By definition there are always 11 world class players. Ie they would be selected for a world team.

Who would they play against? So your saying it only apply's to 1 person in each position? So Neuer is world class but De Gea isn't, or vice versa? Can't stand people's interpretations of what should be world class, elite, top drawer, Bobby dazzler etc. They are just terms.

Listened to a podcast recently, Freddie savage and the ping pong guy ( or something like that) and this topic was covered. Each gave their own definition and examples from their sport. The examples were the usual legends but the definitions from each had their own criteria and varied greatly between the hosts. However, each was rigjt and none were wrong.

The inability to agree on a specific set of criteria led to the debate almost spiralling out of control as each tried to insist that theirs was the right definition, and eventually led to them all agreeing that a grey area exists where a player can be world class but not legendary.

The likes of Darren fletcher cross my mind as an example, spent the majority of his career at one of the most successful club sides, won countless trophies, was the catalyst for success in individual games, and played consistently on the world stage. We shoukd all agree he is not a workd legend, but to try and counter claim his legitimacy to be called world class is a lot more difficult than it wiukd first seem.

In response to op I will say you are right but very very wrong at the same time.

I love Darren Fletcher. I am very grateful for everything that he has done for the club. For about 8 months he was the best midfielder Manchester United had - I even genuinely believe (delusionally, perhaps) that had he not been suspended for the 2009 Champions' League final, we might have won it. But he has never been, by any sane person's measure, "world class". In fact, I would go so far as to make the opposite argument - that he is much closer to being a United legend than he ever was to being "world class".

Thank you Ryan, you twisted so many people's blood and we loved every moment of it. Good luck I hope you land a managerial position with the potential to develop youth, attack and wingplay in the way the master taught you. If you become half the manager that you were a player, success will surely come your way.

rumour has it that he's the new manager of the salford branch of relate :)

Surely the definition of world class Is that they would be picked for the world team at any one time in their position. In days gone by they used to play games as rest of the world before players got way too many games for club and country. Surely Schmeichel would of made that grade and Beckham too maybe even ferdinand

Agree TML. For me, "World class" implies that a player would get into the best team in the world if it were assembled: essentially the best players in that position in the world.

Ronaldo, yes, maybe Scholes and Giggs in their prime - but, while Big Eric was the catalyst for success, he wasn't World Class. Same for Rooney: has he ever been the best striker in the world? Maybe Van Nistelroy was.

{Ed002's Note - If you want folks to have their input in respect of "world class" teams I suggest a new thread and I will put it on the teams page.}

Wash your mouth out Wallace, I have been watching Untied since '78 and Cantona is as good as anyone I have seen. He was only with us briefly but domestically he was simply outstanding. I don't just mean the impact he had on younger players but his contribution on the pitch. He regularly took my breath away

{Ed025's Note - he was world class AJH..

3.) 22 Sep 2015 20:06:34
AJH ,

I loved watching Cantona and he had a big impact on our club but you've basically just said why he wasn't world class. He was outstanding domestically but he didn't do it in Europe

4.) 22 Sep 2015 20:09:45
i think cantona was a worldclass entertainer
not sure he was a workdclass footballer

5.) 22 Sep 2015 20:23:32
AJH, no one comes close in terms of influence on the team/catalyst for success, but I don't recall any of the elite tier teams ever wanting him, maybe Inter Milan in 1995.

This might've been because of his disciplinary record but even on the international stage for France he didn't set the world alight.

So, yes, maybe he was world class - but only when playing in England. To be truly world class, you need to be able to play anywhere, regardless of provocations or temperament.

Perhaps, because of his relationship with Fergie, he was world class for United.

But if he couldn't do it consistently for other managers, then he falls short.

6.) 22 Sep 2015 21:07:06
The only person I have seen in my lifetime who has been so influential for a club side apart from Cantona was Maradona when he went to Napoli. Maybe Messi , but he is surrounded by top class players week in week out.
Cantona was the catalyst for 25 years of domination. People talk of the "missing piece of the jigsaw" , well that was Cantona in a nutshell.
Eric Cantona? Now there is a proper United legend.

7.) 22 Sep 2015 22:42:01
If we are talking world class it would be a crime not to mention Ronaldinho I just love that guy, I can remember that goal against England and thinking flukey sod, how wrong was I

Shappy

We had the same problem after Sir Matt, and eventually got our winner, SAF, but even he was not an instant success. Now we all know the money has changed football forever and SAF would not have been given that time if he had been appointed this year. Instant is the new way because of the money. Jose has 2 years to win the league I suspect, but could hang on longer if he keeps getting top 4. I hope he proves everyone wrong and stays for years and years and builds the third dynasty, integrating stars and mourinho's minors! To me that is the interesting thing, SAF followed Busby's style and culture, now will the Special one? If he does he will be forever special.

Yes, Roy Keane would be appalled at the idea, and Wayne certainly wouldn’t do that. It is a sign of competitiveness and if Jose gets that back to the side, I’d put up with it.

Actually the people who turn on those fans from outside of Manchester miss the fundamental success of the club is the whole point. United were one of the first clubs to internationalise and widen the brand - something all the chelskis, bitters etc are now trying to catch up with. So the very success of United brings the claim, but it totally misses the point of the forward nature of the club from many years ago

What an appalling performance. If Moyes needs to spend 150 million (and it seems that is the least it will nedd, who on earth would trust him with it after that clueless, tactically inept and gutless performance?). Rooney must be wondering what on earth has he let himself in for and Mata's tears may well be the cause of the recent flooding
