Why unlucky Chris? I'm not as small minded as you. I want the team to win every game. When you mature a bit you'll understand that.

🤣🤣🤣🔴🔴🔴🔴 cheers Ken enjoy your night sunshine.

Hope OT is rocking today before the game and then it's up to the players to maintain a high tempo and passion to keep the atmosphere up, c'mon united!

It was rocking from moment 1 until well after. What an incredible atmosphere!

Keefy

You missed a game for the ages. We had great seats and had the scouse army to our right and credit to them they were loud from 1 hour before kick off time and all the way through. OT was buzzing and stretford end got the crowd going and even the middle sections joint in. Our area was nuts giving the scousers rubbish and vice versa. The train ride from london was packed with united supporters and so many irish lads.

I bet us to win and we were the better team bar some spells in the game. Credit to the manager and players.

18 Mar 2024 10:52:10
Didnt miss it Ahmad! I was there. I did message you on our original text but you didn't get it.

I was sat next to their fans! What an incredible atmosphere. I am still buzzing.

Casemiro injured again? According to Brazil he is. I guess we will know soon enough!

I've been wondering about our squad and what sort of overhaul is needed so as to understand the size of the task facing INEOS. I decided to create three categories and sort our squad into them. They are "Definitely keep", "Fine for now", and "Need to sell".

I think "definitely keep" and "need to sell" are pretty self explanatory. "Fine for now" are players who can do a job next season as a squad player, but longer term they need to be replaced/ upgraded. Again if a good offer comes in then it should probably be accepted, but the reality is we can't sell/ replace 20 players in one summer, so we will have to keep some players his summer who don't have a long term future.

So there are only 6 players in my definitely keep list: Onana, Martinez, Mount, Mainoo, Garnacho, and Hojlund.
A special mention goes to Dalot who has had a quietly great season (individually) and might be pushing himself towards this category. Ultimately the reason he didn't make the cut was that if someone offered 50 or 60m for him I'd reluctantly accept. The others I wouldn't accept any deal for them regardless of the fee as I feel they are crucial for us to keep a core of players to build around going forward.

The fine for now list looks like this: Dalot, Shaw, Bruno, Rashford, Lindelof, Bayindir, Heaton, Malacia, Eriksen, Amad, Evans, Kambwala, and Alvaro Fernandez.
Thirteen players who if a big offer came in for them I think we should accept, but I don't feel any need to be sold immediately. Some are younger players who may yet step up, others talented players with limitations in someway.

Players who need to be sold/ let go: Maguire (not good enough, massive wages), Varane (huge wages, declining and injury prone), AWB (ultimately not good enough, too limited), Williams (not good enough), Amrabat (not worth paying the money to make his loan permanent), Casemiro (declining, massive wages), Donny (not good enough), McTominay (not good enough), Hannibal (won't be good enough), Martial (to free up the medical department), Sancho (wrong attitude, not good enough), Greenwood (off field issues), Shoretire (not going to be good enough), Antony (needs a fresh start, not good enough), Pellistri (not good enough) .

All these players are too limited or have the wrong attitude (or baggage) to stay and need to be moved on. Several we should be able to recover some reasonable fees for (Maguire, AWB, Casemiro, McTominay, Sancho, Greenwood and Antony), players who we should be getting 25-30m+ fees for. While players like Pellistri, Donny, Hannibal, Williams and Shoretire should collectively raise 40-50m between them. That would raise around 225m from those players.

That would leave us with a squad like this:

Onana, Bayindir, Heaton.

Dalot, Martinez, Kambwala, Lindelof, Evans, Shaw, Malacia, Alvaro Fernandez.

Mainoo, Bruno, Mount, Eriksen.

Rashford, Garnacho, Amad, Hojlund.

What becomes immediately obvious is the massive hole in the middle of the team. Four midfielders with three of them being attacking players best suited to playing as a No.10. With only the 18 year old Mainoo as a more defensively capable midfielder.

The thing is that when you look at the midfielders leaving (Casemiro, Amrabat, Donny, Hannibal, and McTominay) only Casemiro has shown to be be able to both play deeper in midfield and shown himself to be good enough. However, he is rapidly declining and on massive wages. keeping him this summer is a huge gamble as if he keeps declining as he has this season then his contributions will be limited for us and the chances of another club coming in to buy him also decreases. We clearly need at least TWO midfielders comfortable with playing deeper and do the defensive work.

The next issue is in attack, only one striker and a real lack of depth on the wings. We need to bring in a ST and a winger this summer.

