i think the morale of all the moans and groans over the past few weeks, is that we are top of the league, it's about time we started playing like it, isn't it?

the quicker we get the league wrapped up the better. no matter how we do it. our season fizzled out after the Madrid game and hopefully come the summer we will see changes for the better.

just keep the faith for now. I know everyone is a bit fed up but there's nothing we can do about it now and it could be worse

Elvis

Believable12 Unbelievable0

Agree just hope we win at stoke anything else would make things quite nervy as I don't necessarily want to go to West Ham needing a win.

I expect City to beat wigan at home easily and win at spurs. I know a lot of us are hoping that they drop points there but Spurs are not in great form and if Bale and Lennon are still injured then City should win that game without a lot of fuss.

Shahram

Agree2 Disagree0

Agree shahram, city will win all their remaining games.
We need to get our act together. We have been truly pathetic since the Madrid game, and no one has been worse than our manager. He has made a lot of tactical errors, howlers. Problem, is he blames the team, the players, the ref, the opposition, the crowd, but never himself. In my opinion, we desperately need him to retire at the end if the season.
Nomidfield

Agree0 Disagree0

No midfield

I am not saying they will win all their remaining games but they do have a much easier run in. w

What I don't want is to motivate them and put undue pressure on to ourselves by a bad result.

I think 9 points will do the job and the sooner we bag them the better.

The best opportunity to pick up at least 2 wins is in the the next 3 games as the last four are not easy by any measure.

I am also worried about our CB's and have not heard anything about how serious their injuries are.

Alri lads, Anyone see Jurgen Klopps interview on Sky, what a character would love if he was the next manager. Real down to earth. Said his team played sh1t.

Sulei

You mean he did not blame the ref, the pitch etc etc lol

Shahram

He was amazing to watch, so much passion, intelligent man. He never lost his cool, despite the reporter trying to tell him their third goal was offside. He will be fantastic at united.
Please fergie, retire, take effing phelan with you and let this guy do the job.

For. anyone who missed Malaga- Dortmund, Dortmund just came back from 2-1 behind. They needed to score twice to advance and scored 2 goals in Fergy time. Amazing.

Osco looks class though

Mick

Believable4 Unbelievable1

I watched the real game as I did not think Malaga would be competitive in Dortmund. I have made tons of money this year betting against them Malaga winning.

Funny old game as they almost put out Dortmund.

Watched Real and CR07 was superb as usual and wish we had never sold him.

Well lads and lasses

Few on here can argue that I came on here after the Chelsea match and said this title race is far from over.

I am not going to go in to what I think of that manager. If he had any degree of decency he would of left after Moscow and let the person who really masterminded it all Carlos Quieroz take over. But being his arrogant narcissistic self decided to remain and that after he brought the Glazers to the table with his greed over a racehorses blood rights.

There you go couldn't help myself

Spurs home Giggs Carrick
Norwich away Giggs Carrick
Man city home Giggs Carrick
2 European cup finals Giggs Carrick

Pattern anybody?

With this clown and his band of jesters underneath him the best way I can describe us is what everyone of our rivals now know we are. A 6f horse in a 2 mile race. The media mollycoddle him because they know the laughing stock we are and are about to become again with him.

Believable16 Unbelievable16

Errrr, you've gone just ever so slightly too far there mate, lol.

SAF must be the greatest british 'clown' in history!

Can't disagree with the wonderment at Giggs' place in midfield but I'm not going to look past everything SAF has done for the club because of it.

Agree7 Disagree5

Mike,

I can't take that seriously in anyway, read it back, you can't be serious?

Agree7 Disagree4

Mike, you would seriously want to cop on to yourself. That is the most venomous pile of absolute horse s**t I have ever read on here. How can you call Ferguson a clown? Fans of any football club would give their right leg to have the consistent success that he has brought to United. Have a bit of decency and give credit where credit is due.

jomu

Agree5 Disagree3

Unless he's hitting the 'agree' button himself, I can't believe there are ungrateful fools agreeing with it.

For someone from Ulster, is Moston near Manchester, or Liverpool?

Agree5 Disagree3

First and foremost I haven't decried anything he has done in the past regarding success. The point I make is that this is a modern game nowadays, where tactical moves need to be tracked all the way through the game. I am sorry to say against Mourinho, Mancini and Benitez in recent weeks the proof is there that we have come up short.

Yes maybe I am a bit angry about Monday night but being a proud mancunian who detests City who wouldn't be. They aren't that good this year but we made it easy for them with that midfield selection.

Everyone in that ground on Monday night within the first 5 minutes knew he had got it horribly wrong. If the centre backs were injured fair enough putting Jones there, but where was Cleverley and Valencia early on to add some steel to the contest in the middle of the park, where Toure wasn't even breaking sweat.

There is no room for sentiment at this level and this sense of loyalty from a large majority of people is what he knows he can rely on. Come on wake up if a journalist upsets him he won't allow them in to press conferences. Petty.

Our great club now needs a change and has done for 5 years with a younger tactically sound manager who has the staff around him to track tactical changes during games and have the bottle to do them when they have got it wrong.

Our plan A is usually ok monday night an exception, but I don't change my opinion on what I have said about the reason the Glazers are here also.

In addition to this who would argue with me over the last 4 weeks that our legs are gone. Reading and Sunderland in the league were evidence of it

Mike

Agree4 Disagree1

As mike has said he wasnt calling fergie for his past successes but what has happened in the last 2 seasons. not just our poor performances, and don't go on about 12 points clear we have been absolute crap at times and still won, but our poor tactical awareness. as in all occupations you can't survive forever purely on past successes but I think that's where we are now and people are either too sacred to question fergie or wear rose tinted specs. its alright critisising match going passionate reds from the comfort of your armchairs, but if some of you went regulary, monday night you would of heard 70 odd thousand fans groaning at our team selection and performance.
johndenton

Agree3 Disagree1

Johndenton

You don't think being 12 points clear at the top of the league is important in deciding whether SAF should still be our manager or not? I find that astounding. Also, you say it's about the last 2 years but I think his 25 odd previous years of amazing service affords him a little bit more patience than you are suggesting!

I agree that we have work to do in order to improve our performances and plug a few gaps in the squad. But I still have faith that SAF is the man for the job.

If SAF should be sacked, then Mancini - given the assets available to him and money spent - should be hung drawn and quartered for this year's performance!

HBadger

Agree2 Disagree2

Hb i'm not calling for fergie to be sacked after everything he has done for us, but after watching utd for 41 years i'm now witnessing some of the poorest and most boring football I have ever seen us play. it is painful to watch especially with my sons ticket as well i'm shelling out £2k a season. as we have seen we don't appear to have a plan b or any tactical nous and a lot of teams have now worked out how to stiffle our play. as for being 12 points clear with the way we have been playing it doesn't say a lot for the standard of the english premier league. fergie himself never dwells on the previous season or title but moves on to the next one, the problem is success isn't guarenteed by past glory it has to be earnt. we have been crying out for midfield reinforcements for at least 3 seasons now, we havnt addressed this and in my view it cost us the title last year, along with team selection and tactics against city, wigan and everton. you win nothing looking back at previous years the game moves on and we have to move with it unfortunately I think the overall quality of the 1st 11 and squad is very average other than about 4-5 players.
johndenton

Agree0 Disagree0

StevieK

Definitely something dodgy going on with the agrees and disagrees on this thread! Mike, I hope that's not your handy work ;)

HBadger

Agree0 Disagree0

Johndenton

That is a lot of money and I can understand why your frustrations are so great! I only get to a few games a season and TBH even if I lived in Manchester I'd struggle to afford tickets for the whole season. On that point I can understand your pain!

I'm not sure your post makes 100% sense to me. We lost the league last year because of our midfield yet we look to be on our way to winning it this year with the same midfield? I agree that we need to strengthen CM and have done for a few years - but it's been good enough to get to where we are this year.

Also, you say we have played badly, which we have by our very high standards. But how have Chelsea played this season? And City? Both have spent shedloads of money, have recognised world class stars - yet both have hit much lower lows than us this season.

Maybe the EPL has become more competetive? The teams at the bottom spend much more these days and we are in competition with 2 'money clubs' whereas previously it was only 1 (Chelsea) and before that it was none. Sometimes it feels like we're patching things together against the top teams and I think that is a result of so much money being spent elsewhere.

SAF's team selection is something I have mentioned this week. But as far as I can remember he has made questionable team selections ever since the 1990's. I remember years ago being annoyed at seeing certain players start (can't think of a good example now) - and it has worked for him in the past. So I think it's unfair to start using that as a reason to sack him when it's always been his perogative to pick the team he feels is right.

SAF has brought us so much success he deserves patience, respect and our support IMO.

You may argue that if we had another manager we would have a better looking starting XI and would be playing better - but it can also be argued that no other manager in the world would have got as many positive results out of our group of players as he has done this season.

IMO people should be careful what they wish for.

HBadger

Agree0 Disagree0

Hb I am genuinely worried about fergie, everyone including him has seen us get overun in midfield everytime he's played giggs there yet he still go, s with that selection. I think this season city have underperformed at times maybe they thought after last season this one would be a stroll I don't know, also chelsea have been bedding in a lot of new players this season and been very erratic. I expect both to spend heavy again in the summer.
johndenton

Agree0 Disagree0

Fair play JD, we all have our opinions.

The one thing I do agree with is the Giggs in midfield thing, I just can't see the sense of it at all. But I'll keep my faith in the big man for now.

It will be a very important summer that's for sure!

'Huff and puff' from us again in a big game, but without the class in key areas.

Here's my take on the current crop and changes required.

Midfield:
Ashley Young, Valencia - mid-upper-mid table premiership players, not good enough at the top level. Want them out.

Nani - occasionally brilliant, always inconsistent, but has totally lost the plot now. Out.

Anderson - had ability, but too fat and injury prone. Out

Cleverly - not top champs league quality. But a worthy option.

Carrick - been excellent this season. Has missed a physical, decisive partner in midfield.

Attack:
Keep as is. Only concern is Rooney isn't the force he was.

Defence:
Can live with it, for now. Only concern is Vidic's durability now after injuries. We need a true leader to play every week, as Evra isn't a worthy skipper.

