We will win the league what does that say about the state of the Premiership? It was the same last year and everyone of us said in the summer we needed a creative midfielder to open up teams. Did you see our starting midfield tonight. I have been banging on about passing the ball backwards and sitting back inviting teams on well tonight was the perfect example of allowing a team to push up on us. WAKE UP and see what the Glazers are doing World class players sold and the best youth we have sold and not replaced with top drawer quality. i am still not that sure Fergie cares if we get knocked out with the semi being played just before the derby. Remember he is always looking at the big picture. I do pity the Liverpool supporters who have nothing better to do on a Thursday night than to watch us and spend time on our site. I AM KLOOT

Does anybody agree rooney is a shadow of his former self? He is so lethargic compared to his old energetic displays, there seems to be no urgency from him! Also since the season he scored 38 goals as a striker he has not played that role consistently when it is proven thats his best position!! why change something good!!

GPoT 7 , sydney

yesterday u said u wern't jealous of barcas youth cos we hav some of the best in europe i.e. jones, smalling, welbeck, cleverly. all of which i agree are good and have potential but are highly overrated. today showed how much we lack technical players against a team who r 5th in the spanish league who played us off the park. when ppl start sayin our young players r with 30-40 mil pounds then ill say there some of the best in europe like gotze, martinez, munian, eriksen.
And yes we are decline some1 said yesterday how are we declining? we are course to hit 90point mark in the league, well we r punchin way above r weight and that was proven against totenham wen we wer destroyed yet luckily won again that shudnt be mistaken for winning mentality as today was proven. And if it wasnt for the ref who needed to redeem the no boot situation we wud be going into 2nd tie needing to score 3 goals. Tonight was 1 of the worst performances iv seen of rooney, not interested at all.

And sydney ravel and pogba wudn't walk into that barca youth team, if they could then id be really worried why we left both go and no give them the chance there talent deserved.

Right well that was interesting and i'll do my best to pick the bones out of it.

First off you have to give credit to Bilbao, they got their team selection spot on they got thier tactic's spot on they all did their jobs brilliantly and their played their hearts out with a passion that just has to be admired. So fair play to them.

Now thats out of the way lets dive into where it went wrong for us. In Europe this year we have been very poor and i attribute this to three main reasons.

First the obvious one, our midfield isn't upto scratch, their are a couple of componants missing, we have the work rate but we are missing a tactical type player to move the ball around and dictate play, could that be Cleverley? yes it could be but we need someone else similar to add depth to the squad and competition. We are also missing a goal threat from midfield, someone our wingers can pull the ball back to rather than just whipping in the cross. I don't think we need a blood and thunder type player as football has moved on abit and is more cultured than that now but we certainly need someone who can sweep up and stop us being so open in the middle.

Secondly we need to have a more settled team or at the very least the team need to know who's playing and where much earlier in the week so they can prepare properly for it. All this chopping and changing and playing players out of position isn't helping the players or the team.

Thirdly and most importantly we need someone who is tactically astute, the players don't look like they have a real plan or what they should be trying to do. Look how Bilbao moved the ball around with purpose and poise, they all knew what they were doing and they stuck to it. Sir Alex is a brilliant man manager but can still be tactically naive, and in europe that stands out much more than it does domestically.

The things we can take out of this game are that Rooney needs to be playing further up the pitch as he lacks the mentality to play further back, if he was playing 20-25 yards further forward then the midfield would have more space and we could stretch teams more.
Lots of people have jumped on Rafael's back for the mistake he made in not following up De Gea's save but other than that he had Muinian in his pocket all night and was superb going forward so don't be too quick to judge.
De Gea wa outstanding and is really starting to show his class now.
Giggs should never play in a midfield two again.
Jones will be a top class centre back but only ever a decent midfielder as he lacks the technique and tactical awearness to play in a top midfield(the only reason he looks good for us shows how poor our midfield is).
We stiil need a top left footed player on the left.

