I think time is running out for pogba out and either 1 of our top 2 targets of SMS or kroos coming in.
Is not being able to sell pogba holding up sms to madrid and kroos to united.
I think toby deal is all but complete.
Rw is a concern 65m for willian who is a good player but crazy money at his age.
I still can't understand why martial or rashford don't go all out to make that right forward position their own. Its their quickest route to the 1st 11and it would be great to have a player that can go outside hus man and cross. There is no reason why they can't play there imo.

Sanchez is the obvious choice for the right hand side but is overlooked.

Agree1 Disagree2

07 Aug 2018 00:28:33
People say martial was dropped for Alexis but he played from the right and Alexis from the left. But that gets forgotten about. Ken I agree that rash and martial should look to make that their spot. Rashford has played there quite often, but martial doesn’t seem to want to do that. Top players can and should be able to adapt.

Round pegs in round holes. We used to have a proper left winger in Giggs. A proper right winger in kanchelskis. We had centre midfielders and attackers playing in their proper positions. All top players. And we won year after year. Can we stop with this asking for players to play other roles. Let's get back to basics. We might actually win titles again.

Agree2 Disagree0

07 Aug 2018 08:10:31
Sanchez is the best player we have in the squad on the left why play him in the right?

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Aug 2018 08:46:59
Sanchez is perfect to play just behind lukaku in a 3-5-2 for me. Gives him freedom to roam.

If memory serves me right;didn't pogba's agent, mr. raiola say just before the world cup that united were 'lucky' to get mr. showbiz for 100 million and that it should have been at least near 150 million? now bearing in mind old lofty had a good world cup surely his value should now be north of 150 million, now if the club do decide to cash in, and woodward gets anything less than 150 million, then there's something wrong with his abacus, or take 100 million and 'x' amount of players to the value of at least 75 million, simples! -but something tells me woodward has the hard-nosed poker face of mr. bean.

06 Aug 2018 23:41:10
Just out of interest, do you think he’s worth more now that when you signed him?
When he came he was good with bags of potential, some question marks maybe but time to improve them.
Is he not now just older and probably no better?
Plus I don’t think you will get 150 million for a player you want rid of?

Agree2 Disagree0

06 Aug 2018 23:43:11
Cheers Ed for getting my spelling of 'raiola'amended, but there's still a part of me that thinks on balance, i got it bang on!

Is nobody else concerned that we're about to lose Martial and Pogba after our window closes without any possibility of replacing them.

Ed 2 has said they are both available if our valuation is met! With foreign Clubs still able to buy players until the end of August would we have the resolve to reject any offers if the valuation is met after our deadline has passed and we haven't brought anyone in?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

06 Aug 2018 23:44:57
I imagine if we are aware that them players are to be sold that they will be replaced in the next couple of days. No replacements will mean we don’t listen to offers, you would have to assume anyway.

Actually embarrassing, 2 midtable PL players + €50m for Pogba, Barcelona are a very arrogant club. €50m + Dembele and Alba would be nice.

Agree5 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - I would try for Dembele and Semedo. Immediately strengths our weakest side of the pitch.}

This is what Barcelona do, they offered Gomez for coutinho as well before they offered something sensible.

06 Aug 2018 23:07:25
You rekcon a RB>LB Ed004? Also, are you feeling confident in regards to a CB and RW arriving before the deadline?

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - No I think a left back is of much higher priority. I just think Semedo could be dispensible as he has not nailed down a starting role and they have cover there. With the way our club is being operated I don't expect us to do anything the next few days. I just hope we keep Pogba}

06 Aug 2018 23:34:34
Awful awful window eh Ed? This time last week i was thinking we'd be getting Alderweireld and Willian. The owners/ Woodward are happy with top 4. Heavy investment in the year's we've missed out on CL football, rather less when we do get it. No wonder Jose is pissed off, how can you blame him? SHAMBLES! Hope the Glazers sell up very very soon, however unlikely it is right now.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - Shambolic window. No direction, lack of signings, shite performances, disgruntled players hard to be optimistic for the next season}