Being realistic we 'only' need 2 top signings to make that necessary step up in class, to make us champs league contenders again (which we were not this season, despite the Madrid debacle)

1. Dominant, all-round central midfielder e. g. Strootman.
2. Left-sided attacker/winger e. g. James Rodriguez.
Also reliant here on Kagawa truly settling and firing next season.

What are your thoughts fellow Reds? Ed004?

RAVE {Ed004's Note - I'm not sure 2 will be enough as we definitely need a left back}

Believable3 Unbelievable1

Valencia and Young are better players than they have shown this year and are at least very good squad options. We'd be made to let them go as well as Nani and then bring in Rodriguez and Zaha who although have great potential have proven nothing in the premier league. Both could struggle to adapt and then we'd only have Kagawa and Welbeck who could play on the wing.

Let Nani go but keep Valencia and Young for at least one more season.

Hey fella's,
Right here are 7 players that have been linked for sale or mentioned leaving this season.

Obviously we ain't gunna sell all 7 players but thought i'd ask who u would sell.

Nani- Had his time imo the last 2 seasons were his 'big' seasons and tbh he hasn't done it, maybe injury has hampered him but when fit way to inconsistent imo. The thing he does offer is that little bit of magic but it is few and fa between.

Young- Another like Nani that is so infuriating, but when on song can deliver one hell of a ball, but just always seems to want that right foot and is predictable.

Valencia- So off form its unreal! will he get it back? Does he deserve the time to? If he does, is there room for the style of play we seem to be trying to implement? But he can cover RB as well.

Rooney- Very hit and miss this season, When in form has been good but spent to long out of form this season to warrant that pay packet he picks up and in 2 years time he out of contract so talks will begin in the summer if he is staying.

Hernandez- This is such a painful thought for me, the lad needs football and deserves it as well, he would fetch a lot more money than our other 'squad' players too.

Anderson- The same problem as Nani really but more injury prone and over weight.

I understand its all if's and buts but thought i'd just get everyones opinion on who they would sell out of those 6 players. say u have 3 to choose from is more likely than all 6

My 3 would be Young, Nani and Anderson

Believable5 Unbelievable4

Grow up

Agree1 Disagree11

All except Hernandez/Valencia

Brendan81

Agree5 Disagree2

Nani and Anderson I think will be sold. Rooney i'm still on the fence about. Valencia Young and Hernandez and invaluable squad players and the differance between winning the league and losing it.

Agree10 Disagree1

For me, it's just time that Nani and Anderson move on. Poor form, injuries and contract disputes being among the reasons why.

Young I'd keep as a squad player and to help maintain the british core to our squad.

I'd probably keep Rooney and Valencia - but in truth it depends what style we want to play as to whether they should.

Would definitely keep Hernandez, a good finisher and totally unique amongst our squad.

So only Nani and Anderson as definite gonners in my book.

Agree3 Disagree2

U felt the need to comment that no name and i'm the one who needs to grow up? At least i'm brave enough to leave a name

Agree6 Disagree0

Seems I can't count aswell lol

Agree2 Disagree0

Nani ando and schoels I actually hope he goes because one more season with him would be painfull one of valencia and young could go more likely young i'd rather valencia he can only realy play down the right hand side rb and rm and we have fabio to play right back next season i'd like two midfielders if possible one started and one bench player that's better than cleverly i'd also like to see powell played more

Just watching Madrid, I think that we played incredibly well to match them. But for some reason the defeat has more or less ended the season in the minds of our players. Not on a downer or anything, just think that we want to cruise to the title now and have given up. Reinforcement is needed in summer, how far we will go is intriguing, I'm hoping for quite a few. Also think yesterday has further added to my belief that Rooney is now expendable - if his name wasn't Rooney and it was Cleverly then we would be on his back even more than we are as would the press, pundits etc. He really has lost his way and, like Torres, I don't see him refinding it quick enough to justify taking up a squad position.

Believable2 Unbelievable2

After watching the game yesterday which United players didn't look expendable

Phil Jones! ;)

Agree5 Disagree0

Hb
Good shout, really hope the lad can have a bit more luck with injuries

Agree3 Disagree0

I think Rooney was among our better players in the first half, atleast was trying to create something out there. People complain about RVPs lack of service and the non existent midfield and yet expect Rooney to just play like 3 players at once and control proceedings everywhere. With the chasing that we were doing, he was knackered by the second half and I think after the injury layoff, he was not 100%. What about the chance Robin had? Or may be his name is Wayne Rooney and not some sexy RVP that we use him as a scapegoat? Mind you, am not saying Rooney was very good that match, but who was except for Jonesy that day?

Manchester United to make some big signings this summer. Any1 can argue that where top of the league but. Giggs, Anderson, scholes, nani, evra, Valencia, young, buttner, justarnt good enougth anymore. Just scared of fergie coming out and saying " we don't need big signings '

Believable2 Unbelievable2

09 Apr 2013 19:59:51
i agree most those names aren't good enough but you can't just get rid of that many players and find worldclass replacements, also why is buttners name on there, he's a young signing who has played well when given a chance, he could be a good player

Agree7 Disagree1

09 Apr 2013 19:19:13
I agree with those who say that yesterday's game means very little and changes nothing.

I can also agree that with our current squad we need to set up to counter attack against teams with such quality in the attacking 3rd as Chelsea or City. (although I don't see where Giggs fits into that TBH!)

My main question to poster's is this - do we really believe that ALL the necessary changes will be made this summer to allow us to play that more progressive system NEXT season?

My (slight) worry is that we will be left next season still saying 'we need 1 or 2 more' to allow us to finally switch to a more fluid, attacking style.

Believable1 Unbelievable3

I think we will sign 1 or 2. I don't think we will do what is necessary.

Agree2 Disagree0

Hb
What's really changed from last year, this summer we will all be wishing for the same players as we were last year.

Agree2 Disagree0

HB
We will sign players whether they are the right ones remains to be seen midfield is priority of course but before we sign anyone we as a club need to decide on what style we will play and buy accordingly as its no use buying a quality player ie kagawa then forcing him into a different system you just don't get the best from them so if we don't get the right players for the right system we will as you say be left feeling its not quite right and we need 1 or2 more and we, ll all be frustrated yet again

Agree0 Disagree0

Fresh!

I have the same hunch.

jred

That's my point, when will we be ready to go toe to toe with the top teams instead of resigning to counter attack football? We were hoping we'd be ready this season with the signings of Kagawa and RVP but now we are saying we don't have the right personnel still. So will we have the right personnel after this summer? I think a good CM and good winger will really help us next season but I'm not sure that would be enough to transform our team from the one we saw last night to one that is able to dominate teams and attack fluidly like we used to against the top teams?

(please note this is a comment on playing style and is nothing to do with results, which have been good this season)

onecut

Totally agree. Personally, I'm not as convinced as other's that we will be shifting from traditional wing play to a City/Chesea style 4231. We need to choose the right system, then choose the right player's to fit it. I'm just not convinced that we will have the right personnel to play a sexy 4231 formation next season - as many other poster's seem to believe.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think we could look at doing our own brand of 4231. Most play with three AM's behind the striker. I think we could play a system that has us play three strikers with one AM in behind so more of a 4213 but let the wider strikers drop back abit more. I think if we signed Strootman and Lewandowski this would be easily implemented. with a line up like this:

DDG, Rafael, Evans, Vidic, Evra, Strootman, Carrick, RvP, Kagawa, Welbeck, Lewandowski.

With Welbeck on the left cutting in on his right foot and Rvp on the right cutting in on his left, That would leave Kagawa playing in the hole and linking up with Lewandowski again.

If we needed to be more defensive we could go into a narrower 4312 with the diamond formation by bringing Welbeck off and Cleverley on. That way we'd have a solid midfield of Cleverley Carrick and Strootman with RvP and Lewandowski upfront with Kagawa in the hole.

This is how I feel we should adapt next season. With Wanyama coming in as another option in the middle, with maybe Alex Sandro as a bonus to replace Evra but I really doubt that would happen. Zaha could fit into either of the wider positions in the first formation as could Young if you needed a more accustomed wide player.

Agree12 Disagree1

Interesting Shappy - can't say that would be my ideal solution (too heavy up top and not enough ability to get outside the FB's for me) but it is certainly an option and one that could be easily achieved with a couple of decent signings.

Agree1 Disagree0

09 Apr 2013 23:31:56
That is why imo we would need to sign Strootman and Wanyama to give us a more solid base. I think the ability to get around the full back will from our full backs. it is slightly top heavy but that just takes us back to our more cavalier style and would be implemented with pressing high up the pitch. It would allow for lots of movement and interchanging of positions. With our gung ho full backs this system would suit them, plus it would fit best with our players. {Ed004's Note - I reckon that formation suits Rafael, Smalling and Evans done to the ground as none are lacking in pace to get back if we push forward though Evra doesn't have the work rate for it and Vidic and Rio are too slow for it}

Agree5 Disagree0

10 Apr 2013 07:59:34
Evra is only going to be here for one more season at most, buttner has the pace and work rate to play that role. There maybe a question as to whether he has the quality but if he falls short then someone like Alex Sandro would be perfect for that role. Long term Evans and Smalling will be our first choice pairing unless we sign someone else, so long term it wouldn't be an issue. In the short term if we signed Wanyama he could play in midfield when Rio or Vidic play, he has the pace to cover for them if we get caught on the counter. But the plan for this kind of set up is to keep possession of the ball thus there will be less oppertunities to counter us.

Agree5 Disagree0

If Van Persie doesn't score vs Stoke then he would have equalled Torres' worst goal drought at Chelsea.

Believable3 Unbelievable4

And by the end of the season he would have won more premier league titles in one season than Torres has in his career

Agree8 Disagree2

I don't think it was meant as a smart arse comment. Quite interesting though. Unlike Torres though, its not RVPs fault, he's not had any service. Torres gets good service but still doesn't score.

Why didn't fergie don't go for cazorla? He was cheap and could have been the link between rvp and the midfield. instead got kagawa. only god knows
VGB

Believable3 Unbelievable11

We went for Kagawa in May/June, Cazorla was made available in July/August I believe? If Kagawa fell through then no doubt United would have went for him. I think same goes for Chelsea had they not signed Hazard & Oscar.

