Interesting that Valencia is being played at RB. Even though this may be just temporary until Rafael and Jones returns, I feel that if Valencia can nail down the position we can then add Kagawa as a winger in a style like Park was then use Rooney behind RVP (if bought)

Believable0 Unbelievable6

Kagawa is nothing like Park!

Joe Allen to united, bobby Gould on talksport just said he heard from a very good source, he wouldn't say who!

Believable0 Unbelievable8

I can just imagine how scared City, Chelsea, Barca and Madrid are now that we've gone after Joe Allen. I feel like I fell asleep a few years ago, woke up, and we're liverpool now. Should we move for mediocrity like Lucas Leiva and C*****e A**m as well? -KG

it's annoying to keep hearing "united aren't a big club anymore, they're on the decline, etc. etc." but that's not true. we are still big. the perfect example of a club on the decline is one that won 18 first divisions and 5 champions leagues, but now hasn't been in the champions league for 4 years and now even tries to win the league cup!

Ferguson now says the RVP deal is stalling. Oh dear, I don't know why to say or think anymore, if we fail with RVP with have NO chance with anyone.
Bp

Believable1 Unbelievable3

In all fairness, i would rather like to see Llorente or Lewandowski at Man utd than RVP. I feel that RVP is too old and man utd don't normally like to spend £20m on a 29 year old striker who is an injury prone and just had 1 good lucky season. Out of subject but I think that if we don't land Lucas Moura we should go for Alex Witsel. 1.Alex Witsel is cheaper
2.He is a CDM a position we need more than a CAM/RW
So basically what i'm trying to say is don't worry if we don't land RVP or Lucas Moura. We have back up!

All we need is Wanyama or Sahin, RVP and a decent young left back. If we've got £40M in the kitty, taking Sahin on loan til next season would make sense. Ianskip

Another game and we have to remember it is only pre season. Barcelona are not as far down their pre season as us yet, but let us doing all the running around again which will help us get fitter without improving us tactically

We lacked anything incisive or the ability to move the ball together at pace. We are not going to have that whilst we play with a 38yr old effectively as a quarterback. Our game lacks tempo and we are not dangerous on the break anymore. We yet again struggled to score.

I read Rafaels comment about being freer to express himself with Brazil than with United, maybe Moura has watched the way we play and it isn't Manchester that is boring but Manchester Uniteds slow deliberate style of play to enable a 38 yr old (who can't tackle)to play. Who decides our tempo?

We need three players IMO. The one thing those people who are on here saying we didn't need Moura are missing is that it appears he was SAFs choice. As was Hazard, Sneijder, Nasri and no doubt others. Yes SAF doesn't want to bankrupt the club but we are watching the club trying to bargain and scrimp to get a player at a price that might be affordable. How is Gill and Glazer supporting SAF? He may now have to look elsewhere and I hope after RVP or Lewandowski he gets Martinez and Muniain whilst selling Nani , Berbatov and Anderson but I can't see the money being available.

It is a major turning point this summer as without key reinforcements our tempo is slowing down to a level where we won't compete

Red Man

Believable12 Unbelievable5

Red man,

Would you have paid 40 million for moura and allowed him to stay at Sao Paulo for 5 months, that's the deal they wanted and we would have had to match.

You are out of your mind if you think that's a good deal.

GDS

Well put Red Man. The playing system, the finances and the ineptitude of our transfer dealings are all becoming real obstacles to being the best team in the world. And SAF going from cavalier attacker to "please don't hurt us, I don't want to lose!" -KG

HERBIE

GDS

I was not an advocate of buying Moura and have consistently said Martinez and Muniain but also a striker with pace because we are wide open if Rooney gets injured.

The point is our tempo and pace is lacking and SAF played Scholes for far too long. Anderson is not good enough
Finally transfers , it is not about paying that much for a 19 yr old , we won't pay that for quality and that has been seen since they caught a cold with Berbatov. We have consistently failed in the market to bring in key players and we have to break that mould now or face a season where we will struggle. We cannot keep expecting to buy on the cheap expecting clubs to drop prices to what the Glazers think is a good deal. We are exposed in the team through a lack of three players as a minimum. We will waste Kagawa if he doesn't have players around him.
It is easy to say crazy money but all our targets seem to be crazy money according to SAF and Gill. Not acceptable this window as we have heard it before

Red Man

Red Man, the Moura deal was all about the cash. Whoever met the payment criteria got the player. PSG met all of the criteria. Ed002 has made that very clear so lets not pretend it's for any other reason.

Red Man

United dragged there feet for a month PSG done the deal in 24 hours.
in the transfer market at the moment I would say its bad practice to so publicly chase such a talented young player because one of the big boys will come in over the top just like PSG have.
I would say you have to contact the club find out what they want and either pay it and get the deal done or walk away.
jred

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred

One of the big boys ?

We used to be one of those

Red Man

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred, so no negotiation then? And what's stopping the agents for asking for more afterwards? Football transfers are all about negotiation. All clubs do it, even PSG.

Red Man, Of course we could afford it, by we are not going to pay well over the odds for a player. Don't forget we had pretty much sealed the deal until PSG come in. If you expected us to equal what PSG had offered then you are incredibly naive. We are a self sufficient club, but bankrolled by sugar daddies. Lets not forget Chelsea, Inter & Real Madrid also refused to pay over the odds for Moura.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

It just keeps happening to us, at some point the excuses must end. One thing to learn from this is stop messing around do the deal and get it signed. We messed around on price and when it got into the Olympics we could not seal it. Don't tell the world what we are doing, offer the money needed and don't mess about and get their name on a contract.

Just drove past bridgewater and there was loads of security and me mate recognised one of them and he asked him what was going on and apparently robin van Persie of arsenal is due anytime for a medical anytime now, and if he passes he will wear the number 9 shirt left by the imminent departure of berbatov..
Also he said we won't be signing anymore wingers this summer and that it is a big money centre midfielder that we will be signing next from the list of either :- moutinho, m'vila, cabaye, witsel, Dembele, erikson, watyama.

