I am not saying this is what will happen but I would love if it did. Sneider and Javi Martinez would solve all our problems in midfield. Sneider would get forward and link up with rooney + hernandez/welbeck and martinez would sit in midfield and pass the ball around. With Nani, Young and Valencia available on the wings that would give us huge power going forward to get goals and kill games off which has been a problem. Also the young lads like Cleverley, Morrison and Pogba would learn alot from these top players. Also I think we need to get a left back to replace Evra. He has been great for the club but the last two seasons he has been poor.

Waoh! 3-2 wasn't a true reflection today boys. Should have been 3-3 at the end, but I suppose it papers over the cracks a bit for a while. Look how Citeh dominated at OT after Jonny boy got sent off after HT & look how Man Utd tried their hardest to throw it away with a man advantage for near on 80 mins. On top of that Fergie throws on his new signing, Paul Scholes! He's taking the pee out of you Utd fans. You can't be serious! Scholes was great in his day, but he hardly played before he retired, now he's the short term answer to your midfield problems. I hope to god he plays against Liverpool lol. Shocking, absolutely shocking! I hear Roy Keane has still got a pair of boots. Come to think of it, so have I!

Even though we are out of CL and CC but this season is turning out to be the most exciting one in recent years.
A very average squad, comeback win in Community Shield, Great start to the season, dip in form, thrashed by rivals, out of two tournaments, back to scoring goals, 2 unlikely defeats, defeat city at home and now drawn Pool. All the makings of a blockbuster movie and there's still plenty more to come.

Lol what a match. It really was a game of 2 halves and 1 that ended up giving me more worries. I know if everyone had said would you take a 3-2 win before the match every united fan would of jumped at it but definitely it left me feeling like we had lost our no 1 spot.

Look at that 2nd half performance alone. 10 men consisting of 7/8 defensive minded players were able to beat us 2-0. Tactics wise we were outplayed and our players were mostly outclassed. From the exception of Vidic and maybe another we played our best players today and frankly we looked rubbish once mancini sorted out his team. Yes if we could of got that penalty it would of helped things but its only papering over the cracks.

Also I'm sorry to say it and i don't want to burst peoples bubbles but Paul Scholes should never of came back. Last season he was hardly outstanding and then to bring him after 6 months out of the top flight football was a poor call. He slowed us down, gave away possession too often and struggled to hit any long range passes. I really hate to say it but scholesy was a legend and this is destroying his wonderful legacy.

At the end of day yeah lets be thankful we through to the next round but again issues were raised and i bet come next round more will be needed to be raised again but there is problem at our club and i doubt we can fix it atm.

People are talking about players they would like to see when we eventually leave Scholes a moment of peace. I'm still well behind Hazard being our new creative force, I was watching Lille the other night, he was absolutely brilliant, reminds me of Ronaldinho a bit. The only thing I would say is that he looks a bit small and shied away from tackles a small bit, but I imagine that would be easily learned.

I think rooney was excellant 2day and i just hope the press lay off him now!coz lets be honest he in my eyes has been lacking confidence and with getting 2 away goals at city i dont think there can be any better confidence booster!people will say we were lucky with the red but i didnt see kompany do much complaining??if nani wouldnt of jumped he would still be looking for his ankle now!but its the result that matters and it proves that no matter wot even after 2 defeats and every1 riting us off we r MANCHESTER UNITED and will rise to thr occasion now lets push on n hope to get players back and a good end to the season

Now that the dust has settled from the game and draw I have a couple of questions....
What do people really think of Scholes returning?? Personally I still think he can do a job for us but I'm a bit dissapointed that we have to rely on a legend to come out of retirement.
And who do people think the target is who's not yet available?? It's anyone's guess but I have to believe we do have a target (maybe its more hoping), I think it could still be Sneijder but I'm hoping it's Modric.... HERBIE

I may be being over optmisitic hear but i really think that this win will send us on a good run and City will stutter. Esepcially if Liverpool can do the business midweek. Right now City have the Toure's away, Barry and Kompany suspended and Dzeko, Balotelli injured. Thats a large proportion of their squad out and i think in some games that will really effect them and they could drop points.