Sydney!

Agree2 Disagree1

In the long run Kagawa will be considered the better buy. Trust me on that.

Agree20 Disagree8

Kagawa will be twice the player Cazorla is next season, he just needs time to settle

Agree13 Disagree8

I agree that kagawa will vastly improve next season, however to see his full potential we will have to play a different formation, similar to what Dortmund played when he was with them.
Nathan

Agree5 Disagree0

Aviddevil

given the fact that Cazorla gets picked in the spain squad before matta that is some statement given the players they can choose from

shahram

Agree2 Disagree0

Kagawa at Dortmund was 22 years old and the best player in the league. Cazorla in La Liga was a good player but nowhere near as good as Kagawa was. Just because he adapted quicker doesn't make him a better player. Kagawa's potential eclipses Cazorla's current quality.

Mick

Agree7 Disagree3

Shahram

Cazorla is better now but I see much more potential in Kagawa, he shone in a strong Dortmund team whilst Cazorla was in a average Malaga side and a sun par Arsenal side which can make him look better and therefore get him picked

Agree1 Disagree0

Avildevil

Cazorla would also shine in Dortmund side as it helps to have really good players around you. He is also playing for an Arsenal side that is rebuilding and has had mass exodus over the last 3 years.

They are quite different as players and both are very good imo but time will tell who is better suited for pl.

Shahram

Agree2 Disagree0

We looked for lucas moura at that time. I think Fergie could have gone for cazorla. He can provide that missing link. since he can play both wings and centre midfield and his control and passing in tight areas is better than any united players. He was cheap and can be better option than Nani and Young

I don't think the result was too bad tbh. We did not play our usual game, we tried to adapt to City's dominating game play and we were rather boeing to watch. Some things ( most of us already knew ) were highlited last night.

1- Giggs is not suited for a 2 men midfield, especially up against the best central midfield in the league. He cost us a goal and didn't contribute offensivly. But this is old news to us and I fail to see Fergy's logic in deploying him next to Carrick.

2- Jones is a beast. He showed again that his best position is in central defense.

3- Evra's offensive qualities don't excuse his pathethic defending. Aguero was drifting to the left and Evra should have blocked him out. When he was advancing I was looking around for Evra waiting for him to block Aguero but, surprise surprise! he was out of position, relaxing in central midfield. Why would a left back advance to central. midfield?

4- Our midfield was overrun but I don't think it's completely Giggs' fault. Carrick didn't have his best game but it's more down to tactics than anything else.
Whenever we play Ferdinand or Vida in central defense, we stay deep in our half and invite pressure. We give opposing teams more room in their half and we fail to dominate the game. This might work well when Vidic is on because he is a magnificent defender and he blocks everything but the fact remains that we can't dominate a game with one of the 2 starting. Kompany and Nastasic were pushing on the halfway line throughout the game, giving us less room to launch counter attacks. The only way to improve that aspect is to play pacy and positionally intelligent defenders. That's why I think it's best to start 2 of Evans, Smalling and Jones. They have the pace and intelligence to amintain a high line and help out in midfield, closing teams down when they get the ball. Apparently last night both Smalling and Evans were unavailable, so we needed Jones in central defense instead of midfield, but even if both Evans and Smalling were fit, one of Vidic or Ferdinand would have started, which meant City will dominate.

5- Ferguson is a magnificent manager, but not for the first time this season he proved to be tactically mediocre. Against Real, the right changes would have helped us hang on to our lead, but the manager was nowhere to be found. Same happebed against City. Giggs needed replacement. If it was any other manager, Giggs' wouldn't have made it back from halftime, he wouldn't have even started when a more capable, younger player is available. Cleverley might not be the most capable midfielder in the league but he would do a better job than a 40 yo winger turned midfielder.

6- Young is average. Always have been, always will be. In his last 2 seasons, Young stepped up when needed once. HE scored twice against Tottenham in our 3-1 victory last season but apart from that, he was never the man we turbed to when things got rough.

7- the derby was when we needed Rooney to step up. " The heart and soul of the team " was nowhere to be found. At a point during the match he was excahnging passes with Welbeck. In his return pass to Danny ( a 5 yard pass ) he passed it straight to the feet of Milner. I laughed out loud and I just couldn't stop. It was seriously that bad. When you are one of the highest paid footballers on the plabet, you are supposed to be able to pull off a five yard pass. The bartender, who missed the incident, took away my Brandy privileges and it turned into a bad night.

8- Welbeck was bad. If he was able to just see Rooney in soace ibstead of trying to dribble his way past Kompany at one atage, Rooney would have been in a 1 on 1 up against Hart. But he worked hard and never stopped running. The dact that he can't hit a barn door is irrelevant, he is a very useful squad player who is improving.

I totally agree with your first point, Giggs should only play as a winger for 20/30 minute cameo's or as the furthest forward of a midfield three if he is going to play longer than that.

Jones is potentially a great CB or a good DM. let's play him where he can become a great player and stop getting him to "do a job" in midfield. If we need a DM let's buy Wanyama, a player who can be a great DM.

Your third point I think is being alittle harsh on Evra, Aguero picked the ball up on the right then cut right across our defence Rafael Rio and Jones all had chances to put a tackle in but none did. And what on earth was Giggs playing at with that back heel to give the ball away in the first place, thus cutting Carrick out of the game. That goal has to go down as a goal conceded by the whole team and not blame one player for it.

Our tactics were to sit deep and pull them out, that is why their defenders were sitting so high but we needed Hernandez on from the start if we are going to play that way as he has the pace and finishing ability to punish them from through balls or balls over the top.

Sir Alex has always been a slow manager to react, its one of his few weaknesses. I do feel he has a blind spot for Giggs though.

Young is a good squad player, but he plays best when his team are on top, he isn't the man to turn to to change the game.

Rooney has been very poor this season. It will be interesting to see what happens in the summer. I wouldn't be too worried if we saw him go, as long as we made the right signings to strenghten the team.

Welbeck is a very useful squad player, but I feel that in time if he fullfills his potential then he could become a first choice player with us.

Agree12 Disagree2

I know we were sitting deep, as we have been doing against every decent team this season, which is, imo, unacceptable for a club of our ststire. WeWe sat deep against Chelsea on 3 occasions, against City twice and against Real Madrid twice.

I understand the logic of sitting deep against Madrid, eliminating their counter attacking abilities. But against Chelsea and City, we shoukd be able to impose our game on them, or at least try to.

This is when the defensive conundrum comes into play. Vidic and Ferdinand, along with Evans, are our best defenders. But if one the 2 plays, that means our defense can't push forward, which means we will have to sit deep and invite pressure. So what should we do? Continue playing Vida and Ferdinand and transform into a team that sit deep and counter attack every single match, or move on, possibly buy a new pacy centre back, start pushing forward and boss the games we play?

Mick

Agree0 Disagree0

Shappy I agree with you regarding Jones potentially being great at CB but only useful in midfield. I also wanted us to sign Wanyama as well as Strootman initially. However, I'm starting to think we only need to play 3 in midfield in certain games - perhaps 5 or 10 times a season max?

So I'm thinking now that I'd rather get Strootman plus a technically gifted playmaker e. g. Modric, Veratti. That means we could play Carrick/Stroot alongside the playmaker in most games. Or Carrick & Strootman if we need more stability. Then in the biggest games play Jones as DM with any 2 of the above.

The bonus with this plan is that Jones won't get 30-40 games at CB anyway whilst Vidic/Evans/Smalling are here so we'd be making the most of what we already have rather than splashing £15m on Wanyama to play in only certain games.

Agree3 Disagree0

Mick with our current midfield we struggle to impose ourselves against half decent teams like Spurs. Until we sort that we will struggle.

Gav, I thought that at one point. But next year the only midfielders we'll have that will be of regular use will be Carrick and Cleverley, both of which are more passers than tacklers. Giggs isn't suited to midfield and Scholes and Anderson will be off in the summer and Fletcher may not make it back. So if we just sign Strootman then that only really leaves us with three players for four places, that's not enough depth. Then imagin if Strootman got injuried, we'd be right back where we are this season with Carrick and Cleverley.

Agree5 Disagree0

Shappy

I know what you're saing but our best CM partnership this season has been Carrick & Cleverly - neither of them are tacklers. I'd like to see a bit more defensive ability in there permanantly but I'm not sure SAF wants that. If we get Strootman he can at least make tackles (far better than Cleverly and probably stronger in the tackle than Carrick). He can play the deep role like Carrick but can also play box-to-box to provide that drive forwards that we have lacked. I'd have Veratti/Modric type player to take Cleverly's place to make him work harder to improve. Then like I said, Jones would be drafted in when we need him - which is only around 5/10 times a season.

I'd like us to play with a Wanyama type player more often but I just don't see SAF going down that route. He doesn't seem to rate midfielder's whose best attribute is defence, for some reason.

So I'd sell Ando, let Scholes and possibly Fletcher retire - to be left with Carrick, Strootman, Veratti/Modric & Cleverly as our 4 main options. Jones to be drafted in for certain games. With Giggs and Powell as additional cover I think we'd have plenty of cover.

Agree0 Disagree0

As an idea it looks good but both Veratti and Modric in reality will end up else where. Modric I see ending up at Chelsea if he comes back to England. ANd Veratti is wanted by Juve and he would rather go back to Italy. Strootman is much better suited as a box to box player, and can get caught out of position when asked to play the deeper holding role. Wanyama is a master at holding his position and also the teams shape, he is also brilliant at shielding the back four and covering full backs when they get caught further forward. Long term I think a Wanyama/Strootman midfield looks like a duo that could dominate any game and give the best possible platform for our more expansive players to build from.

I don't see the use of traditional winger as something that will have much of a place in football from here on in. Instead you'll see more inside forwards and the width will have to come from full backs, when you do this it is vital that you have someone there to cover those full backs. That is why I feel we need BOTH Strootman and Wanyama.

Agree5 Disagree0

Agreed Shaps - I was using them as examples of the type of player, I can't see either ending up at OT.

Wanyama & Strootman would be a very solid base to work from and they would only get better with age. Do you think that between them there would be enough crativity and technical ability in there?