Me mate said the guy is sound so hopefully he don't talk rubbish.

is anyone else sick and tired of people on here moaning that its the end of the world because lucas moura chose paris over us. Lets examine the facts. The lad is 19 and has played less than 60 games for his club and he's gone for 45 million. Talented as he is that is still excessive. And yes the boy is talented. Also paris or manchester well folks its a no brainer for me and nor would it be for a young brazilian lad either. Especially when he has several fellow countrymen already there. Moving on to what is really cheeseing me off is the amount of people on here moaning. O wont finish top four, club in decline. Blah blah. Grow up. Seriously most of you sound like a pack of pre teen glory hunters. But then it is the school holidays. Most people didn't even want moura, too young, unproven, over priced, not needed, have wingers, need midfielders etc etc. Now your all crying cos he's gone elsewhere. At times it feels like any stick to bash the club. If we'd signed him you'd probably all be moaning that he's not a midfielder. So grow up, grow a pair and stop moaning.

Believable10 Unbelievable5

Moura's agent pocketed 9 million! 9 million for doing what? No wonder we told him to get on his bike. Its one thing to paying a few quid for greasing the wheels but 9 million is a joke. Stupid to pay that sort of money for an agent its more than we paid for hernandez.

Believable9 Unbelievable0

Also Ed27 I think it was said that we don't have the money to buy RVP and we wouldn't pay 20 million anyway.

Is it just me or do all the muppets turn up on this site when we don't sign a player we are linked with?

I am unsure what people wanted us to do with Moura. Look at what Sao Paolo wanted, 40 million+ and to keep him until January, is that what everybody would have wanted us to do?

I like to think that United fans are not so pathetic as to post silly things like us 'not being a big club' anymore because we didn't sign a player you hadn't even heard of 6 weeks ago.

There will be another player who does want to play for us, half the people on here didn't want Moura anyway!

The only other explanation is that Liverpool fans think they can wind United up as they have a small victory when we miss out on a player and they write posts on here pretending to be United fans. I kind of hope it is this explanation.

Looking forward to the new season, can't wait to get back to OT for the Fulham game, hopefully with 3 new signings in the squad by then.

There are so many people complaining about the fact we havent signed Lucas, even going so far as saying we arent a "big club" anymore. Well will all of you just go away and "support" someone else. Tell me the last time we signed a ready made world class player from abroad. In the last 15 years I can think of 3 in Stam, Veron and RVN. Our most successful buys in recent years have come from within the Premier League like Cole, Yorke, Ferdinand, Rooney, Van Der Sar or lesser known names like Solskjaer, Vidic, Ronaldo, Hernandez. So have a word with yourselves and realise that failing to sign flashy Brazilians and such is nothing new and we havent fared to badly so far have we? Ok so perhaps this transfer window hasnt gone the way we wouldve liked but some of you people have been far too spoilt over the course of the last 15 years.

TK-Red

I don't get some people on here, complaining saying we never spend big and buy the big players ETC ETC ETC.

How can SAO PALIO want 40 million for a 19 year old non proven, can't make the starting 11 for the olypic team and other than YouTube can't really stake a claim for his price tag.

No way should we be paying that Kind of money on a player who didn't even get in double figures in the BRAZIL LEAUGE.

If kagawa wasnt in his last year of his contract he would be easily 30-35 million.

But some fans arnt happy with anything. Let Chelsea, city pay big prices unless that player performs and lives up to the hype ( which you can't say or sure I they will) just like Torres 50 million and what a waste. Andy Carroll waste. Veron, berbatov.

I'm happy we isn't pay that amount and look forward to who else we will buy

Not you mate, but I think the breaking the transfer fee record on Keane etc etc is nonsense. To break the record now you would have to spend £80m+, Keane cost a few million. £3.75m back in 1994 is £6.4m now.

That is how high transfer fees have got. Hazards/Lucas' agent wanted the equivalent of Roy Keane's transfer for themselves. That is crazy. Can you imagine an agent wanting £3.75m back when Keane was signed? Football fees have risen much much much higher than inflation has.

£80m back in 1993 was £47m. Keane cost £3.75m.

Sydney!

I think you misunderstand me, when I say kean broke the wage structure I mean exactly that.
Back in day we had a wage cap about 50 k ish kean stuck to his guns over a new contract was offered a big deal by juve but with fergys backing united caved in and gave kean a deal he would of got at any of the other top clubs.
I think this was a bit of a turning point and enabled us to compete at the top end of the market

Never lost faith in the boy - it was clear the talent he possesses and moving to a new country, to adapt to the weather, the language etc was always gonna take time.

I had one concern - that the witch-hunt of the media who tried their best to destroy him just months after arriving, would work. But despite still being a kid more or less, he rose above it and be honest - he didn't even look bothered by it, in a good way.

Water off a duck's back - boy's got confidence and a strong character, as long as he settles we've got a world-class no1 for years to come and Lindegaard is excellent too.

2 big signings coming mark my words
ARB

Agree1 Disagree0

1. Agree - we missed a trick.
2. Disagree - although I'm usually critical of the club for their failure to pay a little extra for top talent - £35m+ is too much for an unproven player (not to mention having to wait till January for him to sign!)
3. Disagree - His club want £30m for him. There's at least 5-6 better players we could sign for that kind of money.
4. Disagree - He's had one good season and a lot of that was down to the way Dortmund used him and the skill behind him. If they turned down a £17m bid from Chelski - logic suggests we'd have to pay £18m+ - which for an unproven player is a hell of a gamble which we don't need to take (already having 3 quality strikers - 2 of whom are at the same sort of level as Lewandowski).
5. Kind of - I'd like to see us sign RVP - but not for £25m. He'd be a luxury that we could do without. If there's £25m to be spent it should be going towards a central midfielder who can win the ball.
6. Disagree - We're a club that's continuing to grow both financially and on the pitch. Our debt is shrinking and our value is rising. We've signed Kagawa already and so far haven't lost anybody - which surely makes us a stronger team on the pitch. Our rivals have all strengthened (or are clearly going to) - but given that the window is still open it seems overly pessimistic to suggest that we're in decline.

