A lot of posters on this site have been wanting to play the system we have played recently for a long time.
With no natural wingers as such in the squad for the last few years it seemed that 442 was a better fit for our personnel.
Jessie or mata at the top of the diamond plays to their strengths. Imo.
It would allow ddg or some people to see martial play as a striker as it would leave martial rash sanchez and lukaku for the 2 spots.

I think two up top is great to see. It gives us different out balls and gives us a chance to get up the pitch more.

I miss the days of great striking partnerships. Everyone seems to be playing 1 up top these days but I don't think defenders are as good as 15 years ago. definitely more athletic but top defenders like Maldini and Stam made you have to think about the game and not rely on pace and power only. that's when a you saw great partnerships work. They knew each others games and it was more exciting in my opinion.

I look at Arsenals defense and think the might have kittens dealing with two strikers and runners from deep.

Lukaku’s post match comments were interesting. He realises he is now second choice behind Rashford but instead of complaining he praised him and said how much he enjoys playing with him. A very subtle way of saying to Ole ‘play both of us’.

Good man fzz. But there is a bookies on every street corner mate so you are very much in the minority.
To be fair nothing wrong with a punt as long as you only bet what you can afford to lose.

I’ve never understood betting. I kind of get the thrill of winning but as they saying goes, you never see a poor bookie. I had a friend who got in a terrible mess with gambling, almost destroyed him.

As ken says only bet what you can afford to lose but it’s a Pandoras box for me.

"Winning" punters always give it back. And more so. A bad habit that can lead to addiction. Only the "bet takers" win. Yes, the bookies. Everyone in their heart of hearts knows this to be true.

09 Mar 2019 18:09:53
People who get addicted to gambling, are the same people who would get addicted to drink or drugs, if that was their thing. Most people can have a flutter without having to remortgage the house, but for those who can't, there needs to be support in place for them. I genuinely love steeplechasing. The betting for me is just a bit of fun.

09 Mar 2019 18:43:01
I have a system Ken so its not a punt. I win on every race I bet on. Not a lot (of money) but I do win every time. And the few pounds i win on each race soon adds up when you make 20 or so bets a day. ;)

Basically i don't punt i have a well know system and am restricted from all main bookies.

Ole - "We need Rom facing the goal and not with his back to the goal".

Music to my ears at last somebody who really understands the big fella!

Another fascinating game ahead and with a few players returning from injury an interesting selection dilemma.

The defence now picks itself.

Pogba will surely return but will Ole risk Herrera or Matic.

Lukaku and Rashford will start and I presume Dalot will retain his place on the right.

Will it be 4-3-3 or possible even 4-4-2. Can't see us playing with split strikers with no Lingard, Mata or even Sanchez available to play the false 9 role.

Could Pogba play to the left of a 4-4-2 with Dalot providing more width from the right and Rashford drifting into the left channel?

Thoughts?

i think the 3 that started the PSG game in cm deserve to keep there place.

i would start martial if fit with rom and rash

and play the same back 4 we've been playing.

I think its because Ole being an ex striker himself knows what works best for a striker and recognises different strikers different traits.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Mar 2019 17:07:57
Great to have Ole's understanding about how a striker ought to play. He is making a real difference already with Rashford and Lukaku. I think Sunday he will go 4-3-3 with the strongest lineup he can. If Matic and Herrera are healthy, he will play them alongside Pogba.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Mar 2019 17:23:34
Bolger they all tried hard worked their socks off but were out played socks the entire game 24% possession tells you that so i think the midfield will include pogba and if herrera or matic are fit and available all should start imo.

Monchi has left Roma, was he a potential Dof for us ed?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - No.}

08 Mar 2019 15:02:44
Is there any news on who the candidates are at present? It all seems to have gone worryingly quite on the DOF front once again. I do hope they don’t back out of appointing a DOF/ Tech Director.
For my money they should seriously be chasing Van der Saar.

Perthredmike, apparently we made an approach to Disney for Mickey mouse, but they turn us down, we then asked about Ronaldo Duck but he is still on loan to the Republican party and busy "running" the USA. They said we could have Goofy but we decided that he wasn't really a step up from Ed Woodward. So we walked away.

I hear we might make an approach to Warner Bros for Porky Pig as Bugs is considered to have too big of an ego to work alongside Ed Woodward.

Although Ryan Giggs would like the club to go for Rodger Rabbit so he can get to know Jessica a bit better.

Ed002, I remember when Mourinho was sacked you said that in your opinion Blanc would be the best fit for the club to get them back to the top.

I'm just wondering if you are of the same opinion now, or if your views have shifted in light of what Old has achieved so far?

Do you still think the club needs someone of experience such as Blanc?

Cheers.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Yes I think someone with more experience would be better.}

08 Mar 2019 12:26:02
I feel we must build a foundation with Ole and a new DoF.
Buying smartly in the market is the next important step.

08 Mar 2019 12:47:25
weve gone down the experience route and its failed. ole deserves the job but phelan carrick and mckenna all needs to stay aswell.

a question for ed.

is the DOF position looking to be sorted by the summer?

thanks.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - it will be sorted out when the find the right person if Woodward will let it.}

08 Mar 2019 15:40:50
I agree that long term the club could do with and experienced hand as there will be a lot of off field turbulence when/ if the club ever appoint a DoF.

However, I feel atm if the club appoint anyone other than Ole then it could undo all the good work he has done up until now.

Maybe now the best course of action is to give Ole a three year deal at the end of the season and let him bring back more of the club's identity while a suitable candidate can be found for the DoF role which long term is the far more important position to get right.

Agree3 Disagree0

09 Mar 2019 08:56:09
I agree Shappy. Give him a 3 year deal. By now he's identified who needs to depart and the sort of player we need to be bringing in. A DoF could slow things down at the moment as he'd need to get up to speed.