That would be my only worry, Carrick's ball play this season has held us together at times. From what I've seen of Strootman (admittedely not loads) he's good on the ball but not on a par in terms of playmaking as Carrick yet.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Apr 2013 23:40:59
Strootman started his career playing in the hole like Kagawa, his vision and his eye for a pass are his best assets imo. His passing is supurb, he always has a pass completion rate in the high 80's/low 90's. His long passes aren't as good as Carricks but his tackling is better. He imo will be a better player than Carrick, he's more mobile, just as good a passer, more comfortable in possession and a better tackler. He just needs to improve his positioning and his long passing and he'll elcilpse Carrick in a couple of years. What he needs is what Carrick has needed a more defensive midfield partner.

Agree3 Disagree0

09 Apr 2013 23:51:05
I agree with both of you to a certain extent.

Strootman can play both the holding role and the box to box role. While his engine, tackling and all around- ability are wonderful, i'm not sure his positiong, calmness and long range passing are at the level required to become a long term deep lying playmaker. Don't get me wrong, I think he can take over from Carrick, but he is at his best when he plays next to a Carrick type.

A central midfield of Strootman and Wanyama would probably be the most physically imposing central midfield in the world and would work well together, but I think both are at their best playing alongside a passer, not a tackler.

If you guys remember the 99 era, we had Keane and Scholes. Keane was the hard tackling psychotic box to box player, while Scholes was the playmaker. ( by playmaker I mean in central midfield not a number 10 ). i'm just not sure if those 2 complement each other's game as well as Scholes and Keane. I guess we wouldn't know unless we try it anyhow.

If we are in search of a central playmaker to play alongside one of those too, Modric, Gondogan, Badelj, Kovacic, Veratti. would be great signings.

If we look within our own team, we have Cleverley and Anderson who can do the job but with Ando looking to leave and Cleverley yet to prove himself, our options in the first team are limited. If we look in the U21s, we have some decent options. Powell would be good as a longterm option but is looking more likely to have an attacking role. Petrucci wasn't lucky with his loan, guetting injured just when things started looking interesting. We also have a youngster called Ben pearson. He is held in high esteem by regular followers of youth football, and is beeing touted as the new Paul Scholes.

Petrucci aside, I don't think any of them has a realistic option of guetting games next season in that particular position ( Powell I suspect would be given a decent number of games in a more advanced area ) but he might be on his way out given his injury concerns.

In terms of tough tacklers we only have Enkagamene and Tunicliffe but both are a long way off.

If we decide to look within or buy a 2nd central midfielder, I think one of Strootman and Wanyama is a necessity. i'm not sure they could form a good partnership because of their similarities, but with those 2 playing together in a double pivot in a 4-2-3-1, we would be able to have a tactical renaissance.

With the protection that Strootman and Wanyama would offer to the defense, this would allow the fullbacks to bomb forward at will. And with the fullbacks playing high up the pitch, they would be offering us the width we try to keep by playing wingers who tend to hug the touchline. This would allow us to play with inverted/ inside wingers who come inside and either create or finish chances. That way, we'd be crowding out the other team in midfield and bossing games without sacrificing too much of the width that sets us apart from other teams atm.

Mick

Agree0 Disagree0

Fair play, you will have watched him far more than me. I didn't appreciate his passing was quite that good TBH and if that is the case I'm all the more hopeful that we sign Strootman.

We may not agree on who is best to partner him long term but that may be futile for now as I'm far from convinced SAF will sign a 2nd CM this summer anyway! Really hope I'm wrong on that.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Apr 2013 08:15:15
Mick imo that the way we should play, have a more solid midfield base allowing our fullbacks to get forward and provide width. I see the future as playing a high pressing game in which case our playmakers will be in the more advanced position. Having a Strootman Wanyama midfield will mean that Kagawa can be let loose to play as the playmaker. Strootman is a very good passer and Wanyama's passing is under valued imo. So we would be fine. People keep looking to the Scholes/Keane midfield as some kind of template but to be honest that was 10-14 years ago when they were at their best. Football has evolved and moved on since. If you look at all the teams who play with a two man midfield then you'll notice that there is no one as attack minded as Scholes playing in one.

As for what role Strootman could play, well 3/4 years ago he was playing just off the striker. So I think there is scope to mould him into what we need as he has abit of everything.

Sydney! I can't argue with any of your points, however you have missed mine completely. This isn't about results or trophies. This is about an attacking style in keeping with United and their history.

United are based upon certain values and beliefs. it is those that make people think of Manchester United when you simply say "United".

It is based upon a 4-4-2 irrespective of who we played. How many times did United change formation to suit the opposition during the 1999 campaign or during the Premiership campaigns of the 90's?

It is based upon being able to pick 8, 9 or maybe even the whole team that was going to play in the big matches.

It was knowing that the opposition feared us more than we feared them, and it was feeling that United were actually trying to win with a ruthless attitude.

I do not sense any of these any more, and my fear is that even after the transition is complete that much of the above will be lost.

I salute SAF for his achievement this year. He can only beat those put before him with the players at hand.

However, take THIS team back to 1999 against the opposition we faced and we would not have won the treble. and the team of 1999 for me was not the best team SAF produced!

Circumstances change, but the way United play should not. but it is!

Believable6 Unbelievable3

I just think we do not have the personnel to play like City & Chelsea right now so the manager is picking results over entertainment. I think after this summer's spend we will be better suited to playing a more attractive way. Fingers crossed anyway Timbo mate.

Sydney!

Agree4 Disagree0

I agree Sydney. Question though. If SAF respected the values of United and their mantra of attacking football - and picked his best attacking team - would they be any worse of this season? I suspect they would still be top. !

I for one would love SAF to "go for it" more often. He may be a genius, but nobody stops learning. and even he may surpise himself and learn something along the way.

Agree0 Disagree3

During a transisitonal period it is all about results not entertainment unfortunately. You have young players coming through and they have to learn that winning mentality, as that's what's won us so much over the years. So we will see lots of games where we win ugly but the younger players in the squad will become better players for it.

Agree7 Disagree0

Timbo, to be fair in both Barcelona finals we went for it and that cost us. I think the manager had learned from that mate. In the EPL we will see a more exciting United no doubt, but in Europe it will be like the RM game IMO. Tactical and tight.

May just be wishful thinking on my part, seen Thiago Alcantra has been linked a few times recently and with his own dad saying;

'My son would play a lot more in any other team in the world, ' said his father Mazinho. 'He's learning a lot playing with great players but Thiago is very ambitious and needs to play.

'No-one knows what might happen in the future. Football changes a lot and anything can happen. If Thiago wants to go to the 2014 World Cup, he needs to play much more.

'Thiago has the quality to succeed at Barca. But he'd play a lot more at another club. He'd get into any other team in the world.

Any views?
btw I was very impressed with Phil Jones and Rafael last night but not much creativity in midfield yet again, some tired performances.

The way a lot of people are going on you would think we were 12 points down with 7 games to go.

The truth is we lost, but in my opinion we weren't as out of it as people think. Good chances were rare for both teams and it turns out us and City got lucky with one of our goals, it's just City got another one. The result doesn't really hurt the goal difference like the result last season did, and if the results were the other way round (I. e. we lost at the Etihad but won last night) would people be happy? We would still be 12 clear.

There are definitely 10 points we can get from our games. It's less than half of the available for us. I'm sure the result hurt the team, and may be the catalyst for the final push.

As Syd and others have said, that is if City win all their games, which I don't think they will. They aren't really in form; they played well last night but still generally struggled against to get through our defence, and easily beat a Newcastle team who were very poor that day. They have a trip to White Hart Lane soon, and I reckon they might come unstuck then.

Believe in the team, the last thing they need is the supporters doubting them. I'm sure Fergie will go over the consequences with the team, get their spirits up and get that title.

We now head to Stoke and I believe we will win there, and set ourselves up for the remaining fixtures.

The title isn't won until its mathematically won, but if we start believing we've blown it, we will, and that's the last thing any Manchester United supporter should want.

Good to see no ones gone overboard over what wasn't a suprising or vital loss.

People on here make me chuckle. And the number of posters we only see after we lose is insane, where the hell are you guys when we're discussing tactics, formations, transfers or celebrating victories? You only come on to say stupid stuff like "time of Sir Alex to go" when we lose. Its alittle bit pathetic.

Did we see anything yesterday that we haven't seen when we've lost in other games this season? No.

We saw that our midfield isn't strong enough and that Giggs shouldn't play in a two man midfield.

We saw that our wingers are in poor form.

We saw then when we need him Rooney fails to deliever.

We saw that in a big game we tried to sit deep and hit on the counter.

We saw that without Vidic we struggle to keep a clean sheet.

We saw that without proper support that RvP gets cut off in games.

None of these are new things to us, they have been evident to all who watch us all season. So why throw your toys out of the pram over something that anyone with half a brain could tell you was going to happen from the moment the starting line up was announced?

This hasn't been a vintage year for us, but we still hold a 12 point lead over our nearest rival with only 7 games to go. We have won 25 out of 31 games so far this season and are more than capable of winning all our remaining fixtures. Although its not won it would take a monumental collapse to lose it from here. Which is unlikely.

The problems with this team will not go away this season, the main issue is the lack of quality midfielders to unable us to change out tactics and dominate games. We can't do anything about that until after the seasons over and we can enter the transfer market. So is there any point in going over old ground and moaning about something that we all know and can see but nothing can be done about it until after the seasons over.

Lets instead get behind the team and cheer them on to our 20th league title, then what work needs to be done can be done over the summer.

I'm glad someone else said it. We didn't see anything last night that we didn't know already. We know there is work to do come the summer but until then let's get behind them.

TK-Red

Agree4 Disagree1

Shahram, where teams like City and Chelsea could just loan players out to make space in the squad for new arrivals or sell them on the cheap, it's different for United and the majority of self sufficient clubs. We will need to sell Nani & Anderson and possibly more players if we want to bring in more players. If the club want to sell Rooney (if they want to), then unless he is sold we couldn't go out and spend over £100m on players. We love silly season when it arrives, but outgoings will no doubt determine the incoming signings. I think if we had sold Nani early on in the summer, we would have made another signing.

Sydney!