Well the next few days will tell the story regarding the transfer window, I for one am glad it's shut before kick off. For me, as most, Toby coming in would be a massive improvement on centre back, if no other comings or goings then we've a strong squad still, if Pogba goes we must replace him, SMS would be my pick.
Pre season, not the best prep, half the squad missing and so disjointed performances, I feel pre season is all about fitness and I take little notice of results here. Fred has been impressive and Bailly has looked strong as has Sanchez who will be like a new signing imo.
Coming season, I expect city and scouse to fight it out but if United have a similar points tally to last then we will be challenging too, I don't expect fast paced, attacking football, wish we did play that way but we will be there or there abouts.
On Jose, he's made noises about his happiness with the World Cup and transfers, as someone said earlier he's moaning about what we are too so on the same page somewhat, it's a big season for him mind, many expect a meltdown or him not to stay beyond 3 seasons, by staying on wether he wins or not will be a breakthrough for Jose, he will want to see the team progress tho and if he doesn't he could we be off anyway.
So come on the lads versus Leicester Friday and I am so glad the season is back.

Sorry to be that guy but for me its time to remove Mourinho. I would rather keep a happy Pogba, Martial, Shaw, Rashford ect and have someone encourage and build a team rather than Mourinho spending hundreds of millions on short term "success". His current attitude just stinks of his last season at Chelsea. He seems to have already lost the players and it won't be too long before he has a go at the doctor.

Believable12 Unbelievable18

06 Aug 2018 15:52:16
Lost the players based on what evidence? They all seem happy to me.

Agree16 Disagree13

06 Aug 2018 16:03:42
Martial Is desperate to leave, Pogba's agent has been meeting with other teams, Luke Shaw can't put a foot right, I'm assuming Rashford can't be happy with his game time last year. The whole defense often gets bad mouthed in the media.

Granted a lot of this may just be paper talk but If my manager at work was consistently bad mouthing me, my work, my work ethic and saying that me and my colleagues are not not good enough then I don't think I would be very happy.

If I had a choice of a happy Pogba and Martial staying or Mourinho at this time I would much rather keep the first 2. Another manager may be able to bring the best out of them.

Agree11 Disagree10

06 Aug 2018 16:12:57
If a player isn't happy playing for Man Utd then they need to leave. I didn't realize that we are now in the making random players happy business.

06 Aug 2018 16:13:13
Luket, rashford is still young and raw and is not expected to shoulder the responsibility of starting every game. Seeing him being given the no10 I think puts to bed the idea he may want out and a lack of faith from the club. As the Donald would say 'fake news'.

Agree6 Disagree0

06 Aug 2018 16:45:45

What are you talking about? Jose out is one thing but to list players that uve decided are unhappy.

Pogba never really wanted utd, justb a stepping stone, shaw is useless and has been under 4 managers, martial could fall in a bucket of tits and look like he only managed to suck his thumb - he's that miserable naturally and rash, rash is home grown and loves utd. he's seemes happy in the actual photos I've seen in the rags.

Agree7 Disagree5

06 Aug 2018 17:05:22
Question is, will any new manager get more out of the current squad? I assume the reason there are no new ins is that to buy we need to sell. In which case, name a manager (in the top half) who has come in and not spent heavily to generate better success on the pitch? The big challenge we have had this closed season is that we haven't been able to shift the fringe players who need moving on so that we can give more game time to the next generation and hire quality. Both the World Cup and the fact our fringe players are on massive wage packets has meant no new ins. That's not the managers fault as he isn't involved in negotiating wages.

Agree4 Disagree2

06 Aug 2018 17:19:06
Maybe you're all right. I have never wanted to see Mourinho in the job since day one so my judgement is probably clouded. I'm 29 and this is the only season in my life that I am coming in with no hope of winning the league.

I really think we would be better off with a young exciting manager who can build a squad rather than demanding over £100 million be spent each year and then ignoring the ones we brought the year prior. Mourinho's negativity and attitude just sucks the life out of the club for me.

Fergie always said that no one is or should be bigger than the team. Mourinho for me is proving that wrong. No matter the score on the weekend its always his comments that make the news.

Agree4 Disagree3

06 Aug 2018 17:45:25
Rashford not happy with games? Does he want to play less, can't play many more than he did last season. I'm sure he was out most used outfield player for us.