Just for a bit of fun, say that we have a £40 million budget, £16 million of which has already gone. Who would you buy with the remaining £24 million + SALES.

For me, i'd get Oveido or Izaguirre for a maximum of £6 million. Then sell Berbatov for £6 million, add the £3 million for Park and £1 million for De Laet we'd have £28 million to go so i'd either beg the bored to finance a deal of Modric, or more likely, I'd put a bid straight in for Witsel. A left back and a central midfielder are of pressing concern, not this nonsense of more wingers of more strikers. I'd like to see us get the matters of need sorted and then look at the luxuries. If we decided after that that we needed a striker we'd have RVP, Llorente and Lewandowski to choose from.

RedDevil19

M'Villa for £17m. If Isco could be signed as well for under £8m - I'd say that we've had a pretty decent transfer window.

First off I would sell Anderson (£8m) and Berbatov (£7m). Then sell Macheda for about £2m and Bebe for £1m. Plus the £1m for De Laet and the £3m for Park. Then I would have £46m to use.

Then I would sign Van Persie for £20m approx. Then Sahin for £15m. That leaves some money for all the other fees. With a bit more money I would sign Martinez ahead of Sahin or I would sign Sahin and try to get Muniain as well. Gilly {Ed004's Note - I would loan Sahin, buy Baines and sell Young to raise funds for Muniain}

Have just seen the RVP story on London Evening Standard and saw a comment from an Arsenal fan saying that if RVP goes to Manchester United then he will have lost all the respect from the Arsenal fans and Arsenal should never sell to Manchester United ..

Isnt it funny how its ok for their players to move to Manchester City but not to us ... Na$ri, Clich£y

When will Arsenal fans realise that they need to concentrate on teams around where they are in the league, rather than holding onto an out of date rivaly with us

Today I noticed a few people around the city centre with Champions 20 on the back of their new shirts. It's this combination of naivety and arrogance that I'm seeing more and more in certain sections of United supporters. It's embarrassing, there's a difference between supporting the team and being so cocky that you celebrate a league victory before the season even starts.

It has been confirmed that Lucas Moura has indeed signed for Paris St Germain. I for one think its absolutely sickening, to spend the whole summer negotiating with Moura, his agent and his family, just for PSG to come in and offer Monopoly money and get the deal in about 4-7 days. It leaves a very sour taste in the mouth that United just cannot compete anymore, this is happening year on year, no sanchez, no benzema, no nasri, no moura, no hazard. I know there are problems with agent's fees, but its time to realise they are part and parcel of buying marquee players.

Lucas Moura signs for PSG just confirmed.

I'm getting sick and tired of this United get linked with the big names just to keep the fans happy.

But its not keeping the fans happy by getting them excited about a signing and then nothing happening or them moving to another club.

Believable5 Unbelievable1

So you answered your own question, that isn't why they do it. We were linked because we were interested but psg offered silly money.

Should we have paid 45 million for him and let him stay in brazil for 6 months? That's what all the fans appear to be suggesting, it's ludicrous. We need quality now not in 6 months when fergie hates getting players anyway. Imagine how much Sao Paulo wanted for us to take him now?

How people complain we don't buy anyone then suggest we spend so much on one player to leave him where he is is beyond me.

DOn't lie to see people slating Lucas. He hasn't ruled out coming to United. He is 19 years old, moving to a foreign country and is being advised by an agent trying to rinse as much out of a deal for himself as he possibly can. Lucas has expressed his pleasure playing at OT and has been good to us so far and as a 19 year old can you blame him for feeling comfort in the fact that there are senior Brazillian coaches and players at PSG who would make him feel more comfortable.

Whats with all the people desperate to get rid of Nani? He is one of the best wingers in the world, yes he has his bad days but one he gets into rhythm he will be scoring every game, we want a better attack force not a weaker one, more options Ferguson has the better.

-JakeW

Believable7 Unbelievable3

I dont think many people are 'desperate' to see him go but there are certain reasons why it MIGHT make sense

e.g.

- his best position is RW, where one of our best performers (Valencia) also plays
- he's not great on the left - which is what we need
- he's inconsistent (last season he probably played bad more than he played well!)
- if he stays we will have to give him an improved contract as his is running out, he wants a very big wage, but is that acceptble given the above?

In all honesty I'm massively undecided when it comes to Nani. One thing he does guarante is goals and assists. But if we do sell him and buy someone who is actually left footed or a natural LW I'll be satisfied

Gav

Agree1 Disagree0

Nani is one of the best there is, there aren't too many better wingers than him out there. And none of the ones that are better than him are available anyway.

RedDevil19

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree Gav, it's tricky one! You can't deny that on his day he's world class. But as I've said before on this site, he has about 3 days a year! He now can't be guaranteed the RW or CAM position as we have Kagawa and Valencia. And as you rightly say, he isn't his best on the left. There are teams who need a player like Nani and will pay for him too. I say we cash in on him and bring in someone who we really need.

Andy

Agree0 Disagree0

If he can score in every single game then by all means keep him, not even Ronaldo managed that feat in a red shirt. However he wont even get close to half of that.

I fear nothing big will happen on the united front until deadline day unfortunately, maybe a signing of someone small, but by no means a £20-30m deal. I don't think Kagawa will be the biggest signing of the summer, I think RVP will, but I think it will drag out until deadline day when Arsenal will realise that they have to sell. expect a long wait for a good signing.

So Lucas Moura is apparently on his way to PSG. Surprise, surprise! I for one am just thankful that we can finally draw a line under the situation now. Am i disappointed? Not entirely, no. I was more disappointed to miss out on Hazard but I think the "typical" response from so called United fans is laughable!

Let's face the facts. We don't have the millions of your Chelsea, City or PSG. They have a massive advantage in that department and are always likely to trump us however the sad reality for us is that the modern day player is majorly motivated by money. I've read what everyone has to say and they are fully entitled to their opinions but I cannot believe the over-reaction yet again. People acting as if Lucas Moura was going to be a savior. The lad has all the potential. But that's it for me just now. He could go on and become one of the best but lets not kid ourselves into believing we were buying a player at the top of his game. I'm actually glad he is going to PSG. If he doesn't realise the opportunity he had infront of him then unfortunately he is blind-sighted and I think we all know that's down to the role of agent's and representatives.