So if we bring in a CM a LW and a AM/SS in the summer and get a new more tactically awear assistant manager then i think we would be in great shape.

Sir Alex! Just pay Athletic Bilbao whatever they want. Get Martinez & Muniain to United this summer. These two are exactly what we need in the midfield. I suppose 40-50 Million should do and they are definitely worth it.

We might have lost tonight, but at least we aren't Liverfool, lagging in 7th place with an even poorer midfield than ours and a paranoid manager who doesn't know his @rse from his elbow.

united were yet again outplayed. However I really dont know what fergie and mike phelan were thinking in playing a 4-4-2 with giggs and jones in the middle against a 4-3-3 that presses high up the pitch (and did so for 90+mins), and retains possession so well. For me this was a game made for carrick, anderson, and scholes from the beginning. When you play teams like this you have to build play with patience, and we played gung ho from the off..its no wonder a) we conceded so much possession and b) our passing was sloppy.

The way in which athletic club bilbao passed the ball with neat short triangles was reminiscent of how barca played against us in champions league final. A year on from this and we still dont have a solution.

last point, David de Gea will be a world class keeper,

Outplayed tonight, lucky against spurs, time for some players to be sold, as they r not good enough. We seem unable to defend, partly due to some defenders r rubbish, and relying on a 37 and 38 year old in midfield, good as they r come on SAF open your eyes, you stay on top by spending when you are on top.

08 Mar 2012 22:51:58
Well... Lucky won't be in our side forever right? It was coming Norwich, Spurs but today was really clear that A Bilbao exposed United and I can't wait for the stupid excuses from SAF. I don't know who's going to be the victim, The Ref, the pitch, the weather, I don't know but for sure something like: We got a great players and a great squad... Bulls***t

Cristal, Basle, Benfica, Blackburn, City and now A.B looks like Old Trafford is no longer a fortress for us this season it also can mean that we may loose few points in the upcoming games at home and again we may lost the last chance for silverware.

Its not impossible to win 0-2 in Spain but with this current form we ain't going nowhere.

Its a real crucial time of the season, we're not in position to rest the squad in Euro if we only have to trophies to fight for. Is real clear to see our deficit, nobody needs to talk about it again. No money, no trophies and only looks like the beginning.

Really enjoyable game. We were sloppy with our passing, but as a United supporter, I must admit that Bilbao were excellent. Quick, incisive and creative, in fact a pleasure to watch.
Although the English media would have you believe otherwise, La liga is far superior in terms of quality to the EPL. It is no coincidence that Spain are the reigning World and European champions.
Well done to them, and to their supporters who were fantastic.

Yes, we lost. Yes they were the better team and deserved their win ( even though 2 of their goals were not exactly legit ). Yes we played like crap most of the times but, as always i choose not to get devastated by this and concentrate on the good stuff ( and their were a couple ) . Now this is what i noticed :
-David De Gea : awesome performance, could have done better for the 2nd goal and the 3rd goal was a misunderstandin with rafael . Best player in united this match.
-Rafael : was troubled by the pace and trickery of munian, not his best game by far and the one to blame for the 3rd goal . But showed why he is at manchester united with a lot of hardwork throught the match .
-Evans : proving all the doubters wrong and was let down by jones on more than one occasion . His lack of pace is alarming though. Average performance.
-Smalling : could have done better for the first and was troubled by the flow of their attacking play. Dealt fairly well with the physicality of llorente
-Evra : was at fault fot the first and lost possession numerous times. Bad performance , should have been replaced.
-Jones : showed that he is still 20 years old and it was a woeful performance: got overrun in the midfield and was responsible for the first and the second to some degree. The kid gotta have a stable position : he is lost .
-giggs : was not breaking up their play which was putting more burden on jones and later carrick. Didnt misplace as many passes as before.
-young : a shadow throughout. lost possession and misplaced passes, mediocre game.
-park : chasing the ball like a dog chasiing its tail, but not as intensly as in the past, woeful first touch, he was probably the worst performer on the pitch ( or argubly jones )
-rooney : wasnt really fit, below average performance
-chicharito: without his usual finishing abilities and misplaced passes, lots of them but on the bright side he is guetting better at dribbling and his ball control is improving . needs to work on his build up play though.
-anderson : assured performance, broke up a couple of dangerous looking attacks and was assured in possession and made himself available, i hope he can get a good run of games to show his worth
-carrick : average
-Nani : apart from 1 good pass, he s**t his pants
overall a crappy performance ! we needed a cleverley/scholes type of player to dictate the play, guess its down to our n*2

