That is my worry RJ. I have a good feeling Pereira will get a run of games at the start of the season, perform well and then as soon as we have Jose’s ‘reliables’ back then he’ll be dropped.

Having said that, there’s also the possibility of José sticking to a winning formula, as we know he likes to do. So if we start the season well with Pereira, Fred and Herrera in midfield, José may want to stick with them to keep the momentum, though somehow. i think he’s more likely to bring them back in asap.

Either way, as you say jred. it shaping up to be an interesting start to the season.

It's been hard to make any kind of valued assessment on pre season with so many important players missing but I think we can take a few positives away from what we've seen so far.

The undoubted success of pre season has been Sanchez. He looks fit, fresh and perhaps more importantly hungry. Just as I thought Mata was surplus to requirements he appears to have forged an almost telepathic relationship with Sanchez and they've linked up brilliantly together. I've also been impressed with Pereira. He's been very good in possession and always looks forward. I hope he stays and fights for his place he could be a very useful addition to the squad.

Anyway all this got me thinking to how we could implement this next season. I don't think it's any coincidence that Sanchez has performed better higher up the pitch. Sometimes when he plays wide left he drops far too deep in search of the ball. In deeper positions he occupies Pogba's space and often finds himself with only one forward option in Lukaku. He has a tendency to surrender possession by trying to dribble his way out of dangerous, congested areas or plays the ball sideways or backwards as he has no other options.

I don't think Jose will persist with three at the back so surely there is merit in adopting a 4-4-2 diamond formation. A midfield diamond of Matic, Pogba, Fred with Mata or Lingard at 10 and Sanchez partnering Lukaku up front. Ok it might lack width but we don't really play with width anyway. It stops Sanchez from dropping too deep and he can still pull into wide left positions, where he can cut inside and shoot or deliver crosses for Lukaku.

This formation may also benefit Pogba. He has defensive cover in Matic, a No 10 to link with and Sanchez making runs in behind opening up space. Fred will bring an energy and intensity to our midfield. He is also very good in possession and mobile. He'll be able to quickly interchange positions with the likes of Sanchez, Mata or Lingard helping us to be more fluid, dynamic and retain possession in more dangerous areas.

I accept in an ideal world that better options at full back would help provide this formation with more attacking width but Young and Valencia are solid options without being spectacular.

In terms of signings we wouldn't need a RW with possibly a new CB our only real requirement. Whilst I think our existing CB's are adequate all are injury prone and none have really cemented their place as first choice. I think Alderweireld would be a great addition but I wouldn't hold my breath. Having said that if we could move on Darmian, Rojo and maybe even Smalling in the next week or so that might just release the funds to give Spurs what they want. 29 is still relatively sprightly for a CB and if we want the best then we'll have to pay. Surely quality trumps quantity and that would still leave us with Bailly, Lindelof, Jones and Tuanzebee who I think can be a superstar.

2.) 02 Aug 2018 15:08:37
I think in an ideal world we'd all envisage Matic being rested in the 10-12 league games at Old Trafford where teams come with the game of plan of scraping a draw or nicking a goal. This would be perfect for Pereira to further develop in to the deep lying playmaker role.

Sadly only really see Jose doing this if we improve our defence before the deadline.

There is a reputable London and chiefly spurs based journo now saying Toby is likely to leave spurs. So here's hoping.

3.) 02 Aug 2018 15:44:40
Totally agree Nathaniel I'd like to see Pereira given that role whilst Matic is out injured. I certainly don't see any problem with him playing that position especially like you've said against teams that will sit back and concede possession.

I think it was Shappy who posted a few days ago and commented that he'd like to see Pereira learn from Carrick and improve defensively by improving his anticipation and reading of the game. Making interceptions then intelligently moving the ball forward making incisive passes.

You don't have to be overly physical or a good tackler to be a good defensive player. Reading the game, spotting danger, taking up the right positions and cutting out passes can be just as effective. Carrick was brilliant at this. This is hopefully an area that Pereira can improve to supplement his technical ability on the ball.

4.) 02 Aug 2018 15:45:58
If Smalling lraves then Toby will come.

Away from all the doom and gloom for a second, and all the transfer rumours that seem to change more frequently than time itself.

Is anyone else excited by the way Andreas Pereira has been playing in pre season? I know I’ve posted on here before about how much I’d like him to succeed and, although pre season is rarely anything to go by, he seems fit, hungry and has really impressed me in the number 6 role he’s been asked to play in.

I think the biggest thing for me has been his ability to unlock defences which we have struggled to do at times, and potentially more importantly, the relationship and understanding he’s built with Sanchez over the past couple of weeks.