The issue of not spending money, again, is self-explanatory. The funds are clearly available. Depending on who you believe we were prepared to pay anywhere between £25-£32million for Lucas and probably the same for Hazard and that's not even including a wage packet. Hopefully we can now switch our attention to the priorities that we have to address.

The centre of the pitch has been causing me, and many, a headache for some time now. I think Carrick had his best season in a United jersey last year but I'm not convinced by him at times. Anderson is a hugely frustrating player because he has the talent but injuries have savaged him and it's not make or break. Scholes is the master. Not quite like he used to be and you can guarantee he won't play every week but we can still benefit from having him. Fletcher was badly missed last year and it remains unclear when or if he will return. Giggs offers us something in the middle aswell but I don't think he is a natural in the centre. I would love Luka Modric. He fits the bill perfectly. I think he would excel at OT and I don't think we are completely out the picture. Similarly to him, Moussa Dembele has been linked. Honestly, we could do worse. I was impressed with him at times last year at Fulham. Joao Moutinho had a great Euro 2012 but I think he's now unlikely to move. The other player in a creative capacity being overlooked is Yohann Cabaye. Defo worth consideration. Also, I think we lack a bit of steel or somebody in the engine room. Axel Witsel could be the key. Benfica were moniroring Anderson, a deal could certainly come to fruition for me. Javi Martinez would be a quality signing. Highly doubtful but if SAF was going to splash the cash on a marquee signing I think he would be a smashing signing. Nuri Sahin is another who I believe could be a worthwhile signing. He was dynamite at Dortmund and has been overlooked at Madrid, United could provide him with the perfect setting to get his career back on track. Yann M'Villa was a player before the Euro's I would have bitten your hands off for in the excess £15million but now I think he would be somewhat of a last resort, didn't impress at the Euro's and if Mr Wenger has doubts (He is like the French master) then I don't see him fitting the bill in England. For me, the one player i'd love to see join United. Maybe controversial, is Alex Song. People underestimate him, last season he was a standout in midfield and got overlooked because of how super a season RVP had. I would encourage a move for him he would thrive at us imo. Victor Wanyama has been mentioned also, I would see him much like M'Villa a player not near the top of our list.

Defensively, Left Back needs to be sorted out. Evra isn't the same player he was 18 months ago. He gets exposed far too easy in matches and SAF obviously wants competition but I still think he will be our number 1 LB therefore he will still play a big part next season. Jetro Willems would be an awesome acquisition. He's young, pacey and working as an understudy to Evra would learn a lot. Perhaps he is unlikely. Baines looked a cert. A couple of months down the line and nothing! Oviedo is another. I don't know an awful lot about him tbh but we definetly need a left back and I would certainly trust SAF's judgement if he is the player we bring in. Ally Cissokho is another who is contuesly linked with every club around Europe. He was outstanding at Porto and if it was between Baines, Oviedo and him i know who I would pick. Cissokho would be the long-term replacement and I think would be a fantastic signing.

Finally, regarding RVP. I'm in two minds. On the one hand, he's the reigning top goalscorer and Player of the Year and scored goals for fun last season. On the other side, it was his first full injury free campaign in what 7 or 8 seasons at Arsenal. If Arsenal want, as rumoured, around £25million then I would be saying bye bye to any deal for RVP. As a 29 year old in the last year of his contract I think the money could be spent better elsewhere in the team. If he was to stay fully fit then the potential partnership of him and Rooney is frightening. But how would that hinder Chicharito and Welbeck. The criticism of Hernandez is crazy imo. He was plagued by injuries throughout last year and still delivered a solid return of goals. We need players like him. Poachers, someone who just needs a sniff to score. And Welbeck, people forget it was his first full season of regular first team action. He just needs time to flourish at times the link up play with him and Wazza was wonderful. So is RVP a necessity? No, for me he's a luxury.

Sorry for rambling on but as a passionate United fan I felt the need to say my piece. We have brought in 2 players thus far. Kagawa, who I think is a superb signing for us, and Powell, a young lad who has the world at his feet and is at the perfect club to allow him to fulfill his potential. I hope that a couple of new faces arrive and i'm confident that SAF and co are doing everything they can to bring in the right players. I'd agree wee need to invest but either way we are MUFC, not a project like many have said and regardless of whether we bring in any further additions i'll be behind the lads, supporting them and my club 100% of the way.

Bring on number 20 fella's!

Given that RVP is looking like our last signing at the mo what would everyone say to this line up:

_________ De Gea __________

Rafael _ Vidic _ Smalling _ Evra

_____ Carrick _ Cleverly ______

Nani _____ Rooney ____ Kagawa

________ Van Persie _________

I know that Kagawa wanted to play in the hole, but with Van P and Rooney both sure to start I think this would suit everyone best.

The 3 behind Van P could all inter-change positions which is what we are looking for. More fluid attacking football..

Or if we could someone persuade Madrid to part with Sahin & Coentrao for Nani + cash...

Kagawa on the left ? If We wanted a left winger we would have bought one there are quite a few options on the market to choose a suitable player at a suitable price . I have not put Kagawa on the left of a mid-field 4 where he would be wasted.

he starts on the left of a 3 but i would expect him to find himself in the middle at times for periods of the game.

I personally would prefer that he play in behind Rooney and the potential money used on rvp be used on a CM/DM, but if rvp does sign both he and rooney will start so this would be the best formation.

I said it before and i will say it again. We have done our transfer dealings. Two players thats it. There is no money so get used to it. Stop playing fantasy football and get in the real world. Madrid will not sell us a player unless its worth their while. We will be battling for third for a while, the debt is here to stay, no matter who the onwers are. We stick by our team through thick and thin.

All the talk about Moura et al is just to keep fans off the backs of the Glazers and away from supporting MUST. We cannot match what clubs or players want in salaries. Watch as Fergie and Gill state their is no value in the market. As paid employees of the Glazers they will do their masters bidding. Watch as our best players are sold to keep the wage bill down and transfer fees are used to reduce the deficit and not re-invested in the team. Get used to battling for third and forth with Arsenal and Spurs.