Agree3 Disagree0

Good post Shappy, some posters on here must be seriously dim. We know the midfield is only mid table quality and I expect SAF to finally sort this in the summer as even he can't deny it now. I think Rooney will go as he is paid far too much for what we actually get out if him. Nani, Anderson, Scholes and maybe Rio and Evra will follow and I'd love us to get rid of Young as he is utter dog sh-t.

My choices to come in would be Sandro at LB, Strootman in CM, Gotze in an attacking 3 with Lewandowski to interchange with RVP up top. That would be an outlay of £80!million ish. Selling the players above would raise about £55 million so it would only mean an outlay of £25 million.

Everyone is behind the team but I am close to smashing my TV LOL.

I am pissed because we should have made substitutions earlier when we got back to 1-1.

Mancini made a substitution to win the game and SAF just watched guys like Rooney, Giggs, Welbeck, Evra having no legs left and did nothing about it until it was too late.

If we were playing for a draw then throw some fresh midfielders on the pitch, if we are playing for a win then throw some fresh wingers and forwards on to the pitch. I am not seeing things, our guys were knackered and were not tracking back.

I am pissed at the way the manager set us up to play and not reacting during the game and not the players as they gave it their all.

Shahram

Agree2 Disagree1

We had a decent bench too. I was a bit shocked that we didn't make one or two changes earlier. I do think the manager was gutted about Smalling, Evans & Vidic all being out. Jones in midfield and Vidic at the back would have been stronger defensively. Our problem at the moment is our attack is creating very little and the chances they get they are squandering.

Is there anyone here who honestly did not expect we would buy a midfielder last summer? Instead we bought Powel, Henriques, rvp, Kagawa and Buttner.

3 of 5 have have seen almost zero game time. We spent 3. 5 to 4. 5 depending on who to believe on buttner, another 5 to 6 on Powel and can't remember what we spent on Henriques. How do these guys develop when they get zilch game time whether here or on loan.

I would have rather spent 10 to 15 mill on Cabaye or Dembele and kept Fabio as a back up for Evra.

Come this summer, I am not going to hold my breath as the manager is so stubborn and set in his ways that nothing surprises me anymore.

We have already spent 10 to 15 mill on another winger.

we have Nani, Welbeck, Young, Valencia and now Zaha and talk of Rodriguez and if true there goes the transfer budget.

I can't see any of the top teams wanting Nani or Anderson and there is a high probability they will refuse to move if it is not a club of their choice.

uhh see 3-2 win for Man City, December 2012.

Agree0 Disagree0

Shahram, I cannot argue with any of that. We had to buy Powell & Henriquez due to strong interest from other clubs. Buttner IMO was a cheap option due to running out of cash. Zaha again was wanted by Spurs so United needed to act fast. The manager is looking towards the future evidently, but I agree that he has neglected the midfield due to not wanting to miss out on RvP and the players I have mentioned above.

Sydney!

Agree1 Disagree0

John, he can only work with what he has, yes the midfield is poor but for what ever reason Sir Alex couldn't get the player/s he wanted last summer or in january. So we've made do as Sir Alex has always done when he can't get who he wants. So he is limited as to what he can do differently tactic's wise.

Shahram, We will definately buy players this summer, whether we buy the players you I or anyone else thinks we need is another matter though. We always sign players for the future, that way we can develop them in the way we want to best suit our needs, that way the learn things the "united way". Powell and Zaha will become great players for us, Henriquez and Buttner have the potential to become very good players for us.

This summer however we need to sign players who are more ready for the first team than young players with potential. But I can only see us signing 3/4 more players at most. And imo two of those need to be midfielders.

Agree9 Disagree0

Good post Shappy - but if we all know these things then why does SAF still insist on playing Giggs in a 2 man midfield from the start? We had other options.

I agree we knew all these points before hand and there's no need to over-react but it's just frustrating to see us set up in a way that we have all seen us be run over using during the season.

I agree the performance and result changes nothing. Still get frustrated though due to the above!

Agree0 Disagree0

What I don't get is people have argued how good this squad is etc then after the city game it's "fergy can only play this way due to the players he has" etc etc
The truth is we haven't played great football for a few year, last year Rooneys goals papered over the cracks this year rvps.
At the very top level our midfield is not good enough and can't control a game which means we are always over reliant on our strikers

Agree0 Disagree0

Hb
Could the fact fergy who sees the players day after day and prob knows a thing or to about football and is still picking giggs say something about our other options

Agree0 Disagree0

I think the way we set up for the game was why Sir Alex chose Giggs over Cleverley. We were set up to soak up pressure and hit on the counter, that is why Sir Alex played Welbeck and Young as both can hold up the ball and bring others into the game while they have the pace to run in behind on the counter. Rooney was played for his industry and the fact that he could grab a goal if presented with a chance. So with our front four set up like that it is vital that the midfield get the ball forward as quickly as possible, Giggsbeing a former winger will always look for a forward pass first plus he'll run forward with the ball if the chance is there. Cleverley is more of a patient player who will make the best pass to keep possession rather than to get the ball forward. So Giggs was actually the better player to play based on the tactics we were playing. It's just a shame he hasn't got the legs to do all the other work expected of a midfielder in todays game.

If we had a player like Strootman or Wanyama then the set up would have been completely different.

Agree2 Disagree0

Jred

There must be some reason that the rest of us ain't seeing, that's for sure! Hopefully, SAF starting Giggs ahead of Cleverly is a sign that we will finally get our CM transfer this summer.

On the squad debate - we haven't played great for a lot of the season and as many have said our starting XI lacks the quality to dominate good teams. I stand by what I've said though that this is a very good squad - simply because we can start with a bench from players like Hernandez, Welbeck, Nani, Valencia, Kagawa, Giggs, Scholes, Cleverly, Rio, Jones, Smalling. Don't think we've had that much strength in depth before. I think at times this season we've been caught in 2 minds (between old and new systems) which hasn't helped the likes Valencia and Young who have been poor all term.

Agree1 Disagree0

Hb
It looks a good squad because of what we have on the bench but compare our best 16 players to the best 16 of previous years and it suddenly doesn't look quite as strong
Also a lot of the players you mentioned are good players but are not really in great form
Would clevs or kags done any better than giggs I'm not so sure, nani and Valencia have also struggled, yesterday may of been our strongest team but if Rooney or rvp don't pull something out the bag we tend to struggle

Agree0 Disagree0

Jred

Totally agree. Staring XI (and possibly full match day squad) not as strong as 99 or '08 - but beyond that we have far more strength in depth now I'd say. I know squads have got bigger anyway but to use City as an example - Mancini only has around 17/18 players he trusts to perform for him IMO whilst SAF has a squad well into the 20's and trusts them all. That is where our strength has been this season I'd say.

Agree0 Disagree0

Also, jred - yes Nani & Valencia have struggled and Kagawa is taking time to settle but that does not automatically make them poor squad players. Valencia was immense not long ago, Nani on his day is class, Kagawa was consistenly class at Dortmund. Just because we haven't used the right system or certain players have been off form, does not mean our squad is suddenly worse. Valencia & Kagawa may well still be here and playing much better next season.

"Shahram, We will definately buy players this summer, whether we buy the players you I or anyone else thinks we need is another matter though. We always sign players for the future, that way we can develop them in the way we want to best suit our needs, that way the learn things the "united way". Powell and Zaha will become great players for us, Henriquez and Buttner have the potential to become very good players for us. "

Shappy

Why does everyone think these players will be great. Look at our spending on guys like Nani, Anderson, Bebe, etc etc and they have turned out to be duds. I am very cautious with Zaha as most of the stuff he does in the championship that ends up on UTube video's is difficult to do in the Pl and because of the step up in competition.

If powell is as good everyone likes to believe why is he not even getting a sniff of game time. There are a lot of 18 and 19 year olds out there who are playing first team football for big clubs even on a limited basis. The management has seen enough footballers to know who warrants some game time and is it maybe because he is not as good as good we all like too think he is.

I think our problem in the last few years lies in that exact sort of thinking (arsenal approach) buying potential to save money, which comes with a lot of risk and does not change much with our current setup.

In the old days we went out and bought the finished article who could contribute immediately to the team.

Teams like Barcelona, Real, Bayern, Chelsea, City go out and buy top players for areas they know they need quality additions and in parallel buy young potential who will be ready in a few years if they continue their development.

Jred brings up some really good points. We have not played well for some years now and the squad has a lot of what I call workers who will huff and puff and put the effort in but not enough quality from a first 11 perspective.

If Giggs is the best we have in the midfield for big games then we are truely screwed, because he is not good enough to play there against the likes of Schweinsteiger, Martinez, Alonso, Marchisio, Vidal, Xavi, Khedira, Dembele, Cabaye just to name a few.

It is a concern when our supposed best 11 against top competition is set up to defend and defend, which is what a lower table team does against a better team. The law of averages does not work in your favor when the opposing team enjoys long spells of possession in your half and are constantly putting pressure on you.

Finally, I hope we buy some finished articles this summer that are genuine starters in the first 11 and can influence the quality of our play because we do have the money and use what the youth system is for to develop talent and bring through players.

Shahram, there is a big differance between being ready to play games in the Prem and being ready to play games for United in the Prem. When they play for us they are imediately placed under the microscope by the media and hailed as some sort or messiah. They need to he mentally ready for that. Powell had come from playing for Crewe in league two, you can't just chuck him in. When he has played he has looked every bit good enough, I suspect the coaching staff wanted to spend a year moulding him into the United way and he'll go out on loan until Christmas nexr season to see how he copes. I also see his long term position being the central attacker of the three in a 4231 formation, for that role he currently has Rooney and Kagawa ahead of him. I see him as Rooneys replacement. Zaha has a lot of potential, for me he is similar to Nani but the vital difference is Zaha knows what he's doing and Nanj is abit of a headless chicken and doesn't think. So if we can coach him in the right manner so there is an end product then he'll be a great player.

I agree with syd here that a lot posters on here are over reacting after the city loss.

Don't forget city spent silly amount on their team and still are 12 points behind.

we're in a transition and yet are miles ahead of the next team.

We have two or three ageing players that were important to united as messi is to Barcelona or Ronaldo to Madrid yet we are ahead by a mile.