06 Aug 2018 17:58:21
From the bench!

Agree2 Disagree2

06 Aug 2018 18:21:05
Mikeymike there are a few managers. I know everyone always goes to Leicester winning the league, Spurs have had a net spend of about 20 million since Poch took over and they have progressed. Burnley have improved a lot with very little spend. I know our squad is not as good as City's but i believe it should be preforming a lot better. I don't think the players fit the styles Mourinho wants to play.

In regard to the transfers I totally agree we need to clear space but I worry with the players we are linked with if we are moving forward. Maguire had a great world cup and a decent season last year but does that warrant the massive fee or will we just end up with another player in 2 years we can't move on due to wages. Boateng has had injury issues for the past few years. Dalot looks promising but is unknown at this level. Fred looks very good though.

Did the club put Beckham before SAF? If they had what would have been the outcome? If you put players in front of the manager it is a very steep slope, next manager does something the players done like or asks them to do something they don’t want to do they know a quick sulk gets the manager the boot, then it will repeat. The board should make decisions on the tenure of a manager but not because some players sulk.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Aug 2018 22:37:06
True Redman. Beckham thought he was bigger than the team so he was moved on. SAF knew that nobody should be bigger or more important than the team or the club yet in the media everyday we don't hear about the results or the players we only ever hear about one thing, Mourinho.

Granted I have only lived through 4 Man Utd managers but i don't remember any manager at any team that has that sort of influence.

Agree1 Disagree2

07 Aug 2018 02:08:37
luket. haven't you noticed that about 90% of "stories" from so the called "news" media are just negative trash stories. don't read too much into it. a good example was the martial and his newborn. journos (if you can call the leeches journos) tried to make it look like martial was missing training. its unfortunate but bad news seems to sell better. creating drama for profits sake.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Aug 2018 15:26:21
It seems to me the main problem is the necessary process of getting rid of marginal players prior to acquiring new ones. This has been a problem for a while now. In the past few years we've had to basically give them away, probably because our wage levels are beyond the capacity of the level of clubs where these guys belong. Now it seems we're compounding the problem by holding out for market level or higher transfer fees, which, combined with the high wages, is further deterring departures.

Almost everybody on this site would not be upset to see the back of Martial, Darmian, Shaw, Jones and Smalling none of whom were purchased by Mourinho, who seems equally luke warm to them, and yet they are all still on our books. Is this the fault of the manager? Does he have reason to complain? I think he does, which is not to say he gets off scot free.

All is not lost. We still have the makings of a team that can compete. They may never have the flair of City or Liverpool, but there is absolutely no reason why they shouldn't maintain their progress come what may with transfers in the next few days. Mourinho may have cause to complain but If they don't make top 4 again he will still be culpable for the failure.

I see it this way and i could be totally wrong.
If we sell pogba to barcelona we will try to buy savic or kross to replace him.
If we sell martial we will buy a rw to replace him. Possibly willian.
If we sign toby or harry one of smalling or rojo will leave
Tfm tuanzebe and will go on loan possibly mctom due to signing of fred and emergence of periera.
Personally i too would like dembele but if pogba goes we need to replace him in midfield.
I can't understand why martial or rashford have not grabbed that rw or right forward position. Both could add a great new dynamic to the team if they started beating their man on the outside and putting the ball in. You would think with their dribbling ability it would be their quickest route to 1st team starters.

Hi Eds,

How would you sum up Ed Woodwoods job since he's been at united? A lot of criticism goes to our manager.

I also don't understand why Ed would give José a contract a few months ago and then (appear) to not back him in the Transfer market? I guess that goes for a lot of clubs too

Thank you for your time.

06 Aug 2018 14:46:50
The situation is slightly confusing from some supporters points of view.
It sppears that ed woodward is trying to get some deals done.
It appears that the club and manager are not alligned on wherher certain players should stay or go.
It appears that the managers first choices are not the clubs 1st choices in a ciuple of cases with regards to new signings.
It aopears that the club are working within financial constraints which is correct given the wasted money and unreal inflation in fees wages associated costs.
It appears to many supporters that there are too many people at the club that should all be on the one page are in fact not even reading the same book.