We on the other hand are only going to get stronger, Cleverly will come back, the Da Silva's should both be fit soon. And other players like Anderson are coming back to peak fitness. Things are looking up i think!

I'd be interested to read what other posters and Eds think whether or not we will sign a new midfielder after Scholes coming out of retirement. It could mean that, just like SAF has been saying, the CM we want isn't available. I'm not entirely sure of this though. From what I have read and heard it seems as if Scholes was missing playing for us and asked SAF whether he would consider taking him back. From SAF's point of view it is a bit of a no-brainer with only having to pay his wages. If the latter is the case then I think we could still be in for a midfielder this Jan, but we will see.

I'm looking forward to the game at anfield, we've played better away this year then we've played at home. Beating them in their own back yard would be so sweet. I am amazed at the number of liverpool fans on here before the draw, anyone would think their fixated on us or something. lol. If we win within minutes they're on here telling us how lucky we were and how the ref won it for us and if we lose or draw they're on here predicting the end of us and how we won't win the league again for 20 odd years and that we'll be stuck in midtable forever more......on second thought maybe these clowns know a thing or two about that. lol.

We did well today, in the first half at least and then we let them back into it. But besides that there were very promising signs which can only get better when Cleverly et al are back.

I think the whole bring Scholes back is a really good idea, as long as he is used wisely - i dont think he was the player to bring on in todays game though however. It does show us that the central midfield problem will wait until summer however.

In summer i think Ozil is the man we are waiting for, as well as a CB. Berbatov and Owen will have left by then i think and Macheda may not come back - i hope he does and comes good though. Erick Torres is the only striker i can see being brought in.

If Ozil comes in then i think Rooney will be put up top as a proper striker with Ozil behind him in many games. Behind him will be a midfield of Cleverly and Anderson of someone like Jones. Jones will be used as a RB or CM for now until he takes over from Vidic. For that reason i think until Jones learns his trade better a CB will come in.

In january " RIGHT PLAYER ISNT AVAILABE" and in the summer when all other big clubs also buying " NO VALUE IN THE MARKET" poem wil come.
come on SAF stop fooling us fans.. and one more thing my request if any1 can pass it to fergie... Evra is becoming aweful day by day.. find a strong lad to cover him or ask him to stay back and do main duty that is defending.. evry goal been conceded Evra is involved somewhere.. he was good not anymore.

Thats never a sending off, refs favouring utd to much just like newcastle daint get a pen and webb gave everything to them

If you say rules are rules why was evra not sent of for touching the ref as he was on a yellow as you are not supposed to according to the rules

you cant have it both ways

Watch how City get screwed with decisions in the coming weeks, it happens all the time

Great result today but with scholesy comin back prob shows we got problems coming ahead&have we got the money to sort it out,its screaming out for a world class midfielder now&hopefully we can get Clev as he was beginning of season or it may mean need 2 midfielders as what utd have now is a joke, it looks more&more if this should be Rios last season,ok Vidic,Smalling,Jones but Evans is shocking!up front there's the obvious berba may aswell be packed off he's gettin dropped as useless when needed to fight for it,Diouf&Kiko can be sent out on loan as many times as we want but they jus don't look like gonna make it so its also another forward required&do we have the cash?? Modric would fit in like a dream but spurs are wanting crazy money&yes for all the crazy talk if Torres was available at a decent deal I'd take him as think he would fire at OT,Need players who have shown can do it in premier or of that top class can step straight in&do it!

I like Wellbeck looks a really good player, but you have to put this win in perspective. You were playing 10 MEN for christs sake! Any neutral fan would have to say that was not a red card against Kompany, he won the ball and DIDNT touch Nani ???....funny how United always manage to get a major player sent off when there is a crucial game on...remember Gerard, Mascherano etc.....