We haven't played how we're used to seeing Manchester united play yet we're miles ahead.

So called City have the best midfield yet they lose to Southampton.

Guys chill out we're in a process of having a new first 11. lots of players retiring. some players are integrating well in the team, some will take longer then others (kagawa).

We don't spend silly on players that ruin your whole team just look at city and Madrid this year, with full of stars but none of them are committed as Valencia, hernandes or even Rafael.

Yes we need few changes in summer, but until summer support your team rather then criticize.

We must've done something to be at the top. Fergie must be in the position he's at for a reason.

There is a reason that none of us have a job at Manchester united.

I reckon everyone has a opinion as to what they feel about Manchester united, but remember one thing there are 20 teams in the premier league and we at the top.

There are few clubs running on oil or foreign owners yet we continue to develop our current team with valuable players (not all are stars), But fergie seen something in this team that we haven't realised.

We have to remember when we play a match we don't play against our selves we play a opponent. In a sport there's always one winner and in football anyone can beat anyone by having a little bit of luck and have to be tactically on point. Just look at celtic what they did to Barcelona. Yet they wouldn't even be 5th or 6th in premier league.

Yesterday my friend sent me a message sayin that (we didn't even score one goal, that city scored 3 goals. ) I started laughing and said to him you should be embarrassed to even message me as you should first look table how far behind they are even with their Millions.

Mate Barcelona were rubbish until Rijkaard set up a team ( messi, iniesta, xavi, puyol ) for guardiola to take over. they didn't win much during that time. But look where they are now. They invested time in youth worked hard. They also moved on with tactics.

I am just happy to be supporting a team that fund for transfers with their revenue are one of the if not the biggest club in the world. There are lots more points to be a happy supporter. There will be times when Manchester united lose but i'd still support them and back the management as there is a reason why we're here typing posts and Fergie managing.

The only time I think you can criticize fergie is after two years and see who fergie has replaced the players with.

Until then keep on supporting United.

Don't mix criticizing our set up for not supporting the team. If people were not supporting the team they would not be arsed to post their frustration.

Barcelona's set up and us are miles apart. Their coaching at the youth level is unbelievable. The class of 92 which had very little to do with the manager was a once in a lifetime thing and those players were in our setup already when SAF joined with Giggs being the exception. Barcelona today has 4 or players in their youth set up that would cost 15 million each and not for sale with more coming through.

We can't get 15 million for half the guys in the first team squad.

Our youth system produces zilch and mainly players who are good enough to play as squad players for a few years and then off to a lower table teams. We have not produced a star from our youth set up in 20 years (excluding the 1992 bunch).

Before you start talking about oil rich clubs, we were the cash rich club in the 90's and 2000's having the biggest stadium and biggest chunk of money to buy players and assemble teams.

We broke transfer records all the time so don't make it out to be as if the manger works with a tiny budget and ha has to build up the team from grass roots. We have spent 110 million in the last 3 years alone.

Every player on that pitch last night with the exception of giggs, rafael and Welbeck has been acquired for large chunks of money. Rafael being the only genuine starter for me.

Finally, I am happy with our league position but fed up with our quality of football. This is not about last night but last 2 years we have been poor too many games for a club of our size.

Come on guys! There is some pessimistic Manchester United fans about. So we lost, we are now only 12 points ahead. Come on, how has Man City become this fantastic team now that will win all their remaining games, sorry if that was the case why are they 12 points behind!
We have to lose five games out of 7 in order for City to be on top, out right. Please if you think Manchester United will lose five games then please, why are you supporting this team, surely it would be more interesting for you to support the invincible Man City, who will inevitably overturn this gap and rightfully regain their title, with their unquestionable consistancy!
The title is the main prize this, we win that, we acheive what we set out to this year.
However, the first 11 is not strong enough, as was shown yesterday yet again! Giggs shown his age and how it not only effects your physicallity but also your mentality. Ashley young, is not even good enough to be a squad player, and all the people saying sell valencia, should really consider looking back on his time at this club. Valencia (Fantastic Servant) - Young (What has he done in his career?) One thing came out of yesterday and that was the class of a young future Man United and England captain. What a player we have in Phil jones, his position is centre half! Add to that Evans and Smalling, incredible!
Dont worry guys, I would rather be in our position than Citys position! Finally, Fergy is getting on now and has shown his age when coming to tactics against more younger manager. However he has once again managed to utilise his squad and man management skills to create a winning machine. So let's not slag Ferguson of, he still has a season or two left, however he needs to get the right number 2. i'm sure where all in agreement that Mike Phelan is not strong enough and Rene seems to be outcasted! What happened to the Ferguson that used to alternate his backroom staff on a regular basis, and how come Phelan hasn't got a management job yet?
Sorry for the long post eds, i've not been on for a while, but I just wanted to try and reassure some of the fans.
Finally mr Mancini you are a fantastic manager that was very unlucky this season, if only you got your main targets! The fans should be protesting to get the board out! I think I am that unlucky, if only I got excepted into Eton maybe I would be Prime Minister right now, bloody World!

aaallj5

Believable2 Unbelievable1

I believe that we are set up the way we are as we haven't the pace to play a more aggressive pressing game. If we lose possession with a high defensive line we will get killed as apart from Smalling and maybe Evans our centre is vulnerable to pace including central midfield. We are forced to play a slower game so as not to lose the team shape. I believe after watching the Chelsea game and City last night that managers have now figured that if they keep a pacy forward as a sub on the bench until the latter stages of a game they have every chance of making an impact due to fatigue setting in, i. e Hazzard or Aguero and it has worked on at least two occasions now. Admittedly not every team have players of this quality to put on late but I believe tactically a lack of pace in the spine of the team has become a factor.

The biggest challenge to being a United supporter right now is trying to balance a totally dull, non-United style of football with winning the Premier League. It is very hard, almost impossible, to do. Is winning the Premier League great. hell yes. Is being forced to use negative tactics because the opposition on a one-off basis are better than you a horrible feeling. hell yes. That in itself is a form of defeat.

That's where we are guys. On a one-off basis, I believe City will beat United 60-70% of the time as it stands. I also worry that this percentage will increase with other teams. Don't even consider those odds on the European stage. I no longer feel confident at home to at least 15 European teams!

I for one will never be happy with counter-attacking tactics - especially when playing at home, even if it means not winning trophies. We had this approach against Madrid, Chelsea (replay) and now City last night. We came out second in all of these. In previous years we came through these periods as regular victors - with style. No more. Both aspects are for the moment at least. lost.

We've also even fallen back to this counter-attacking approach during many other games when this would never have been considered. We may have been forced to defend on many an occasion of course, but very rarely use that as an attaching tactic from the offset. It simply goes against all of the traditions that SAF has wanted to maintain at Old Trafford.

The argument that a poor midfield means that we can only play counter-attacking football is not good enough - primarily because our wingers (and Rooney) are so poor anyway.

We've won the league this year the Arsenal way. Plenty of 1-0 wins, gritty defense, and a reliance on one or two quality players. This is NOT United. Indeed I've heard many a United crowd mock Arsenal for this approach!

I see this as a major crossroads in the United-style. I for one will always want 4-4-2, with the right personnel this has as much chance as any other system. There are also very few that are as enjoyable to watch.

Many of United's past teams under SAF rank as some of the most attractive to watch. Mid 90's especially.

The reality is that "inferior" teams relinquish possession to "superior" teams. Its a natural instinct within players and managers. United, to a large degree were always the "superior" team. Pace, power and self-belief were evident in all of SAF's previous teams. Very few of these qualities seem to exist right now, and its plain to see that United are happy to have less possession!

We watch (whether at OT or on TV)United "to watch United", not to admire their defensive qualities - which in themselves, particularly higher up the pitch - are woeful.

So, would I sacrifice the league for a season that included far more attractive football from United. ?

I don't know.

Mate we will not win our last 7 and I am a gambling man and looking at City's schedule, I would bet that they are more likely to win their last 7 than us winning the last 7. Actually we have no chance of winning the last seven.

I said a few weeks ago let's see how we perform in the games against our rivals coming up when people were talking about how great this team is, which I don't agree for a minute. Great teams dominate play and possession, go forward in numbers and defend well. They have opposition teams mentally and score wise finished with 20 minutes to go. We have non of those offensive and control attributes but do defend well.

If we get turned over at Emirates and have to fight for our lives for a draw against Chelsea at home, this whole bs about how good we are should stop.

I thought getting our ass kicked by Barca in the CL final for a second time was finally the wake up call but we seem to want to continue playing the same style and same formation with personnel that is worse than 5 years ago.

Shahram

Agree5 Disagree1

The lead isn't the problem. There is no doubt that we will win the title. The problem is this we have just played badly and lost to our League rivals at our own patch. We were overrun in midfield again and we couldn't keep the ball. We will win the League, and we deserve it due to our consistency, but the squad isn't good enough. How we have surrendered to City & Chelsea has shocked me, we seem to have lost our spark since losing to Madrid.

Agree2 Disagree0

Of course we want to be 12 points ahead, but going forward, do you honestly think the performance last night was great or even acceptable? Do you think our performance against Chelsea was great or acceptable? Add to that the rubbish we played against reading and Sunderland and you've got to accept that we are not as good as we think we are.
This is not an overreaction, but if you honestly think this team could win the league next year playing like this, then I think you're not being honest.
Our tactics are stuck in the 90's, our manager will not change the method of play, he will not react during the game when things are going wrong, he used to be the master of this.
City dominated the game completely, that is worrying and disappointing, if you are willing to accept it and if the players and manager are willing to accept it, then we're in for a mega wake up call next year!

Hopefully the manager finally sorts out the midfield this summer, but even with a poor midfield we have been very strong this season.

City did not completely dominate the game at all last night. Apart from the deflected Milner shot and the Aguero goal they offered little more. Possession was close and shots on and off target were close. It was very much in the balance. I am more concerned about the attack more than our midfield at this point in time. They are creating very little and struggling to score goals.

The manager is trying to redevelop the squad and it is much harder to do when you haven't got a endless pot of gold like City and Chelsea for example. Our transition has been a gradual thing and we are still deep into that transition as we speak. I think what the manager is doing is fantastic and there isn't too many manager who could build a new squad and still challenge for titles. it's not easy even with an endless amount of cash, ask Roman.