Its funny! We are the most expensive Sport Brand in the world and the club with more supporters but this last seasons is showing that its not enough to compete on the transfer market.

Football is business, History does not matter that much lately. So, or we adapt to the new way or we don't compete for great prospect players.

People say, "Oh no, we have good young players coming through the academy"... Yes, we do! Players like Morrison and Pogba, write my words "It will happen again". "We're Manchester United and we have our own evaluation for the players". I just wonder at what cost we'll keep this policy.

I'm not saying we have to buy Lucas at 30 mil up, but we have to put something in our heads this are the kind of prices we'll be facing in the future.

Our current squad will loose any day against Madrid or Barcelona in CL, I'm not being negative, but I'm stupid to believe that with Vidic we'll dominants again. Football is a team game and team game is really need to accomplish season objectives and Kagawa and Vidic won't solve the humiliating season we had in Europe.

We still have few days to improve the squad, but missing all this players to our rivals and smaller teams is a sign we must take seriously.

Disagree if want to, but won't change what everybody is keen to not see.

A DREAM SEASON.

DDG- beats VDS's record of consecutive clean sheets.
Rafael- cementing his position as a solid RB.
Evans- coming in when Rio needs a rest & looking an able deputy.
Jones- turns out to be a very important CDM in Europe & against top EPL teams away from home.
Vidic- scoring at least 5 goals from corners.
Evra- releasing it maybe his last season & playing out of his skin.
Valencia & Nani notching double figures in goals & assists.
Cleverley & Anderson- to stay fit all season.
Fletcher- to come back stronger than ever.
Kagawa- player of the season award.
Welbeck & Chicharito 15 goals each.

Powell, Cole, Lingard, Petrucci, Tunnicliffe- the odd COC if not loaned appearance.
Rooney- 30plus goals.

Been a quiet day on the transfer front but my understanding is that Sir Alex is on the brink of giving Rafael Da Silva the Number 2 shirt as part of the contract he signed recently.

I know he is a bit of you either like him or hate him with the fans so wondered what everyone's views on this would be?

I personally think he has massive potential, and for Brazil at the olympics has started to show maturity...

Believable8 Unbelievable1

So we have missed out on Lucas Moura, it leaves me both happy and frustrated. Happy because we aren't adding to an already strong area of the squad and blowing most of our budget doing it. But also frustrated because we have missed out on a very talented young player. Still though he would have been more of a luxury signing than one which was needed.

RVP is looking quite likely at the minute but then again Lucas was odds on 2 days ago. Still hoping for that CM and maybe a left back but looking like only one more signing at the moment and that is RVP who again might be considered a luxury more than a necessity.

How many players do you want us to sign? 10, 11, 12, 13? I think the most we have signed in a summer is about 5 and that isn't very regular.

Shall we just buy players for the sake of it just so you are happy?

GDS

Agree2 Disagree1

Don't be so down beat. There are financial complications such as the debt which has become our burden from the Glaziers. We cannot expect to spend like Chelsea and Man' city. There do seem to be many players on the cards such as Robin Van Persie which we are firstin line to. He would be very good upfront.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah but is he taking into account Fletcher may never be back to his best and Vidic had a bad injury and may be susceptible to it again or might not be the same player, Along with Ferdinand, Carrick, Evra, Scholes and Giggs are all a year older and a year slower. Alot has to be taken into account and i don't think with 2 new signings it will cover all that needs to be covered!

Agree0 Disagree0

It's not the amount of signings but the quality. Stop whinging. The best usually take a lot of time and effort, we don't want to rush and end up panic buying.

Kagawa - World Class signing.
Powell - World Class Potential.

There have been a lot of rumours about Van Persie signing for us. We are definitley at the front of the queue for him, beating Man city and Juventus. I sometimes get worried when people condemn young talents of being "money grabbers" when we are priced out by other clubs. One thing we should bear in mind is that, this contemporary style of football is no longer conected with 'the love for a club' nevertheless, where the 'cash' is.If not all most of these talents will want to join a club that is ready to spend and meets their valuation. It just that we are not ready to spend big.It was David Silva,Sanchez, etc. the previous season and it is Asamoah,Hazard and Moara this season(more even to follow). We just have to be serious about our transfer policy.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

I agree, if we oursleves were in a situation where we had two different job offers doing the exact same thing and one had much better pay we would immediatley go for the better paid option. So we cannot just condemn the players for being 'money grabbers' when its Human nature and what we ourselves would do.

Agree2 Disagree1

Let's take Man Utd out of the equation because I'm a huge fan and this will only skew my decision. Let's say Arsenal and Anzhi made an offer for your services; Arsenal 80k a week, Anzhi 150k a week. I know which one I would take. Arsenal every time! They are a very well respected footballing club in one if the best leagues in the world, so its totally false and a very easy sweeping statement to make that "everybody would go to the club giving a higher wage".

Most of today's young footballers are money grabbers with money grabbing agents. We will always try and select young footballers who arent ie Powell, Chiquarito, Smalling, Jones etc. Hopefully when FFP rules come in, the Market will level off with regards to transfer fees and wages.