That's four top signings needed already and we haven't addressed the defence. Only one RB in Dalot, who himself has picked up a few injuries during his time at the club. While the quality of central defenders behind Martinez is a significant drop off. We need a RB and a CB, possibly two CB's if Evans leaves. That's now 6 or 7 players. It could be argued with our injuries at LB with Shaw and Malacia that maybe we sign another LB. However, I think it makes more sense to keep Fernandez and give him a chance, and if push comes to shove maybe move Martinez there temporarily if we get two CB's in the summer. With the young Harry Amass likely to breakthrough in the next 18 months is seems silly spending to bring in a 3rd/ 4th LB.

Without speculating and putting any names out there then our squad could look like this after the summer:

Onana, Bayindir, Heaton.

Dalot, New RB, Martinez, New CB, Kambwala, Lindelof, Evans/ 2nd new CB, Shaw, Malacia, Alvaro Fernandez.

Mainoo, New CDM, New CM, Bruno, Mount, Eriksen.

Rashford, Garnacho, Amad, New winger, Hojlund, New ST.

That would give us a 25 man squad. Is it perfect? No. In my opinion even with these signings we will still need to find a long term solution at LB (maybe a signing, maybe Amass) . I'd look to keep all three LB's this summer, then probably look to sell Malacia and Fernandez in 2025, and sign a new LB. With Shaw leaving in 2026 with Amass replacing him. If we don't sign 2 CB's this summer then we will definitely need another one the following summer as well with Lindelof and Evans leaving. Bruno and Eriksen will need replacing by summer 2025, I'm also not convinced Rashford and Amad have long term futures at the club, so another wide player will be needed. Heaton will also need replacing, however hopefully that is with an academy keeper as third choice.

Meaning even with 6 singings this summer (RB, CB, CDM, CM, RW, ST), then in the summer of 2025 I think we will need a LB, CB, CAM, and winger.

I'd hope our squad looks a little like this by the start of the 2025/ 26 season:

Onana, Bayindir, academy keeper,

Dalot, new RB, Martinez, new CB, Kambwala, new CB, Shaw, new LB, Amass,

Mainoo, new CDM, new CM, Gore/ Fletcher, Mount, new CAM,

Garnacho, new RW, new LW, Lacey, Hojlund, new ST.

That's 10 new signings plus a keeper, Amass, Gore/ Fletcher and Lacey all promoted from the academy.

Ericsson needs to go this summer. He is far too lightweight and ineffective now.

17 Mar 2024 05:20:36
No way you can move on everyone you say we must in the summer. We also need to move in many of the second category. For that reason alone it will take another 2 seasons minimum before we could possibly challenge. And if we think we can fix this with a better manager, it will take longer. Huge squad overhall is required. Nee manager will only extend this process.

Btw - dalot should be in the first category, and he is neck and neck with garnacho for player of the season.

17 Mar 2024 12:53:47
Dodgy, I've mentioned 15 players who could and likely will leave the club this summer.

Amrabat is on loan and will not be signed on a permanent deal.

Martial, Varane have contracts expiring in June (As do Evans and Heaton, who aren't on my out list but obviously could leave) .

We then have players like Williams, Donny and Pellistri, all players who never play and whose agents are actively looking for a move for them.

Young players who haven't been getting chances like Hannibal and Shoretire will almost certainly be leaving. Hannibal has a buy option in his loan deal which highlights that the club are prepared to let him leave permanently. Alvaro Fernandez is another who again isn't on my sell list but is on loan with a buy option, suggesting the club are more than happy to cash in on him.
The club let Garner and Iqbal leave to free up space for Mainoo to come through. The suggestion is they are prepared to do the same with Alvaro Fernandez to make space for Harry Amass and with Hannibal for Jack Fletcher. Shoretire could well be let go to create space for someone like Shea Lacey. It seems the club is prepared to be far more ruthless with letting young players leave to create pathways for younger, more promising players.

That's 8 players, maybe as many as 11 (Evans, Heaton and Alvaro Fernandez) all set to leave without any of them other than Varane having any real impact on the first team. Other than Varane, Evans and Amrabat none of them have more than 180 minutes of first team football under their belts this season. While Evans and Amrabat only have the game time they do due to severe injuries this season.

You could in theory let all 11 players go and just sign one top quality CB to replace them and the squad would be no worse off.

We then have Sancho and Greenwood, two players who are almost certain to leave for reasons beyond football. Even if we can't sell them they won't play a part next season and will be out on loan again at the very least.

Maguire and McTominay were players the club was prepared to accept bids on last season (and did in Maguires case) . Both have have had better seasons this year and would likely be subject to bids this summer which I see the club accepting.

Now we are up to 12 (or 15) players all almost certain to leave this summer.

Leaving three players who I feel are also likely to leave if we can get bids for them.

AWB is probably the least required of the three to be sold and could be kept as a back up for Dalot who has taken the first choice RB spot and made it his own. He has one year left on his deal and it will eb the clubs last chance to recoup some of the 50m they spent on signing him. I'd imagine if someone offers 25m for him the club would snap their hands off.