Is there something going on in the background that we're not aware of, which is leading to Giggs starting a lot of game in central midfield? Sir Alex Ferguson is not a fool, and certainly does not suffer fools either, so something isn't sitting quite true with me at the moment.

Is Ferguson starting Giggs in front of others to provoke a response?

Is Ferguson allowing Phelan to dictate tactics for educational purposes, and it's Mike who's making the critical error (s)?

Is Ferguson making a case to the powers that be? We all know that the Glaziers watch the big games, so what an opportunity to highlight a particular weakness in the team, therefore aiding a request for funds in the Summer?

I don't buy for a second that Ferguson is 'losing the plot' and I've always been a believer of trying obtain the full story prior to making a judgement. What we do know, is that Ferguson is a master in psychology, and uses every tool around him to provoke the 'response' that he wants.

If saf is allowing phelan to pick teams, then I think he's completely lost the plot. Phelan can't even spell his name! He should never be second in command.
If saf is playing crap teams just to highlight deficiencies in our team, then firstly, he's lost it, and secondly, the Glazers will turn around and point the finger at Ferguson for buying the crap players we've got, such as young, Valencia, Anderson, nani, bebe, and before that obertan and tosic.

Definately agree that Phelan is a total 'Yes' man, Fresh! I also believe it's no coincidence that since Quieroz left, our fluidity in attack has all but disappeared. We've gone the rigid 4-4-2 in the 90's, to the wonderful 4-3-3 during 07/08 (Rooney, Ronaldo & Tevez), into a formation that's neither one or the other in my eyes.

I also don't believe that Ferguson would go out and lose on purpose to send a message the Glaziers. What I suggested was that it was an opportunity to highlight a weakness. Obviously with the hope that we'd scrap a result at the same time.

If everyone agree's that Phelan brings nothing to the table. Who would people realistically like to see come in as a No. 2 to replace Mike?

Sorry but do you honestly think sir alex will play giggs in the middle in our biggest game of the season to provoke a reaction? personally I doubt it. for me he chose what he thought was his best possible side to get a result, he got it wrong. we all know he likes to play with two wingers, and due to lack of quality in certain areas we have sat deep all season and tried to catch teams on the break. i'm not going to moan to much over one result but over the course of the season I think we have proven that we need significant investment in the middle. only then, and with a change of tactics can we play higher up the pitch allowing us to return to controlling the majority of games.

I thought a good nights sleep would maybe give me a more positive perspective of the game and our beloved team but nothing has changed and reading a lot of the posts I see many saying the same thing.

I guess people will argue that this is an overreaction and their view is a functions of the fact that we are leading the league by 12 points but should not mask how average and mostly poor we have been.

I have been watching us play for over 30 years now and whilst we have been beaten in big games and had our ups and downs, I can't ever remember going for this long a stretch of games where we have just not been good and the points flatter to deceive.

Granted we are getting results but in the old days when we had a couple of bad games we would then go out and put a beating on teams with some beautiful football.

All season I have been telling myself we are going to come good next game but this is just not happening. I mean struggling to beat reading at home is a clear sign of a team that is constant patchwork week in week out.

I honestly think this idea of evolution is bs and believe this squad needs to be revamped with 4 or 5 players coming in and 6 being let go and bringing in some of the younger guys through.

The Pl is not that good and I expect the last two teams in european competition to be send home packing this week and that is a clear sign of an average league and a better than average team leading it.

I do still believe we will win the league but expect us to limp home and people saying it might be over by the Arsenal game are dreaming.

2 wins in the next three games is essential.

What would be very worrying is going into the last four games needing 2 wins with Arsenal and West Brom away and Chelsea and Swansea at home.

Agree with everything you say Shahram if we win the league we are papering over the cracks. When I saw Giggs last night in midfield my heart sank, the guy is a legend but way past playing 90 minutes and is never or will ever be a central midfielder. We have never replaced Keane or for that mater Scholes and until we do so we are going to struggle, I think now is a good time to give Van Persie and Carrick a breather as both look knackered. Evra is another who needs to be replaced as his postional play is brutal and is too casual in defence. Finally a mention for Jones who was brillant last night this guy has the potentional to be world class but he needs to nail down a position in the team and for me it is in central defence. Our next game is vital and a win is a must.

I think it was there for all to see just how short of top class players we really are in the Midfield area. We got dominated last night, City controlled the game from start to finish.
You can't stop a world class midfield that have the likes of David Silva and Yaya Toure with a 39 year old left winger drafted in to bail Man United out of the rubbish again. When will Fergie realise that the central midfiled area needs strenghening?
This is becoming boring posting the same thing on this website, all of us on here can see the problem, 76,000 supporters in Old Trafford can see the problem yet Fergie still things that this midfield we have is good enough.
A massive shake up is needed, Anderson has to go, Nani has to go and I would get rid of Valencia as well. We need two (top class) central midfielders like Strootman who can get hold of the game by the scruff of the neck and also a creative player like Gotze.
Another center half is also needed, Vidic gets injured to much these days and Ferdinand has one more year left at the most.
We also need a another top class winger to replace Nani and a left full back who is good going forward but actually knows how to defend.
I think if Vidic or Evans were fit Jones would have played in the center midfield area, I thought Jones was superb by the way.
Very dissapointed, and in my opionion the league isn't over. We have a hard run in and I think it's going to be a lot closer than people think.

So who are realistic transfer targets?

Agree0 Disagree0

Strootman for sure and I have to believe seeing Rooney struggle Lewandowski must be up there in terms of priorities. I think we will sign one Attacking midfielder as well. I hope there is a left back in there but not sure, Evra is rubbish and needs to be shipped out as city had a field day on his side yesterday.

The rest depends on if we can successfully move Anderson, Nani, Bebe, Macheda. I do hope we will have enough money for a proper left winger with a left foot.

Shahram

Agree1 Disagree2

I think last night shown where we need to buy. Can we use Jones & Rooney in midfield and buy a CB, midfielder & striker? Rooney will need to sharpen up and be better in possession (i'm not convinced). Jones will need time to mould into a midfielder. Cannot forget he's still young. Perhaps Garay, Strootman & Lewandowski?

We clearly need an inverted winger, someone who can drift out wide, but also score a significant amount of goals a season too. Someone like Mata or Nasri when at Arsenal. I think Rodriguez is an obvious candidate as we have already bid for him, but unconvinced we will meet Porto's asking price.

We still need a solid LB in place, Evra has been good going forward this season, but still struggles defensively. It's time for the manager to sort out the LB and midfield areas. Baines is getting on a bit now, but he is the finished article and for £15m would be a good buy. His corners and free-kicks mean both Rooney and RvP will be in the box instead of taking the set-piece.

So I think Baines, Garay, Strootman, Rodriguez & Lewandowski would be a great summer, however I think Begovic may come in, but I do think other areas are more important unless DDG wants to go back to Spain. That is a costly outlay, but with Nani, Anderson and one or two others leaving it's doable.

Would Carrick, Cleverley, Strootman, Rooney, Jones & Powell be good enough midfield options?

I am sick of watching this boring dross. I've been going home & away for over 20 years & this team bores me to death. The midfield & wingers are not utd class. Carrick aside it has to be th weakest midfield i've seen for a long time. Even when we weren't winning trophies in the 80's at least we played with passion & pace, not now mundane boring football. Rooney in midfield is a non starter and that is exactly what is wrong with this team. Instead of accepting the personnel needs change SAF is constantly waiting for some of these players to miraculously come through.

We would be better ditching the idea of Anderson, Rooney as midfielders and just go and buy two proper midfielders as starters and rotate in guys like Cleverly, Powell, Kagagwa.

This has been going on now since 2008 and most of us have had enough of it.

Jones whilst great in terms of being combative lacks the technical ability, passing and the maturity at the moment and maybe can be developed
there long term.

We need to bite the Bullet and buy a Modric type and strootman type player with carrick in there as well.

With that sort of midfield teams can't flood the wings because they know we are toothless down the middle and everything comes from the wings.

This will actually open up the wings for us and our wingers won't look so ineffective. Currently for an opposing manger It is so easy to defend against united as we are very predictable.

When was the last time we had a midfielder run into the box and score or score with a shot?

Finally, Evra needs replacing.

Why should we have Rooney and Jones as options? For christ sake just go out an buy two new central midfielders, it's simple really, it's not rocket science is it.
Why have players playing in the wrong positions. It's been like this for three seasons now.
Ryan Giggs playing central, Paul Scholes coming out of retirement, Phil Jones covering when we are short in the midfield. It's virtually every week now.
Don't give me this sh*t about nobody being available and no value in the transfer market because that is just a cop out.

It's a miracle that we 12 points ahead with this side and if we stand still in the transfer market next year we will struggle. This year will make City, Chelsea and Arsenal more determined for next year. When you look at our team 4-5 years ago and look at it now we are have gone backwards.

As I said yesterday, (quite late so I don't think it would of been read much). We need to build our team around De Gea, Rafael, Vidic, Jones, Carrick, RVP & Welbeck. For me they are the stars of this current crop. Rooney would also not be a loss, he was crap yesterday and its noticeable that he is always the one that is substituted. even before Young! If Rooney's departure to PSG meant that we got Ronaldo/Gotze or someone like Marchisio then I would carry him there myself (and you'd have to be a strong lad to carry that load around).

The unfortunate thing is though, we will not address the left back area, and we will put everything into Zaha and probably not purchase another winger - unless Ronaldo becomes available. We could also use 2 midfieldes, but again, I don't think we will fully solve the area, we will sign Strootman but also hopefully Modric.

Believable3 Unbelievable5

I was dissappointed with wayne yesterday. he has no influence on games now. I do wonder where he will be next year. also what position is his best?

Agree3 Disagree0

Fresh I honestly don't think we can use Vidic, Van Persie, Carrick or Welbeck to build a team around. Vidic due to his age and the fact he can only play half our games. Van Persie as he only has a couple of seasons left at the very top. Carrick the same as RVP and Welbeck as he doesn't have enough quality to do this, he is a very good squad player though.