We are not paranoid, but guys this is becoming a little bit too coincidental. Something is seriously not right with this sport.....United should be able to win without help, but they dont appear to be able to against the big boys anymore. Virtually every game United are getting all the major decisions in their favour. If Newcastle hadnt ripped you to shreds, Im sure your 12th man in that game would have swung it somehow...

ps thought Scholes was the best player you had today, so well done to him...didnt look at all out of place, a class player

ok, here's an interesting question for you, taking SAF at his word and assuming good health he could be here for 3 more yrs, if we were to bring in replacement as no.2 to work under fergie to ease transition, adjust to utd life etc and help out on the tactical side (something phelan is blatantly not doing) who would you think would be likely to come in this sort of role?
i know Mourinho is the media's front runner, but i dont think he is a long term option, guadiola (spelling) would be a better choice but i dont know how good he really is, my 6yr old son could win with barca right know so what do you all think of him?

Torres and Milijas have been shown red cards for a lot less than what Kompany did today. And those are just two off the top of my head. If Nani doesn't jump out of the way, he could have broken an ankle, as SAF pointed out. Foy will get a lot of the headlines, but we shouldn't forget which team was 1-0 up after ten minutes.
After SAF got his first half tactics spot on, the team let him down in the second. Kolarov's goal was stunning, but Richards shouldn't have won the free kick off Evra. Evra, Ferdinand and Jones all had poor games, but in fairness to Jones, I don't think he was 100% fit. Valencia reminded everyone how good he can be if he's allowed to play as a RW. If Foy had given the penalty for the blatant foul on Toni, I'm sure the lads would have put a few more past City.

Good comments from Fergie after the game, love listening to his pre/post-match analysis. I think it's one of the things that makes him a great manager. But he's right, we were sloppy, we can't be that sloppy in future or we will throw games away.

Why does everyone (i.e. pundits) keep talking about how good City were? Like Sir Alex said we made them look better than they were at getting back into it. Anyone would think the fought back to a draw, pretty sure it's us in the next round and not them. And little mention of our blatant pen turned down. And I think it was a correct red card. The media... Sigh.

Scholes was a passenger, not really at all happy with him back.

The red card was stupid, Carrick and Evra could get a red too if Foy followed the way he did to Kompany.

Crap 2nd half, stupid mistakes in defence, yes, we're in the next round but don't call the ref to this game please.

We won and I'm happy but as always when comes to subs SAF is something else. Y take Nani when was having a good game and leave Giggs??????

get in through to the next round and city out. My thoughts are that to bring scholes out of retirement is embarrassing, we were a disgrace in the second half I feel sorry for jones and rooney when you see anderson come on and be bone idle he moved about 10 yards all game while they run around for 90 minutes, good thing is he wont be seen for a while, and valencia needs to work on his left foot as it's non existent.
And the refree was appalling very biased towards city how valencia didnt get a penalty when kolorav brought him down is ridiculous, that ref was terrible.

An excellent win for us today. Of course a disappointed second half and it would have been nice to score 5 or 6, but we went and won 8/9 (I think) after that happened to us so I wouldn't be too concerned about that.

The second half was ruined by Kolarov's freekick. I think after then United just wanted to keep possession and not go for the throat. The ref bottled it at 3.1 when we had another stonewall penalty, should have been 4.1, not 3.2. Then Foy getting in the way of a United break and giving the possession back to City with 30 secs to go. The ref hasn't handed us this game, he nearly took it from us. If it went 4.1, the score could have been anything after that.

Hopefully we can get a nice easy draw in the next round so Pogba & Morrison can get a game. Glad to see Rooney come out and put an end to this speculation as nonsense, his words, not mine.

This is an absolute joy to watch, and i'm pleased to see Scholes back on the bench. He'll be a good addition for 6 months - but i think that says for definate that we won't but this January as the player we want isn't available. He'll come in the sumemr though im sure - whoever it may be. But on this performance if we play like this then we wil lget our 20th title without doubt - authority and energy describes this performance.

ed, it says on spn that rooney scored from a pen for his 2nd but he missed the pen and scored the rebound so does that still count as a pen ? {Ed007's Note - I wouldn't have thought so but a few places are listing it as a pen?????}

Let us spare a thought for all those poor Liverpool fans who have decided to support City for a day. Its bad enough that their own team are pants and on the day they change alllegences they are served up with this delightful performance by the men in blue. Hard luck.