Regards a DoF I think we need someone who understands the clubs ethos especially regards style of play and commitment to young players.

Wow I’m stilling grinning like a Cheshire Cat after that heroic victory on Wednesday. Can’t get ole’s at the wheel out of my head!

There have been some fantastic posts the last few days by so many posters. This site has been such a joy to read and for the first time, in what seems like an eternity, everyone at connected with united is on the same page. There is this incredible synergy and connection growing between this united squad, the current manager and the fans that I haven’t experienced in so so long.

The last 5 years have been so difficult. We were spoilt by success under sir Alex that it got to the point where winning the league and competing for the biggest honours was enjoyable but in some instances it was almost a formality. We’ve sat and watched 26 years of heritage and identity crumble in the blink of an eye.

We have seen 3 managers come in deviate so far from the United way that we were in serious danger of losing touch with our identity and values. We stopped being a club that cared about entertaining the fans, playing attacking football and never giving up until that final whistle. All that seemed to matter was that next commercial deal or that player to sell millions of shirts. We were losing our soul.

In steps a humble man. Out of chance and luck. A man who has united running through his veins. A man who identifies with us. A man who loves that badge on his chest. And what we are seeing is something so so special. You have the players, both young and experienced, believing in his way. The United way. To see so many academy players on that pitch at the end sums up what Manchester United is about. Sir matt busby would have been so so proud.

The first 5 months of this season where perhaps some of the worst I have witnessed. There was no hope or positivity at all. But these last 3 months have been the best I have experienced. I am one of the younger fans so my earliest memory is the 1999 treble. And yes I remember the 2008 champions league victory. But the sheer contrast between before ole took over and after has been a joy to watch. I’ve never been so excited to watch a united team play. This is nowhere near the best one quality wise. But there is this belief amongst fans and players alike that ole could build something special.

Sure we have deficiencies in the team and we need to appoint a DOF. But things are on the up and we are back. Can we win the champions league? Anything is possible.

Great post park but i disagree on the entertaining part. We touched the ball 4 times in paris, thrice in their and once in ours and that's it. We had 24% possession so don't think that was entertaining at all. Our entertainment however started after the final whistle and its been 3 night and it still feels like yesterday. Grin is so big that it looks like i have been sleeping with a hanger in my mouth. Ole has done well to unite the players again which Jose couldn't do. But is that enough to guarantee him a job? I say the popular opinion with the fans is yes and i can't argue with that given the positivity and the results but i still think we might need a more experienced head at the helm. Ole could be assistant and then in 3 years time take over.

Agree0 Disagree3

08 Mar 2019 20:29:30
I have to disagree UA. I understand your reasoning and in some respects ole is a risky appointment.
Your correct i think when you say iuts not been scintillating football in terms of quality. But there are many ways to win a game and ole has used most of them.
Early on when everybody is fit the quality was better. But when the injuries came and in big numbers he has found ways to win without the ball in some cases. So tactically he had been great. Changing team shape increasing the work ethic you can see the players are hungry.
I hope when we get our more experienced players in herrera and matic back and a flair like martial and with the movement jessie provides that we will see more quality and control in our games.
That's taking nothing away from what the guys who have come in have done as they have all made an impact.
There are a few players in the squad that make little or no impact valencia rojo darmian sanchez.

09 Mar 2019 05:21:18
Agreed Ken, the guys now play like a team where they are putting their all for the other one. let's just hope that if he Ole does get the job, he focusses on the style of play as well and gets in better cover for the likes of Pogba, if he stays.

Review Of The Day 8th March 2019

Man City will forever be "under investigation" for financial misconduct as what they are doing is dodgy at best. However, one thing we all know is if you have enough money the rules don't apply for you. So we will have another investigation just to keep up appearances which will ultimately lead to nothing or very little happening.

Also I wish both the United and City fans a speedy recovery and hope neither suffer long term consequences from those awful attacks.

Nice one Ed001,

Clearly Fellaini’s number 1 fan lol.

Do you think City will be found guilty of anything? They have a suspended fine for previous FFP irregularities, right?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - they will never be found guilty, a lot of the clubs they are using to shift money and players around do not even come under the UEFA umbrella, so they can easily hide anything they want to financially.

And yes, defo a big …. fan.}

08 Mar 2019 08:09:14
Great read Ed.
I am disgusted with the hooliganism from those people who physically attack opposition supporters. Citeh fane who was in coma and our fan who was stabbed in Paris. Yes no doubt sometimes fans behaved badly and overly celebrated but that doesn’t warrant any physical attack. What a bunch of bloody morons. If they want physical they should get in the MMA octagon. Real persons.
Whilst I enjoyed the article I am really appalled by the incidents. Make my blood boil 🙄😡.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - sad thing is that most of these clubs have longstanding problems with hooliganism. PSG were little more than the French Millwall before the Qataris bought them. There were countless incidents between them and other fans travelling to games, particularly Marseille. It is time the authorities stopped pretending it is not their problem when it happens outside stadiums!}

08 Mar 2019 08:18:02
Money talks I suppose. Is it normal that City Football Group own so many clubs around the world, Ed?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - no, though there have been others who have owned more than one club, such as the Pozzos, no one has ever taken it to this extent before.}

08 Mar 2019 12:45:33
Aren't City buying one in India as well? So there just using them to funnel cash around. Its little more than money laundering.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Manchester City are not buying clubs, their owners are. Manchester City are one of the clubs in the portfolio - and you may well see this happening more often.}

08 Mar 2019 16:08:05
I meant to put city's owners, was in a rush at lunch.

Is there any plans to develop partnerships with clubs in other countries?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Yes, they will continue to develop partnerships along the line of the agreements with Atlético Torque and Atletico Venezuela