Agree4 Disagree0

06 Aug 2018 15:03:18
people can have there opinion on ed, but the guy has made countless sponsorship deals and is absolutely raking the income in for united as a business.

{Ed001's Note - is that good work on his behalf or could anyone have done that? Not exactly a difficult sell is it? Also that should be below his pay grade to complete those deals, it is simply a marketing departments job, not a CEO.}

I would say the average supporter has no clue what goes on at the club, or how difficult it is to get players in.

You only have to look at the press who don't seem to know what the real targets are.

In a big club run like a corporate global business who really has the power?

Plus how many managers last 5 years at a club so how far do you back them, how many players want to stay 5 years, who wants to go north of London if they choose UK.

Its not black and white.

Bit of a strange one at the moment with Jose's comments and people seemingly turning against him based on a few dodgy performances with half a team out in pre season.

It seems from listening to Jose that he agrees with most of us on here, we need a centre back, a left back and a right winger, or at least 2 of these, and as it stands the club are failing to provide that. I think we all recognise that with for example Alderweireld and Pulisic in this team we suddenly look a hell of a different prospect, so we actually agree with Jose on my many things.

A lot of people seem to be slagging Jose off for being negative about the exact things they are also negative about, if Jose was writing on here about the squad I think he would be saying the same as the majority of people about where we are short. He is a winner and wants to win the league as do all of us and he recognises along with all of us that this squad is 2 or 3 players shorts of being able to challenge.

Let's hope we get these players in because I think there will be a huge turn on here into positivity and in turn Jose will feel the same way as us, that we then have a chance of challenging.

Over to you Ed.

Tbf he got a winger (even though he's looked so much better up front in a two man partnership) in january.

And he got two centre backs in two seasons.

He hasn't come out and said why they aren't sufficient. He just wants the club to spend tonnes of money on older players.

The club are well within their rights to not trust jose considering he hasn't stayed longer at a club than three seasons and it is know he's not happy in manchester.

Agree2 Disagree2

06 Aug 2018 13:48:15
Jose is a master at turning football matches into wars of attrition. He prefers warrior's to footballers. When it works he's a genius when it doesn't he's anti football and the enemy of the game.

He's a sticking plaster on an arterial bleed. His tenure was only ever going to be short term and he's not been given the tools to succeed. No point in moaning about it now we all knew what was coming when he was appointed.

In my opinion we should trust in the traditions of the Club and follow the model that has brought us a clear formula for success. We need a young, hungry manager that will promote and encourage youth. Has a philosophy and a commitment to playing entertaining, attractive and attacking football. We as fans also have a responsibility to show patience and restraint once someone delivers this philosophy even if success is not achieved instantaneously. I've heard a lot of posters say they'd rather us play attacking, caviller football even if we don't win but I'm always sceptical of these posts.

In my opinion more pressure must be applied to the board to demonstrate a commitment to ensure that the team challenges for the top honours and does not settle into a world where success on the field is LESS important than its success off it. The money is generated by the Club, its history, its tradition and its fans and not by the Glazers. They haven't invested a penny of their own money and let's not forget the massive debt they have saddled on the Club and the amount of money required to service it. As far as I'm concerned almost all of the money generated by the Club should be invested back into the team. Let's not kid ourselves the teams that spend the most money predominantly enjoy the most success. Of course there are exceptions to every rule but this is an inescapable fact. Liverpool with a stadium and turnover half the size have invested significantly more than us in this window. How can this be allowed to happen when our team is still in need of significant investment ourselves? Yes money can be wasted and often is by ALL Clubs but this a poor excuse for not spending it.

In my opinion the problem lies squarely with the Glazers and not the manager. Ok we might not like his style or his methods but I have absolutely no doubt that he wants us to WIN. I'm not sure the same can be said for our owners and the only place they seemingly want to win is on the stock exchange.

"I am confident I will get one [new player], but I think two I am not going to get - which is not a drama,  in every pre-season it happens the same with every club which is the manager wants more. It's our nature, you always want more for your team but then club decisions are different and normally you don't get what you want which happened during all my career.

"So if I get one player until the end of the market, that's fine. "

Doesn't seem that bothered to me, this is real life not football manager .
It's the fans who want us to buy 6 first team players every summer for 500mil and then get upset when we don't.

