For the last few years I've been an admirer of Hamsik. Great passer and scores from midfield. With a ball winning mid beside him, he could be a great threat. I realize that Napoli is in no need to sell after receiving that ridiculous sum for Cavanni, especially one of their prized assets. And Hamsik may want to work with Benitez. But I just don't see Napoli winning trophies over Juve and Milan - mmmaaayyybbbeee Inter. With the Cesc looking less likely to move (never looked like a deal would be done IMO) and with Thiago and Strootman out of the picture, might be worth a punt at 20-25mil.
Couple problems. Michu and Shaw just resigned with their clubs. Nani is in his last year of contract and if Ando has another season like the last few, his value will keep on dropping. And we would still be light in quality at CM.
Vidal, Bender, Gundogan, Veratti, Maher, probably Marchisio are not available to us. A number of other players that you mention have great potential but aren't good enough yet to make a difference maker in the first team. The fact is the available options at CM are dwindling. That is not to say that we won't pick someone up but IMO we wasted valuable time (and looked bad doing it) with Fab and screwed up by not being more serious about Thiago and Strootman. Hopefully we can still at least get enough quality depth in the midfield during this window.

I'd still love to see Hamsik come in with a Gustavo/Bender/Vidal. I can't see BVB selling Gundogen but then again with Napoli's new riches, I can't see them selling Hamsik either.
I was a fan of Afellay at PSV but it seems that ever since he left there, he hasn't outshined anyone else. Maybe because the leagues are different, maybe because he has been racked with injuries, or maybe he didn't fit into the line up. I'm afraid with the physicality of the english game he might suffer more nagging injuries but if he's available for cheap he may be useful for rotation on the wings if one of Nani/Young/Valencia is sold.