Playing with much more energy, and looking much more up for it. Nani looks confident and Valencia's crossing is world class. That's where United are strong, counter-attacking and wing-play, and that's something that's gone out of the window a bit this season as confidence has dropped. But we have done a thorough job of taking City apart after the red, should be four up. Hope we keep it up in the second half, 6 would be nice, but if they get an early goal second half I'll be biting my nails.

BBC Radio 5 live pundit Robbie Savage on Vincent Kompany's dismissal at the Etihad Stadium: "He's won the ball. It was not malicious and he's not touched Nani. For me that is not a red card. The referee has got to use common sense. Should have been a yellow card at best." {Ed007's Note - We have a word in Scotland, bawbag. Sums up Savage perfectly.}

Lindegaard; Smalling, Jones, Ferdinand, Evra; Valencia, Carrick, Giggs, Nani; Welbeck Rooney. Subs: De Gea, Evans, Rafael, Scholes, Anderson, Hernandez, Park.

Interesting, I thought both Smalling and Evans were a week or two away from fitness. Also i'd have gone with De Gea as he's the better shot stopper where as Lindegaard is better at dealing with the more physical nature of english football, and if i was a betting man i'd say it's more likely that against this current city side it'll be more important to be a good shot stopper rather than being strong enough to take a battering. I worry about having Giggs in the middle an think it would have been better to start with a three man Midfield and have Anderson starting in for Welbeck and keep it tight until the second half then bring on Welbeck to open the game up in the last half an hour.

Does the 25 man squad given to the fa in august apply only for pl or fa cup also?
And does it have to be submitted again in january?
And was scholes in it ?

well, Doesn't this just scream desperation.

I love Scholes and he can easily get a job done for us week in, week out. BUT as a club, are we really in that position where we can't afford to bring ANYBODY in at all? I don't believe the rubbish about targets not being available either. If we want someone bad enough we would be able to get them. simple as that.

I'm not saying this wasn't a good thing, but it just shows the financial situation we're in and that instead of trusting in the future we're going back to the past. Why not play Pogba? let him show that he's worth the contract he's asking for. Really does bemuse me.

He'll most likely sign a 1 year extension at the end of the year too.

Oh, and I don't buy into the statement that he asked to come back. It seems funny that HE wants to come back even though it's our midfield that's gone to pot.

I'm glad he's back, but if we're looking at him to be our leader instead of simply playing back up then we really are in trouble.

wow how embarrassing, bringing a retired player out of retirement cos the current players we have are no good.

if this doesn't strengthen the case that we have no money to spend on a top player then surely nothing will.

i think we should get behind rooney aswell, he knows more about the club than us and if he thinks we lack ambition then we should believe him cos like i said he knows what goes off at the club more than we do.

Belated Happy New Year Greetings from a Spurs Fan who comes in peace (we secretly like MU for p-ing off Arse in the past before they became a 1 man team and we also liked you stopping Chelscum buying more trophies) am sure you must realise now your CM badly needs reinforcing, would prob get lynched for letting on this but Sandro would beef up your MF no end, he's box 2 box, winning mentality and has a bit of skill. Danilele de Rossi would also be a great if expensive signing. This might sound like heresy to you but dont think flogging Roo would be as disastrous as you lot think, C7 and Eric were both better, more influential players and you came back stronger after selling them, (ok, maybe not so much C7, as an outsider when he left some of your fear factor did as well) You're not gonna get Modric or Bale (not with the Glazers in charge) so think some imaginative transfer dealings required on your part (also think Tiote would improve your Cm)

Okay, so none of us can actually say we know the team for tomorrow. this is my prediction;

------------------DDG------------------
Twin--------Rio------Jones--------Fryers
---Valencia---Carrick---Park---gibson---Nani
------------------Welbeck

Bench; 1) Anders 2) Thorpe 3) giggs 4) Rooney 5) Pogba 6) Berbatov 7) Diouf.

If we only get 7 subs then scrap the last two :).

I think we'll go with Park 'creating' and supporting Welbeck, Carrick and Gibson providing the defensive duties to an extent and as usual massive wing play.