Casemiro has shown he is struggling to stay fully fit and keep up with the game now. He is clearly declining and if a good offer comes in I'm sure he'll be sold. The fact that SJR has publicly stated that it was a poor deal just further underlines the likelihood of a sale this summer.

Finally Antony is the least likely to be sold as I can't see the club finding a buyer, but certainly if one can be found he will be sold this summer. He just hasn't worked out and it seems like the new structure at the club won't hold on to failing players in the same way as the last administration did.

The final three of AWB, Casemiro and Antony are probably less likely to be sold, but if acceptable bids come in I'm certain they will depart.

I'd expect to see something of a exodus from the club this summer, the new owners are in and they want to clear house, sweep the decks and make space to bring in the changes they want.

Also the club have a window of opportunity with a new owner where they can make an investment in their first year in charge which they can't in subsequent years. While bringing the wage bill down is a vital part of their plan moving forward. I wouldn't be surprised to see us spend 200-300m this summer, especially if we can recoup 150-175m through player sales and most importantly dramatically bring down the wage bill.

Massive game at OT on Sunday.
Both teams have been hampered really badly by injuries all season.
Both teams getting players back now so it will be interesting to see who is available.
It would be nice to have something to look forward to for another little while this season instead of just waiting for the summer and for the axe to fall on certain individuals at the club.

Reading that Maguire, AWB and Rasmus couold feature for the game against Liverpool.
Mount and Martinez could be available for the game against Brentford on the 30th of March.
Hopefully they can all stay fit and we can get a decent run going until the end of the season and try and get in to that top 4.

14 Mar 2024 16:19:13
We can try sim but it's unlikely we will win 8 of our last 10 even if we do that means as spurs and villa will need to lose 5 of their last 10.
The longest of long shots imo.

15 Mar 2024 07:52:23
Liverpool thumped SP Prague. They're getting in the mood for sure.

15 Mar 2024 12:45:09
Tumbleweed - You never know, stranger things have happened.
Could be still be 5 champions league spots available, Spurs normally bottle it every season.
It's a sad state of affairs when we are talking about Man United trying to get the 5th Champions League spot.
Oh how the tables have turned, Depressing!

15 Mar 2024 23:13:45
Fingers crossed we need to win the 8 or 9 and hope for the best.

13 Mar 2024 13:31:24
Good old Tyrone Mitchell of the MEN.

Banging the drum about why a call up for England for the friendlies might be too soon for Mainoo.
An article with plenty of fluff, including his passive eulogising of Jordan Henderson's experience.
Then he ends with reference to 2 18yo debutants for England as comparison - Sancho and Greenwood.
Wtf?

One player who's career has, rightly or wrongly, been stymied by serious criminal allegations - a player who, for that reason alone, will never play again for England.
As for the other player, perhaps only Mitchell himself ever thought that Sancho would ever get near to 1st choice for England - Saka, Foden, Grealish, Rashford and Sterling were and/ or are far better options on the flanks than any version of Sancho.

So the comparisons presented offer only the suggestion that perhaps Mainoo should seek to avoid situations where he could appear to be a wrongun and that simply getting selected for England isn't a reliable gauge with which to forecast one's career.

As for Henderson, what is there to learn? The friendlies against Belgium and Brazil offer great opportunities to learn about how well a young player can adapt to international football.
While Henderson is clearly Southgate's mate and will probably still make it to Euro 24, there's an argument for young players like Mainoo, Jacob Ramsey, Elliott, Jones, Garner and Scott.
Moreover, with perhaps only six midfield slots available, after Bellingham, Rice, maybe Trent, Maddison and Gallagher, there might only be the one seat left. It's a bit insulting to presume that the aforementioned 5 lack the competitive experience required at international level and need an old head with old legs to help them through. It's also ridiculous to think that Southgate will learn anything from interplay between Henderson and any of those 5.
Whether there's an argument for him at Euro 24, he shouldn't be anywhere near these two friendlies.

No Tyrone, you couldn't be more wrong, which is presumably why you work for the MEN.
Mainoo has it. Whatever the superlative, it's just there. This kid is a baller of the highest order and it's so f***ing arrogant to presume that the prospect of Mainoo opting for England over Ghana should be considered such a given.

There really should be an IQ test for journalists, because some really are properly dense little lead-heads.

Results are all that count now in hopefully our last 13 games.
When we win its good to look at the positives and there where a few today.
Garnacho played well and was a threat all game. Wasteful at times but won 2 pens and worked hard all game as always.
Onana was good and another game without any mad stuff.
Evans and mainoo were composed and I thought both were good today.
Tougher task next week so others are going to have to be better next week.

10 Mar 2024 03:10:33
We could do with a 25 year old Evans, what a player he is. He makes others around him better, an excellent trait in a player.