FredtheRed

Agree0 Disagree0

Is it the players or their agents who are money grabbers? With south americans in particular it seems like the agent's have a big say in what happens, which is sad

I agree with FredtheRed to an extent. However, PSG might end up being a good move for Moura TBF to him. We often see Brazilians going to the 'lesser' Portugese league first to earn some European experience - so this could be a good stepping stone for him. Ok so the so called biggest club in the world has missed out on another target to a much smaller team. Last season it was nasri to our nearest rivals, this season it's been hazard and moura. I just hope now we can get RVP in. But I can't see it happening as we miss out on targets above the price of what £12 million ? We never give what it takes to bring top class players in that can change a game and help us win titles. Man city did it last season and won the league. If we don't sign anyone else we won't finish above 3rd even if we sign a left back we still won't because we haven't got a good enough midfield neither are we good enough going foward. Never will we be as good going foward without Ronaldo. So new targets ? Eds opinions ? Anyone else's opinion. Musts are Witsel and RVP. I personally would also like to see Debuchy at the club because he is great going foward, Demba Ba who we could get for less than £10 million and he is a proven prolific goal scorer in the premier league. But let's face it we haven't got what it takes to attract world class players anymore they would rather choose the better teams in the world like bayern, man city, Chelsea and the barca's and real madrids. We could of gr a world class left back in the name of alba for less than £15 million but no missed out on a real good player that would of contributed well to winning games and silverware because we weren't willing to give that extra couple of million. I wonder if we will cough up enough to get in subotic and hummels in a couple of seasons time ? They will be the best centre back pairing in the world, and will be good replacements to vidic and rio. I guess not because they will be attracted to the bigger clubs. Let's face it now we are not a "big" club that can promise players silverware. Also lewansowski would be a great signing, he is going to be one of the best strikers round, and worth a good £30-35 million in a couple of years to come so why not lets make a £20-25 million bid now with add ons. Don't be stupid we won't commit to such a good idea as that. Let's face it were a club o. The decline sorry "fans"

Agree2 Disagree1

Its too unrealistic to produce a great list of players for us. We have to be careful with our money much more so than the likes of Chelsea and City. We are heavily in debt and when we lose out to players its because of our unfortunate financial situation. If we are gooing to get Van Persie I can't see any other over £10million signings this summer. Which in this transfer market is what we need to sign half decent players to strengthen our squad.

Agree0 Disagree0

We are losing out to ridiculous offers quite simply. I hate this "no value in the market" stuff as well. But in Hazard and Moura I would say the fees involved were/are ridiculous, look at the fees paid in Spain bar Fabregas which was a different matter being a home town boy.
Personally I dont think WItsel and Ba are good signings at all, What is all the Witsel excitement all of a sudden, seems to have grown since the Belgium v England friendly. He is a technically decent, strong but pretty average player from what I have seen, dont get the fuss at all.
As for Debuchy, we have Rafael, Hummels and Subotic, yes very good, we have Smalling and Jones and Evans (personally I dont like Evans) but the first two are English and have huge potential

Horray, it looks as though the Lucas Moura saga is over. He is going to be a great player, but at the end of the day he was always a luxury. We have Nani and Valencia for the right, both of whom are world class - if anything its the left hand side that is of concern, but we still have Young and Welbeck who will play a fair few games over there. As for van Persie, if he doesn't sign, do you think we will go in for either Lewandowski or Llorente? I don't see the need for a striker, I never have since the signing of Kagawa. Hopefully we will get a left back, Bryan Oveido would be a good signing, as would Izaguirre. Baines seems off the list since he seems keen on being at Everton next season.

If we get neither RVP or a winger, I really hope we get Axel Witsel. He's my first choice centre midfielder (apart from Modric). Witsel is a class option and can stand up to Yaya Toure which is something we need. However, with Fergie's comments about Fletcher, a central midfield signing may not be likely. So we lost out on the £30 million rated Moura, who cares. All this proves to me is that Fergies right about no value in the market, 19 years old and unproven. Yes he can skip past a few defenders in Brazil. He would get clattered in the prem, Fergie obv has funds available and will use them. People need to stop barking about us not making massive signings, Fergie loves to use youth and will continue to do so. I still say RVP is coming in and Fergie will defo have other options, moan after the transfer day deadline if kagawa and powell are the only signings or sing his praises for making a couple of signings nobody expected. As I said yesterday, moura deal is over. RVP won't sign for us, Arsenal have more sense and would rather lose out on money rather than sell to one of their rivals. Expect rumours involving Gaitan and Rodriguez and I have a sneaky feeling after Berbatov leaves for Zenit then a big name striker will be rumoured to come. Whether we get them or not remains to be seen as the person who negotiates has lost out on 2 big talents (Hazard and Moura) and maybe more that we don't know about.

Arsenal have more sense to lose out on 20m for a player that doesnt want to play for them to a team that they will face twice a season?

No club will turn down 20m to let him go on a free a year later just in spite -thats a good way to go out of business !

I wonder sometimes what this site would be like if the club was still a plc and Martin Edwards was still Chairman. It seems to me that it would be about the same - only the names would have changed.
When was this golden pre Glazer era of unlimited transfer funds and every transfer target agreeing to join us?
I seem to remember huge dissent regarding dividends to shareholders, Edwards grip on the purse strings, no value in the market, players opting for sunnier climes/bigger wages etc etc
I'm no fan of the Glazers, I was no fan of Edwards but I do trust Sir Alex to try to try to recruit the best players for our team and develop the youth talent we have. He's not done badly for us despite any constraints placed on him over the years.
Have a little faith guys and don't be sucked in by paper talk of overpriced and underproven teenage whizzkids we've only seen on youtube.
Mr Q

The main issue with the plc was wages the transfer fees were never that much of a problem, once kean had dug his heels in and broke the pay structure we were quite competitive in the transfer market.
in the last 5 years we payed big money for
ferdy one of the best CB in the world
Veron one of the best CM in the world
rooney THE best young player in the world.
Also at the time we bullied PSV into selling RVN who was the best up and coming striker in europe,he chose us over Madrid.
we also bullied munich into selling hargreaves.

there were issues with the plc especially with the wage structure but once that was sorted i think we done well in the transfer market buying quality players and more importantly in the last 5 years of the plc if fergy wanted a player he normally got him.
jred

Believable4 Unbelievable2

Jred, the difference was RVN & Hargreaves were very keen on joining United. They forced their way out of their clubs to join us. Most players nowadays are not fussed who they play for, as long as a club pays the player and his agent what they want they will sign for them. Times have changed.

Sydney!

Agree2 Disagree0

In 2002 we had a complete squad apart from one position. We sold Stam a year earlier and Blanc replaced him for a season before he retired, but Stam still needed replacing. Rio Ferdinand was the best EPL defender and English (just how the manager likes it) so the manager could afford to spend his entire kitty on him. Leeds bought him for £18m so he was always going to cost around £10m more than that. With Leeds wanting to make a profit and United's and Leeds harsh rivalry it was always going to be in the high 20's.