We have consistently managed to make opposition teams look like Barcelona this season, it seems anybody can pass their way directly through the centre of our midfield. Not wanting to post a knee- jerk reaction straight after the defeat, but that was a very humbling 90 mins. Cannot see how the club is going forward, no sign of the highest calibre of players coming through the youth system, nor being bought in. Laboured, workman like performances to win matches is not what the clubs worldwide reputation has been built on. Need to instill that flair, and passion combined with some aggressive toughness back into the team, or alternatively master the patient technical style of play of the Spanish teams.

Well after tonights game I hope we can put a few things to bed and make a few more clear (and non of this is motd fever)

1. For me Phil Jones is NOT a defensive midfielder. He is a defender who can play at CB or RB. Also I think the hype around him needs to calm down now. The lad has hit a level and if we had Vidic and Rio fully fit, we could allow him some time off.

2. What has happened to Evra? He is invisible at the back, and at times in the 2nd half Rooney was further back than he was.

3. Why put out top goal scorer left midfield when we needed to score goals?

4. Rafael? Sorry but imo simply not good enough for United and I would like to see him moved on in the summer.

5. How much longer are we going to put up with this shocking midfield? Tonight our best midfielder (imo) was Giggs! He is 38 ffs! We had Jones, Park, Young, Anderson, Nani and Rooney all in there at one point and not one of them looked any good. I fear we will sign no one of note in the summer as we simply do not have the money.

6. And lets be honest we were played off the park tonight so hats off to Athletic as they were by far the better team. They were faster, hungrier, sharper, and just better in every department. I have to say that I think that this is the worst United side I have seen in the last 20 years and with these owners that does not bode well for the future.

7. DE GEA WAS SUPERB TONIGHT THOUGH!

Well what can i saw about today's match?
Absolutey outplayed by athletic!!
Fergie again show disrespect for the opposing team, why would he play a midfield of giggs and jones?or park as a winger?...
Chicharito was poor today, really poor touches
evra was having a nightmare game today..shocking!!
Young really impressed along side de gea.
Our failing to buy a cm during the summer and january is really hunting us
players like turan, diego, witsel, defour, kagawa and vidal were avaliable...all cheap
theres something going on in the backroom that we as fans aren't aware of.
We still have a chance to win next week

So the chickens have come home to roost

Again, again and again, Basel, City, Palace, Benfica, Ajax, Blackburn and now Bilbao.

I dont really need to analyse that performance do I but we have nothing to worry about do we Sydney. Everything is fine. The club is in good ownership, the manager has refined our club tactics and bought players to maximise them, whilst developing and retaining the finest youth in Europe.

The club is at a crossroads, believe in Sydney or believe in what your eyes tell you is in front of you, on the pitch , in the bank , in the assistant managers office and in the boardroom.

Please stop giving my fellow scot Queen Alex so much stick.
I think he has transformed your team with some excellent signings such as Carrick, De Gea, Anderson and Rafeal.

Really dissapointed with the game so far. Not really getting a foothold in midfield and the widemen keep running into trouble. Biggest let down is that this is the first time I have seen a lack in mobility from Jones, he just isn't covering the ground he should in midfield. Keeps getting drawn out wide or up top.