Garnacho is playing great. He is making things happen, he also won the freekick that Fernandes struck. Branthwait could have had a penalty called for handball from his cutback cross from the right, he also had the close shot that looked like it just clipped the bar. He is playing in a very poor team and he is carrying the attack while Hoyland is out. Not many 19 year old wingers with such pressure on their shoulders. I do like him more on the right, he looks to create for others a little more there.

Thankfully Onana has looked a little more secure, it was an odd moment when he let the ball go out for the corner, but those are the mistakes I was expecting from a ball playing keeper. His cross handling and saves have looked much better.

I've run out of superlatives for Mainoo, he's just got it. We need to nurture that kid, he is pretty special. Cassemiro had a poor game today, but Mainoo just holds it together like a seasoned pro.

10 Mar 2024 07:27:50
I agree not too many positives today in a poor performance
Onana good again
Evans good varane on the whole good
Garnacheo very dangerous
Very disjointed with no left footed player, Cb at left back, midfielder at 9, game probably panned out as you’d expect!
Cas terrible, for someone so experienced he dives in so much!
Onto the next and hopefully hoijland is ready!

10 Mar 2024 07:56:34
3 points and a clean sheet. Absolutely no other positives. So boring and we were 2nd best for pretty much the entire game. Poor yet again.

10 Mar 2024 20:50:50
Fizz,

Really? There are a few in the posts above, Onana was brilliant, Varane and Evans were good, Dalot played ok, Lindelof showed loads of energy and Garnacho was direct and won 2 penalties. A few positives for you there. Also Villa lost.

11 Mar 2024 08:59:36
I don't think it is going to be pretty for the remainder of the season but as you say at this moment it is points that count if we have any chance of champions league.
Hopefully we will see some players return after the international break and we can have a go over the final part of the season.
Evans is really showing what a quality player can do regardless of age, no matter who we bring in as CB (1 or 2) I would be happy to give him another year deal as a rotational piece and let him help the young players coming through.

09 Mar 2024 19:53:47
While the 3pts were needed, our team, style and speed of play is still very poor. We are still giving up lots of chances mainly to runners from midfield coming into the box. I appreciate we are missing 2 of the first choice back 4, l still believe we need a new CB to play with Martinez, we need a holding midfielder to replace a very slow Casemero and a right winger. Garnacho has been fantastic and has done everything that Rashford doesn't, he will play anywhere and give 100%, creates and scores and works hard. About 8-10 players to go and 4-5 to come in with internal youth promoted.

Hi Keefy

I am all set and really looking forward to going to the game. I am taking the train from London and my son who is at Uni in London also coming and we get there around 13.30 pm.

He has never been to OT so I am more excited about him having his first experience at OT. Let me know where we meet.

09 Mar 2024 10:25:45
Let’s meet at Piccadilly. There is a large electronic timetable. I’ll meet you there at 13.30. I’ll make sure my local train is there before that.

It only leaves 2 hours before kick off so maybe a quick beer near Piccadilly then off to game. The Trafford will be crazy busy but is an experience for someone who’s never been before if you’d prefer that.

10 Mar 2024 05:25:32
Hi Keafy

Perfect and will meet you there. our train actually gets in at pm 1302 so can meet earlier if that's better for you.

Hopefully Wembley next up :)

11 Mar 2024 06:19:42
Bad news Ahmad. Mum has taken a turn for the worse. So at this stage will not be going to the match. Will let you know if anything changes.

12 Mar 2024 07:40:07
Hope everything goes well and totally understand.

17 Mar 2024 10:36:58
Ahmad. Looks like I will be going after all. If you get this message before you leave we can meet as originally planned at electronic timetable.

17 Mar 2024 10:51:47
I’ll have a light grey Helly Hanson jacket on.

05 Mar 2024 18:44:42
Ok. 11 games left how many points you think we will pick up between now and end of season, if no changes made in interim and where we finish? Let's be realistic, I'm going for 6 wins 3 loses 2 drawers and probably 6th 5th outside chance but don't get champs league whatever.

Win at home to Everton - 3pts.
Draw at Brentford - 1pt.
Lose at Chelsea - nish.
Lose to Liverpool - nish.
Draw at Bournemouth - 1pt.
Win vs Newcastle - 3pts.
Win vs Burnley - 3pts.
Win at Palace - 3pts.
Lose to Arsenal - nish.
Draw at Brighton - 1pt.
Win vs Sheff Utd - 3pts.

18pts from 11 games to finish on 62.

I think 5th is gone, Spurs are getting the big names back and we're still, well. yeah.
6th if we're lucky.

06 Mar 2024 17:20:04
No idea 5 or 6 wins I'd say.
So if both Aston villa and spurs lose 8 or 9 of their last 11 games we might finish 4th.
