Hi Eds,

We were reportedly interested in Ilkay Gundogan of Dortmund before he got injured, does any interest remain and isn't he a better alternative to Vidal/Strootman, what's your view?

Japs!

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any interest in him from MU.}

1.) I think Gundogan is a monumentally big risk. He hasn't played for over a season and his knee has taken so long to heal. I'd have major concerns. I honestly think that the most cost effective move would be Khedira and it wouldn't surprise me at all to see us be front runners for him in January.

2.) It's his back, not his knee.

3.) I agree. but until his contract extension last year all of us really wanted him and if he's back up to speed and performing like we know he can, I'd love to see us make a move for him in the summer.

Hi Ed001,
How do you rate Maguire vis-a-vis players like Umtiti, Alderweireld and Stones.
And what's your take on Nathan Ake?

Japs!

{Ed001's Note - Alderweireld is a class above any of those others, Stones is the worst. Umtiti has a few issues like being rash and not good on the ball, but he is very good physically. Maguire is just an average defender with a tendency to make runs forward that lose the ball.

As for Ake, the lad himself says he wants to play in midfield and he plays like a midfielder thrown in at the back. His positional sense is utterly abysmal but he has excellent recovery pace to, sometimes, rescue the situation. Working under Eddie Howe, who couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery defensively, is not helping him improve though.}

1.) 03 Jul 2019 19:49:53
Whilst you are giving your valued opinion Ed01,
what are your thoughts on Lindelof?

{Ed001's Note - much improved and starting to look like the defender United thought they were buying. Good on the ball with a decent reading of the game, he has been hampered badly by playing the opposite side from his preference and by constant chopping and changing of partners. Despite that he has improved massively and looks a good Premier League defender.}

2.) 03 Jul 2019 20:22:08
Thanks Ed01

I was still not convinced but you saying he’s playing on the wrong side does make a difference.

{Ed001's Note - that is the only thing about Maguire that makes sense, he likes to play on the left, so allows Lindelöf to move back to the right where he is comfortable.}

3.) 03 Jul 2019 20:46:31
That does make sense. Think we also need some legs in front of any back 4 we get to protect them a bit more than Matic did last year.

Still a long way to go in the window so hopefully that happens along with a CB and we can start thinking about at least competing with the 2 top.

Would you play McTom instead of Matic?

4.) 03 Jul 2019 23:14:52
Agree editor 001 Toby (if fit) is in my opinion the best CB in the league followed closely by VVD. I thought United would have pushed for Toby as a short term solution but guess change in gaffer and lack of CL put an end to that.

I am not fully against Maguire but his price is hefty for what he is - as you say average. His main weakness for me is on the turn and I am not sure VL has the pace to mop up after him if he is caught out.

Hi Ed002,

Can we have a podcast on Manchester United anytime soon?

Japs!

{Ed004's Note - There was a detailed list given a few weeks ago}

1.) 23 Jun 2019 13:58:27
Hi Ed004,

Ed002 mentioned last week that he'd be doing a podcast after his travels. This was more like a reminder and request for the same.

{Ed002's Note - I will get to it when I can but this week already looks full.}

2.) 23 Jun 2019 18:06:16
Sure, Thanks Ed002.

Will look forward keenly and patiently!

Hi Guys,

I'm a long time lurker, rare poster. Been here since almost 10 years.

We constantly hear the term "United Quality" or rather, "Not United Quality". So, I thought I'd ask the forum what we mean by United Quality?

My only point being that it's a squad game and everyone will obviously never be the same quality and you need the Park's, O'Shea's and Fletcher's as much as the Cristiano's, Giggs' and Cantona's. So should there be a minimum threshold or a role specific measure of "United Quality"

Japs!

Japs
Good post, it's a team game.

2.) 21 Apr 2019 08:47:32
Fair point Japs, it's just a throwaway phrase really, isn't it. There is no real way of measuring 'quality', it's it's very subjective and down to personal opinion. And let's face it, whatever 'United quality' is, it seems to have gone downhill in recent seasons.

3.) 21 Apr 2019 09:31:58
It’s a good question, for me it’s less about being United quality but being a United player. Fellaini for all his skills and attributes was not a United player. I can’t articulate why I feel that way but he just wasn’t the right fit for our club. Lovely bloke, gave his all, but not right for us. Sometimes it’s abIlity, sometimes style, sometimes attitude. I guess we all have a slightly different view of what it means.