My take on Martinez so far today - very much in a similar vein of player as Carrick but bit quicker and more direct - would be a great buy.

To fiinish on a positive, this is probably the best I have seen Giggs play over a 45 minute period so far this year.

Fair enough TK mate. I think we need a quality right winger and a finisher (2 if Suarez leaves) to secure a place in the top 4 and go from there. I think we will also sign some squad players who may even step up too, like Matty Phillips at Blackpool and we will be pretty well set. I'd give the kids a go if we are only in the Europa, the likes of Flannagan, Robinson, Shelvey, Coates plus the older "youth" like Coady and the squad players who need a game, like Henderson and Adam. Its not a competion I like at all, however its still a European trophy and whilst you are in it you've got to go for it but certainly not risking your League standing.
On your squad I think you need a couple of real top quality players, players who can win a game on there own, the only player you really have to do that IMO is Rooney. A left footed winger and an Oezil type player is what you need, not that I think you have that sort of money to spend. You are 1-0 up now, congrats.

Sydney!"
There we go again, how many times do you want to mention us? Closet fan? If you are you would know we are two players away from being big players, a RM and a finisher, put Valencia and Hernandez in our team and we would be challenging. Reina, Kelly, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique, Lucas, Gerrard, Suarez and Bellamy are all great players we are just 2 players short IMO.

Back off Disney mate, let's just say you certainly aren't my type :-) I think you'd have more of a chance with Blair lol.The reason you imparticular are the main part of my post is because you are the main culpurate for bringing and talking about LFC non stop, and all your little followers like GDS believe everything you say and they need to stop for your own good.

Got bored so I had flick through the posts on here, Disney talking incorrectly about his favourite topic LFC again and getting it all wrong, and being put in his place by Ed 001 only for 'GDS' to say Ed 001 was incorrect and Disney must be right! Lol. Ed 001 the most reliable Ed for player matters on LFC or Disney a bitter manc who gets his "info" out of a paper or off Twitter, who to believe? I was fed up of this side of the "banter" but some of the things that get said about us on here need pulling up. Disney said Meireles was LFC's best player last season you couldn't be anymore wrong. And I thought I'd find you all talking about your game tonight. Instead more about us and I AM KLOOT doing what he always does, moaning and feeling sorry for himself. Should be a decent match tonight Bilbao have some fantastic players, but good luck I'm not bitter like some of you appear to be.

Please explain Ed's why Blaire and his boys are allowed on here to say whatever they like and yet whenever I say anything about liverpools behaviour or that of its supporters you do not print it. Double standards me thinks. I also think you need to look up banter and what it means. I AM KLOOT {Ed002's Note - God you are getting paranoid - are you sure you are not a Liverpool supporter? I understand what banter means but there are those that cannot distinguish between banter and abuse. When Blair gets a little too saucy, cusses or uses an overtly misarticulate way of expressing himself, then his posts get cut as well. There is a secondary issue of poor quality banter - and much gets cut because of that. I would also say that considerably more "banter" from Liverpool fans gets cut than from Manchester United fans. This is due mainly to the reasons I have already given: (a) cannot tell banter from abuse; (b) profanity; or (c) poor quality banter. Write something fun and humorous and I will be pleased to post it. Remember, I am neither a Manchester United nor Liverpool fan, so the bias argument doesn’t hold up. I am also the only one who has worked out the anagram in your name and I have of course let that go so far - with only the two of us knowing what you really mean. I hope this helps.}