If you are going to build a team around players it has to be for the long term as you can't keep rebuilding in that way every 2 years. You need to have quality players around 23/24 to build around in my eyes, unless you manage to uncover some really exceptional players who are younger, then you can have a few older quality players like RVP, Carrick and Vidic in for experience and then some younger players to develop into the quality 23/24year olds that the next team is built around.

At this moment we don't have that but if SAF acts this summer we could have next season. Personally (and this is just my opinion), I would build a squad around De Gea, Rafael, Evans, Jones, Sandro, Strootman, Gotze, Kagawa, Lewandowski. Then with Vidic, Rio, Carrick, RVP, Valencia in there for experience and Zaha, Smalling, Powell and some from the u21's in for the future along with players like Welbeck, Cleverley, Fabio, Hernandez, Lindegaard making up a very strong squad capable of rotating throughout the season.

My first team would be

De Gea
Rafael. Jones/Vidic. Evans. Sandro
Carrick. Strootman
Zaha. Kagawa. Gotze
RVP/Lewandowski

I'd sell Nani, Young, Evra, Rooney and Anderson to help fund the purchases. We would then, in my eyes, have a team capable of competing at the very top for years to come.

Just my opinion though.

In the past, united will sit there and watch our opponents die as we get to the end of the season. Why? Because we had an engine room containing, Keane, Beckham, Butt and scholes. We also had a world class winger in giggs and later Ronaldo.
Now, we play city, who have the best midfield in the league and put four of them out on the pitch, and our engine room contained carrick (32) and giggs (40). Then we play Ashley young who has not got a clue, and welbeck, who is not a winger.
There is absolutely no energy in our engine room, even if we don't have the right personnel, we would have been better to start with kagawa, carrick and cleverley, and then giggs might have been an option.
This is total madness, we tired last year and gave the league away, and we look knackered now, we cannot go into games against the top teams with two aging midfielders when they all have four excellent midfielders.
Now, is saf going to do anything about this for next season, and I'm also referring to our style of play? I don't think so. I think he will carry on playing with two wingers. I think barca and Dortmund have shown the way forward, but we are stuck in a time warp.
Sorry for the long post, but it is disappointing to see our midfield totally dominated by Chelsea, city, spurs, Everton, Newcastle, liverpool and even Fulham, and I have not even mentioned the European teams.

Stagmufc

Agree3 Disagree1

No Midfield I agree with everything you said.

Barca and Dortmund do play with 2 wingers but they play a midfield 3 in a 451 formation with a lone striker.

If you look at the teams playing a traditional 442 with 2 wingers like Real Madrid or Munich, they have Alonzo/ Khadeira and shcweinteiger/ Martinez bossing the middle of the pitch.

Unfortunately we would have to be crazy to think any of our midfielders with Carrick being the exception are close to that sort of quality.

I hope we go to 451 formation for the remaining away games as that would allow us to play higher up the pitch and believe it or not create more chances with a midfield 5 drifting wide when needed. If that means Rooney or RVP sit on the bench so be it.

It sounds odd but I would have rather had a Carrick, Cleverly, Scholes, Giggs, Welbeck midfield with RVP as the lone striker last night as we would have retained possession better and controlled the game better.

Shahram

Totally agree shahram, somewhere down the line, the management have to realize that quality is required and especially in the middle of the park. Two world class midfielders strootman/wanyama and modric/goetze. If we also insist on playing with wingers, then one of them, if not both, has to be world class. That means Ronaldo or Bale type of player.

Very disappointing to lose last night, unlikely to affect the title but a very clear wake up call as to how good this team is. In reality the team selection, in midfield, was poor and we were always likely to struggle with just Carrick and Giggs. Great servant as Giggs has been he's only useful now for 20 minute cameos and should retire at the end of the season. Carrick is good when we have lots of the ball and time, something you don't get against the better teams.
Jones was excellent at CB and that needs to be his position. I think he's a little cumbersome to be a great midfielder and to thank that's an answer to our midfield problems is misguided. Young was non existent and is at best a squad player, I thought Valencia did ok when he came on but by then it was too late. The biggest disappointment was Rooney who had little control, poor awareness and contributed very little. He is not a midfielder or even someone who can play in the gap. RVP got very little service or support but worked hard and delivered a great cross for the goal.
We'll be champions but it will be tougher next year and if we want to win the big games there needs to be significant change. SAF perhaps needs to consider whether it's fair to a new manager for the season after next to start the rebuilding now or whether it would be best for the club to go at the end of this season and let the new manager rebuild.

Stoke is in danger of being dragged into relegation and need a result, Villa is fighting for their life and play some very attractive football and have won 3 of the last 4 and were very unlucky to lose to the scourers.

Although West ham and Swansea are safe both those teams are difficult to play against and have the sort of personnel that can give us trouble.

We have some excellent players in some positions but those three just lack a bit of class in the present team.

On last night, Jones was immense, so don't understand people not rating him as a central defender on here. I thought Rio, evra, young and wellbeck had particularly poor games. Rooney was just unfit.

I think we can all agree Carrick has played some wonderful football this season. However, my question would be, what would he be capable of if he had a technically gifted centre midfield enforcer around him? (A Roy Keane type)

I think we missed that today, it was a shame Jones had to play CB. The result might've been different had Jones been there to combat the likes of Toure.
Without that enforcer, Carrick has less time to do what he does best, play his typical smooth passing game. Instead; he concedes possession or is resigned to passing the ball backward, or sideways.

What players are out there that fill that role? Is there anyone who could keep Yaya Toure in their pocket most of the match?

Regardless, we lacked pace and good decision making today, Ashley Young and Evra were wasteful, RVP missed a glorious opportunity to play Young through on goal anyway. Often we seem to get the ball into a good area then deliver a poor final ball or cross - symptomatic of our some of our play this season.

Anyway let's look on the bright side, Jones was class and we are still on track for the title.

dithering with a capital D

I posted yesterday that a midfield of Carrick and Giggs would not be good enough nor Cleverley or Kagawa. Something must have got to Ferguson because to select Giggs was a shocking decision against City's midfield. Fast forward to however many minutes of dross and at a key moment our most experienced player tries a fancy flick and gives the opposition their first goal. Why was Giggs not immediately withdrawn for that, dithering. So we move forward in time and watch our tiring team getting deeper and deeper with a 39 year old in play, then we see Aguero come on. Surely our Manager must see they are overrunning us in the middle and make a substitution, fresh legs. No we dithered again and only when their second goal went in did our manager do something, far too late.
Just sit back and think how decisive Mourinho is. At key moments the difference in top sides can be seconds making decisions yet we cannot make them in minutes, no not minutes tens of minutes. Is it stubbornness or is it just that he can't see it or he can see it but thinks Giggs still has it against City's quality midfield.

In the early stages Welbeck ran through, Rooney free on his right and Welbeck totally messed it up. The difference between decent and top class is that the top players would have naturally made the right decision. Welbeck isn't a top player.

I haven't listened to Ferguson post match, I don't need to because it will be more platitudes to hide a poor midfield and what was plainly dithering and indecision. Whether we win the league or not the dithering was plain against Madrid and tonight. Ferguson got stuck between defending and attacking so we did neither. It was almost like last season at their ground where we tried to grind out a draw but this time we weren't sure what to do.

So it's 12 points now and the pressure is on, win the next game or there is potentially a slip appearing and have we really got the character to deal with that. Perhaps Giggs thinks he can keep back heeling trick shots because no Captain on the field said a word to him. No leader and I really hope we have enough to get us over the line. It is so frustrating because it is so obvious.

Red Man

Believable11 Unbelievable2

"12 points now, and the pressure is on".

No it's not Red Man, that's a ridiculous thing to say. 3 points clear and I could understand it, but the pressure is on City to win all the rest of their games.

Take a look and we have run out of steam, we are not creating chances.

Giggs playing central midfield

We have pressure because unless you lived on another planet last season we blew 8 points. This time we still have Arsenal and Chelsea to play and we don't know what last year did to their heads. Since the Madrid game they haven't been right and for me we need to win our next two games. However if we don't I see pressure. I remember when we buckled and gave away 12 points to Arsenal, maybe not in such a short space of time but we had a far better team back then. People need to wake up and stop being arrogant this isn't won yet, history tells you that plus the way we have tailed off.

Red Man

Agree5 Disagree1

I kinda agree with both StevieK and Redman points

Last night was a hard defeat to take with it being City - my heart is saying we are ok still plenty of games to win it but my head is playing through the remaining fixtures and thinking its last year all over again - stoke and west ham fixtures will be the deciding games - if we play like we have been I can see us dropping points what with chelsea and arsenal still to play things could get tight very quickly.

If we were playing well I could take it but since the Madrid game we have looked disjointed, Wingers and forwards haven't been doing their jobs - rooney looked well off the pace yesterday - young had another mare, RVP has dried up goal wise but is still contributing which is what we need from the rest of the guys.

After 60mins last night I was yelling for Cleverley and Kagawa to replace Giggs and Rooney but fergie doesn't change it - he decides to bring kagawa on in injury time - he is the sort of player that needs time to bed into the game - so frustrating at times and we all know united don't like to do things the easy way

Steviek, we have away games against stoke, west ham and arsenal coming up, and a home tie against villa, who are fighting for their lives. So do u honestly think the title is done and dusted?
The poster was right about mourinho and all the top managers, they make instant decisions when things go wrong. Saf was the best at it, his substitutions have won us countless games, but not anymore, we are always slow to react, games against Chelsea, Real, City and spurs home and away have all proved this point.
In his post match interview, he said that we played very well! If that his assessment of our performance, then its time to move on. We were outplayed by city for most of the game, apart from a short period after we equalized. City deserved to win. So wake up guys, the league is not over, let's hope our manager and players realize this too.

Spot on redman last night was pathetic, giggs should be ashamed of that performance and a few others. like you I blame fergie for his tactics, as you say he went for a 0-0 or a 1-0 and it backfired like last season. steviek we may be 12 points clear but we have lost any momentum we had and handied it straight to city. how many attempts on goal did we have at sunderland and last night? that's the worrying thing for me. all this talk of our best ever squad don't make me laugh sunday league players could of done better than some of our so called superstars last night. it might hurt all utd fans that defeat but I can assure you it hurts more when you have to go into work this morning and face the bluenoses you work with.