4.) 21 Apr 2019 09:41:46
I think Ole described it best in his recent interview and Fergie used a few of these phrases often, take ownership, have hunger and desire to win, play without fear, are they for and going to run themselves into the ground for the club and teammates, it’s more about a personality type as much as it is a skillset to be united quality imo.

5.) 21 Apr 2019 10:00:18
Good post Japs,

I think its a team game but you also need top class players as its got a lot more money and owners from all around the world.

City for e.g have 2 top class players for most of their players.

Liverpool are doing really well but not all their players are top class apart from their first team but its their attitude towards winning and Klopp being a top manager to get the best out of them and he has been backed by their owners.

I think having the right attitude is just as as important as being a top player. If you don't have the right attitude you will turn into a Pigba/ Martial type of player no matter how much talent you have.

6.) 21 Apr 2019 10:29:16
Just read the quotes from McTominay yesterday. Its the attitude, the desire coupled with talent.

Fellaini is a great example of the contrast. Technically no he wasn't United quality. But attitude wise he was more of a United player than some still here.

7.) 21 Apr 2019 11:42:03
For me its about how you apply yourself in training and matches.
Not everyone is a messi a Ronaldo or even a scholes or rio.
But good examples are neville fletch o shea. They tried to be as good as they could be. No over inflated ego. They made the most of their opportunity and worked hard to maintain it.
That for me is united quality.
Making the most of what you have. Bringing that to the team and doing it or trying to do it every week .
Its not about the flicks or tricks or the odd moment its about applying yourself the united way.

8.) 21 Apr 2019 15:54:10
Well if you want to an example of what is not the United way, just look at that utter shambles today. Not one player played with any desire or passion. I can’t quite believe what I just witnessed to be quite honest.

Hi Guys,

I'm travelling to the UK next month and very excited since I'll be there during the City game on 27th and the Swansea game on 30th. Please let me know the best way to get tickets for the City-United game since they're unavailable on the Man City Website. And should I buy the VIP Package for the game at OT and do you recommend the stadium tour, there's 5 types on the website, which one to opt for and why?
Views from the regulars on the forum would be highly appreciated and I'd love to meet some of you in person at the game too, if you're going for the Swansea game. :)
Thanks!

Japs!

1.) 28 Mar 2017 18:19:31
If you can afford the VIP its well worth it. You get to meet a club legend, meal etc. I don't think the seats are in the best part of the ground atmosphere wise.

If your doing the tour make sure its not near a natch day. They close off the dressing rooms etc. So best to do it when no game on.

2.) 29 Mar 2017 12:30:54
Hi James,

Is there a way to get regular match day tickets, they're unavailable on the website and only VIP packages are available.

Also, how can I get tickets for the City-United match?
Cheers,
Japjit.

But Ed002, how does this work with us extending Lee Grant’s contract and then signing Heaton as 3rd choice GK. Seems odd to carry 4 GK’s in the squad.

Japs!

{Ed002's Note - Heaton is a replacement for Romero and Lee Grant will work with the youngsters whilst completing coaching qualifications.}

I think that he'll play with 2 midfielders sitting deeper and 1 further forward instead of playing 1 deeper and 2 ahead of him, given the purchases and the fact that the wingers will need protection defensively, given the pace of the league.

I'm not so much for replacing evra for what he brings to the dressing room in terms of the "United Spirit" and the leadership and experience of so many years, being a battle hardened united player that he is.

@Shappy - While I appreciate the point that you’re making but AC Milan never played that way, they either played a flat four with Kaka coming in off the left side and Seedorf from the right or a diamond with Pirlo sitting, Gattuso and Seedorf in the middle and Kaka as the 10.

Hence, I’m not sure if that system works with 8 being the work horse and having no destroyer type player, especially since these days teams are very big on counter pressing.

@Raghav - There's a few of them, some cheaper than the others. I sat very close to the stretford end so it was quite an experience!

@CantonasSeagull - I went for the Swansea game which we drew, Rooney scored a pen, and much to my disappointment Zlatan was injured and out of that game, besides the draw.