i wouldnt worry about pogba leaving i wont mind as long as we buy xhaka who is a year older but imo twice as good. also tunniclffe to get promoted to first team and buy a more experienced player 20 plus not too old though i would personally like ganso i think he is better than gotze and erikson and the other names that get mentioned on here. i would also like petrucci, lingaard, will keane and cole to go out on loan in the championship but not below that level because i think lower than that quite often ruins a player like brandy and ajose who i thought looked good prospects but it never happened. i know a lot of you think a lot of pogba he is good but imo you cant rave about a player until the start puting decent performances in the first team because reserve football in this country i think is at a very low standard and is something that needs to be looked at by the FA. pogba didnt break into the first team because he didn't train good enough or impress SAF to put him above players like park and giggs in the pecking order okay maybe thrown him into a couple of games may of helped but it didnt happen. i think the low number of appearances was down to the fact his has been stalling on a deal at united loyalty gets reward look a nanis new contract offer. all pogba had to was sign a new contract he would of got game time got better got in the first team maybe then a pay rise but he just seems very impatient and SAF likes being patient with youngsters.

I thought I'd move onto tonight's game as a topic of conversation.

It's no secret that we've been reasonably poor at holding onto a lead this season and Bilbao have the types of player which can punish us, Llorente, Muniain and Martinez are the ones we like to talk about. the two which I think we're ignoring are;

1) Toquero, he hasn't scored bags of goals for them but from what I remember seeing of him he has scored some important ones.

2) Susaeta is another to be wary of, him and Martinez link up perfectly together and the fact that he scored 2 at the weekend may give him a confidence boost to get one or two against us.

Now, I'm confident that we'll come a way with decent score line to see us through, 2-0 or 3-0 but IF they are to trouble us I think it'll be from one Toquero, Susaeta, Llorente, Muniain or Martinez.

Looking forward to the game though. hopefully it'll be a quality tie.

P.S - on the Pogba side of things, people are saying Barcelona are giving the likes of Dos Santos a go, Milan are playing El Shaarawy on the regular, Dortmund started Gotze at 18, etc. but we're playing in a league that relies on physicality to win you games. We have to wait until they're the right build and size to play them without concern..Now Pogba and Ravel aren't the smallest of lads but that's the difference between the aforementioned and the EPL's lads.

its simple really and i dont care what anyone says.....end of the day there can only be one person to blame and that is fergie.......

its time fergie called it a day, and made that move upstairs.....there has been numerous times this season where his team selections have made everyone go wtf.....and its cost us points and places in other competitions that we are now out off......

because of fergies arrogance, he wouldnt listen to the cries of the fans who knew that players like pogba and morrison were oozing for a first team try out, especially considering for near 4 months our midfield was near championship material.....like seriously tho look at the central midfield we had over november/december months.....a 38 year old ryan giggs.....rafael a rb......ji no more lungs park.......and michael carrick who has fair enough done a solid enough job......

fair enough morrison had his troubles but who seriously cares as long as united get their results.....i know its not the right message to be sending out to people i.e. if your a ghetto gangster from da hood u can still play for manchester united (but make sure to leave your guns and knives in your momma's cookie jar before coming to training or matches) but for pogba, fergie has NO excuse.....anytime pogba has played he has had the midfield more or less in the back of his pocket and that includes matches for france that he has been involved with...

people say in fergie we trust and fergie knows best........all the lad wanted was some friggin playing time with the first teamers to show what he could do..........but no fergie was too arrogant and played players out of position or nearly past their playing days instead, which in turn cost us results left right and centre this season........seriously though im starting to question it all now....i did have faith in fergie before but over the past couple of weeks (well for most of this season if im honest) iv been thinking about it a lot recently......

on another note people say united are ballsing up because of tactics and that mike phelan isnt up for the job....and that carlos queriez should be reinstated.....

so basically what people are saying is whenever it comes to tactics, fergie obviously doesnt have a clue???

that simply isnt good enough for a team like man united......

surely the boss is the one who shud know best for tactics, management etc......and then some input from a right hand man obviously helps here and there....

so what would fergie do if he didnt have an assistant manager in place to tell him how to do his job right?

is it just me or am i thinking too much into things???