Dlib. Totally agree.
Gds, good post but you mentioned we need a centre back, a left back and a right winger, then you wrote "or at least two of these". Why? We are Manchester United, the most successful club financially. So why do we have to settle for 2 out 3? At the moment, we haven't got any of them. And that is irresponsible and unacceptable behaviour by our owners and the Woodward plonker.
But i don't think they give a toss. And that's the worrying part. I have had two season tickets since 1969, but i have not renewed them this year, i have passed them on to a friend. I love the club as much as i love my family, but with the present owners, I've lost my respect for the club and i shall not be lining their greedy pockets with any if my hard earned money.

Shame you’ve felt the need to lose your season ticket, I’ll be there on Friday supporting the lads and I can’t wait, maybe I’m a mug but couldn’t dream of giving up my ticket, will be going through thick and thin as always, I hope you regrets you decision and I’m sure you hope you do as well.

Good post GDS2 and it puts matters into a different light.

People are disappointed with Jose for a number of reasons. For me (and most, I think), it's the style of play. It's almost as if he's on strike with the team setup because he isn't getting his way - which we've seen before. I do totally agree with the positions that we need to fill and RW has been a priority for a few years now. Hopefully he gets his way and things change.

But the way we play in preseason DOES mean something. We're playing the same negative rubbish, midfield that can't pass, team that has no obvious tactics, players who seem confused.
These matches should be about getting fitness and playing offensive attractive football and bedding in some youngsters. Real played the kids and they played us off the park in second half, we had 5 youngsters on the bench but only one was used.

Forget about last nights result it's not important but I think it's about time we all accepted that's whilst Jose remains in charge we will continue to be a predominantly defensive outfit especially against the top teams.

From an attacking perspective It doesn't matter who we sign the approach will not change. We will continue to defend deep, with numbers behind the ball and try to counter. The problem with this approach is when we win the ball back we inevitably lose it again as we don't have a forward option. It makes us look disjointed and devoid of ideas. Against teams that press this problem will be amplified a thousand times.

Sanchez and Mata, so effective in pre season returned to their usual
positions out wide where they got dragged so deep they effectively became auxiliary full backs. Sanchez must play higher otherwise we will simply not see the best from him.

It makes sense to me that Jose is targeting a dominant CB. We conceded another soft goal from a set piece when in reality we should be winning those types of games from set pieces. That after all is the plan. Sit deep, frustrate then try and nick a 1-0 win from a set piece or counter attack. In that respect Maguire or Mina would be shrewd signings. Aerially dominant in both boxes and any perceived defensive fragilities are compensated by the fact we play so deep with numbers behind the ball.

Jose isn't going to change and why should he? Almost unparalleled success in several different countries is testimony to that.

Acceptance is now our only option. Performances can no longer be judged aesthetically or by feelings of enjoyment and excitement. In Jose land the result is King and the ends always justifies the means, even in pre season friendlies.

From an attacking perspective we look as impotent as the day he started. There has been no evolution in terms of style or attacking intent.

The only conceivable title challenge will come from keeping clean sheets and hoping that some of the undoubted quality in our team can fashion enough opportunities to nick a goal. When we take the lead we win and we can all take at least some comfort from this statistic.

For most this post will be depressingly hard to read. There will be times when everything clicks and we'll play some good stuff much like we saw last year, but the key to our season won't come from improving our attacking style or scoring more goals rather than cutting out defensive mistakes the likes at which we saw at Stoke, Huddersfield, Newcastle and the two set piece goals conceded against City at OT to name but a few. Our title will be won from a solid defensive platform and keeping clean sheets rather than gung ho cavalier football, adding another quality CB before the deadline might just be the most important signing of Jose's Utd career.

Let's take enjoyment from results because without them are we really any different to Burnley in our approach or philosophy to the game. (no disrespect intended) .

This is not an anti Jose post and I always take more enjoyment from the result rather than the performances. Winning after all is what it's all about. I must concede to the doubters however that when we don't win this approach is hard to justify and not in keeping with the traditions of the Club and certainly not what we've all become accustomed over the past two decades.