We can hardly say Ferdinand wasn't worth the money.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

I think there is a big difference between paying huge fees for the top English and for large parts of Europe top players as opposed to further afield. Manchester United are THE club to play for to an English player (though with the sugar daddies even this has changed to a degree, look at Hazard). Manchester United DOESNT mean the same thing to a SOuth AMerican so do you really think Moura cares that much for us? It is the Spanish and Italian giants mean somethign there. To live in Paris for a rich team with Brazilians and money to spend, and probably a high wage, are you surprised? The ONLY rally big marquee signing outside of England we have ever made has been Veron, I think its only an issue to younger fans or because of beign frustrated by these sugar daddies. Personally from the little I have seen of Moura the thought of £35m+ sounds ridiculous
Invisible STuey

you could argue that at the time we were paying more competitive wages and could compete with the big boys the money we offered RVN & Hargreaves may well of been equal or more than munich madrid offered.
but im not going to argue about it because it just gets boring.

the op raised the issue that it was not always great under the PLC and he was quite right , however i think once kean broke the wage structure and we started to pay competitive wages we done quite well in the transfer market.

I think in the last 5 years of the PLC we competed well at the top end of the transfer market,

your quite right about ferdinand , we only needed one player in 2002 a quality CB and fergy went out and payed a world record transfer fee for a cb who for me was the best CB in the world who had also just had a fantastic 2002 world cup.

best part of 30 mil on a cb 10 years ago.
jred

Agree0 Disagree0

I saw a great post from Red Man yesterday about us being at a crucial point, likening us to Liverpool in 1990. There is a huge arrogance on the part of some of the posters on here who just take success for granted, some have only known the Fergie years and seem to believe we have a god given right to win things.
Many supporters like myself who followed Utd through the 70s and before will remember the pain and tears of relegation, then us being a 'cup team' for the next 15 - 20 years, whilst Liverpool swept all before them. The arrogance that Liverpool fans showed then has been repaid by them being a 'cup team' for the past 20 years, falling to a top 5 or 6 team and only challenging for the title on the odd occassion. Some of them still show the arrogance, hence the annual rubbish about this year being their year.
Last season the team struggled and yes before you all start posting we only lost the title on goal difference, the fact was that we THREW the title away, blowing a 8pts lead starting wth the Wigan defeat followed by the Everton fiasco. I guess the way we fell apart summed up our season, humiliated in Europe and the CC, also being torn apart by the likes of Wigan and Newcastle, whilst struggling to several 1-0 wins.
Posters reel off lists of youngsters coming through who will be first team players and say that making certain signings will hinder their progress. Maybe these posters could tell me in the last 20 years apart from the Class of 92 when a group of 3 or 4 players have progressed through to the first team, don't forget we are talking 20 years here. Also the very same posters were telling us all 12 months ago that Pogba and Morrison were the future of the club so we didn't need to make such and such signing. The fact is that the Class of 92 were a one off and there are no guarantees that players coming through now will want to stay at United, add Fryers to the names above.
Like Red Man, I believe we are at a critical point in the history of United and the next 12 months or so will determine whether we continue to challenge for honours or return to being a 'cup team'. Despite what some posters on here seem to think we have no divine right to win anything.

Quality post, have to agree with you and i really hope we dont return to being a cup team.it was heart breaking last season.

Agreed. But a club of our stature should have the funds to challenge the Chelsea city ano PSG s. At the moment we're only buying second rate players in the hope they mature and improve. This policy is fine but you've got to mix it with buying proven talent and paying thru the noise for them. If not, we'll be the next Liverpool.

Keanooh

Excellently put, my friend. There are far too many fans on here who've become way too comfortable with our success.

You made an excellent point about the youth situation: 20 YEARS. Re-read that, 20 YEARS. But still some of our fans are convinced we don't need to spend because we have this batch of world-beating youngsters ready to turn it on.

Well, we said the same last season with the names Pogba, Fryers and Morrison being chief among them - not a single one of them is still at OT, just 12months later.

I'd love to hear which posters truly believe that another trophyless season wouldn't possibly cause another exodus of our youth - perhaps the names Tunnicliffe, Petrucci etc will be those leaving OT next summer if that's the case.

Time to wake up.

I agree with the general point of the post and me and Red man do seem to be on the same page regarding most issues but I feel the 12 months we needed to get it right between were this summer and last summer. We let go of Scholes and used this as a way of trying to convince Pogba he was the way forward. We/he fudged that up and Scholes had to come back as our CM was struggling so bad.

So after putting our eggs in the Sneijder basket and failing then this summer for some reason we are concentrating on areas outwith the obvious problem areas (LB and CM) we could well end up in the exact same sittuation again but with no youngsters as ready as Pogba was for the 1st team.

Ando is not the answer, Clevs can do a job and with luck on his side we could get a top player out of him, Giggs is useless in CM, Scholes can do a job, Fletch will still be some time away IF he does make it back, Carrick can do a job also but still should be looking at getting replaced next 1-2 years. We have a team where based on players at the club presently only Clevs has a future past 2 years. I know we have Tunners Petrucci Powell etc but we cannot bank on all of these making it to the top level can we? The way it is going is more covering from non CM's again this season i.e Rafa, Jones etc and this just is not good enough. We are in a shocking state with regard to the CM. We could easily have matched any CM 2 in the world 4 years ago but where they have bought players for this area we are the only team not to have purchased a CMer in that time.

We matched up against a hyped, rejuvinated City team with bags of quality in effectively the title decider with our 'best' midfield and it still included Giggs and Scholes. Oh and we were supposed to be trying to win that game as well? Barca are getting close to the eventual replacing of Xavi and what have they done? Bought a 30m+ Fabregas and now use him somewhere else in the team. On top of that they also have great a youngster who despite signing Fab still wants to stay in Thiago. Madrid have a stockpile of top CMers that they can afford to loan players like Sahin while chasing a 30+m move for Modric. Bayern, City, Juve, AC are all way ahead in the engine room in terms of tactics and personnel. We really need a shake up in the middle not just a purchase of 1 player IMO.

