured

Agree1 Disagree0

Gcu
I would be surprised if carrick starts if he does he won't play 90 so i can't see him getting the armband

Agree0 Disagree0

I think carrick will be great alongside a herrera or blind. I know people say he slows things down but so does mata.

He is great in providing cover for the back four and can pick a pass and teams will not be able to focus on blind like they did in the second half as Valencia is never going to threaten anyone with a telling pass.

All this talk about Wellbeck is just ridiculous. Credit to him for sure but, he only scored a couple of goals and suddenly everyone is hyping it up and saying he will outscore Falcao, Rooney, RVP - really? Those 3 guys have "been there done that" and scored lots of goals and some sensational ones as well. And when these guys are on form, does Wellbeck really stand a chance of outscoring them, not really.

Wellbeck may have the pace, strength and a few skills on the ball but, if you are a striker - first and foremost you need to be clinical in front of goal. Falcao, RVP and Rooney are not only clinical but, have a touch of magic about them and they have been consistent at what they do.

For Wellbeck to be considered as one of the best strikers, he needs to be decisive, clinical in front of goal and be consistent and score 20+ goals every season. Until then he is just a potential.

I can understand the centiments of the United faithful - a local lad who everyone wanted to do well but, it didn't work out. He certainly added pace and energy to our side and did admirably well in a couple of matches, when he was at United. Unfortunately he was never going to get enough matches ahead of Rooney/RVP and even if he did he wasn't as decisive and clinical as the other strikers in the squad. With United's current situation and finishing in TOP 4 a must, we got Falcao in and Wellbeck really needed to move on for his own good.

Wellbeck is now gone, good luck to him. Instead of just lavishing praise on him everytime he does something good, let's move on and talk about our own players for a change - McNair Debut, Januzaj's goal. Let's move on from the past.

Believable11 Unbelievable3

He is still bambi and glad he is gone.

Agree5 Disagree6

"Centiments" = very precisely measured emotions.

Agree3 Disagree3

In my opinion he had his chance with us, form is temporary class is permanent

Agree0 Disagree1

I don't get the phrase "form is temporary, class is permanent." Surely players must come into good form to be considered to have class?? Look at Sturridge before he joined Liverpool. Does Fernando Torres still have class?

I believe we'll see Fletcher replacing Herrera as he's the vice captain and we do not have Rooney.

I was hoping we'd see one of the youngsters being given a chance.

The whole discussion about selling players which includes the likes of Rooney/RVP/Mata is quite interesting. Given the fact that we will be challenging for top honours in the near future, IMO we need to keep our experienced top quality players in the squad.

As others suggested, I would say first get rid of the likes of Anderson, Young, Valencia, Cleverley, Nani, Fellaini, Smalling/Evans and others who are not in LVG's plans, which should free up enough space and give enough gametime to keep everyone happy. Bring in quality CM, CB and a winger(similar to DiMaria) - would prefer players with some real pace. That should complete the squad.

Even if we need to sell the likes of Rooney/RVP/Mata, we need to have a replacement in place already - especially our strikers. Both Rooney/RVP are clinical and can get us 20+ goals a season so, if one of them was to go and say for eg. Wilson was to step in as replacement, initially he should bring in say 10+ goals atleast. Mata's position would be the most under threat, with Rooney already taking his place and the likes of Janujaz/Perriera/Herrera who can also play in that position, it is a complicated situation. He is a pure no.10 with lots of experience and too good to be on the bench. If he feels undervalued and doesn't get enough gametime, he would eventually decide to move on.

IMO, Rooney is pretty much safe, he does score goals and is versatile enough for LVG's tactics. RVP - if he keeps scoring goals, can't see LVG letting him go anytime soon - by the time he is gone, hope Wilson is ready. Mata - a lot will depend on how much gametime he is afforded and if LVG sees him in his plans.

On an another note, really pleasing to see the young lads getting a chance and they are making the most of it. Hope they get more gametime this season and can't wait for Falcao to start banging some goals in.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

Next summer rvp will have 1 year on his contract and be 32.
would you give him a new one

Agree0 Disagree1

No, maybe like old days one year extensions but nothing more that is if he is still scoring goals.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would be very surprised if RvP hasn't got a clause in his current contract where MU could secure him for a further year if they wished to. Similar to what Berbatov had, similar to that of Evra and all of our signings this summer.

There is also very high loyalty fees built into RvP's contract so it's much more likely that we will let his contract run down. I think it's fair to say that he will probably have 1-2 more seasons at the club. We will see :)

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Nice to see you back, Syd, I hope everything's OK pal.}

Syd
I don't think its much more likely he will stay for another couple of years.
If he has another injury hit season i think he is gone .
if we play 4-3-3 next year which i think we will falcao will be our striker.
I also think if some one offered him a 3 year deal (which united won't ) he might well be off .
Juventus, milan maybe inter

Agree0 Disagree0

007, I am okay mate thanks.

Jred, you could well be right, but I think he still offers a lot. Even now whilst he's hit a poor patch he still gets goals. Injuries could well be key to LvG's decision, but financially it could be better for MU to keep him than let him go. If rumours are accurate then a £10m loyalty fee payout is what he will receive if he is sold. He wouldn't sell for much more than £15m due to his age. It may be better to let his contract run down.

{Ed007's Note - Good stuff (y)

Syd, good that your back.

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks guys, I'm glad to be back, HMP Dartmoor just isn't the same as home :)

{Ed002's Note - Welcome back Syd.}

Syd
It all rumours but i read he got the 10 mill if he saw his contract out .
But that's all ifs and buts .
time will tell but i wouldn't be surprised if he left

Agree0 Disagree0

Welcome back Syd!

Agree0 Disagree0

RVP will NOT be in a United shirt next season. He's off. Which gives a bit more 'why' to the Falcao deal.