Jose won't be around forever and moving forward the Club must decide what direction it wants to take us.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Aug 2018 11:50:49
I don't see this as a Jose problem. He's simply doing what he's always done.

The problems lies with the board appointing a manager who's entire approach is in conflict with the traditions of the Club. To exacerbate matters it would appear they have a differing approach to transfers as well. The Club being reluctant to deliver players of a certain age but expecting the manager to compete with one hand tied behind his back. Once again they have in my opinion demonstrated an astonishing level of naivety and arrogance over estimating Jose's ability and under estimating the competition.

Yes Jose has spent lots of money but so has everyone else. Jose inherited an unbalanced and average squad. Investment was badly needed just to return us to the parity of top 4. Have we really seen a commitment from the board to now take us to the next level?

It remains my opinion that the owners are unconcerned with results on the pitch merely increasing the profitability of the brand. This can continue to grow without delivering trophies so where is the incentive to give Jose the tools to wrestle back the title when they have no guarantee on their investment?

We're stuck now until we unearth the next managerial genius. In my opinion the Club should be scouting the globe to try and find him. At this moment in time Potch appears the obvious choice. A young talented coach with a commitment to youth who plays exciting, high intensity football and can deliver results working within a budget. Whether he could transfer this into trophies remains to be seen but that's an argument for another day.

Agree1 Disagree1

06 Aug 2018 12:24:06
DLIB, good posts. I do agree that the style will not change, but I don't see any style apart from parking 10 men behind the ball, then losing the ball very easily. We simply cannot pass the ball and have no attacking intent.
In addition, dropping deep is always a risk as when we lose the ball deep, our defense is under immediate pressure. If we were to play 30 yards up the pitch, then th defense will have more time to organize and it will give the midfield the time to win the ball.
But I don't see this changing as you say, so more matches where we are under the cosh for 90mins and conceding a goal. If we were to lose, I would rather see us lose with a fight than this coward attitude. And Mourinho is exactly that.

The owners and Woodward had the list months ago, so why have they sat on it, leaving the important signings until the last few days, it's a massive risk. The club seems rudderless, directionless, leaderless. How true who knows, but it was reported that the only time Woodward spoke to Mourinho during the 17 days of the tour was the hurried conversation in the tunnel. How is that a sign of Woodward leading the club?

It feels like Woodward and the owners are easing the manager out, hoping he resigns so they don't have to pay him off. The cost to the club is turmoil. If the manager goes, Woodward must be returned to the role he can do, signing corporate sponsors. It wouldn't surprise me if this weeks big announcement is a new sponsor.

Pre season doesn't always lead to what happens in the season but what on Earth is the club trying to achieve? To me it seems scrape into the top four is about it. The next few days will need to be spectacular but even if it is we have to bed those players in, which says a lot about planning by the board, the owners and Woodward.

I would say we need to take this with a little context. Let's, for example, say we are buying Toby. Spurs are notorious for doing business late in the window. Why on earth would they allow him to join us early so it strengthens us which he most certainly will as he’s the best centre half in the league. They’ll leave it until the last possible moment and get the best possible price from us.

We can’t buy Pogba replacements until Barcelona buy him - they are in no rush as their deadline is not Thursday. WE need to sell before we can buy. Again Barcelona in a good negotiating position for this particular deal as they will know the player wants out too.

It’s all a game of chess and these deals can be complex and time consuming like any large transaction. Have faith Red Man and strap in as they nect few days are going to be crazy.

Agree2 Disagree0

06 Aug 2018 08:22:04
Many other teams in far less need than us are getting their business done!

We have turned into a shambles. I bet just like Kovacic, players are very reluctant to sign for this Utd - a player that barely gets a kick for Madrid and 5 years ago would have been begging to sign - if he is saying we are beneath his standards then that is all we should be looking at, because who is Kovacic.

Before this window who had seen more than a couple of games with Fred or Dalot? They aren't exactly ADM, Falcao, Schweinsteiger - all three of them will have regret joining and players talk a lot.

I said it years ago, if we keep ruining players and playing negative football then it is going to make signing them even harder than it used to be. Mercenaries will be attracted and players with no other option, but if any other top team is interested in them then they are going to prefer going elsewhere.