Thats the main reason I have been championing 2 new signings in there. We need new blood as well as talented players that can match up to the worlds best now. We have the youngsters coming through, with the exp of the elders and new signings and a loan or 2 they in 2 years could have replaced Ando, Scholes, Giggs and Carrick.

I fully agree that many are clouded in the belief that SAF promotes youth and the rest. Of our team the most recent first teamer to have come through at our club was Fletch and he is 27. Yes we have bought younger players and made them better players but they were established to certain degrees and we just moulded them which although is still an achievement they cannot be counted as our youth products.

SAF has continually went with what has been tried and tested and as a result we are lining up against young and hungry teams with names rather than a young hungry team of our own. We really need to look at doing something in that area first before anything else.

It is an area of the team that despite the formation it requires the need for quality and energy in there but as a squad we are severely lacking compared to other teams we are supposed to be competeing against.

So yes IMO this is very much a pivotal last 3 weeks of the window. If we do nothing I for one am not holding out much hope for an improvement in play next season.

Jono

Agree2 Disagree0

Well said Keanooh, there are too many supporters who have adopted the "we are United, we will always challenge" attitude.

The squad isn't terrible, but it is clearly lacking in key areas. People have become content with the points tally from last season while ignoring the standard of our performances. I watched nearly every single first team game last season and I don't think anyone else who did can say that they were convinced by the majority of performances.

Welbeck and Cleverly are the last youth player to earn his place in the first team, after that it's Evans, and then Fletcher. We are not churning out a stream of quality young players. One or two make it every couple of years and that's it. That's why we have been buying in young players from other sides. Every crop of youth players are lauded as the new golden generation, and every time only a select few have any chance at the club. And of course we couldn't even hang on to our best youth prospect.

A rot is setting in, in the United team. We are going to see people coming here telling us that Vidic is like a new signing, Fletcher (if he even plays again) is like a new signing, Cleverly is like a new signing. At the same time we chase dead end transfers and leave our midfield without a single regular international.

Danny Pughnited

Agree4 Disagree0

Totally agree Jono. And don't forget a lot of teams are playing 3 in the middle, so what chance have we got with 2 in the middle when one of them is Giggs. Giggs wouldn't have gotten into the centre of midfield in his prime and SAF puts him in there now! It's incredible!
Fletcher should not be included in any midfield count. It will be a bonus if he gets back to fitness.
Ando has got too many chances.
Giggs is past it by 4 years.
Scholes can't last a match.
Carrick is limited but very professional.
Cleverly has yet to prove himself.
Powell, Tunners, etc unproven potential.
In other words - we have no world class players in the most important position on the pitch - as I said earlier, it's incredible.

United need two mid-fielders ! Two dynamic or box to box mid-fielders . Everyone bemoans Berba for slowing our play down !! Carrick and Scholes are pedestrian at best! No disrespect to Carrick and Scholesy , it's just time waits for no man .Let's get back to dominating teams ! Everyone knows games are usually won and lost in the mid-field.

Sir Alex to sign a replacement for Paul Scholes this window. He has recently stated that that it would be very difficult to replace Scholes, why would he say this now, he has said it before, but why now. I think its to keep the pressure off the new signing, probably a young lad with good potential like Ericson.

Believable1 Unbelievable3

The thing with Paul Scholes is that he is 100% irreplaceable, we won't see another player in his role as good as he has been his whole career in the next 50 years.

Been reading the posts on this site for a few years now and it's starting to get bloody frustrating. Not because of City fans trying to wind is up and not because Moura is the latest in a long line of players to apparently turn united down for a big pay day that Fergie is reluctant to offer. The main thing winding me up is people trying to predict how United will play next season and trying to cram players into a 4-4-2. Surely it's been made fairly obvious that that system, although it's worked in the past, is now outdated and ineffective. Modern day football is about possession and teams can only do that with a selection of quality, technical players like Kagawa, Modric or Scholes packing the midfield. Surely Spain at the Euros showed us all how a game can be dominated with quality midfield players. I don't want to seem patronising but people need to wake up an realise that 4-4-2 is almost dead, especially in the champions league. I honestly think united's best line up would be a 4-2-3-1 and that United only need to go to Celtic and spend about £20 million to complete what would be a very strong squad. I welcome any comments.

Matt

I think united have been playing either 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 depending on who we are playing for a few years now

I agree, truly pathetic behaviour and makes us United fans seem bitter. My favourite though, was Alexis Sanchez. For MONTHS, certain posters were hyping this kid, bigging him up, he's gonna light up OT, the Chilean Miners were a sign he's en route to the Theatre of Dreams etc.

Then he signs for Barca, and;

"Where's the proof we were EVER interested? If we were interested, we'd have bid and he'd be at OT"

Absolutely pathetic.

With Lucas Moura looking likely to sign for PSG now it's likely we will turn our attentions to Modric. IMO he is a better player and more worth the money. Lucas IMO is a money grabber and another overrated Brazilian who wouldn't live up to his hype. Been fairly anonymous in the Olympics team, not worth £30+ million. Let him go to PSG and get Modric

Every one keeps talking about moura and rvp. That will cost 50m+. I wouldn't mind a left back which we all agree we need before these 2 signings. I would like to see a cm but not sure it will happen. So I won't give any names. One player I do like and would like to see here is Mexican fabian. Now iv seen him a few times and this kid is good. I'd say a better all round player than hernandez. He would also be cheap with a 10m left back leaves money for a cm.

I am 90% sure Moura will sign for us:
1. Fergie is up to something big.
2. I have met him and asked him about United, he didn't answer but just looked at me and smiled.
3. He knows he will get gametime with us and Fergie's rotating squads.
4. He prefers us to PSG.

IMO Van Persie (if he signs) isn't just because of his raw talent, but it also attracts players, as SAF can then say to Moura 'you can now play behind Rooney and RVP' sounds a very attractive offer, and it also shows that we can still compete in the market, which we always have been, we are just smart with our money. I expect RVP to either sign a new contract for Arsenal by the end of this week, or sign for us by the end of next week. I also expect Moura to sign for us within a week of the Olympics finishing.