sick of reading about pogba , money etc, cant wait for the game tonight.
a lot of players names have been mentioned for future signings , we saw erikson last week and while he is a good player and will prob become a very good player im sure how much he would improve our first 11 at the moment.
tonight llorinte and martinez are up and this might be a good chance to see how true fergys crack about cows in fields is.
I think they will come and have a go tonight so i'm looking forward to a good game

ok so we have lost are 2 brightest talents (or so I keep hearing)in pogba and morrison I honestly don't know how good they are but this concerns me, not because they are tipped to be future superstars but because they have choosen to leave us, a team that has been, for the last 2 decades the best and most consistent team in England and best English team in Europe by far! so my question is WHY? I don't buy into the idea that its the agents fault! they were free to make their own decisions! and you would think that any good young player would want a chance to play first team football for us! so could someone explain to me why we can't hold onto our top youth because it is really worrying in my opinion! thanks!

Podolski fee is £10.3m, but wages are £140k a week, but the wages will have come with a sizable signing on fee. So perhaps he will be paid £110k a week and he will receive £6m upfront.

I have a real buzz about tonight lads, I think it's going to be a great game. I'm really looking forward to seeing Bilbao play aswell. You reckon we could get another Cruyff, Blomqvist, Ronaldo situation on our hands if one of their players runs us into the ground?! who knows.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to record the match as I have training for my Sunday League team at 8 (typical), but come on lads, let's get behind the team tonight instead of berating them when they do something wrong!

How about Steven Jovetic in place of Kagawa? He can play as LW also as a SS/AM. Plus has been in good form this season and has scored goals against strong teams in Serie A like Juventus , Roma , Lazio , Udinese..!

Though i don't go on statistic. the lad has been tremendous since his return from injury.
App- 21 , Goals- 12 Assist- 2

Its a shame he signed a new contract till 2016 with Viola. It will take anything 20+ M to get him. But the lads class.

How can SAF claim there's no value in the market, when arsenal have got podolski for 11 million?

He would have been perfect. Only 26 a good 5 years + service. Proven goalscorer. And can be used on the left wing and a striker.

I am of the belief that Fergie has no funds.

so all our young players are leaving for bigger pay brackets. This all falls down to what Ronney did by holding the club to ransome. These young players would have looked up to him and saw what he did now many think it ok for them to do it. Rooney should have been sent through the exit door as soon as he did what he did. This seems to have bred a a group of players who think they can hold the club to ransome just as he did.

You can't pay an 18 y/o player who's never started a Premier League game 40-50,000 thousand a week. It's insanity

People moaning this is wrong that is wrong regarding POGBA situation.

Guyzz these things happen. We dint sign a top class midfielder not because we had POGBA because SNEIJDER was asking for tooooo much and NASRI went the City Wagon..!

Start of the Season SAF saying " If We dont play POGBA he will leave " Why SAF not playing him? Maybe he is not committed to the club for a long term.

We talk of Arsenal with their Youth..! You know what happens they screw AC Milan 3-0 redeem their pride but not a place in next round.! Isnt thats more important..?

There is a solution if POGBA leaves. I can see a Kovacic / Barkeley / Xhaka arriving to replace him
Now Kovacic and Xhaka are not gonna cost much..
Less than 10 M.

Is POGBA really gone..? I am still not too sure of it.!
Agent is a big issue here which most people wont see it.

How many were optimistic Cleverley will make it at Utd before he went to Wigan or even started this season.? But the impact was there.. Who makes people think Tunnicliffe , Petrucci , Lingard , Cole and Brady cant make it with hardwork and keeping there heads down.

Forget about Obi Mikel touted as a next great thing.. look at Anderson what he was touted but hasnt done justice to hi potential and tag labelled to him. Will POGBA do it..? Only time will tell. Though i feel he will eventually..

Dont go on tarted with our YOUTH Policy is in tatters etc etc..! I would only and only worry if FRYERS does not sign a new deal and then i would admit theres definitely something wrong.!

IN FERGIE I STILL TRUST.. and I HOPE U ALSO DO..