We have been getting worse with our erratic transfer dealings, the tagline of 'boring' being associated with Utd is not helping matters. We are probably going to break a world record to sign a one trick pony CB in Maguire who will be effective but is not an elite player. Then maybe we will get a Barcelona cast off, by selling Pogba if we are lucky.

Shame.

Agree5 Disagree3

06 Aug 2018 08:42:44
RedMan, it is frustrating watching the club doing its business these days. I fully agree if Woodward was going to save money doing it his way, but he won't. He's shown he's absolute rubbish at player negotiations. So take Toby on/ off transfer, levy wants £60m, we value him at a lot less around £45m, I'm not arguing with that, but what will end up paying for him? Bet £60m at least. Levy would've sold at that two months ago. Same goes for McGuire, Leicester are valuing him around the £75m mark, we're arguing the toss, and will not get him any cheaper.
Woodward gets the sponsorhip deals because any person with a business degree can achieve that. This is Manchester United, a brand that everyone loves, getting companies to sign sponsorship deals, is not all that difficult when your name is Manchester United. So Woodward is not some sort of genius, in fact, the opposite is true.
I've gone on about the owners and Woodward for some time, and the green and yellow scarfs might have to come out to stop this continuous on field demise of our club. Doing nothing is not an option.

Agree3 Disagree2

06 Aug 2018 09:00:11
Red man, have you tried negotiating with Levy? Alderweireld was our number one target at CB, and there is still a good chance we get him.

Levy though is one of the hardest people to negotiate with. By all accounts at the start of the window he wouldn't consider anything less than 75m for Toby, a player who turns 30 soon and will be available next summer for 25m at most.

D
Should the club just pay the extra 50m for one season effectively?

Ed Woodward has made a rod for his own back, saying things like the club can afford anyone publicly. And massively overpaying on all of the players he has signed. The club now has a reputation for paying more than anyone else.

This has made it so much harder for the club to negotiate deals. If we are expected to pay 20m too much for every signing then if we were to bring in 4 players like Jose wants then that's potentially 80m wasted by over paying on players.

The club needs to try and make a stand and change this reputation for the long term viability of signing players.

Then factor in the world cup effectively writing off three weeks of the transfer window, then it closing two weeks earlier then it has made it a hard window to work in.

Spurs haven't signed a single player, Chelsea and City have only signed one each. Liverpool have had a very good window, but one of the players they brought in was agreed the year before, they have paid a nearly double the record fee for a goalkeeper on their new keeper. So the scratch a little deeper and it's not as impressive as first thought. Arsenal have signed several players, none of which I would be particularly happy with if we signed them.

So it's been a tricky window for all clubs.

Agree5 Disagree3

06 Aug 2018 09:00:52
Red Man, do you honestly believe the only time Mourinho and Woodward have spoken is that rushed convo in the tunnel? Or could it be that was the only time they were seen on camera and some lazy journo’s are spinning a little tale for their own purpose.
Jose has already said he gave the board a list of 5 players he fancies. 3 have been signed, allbeit not who us, the fans would’ve probably wanted and we are reportedly working on deals for 2 more.
I can’t get my head around the sheer panic surrounding our club. Spurs have signed no one, City have signed one player in Mahrez, Arsenal have signed a handful who, if Jose would’ve signed we’d all be saying are not good enough. Chelsea have one notable signing in Jorginho. Liverpool have had a very good window, so hats off to them but relax and see what the board have up their sleeve for the coming days.

We fans complain when we overpay. The club seem to be taking more of a stance on it. However Liverpool are now doing the over spending but they are getting deals done. So it’s a lose lose situation.

Pathetic game to watch. Alexis on his own. running like headless chicken. no services provided to him. Rashford#10 non existent. Mata. What's his top speed? Parreira clearly not comfortable. only players trying hard was Fred, Baily and Darmian. Lindelof will ask for double wage as he would have to cover Shaw everytime. and thus he was looking bad. not his fault. he was solid on his part.

Why we need Pogba here. He just can't seat there and protect back 4. so it's not Jose way. 4 players given protection by 3 CM and a world class GK. Darmian was solid. Baily was. so Lindelof. still manager don't trust them and allow CM to venture forward and play. pick some passes to attacker and help them. Jose must go.