Is anyone else as excited as me about these two in particular for the upcoming season? I know everyone loves a shiny new signing, but I love seeing Academy players breaking through even more, and with Pereira and Sanchez, we could potentially have the best of both worlds already in the squad, as I believe we will see a completely different Sanchez to the one we saw in January.

Anyway, just wanted peoples opinions on the matter, and wanted to bring a bit of (potential) positivity. Thanks to the Ed’s as always for their priceless insight and information.

I'd love to see Pereira get a run of games in the middle of midfield but I'm not convinced it will happen. Once Pogba, Matic and Fellaini return he will be behind them in the pecking order and Mourinho seems far more likely to play them due to his love of experience. Add Herrera, Fred and possibly McTominay in there is as well.

He does give us a type of midfielder who we don't have though and I think he could be a great asset in games where we need to keep possession.

Sanchez looks a different player after a summer off. He's barely had a holiday for something like 6 or 7 years. My guess is that this season he will be our player of the year.

One other thing for positivity is the 352 we've been playing. I still think 433/ 4231 will be our main system but in games where a team will sit back, being able to get 2 up front is important. Sanchez and Lukaku as a front 2 could be fantastic.

2.) 02 Aug 2018 07:30:05
I think periera is a good player and will be used as a squad player. Time will tell how he'll handle not being played every week. But i like the guy and i would rather see him play as he's technically gifted, rather than Mctominay, who is big and strong and nothing else. No disrespect to Mctominay.
I think Sanchez is going to be the key player for us this year. If Mourinho would allow us to play more freely, then Pogba, sanchez and Lukaku will be an awesome combination up front.

3.) 02 Aug 2018 08:59:41
He is a talented lad it would be great if he could get a run of games .
It's building up to be a really interesting start to the season.

4.) 02 Aug 2018 10:53:05
With Matic currently injured and others returning from world cup duty I think we will see a 352 with midfield 3 of Pereira, Fred and Harera for the Leicester game.
They have done enough and other players need to do a pre season for me. Slowly eek in Pogba as August moves on.

Been reading a lot of the posts recently about what we need, specifically in the midfield area. A lot of people are crying out for another cm to be brought in, as well as giving some of our own young blood a chance. Well, maybe we can kill two birds with one stone. ish.

Andreas Pereira. I’ve spoken about him before on here as he’s someone I really like the look of. I haven’t seen enough of Fred to know if they have similar playing styles, and I know he’s not really ‘young blood’ anymore, but I think he deserves a chance in cm to see if he can be that player to dictate the pace of the game.

He can beat a man, can see a pass and has a good delivery. What do people think about not signing another cm and giving him the chance to step up?

RW I think we can all agree we need a good signing here. Unfortunately, it’s tough to know who that is;

Bale? Too injury prone.
Mbappe? Most likely unattainable.
Rebic? Not good enough for me.

Anyway, the list continues. Someone I wouldn’t mind us looking at is Malcom. I know he’s heading for Italy as per Ed’s sharkopod but would be an interesting signing.

A few other names that could do a job are; Kingsley Coman, Christian Pulisic (know it wouldn’t happen but could test the waters), Douglas Costa, hell I’d even take Willian at this rate. There is a few more, one of which I’m struggling to remember his name and can’t remember what team he plays for (extremely helpful, I know) but he’s a young, quick RW who’s name has often been mentioned on this site.

Of course I’d love to see Gomes and Chong get opportunities throughout the season but it would be asking a lot for them to come straight into the first team right away, so having someone they can learn from for a few years could be perfect.

There’s no real point to my post really but just wanted to gauge peoples opinion on those options in those two areas. would people be happy with that?

UnitedInRed

{Ed004's Note - My.two picks would be either Bale or Pusilic. Failing that I'd hope we tried Sanchez on that side}

1.) 20 Jul 2018 03:55:33
Pereira is not good enough for me. He doesn't really dictate the game enough and he offers very little defensively. A center mid that can dictate the game needs to have a big personality on the pitch, by always demanding the ball, and making things easier for everyone else. Pereira hasn't shown that from what I have seen.

On the RW, I'mwith Ed004. We need a big difference maker like Bale or Perisic, or else we should just go with what we have.

2.) 20 Jul 2018 08:29:56
If I had to pick of what’s most likely available right now, it would be Bale at the moment as he seems the more attainable. But if I had to choose my dream signing, it would most likely be Mbappe. Pulisic looks a very good players and wouldn’t be upset if we signed him at all, but Mbappe Just looks special to me.

That’s a good point zidaniel. While he seems to have the skill and passing range, he does seem to lack some of that arrogance we often see in other cm’s. But does that come from game time? Or is he just more suited to somewhere like La Liga where he has more time in the ball?

24 May 2018 08:27:11
All this talk of Willian for our RW has me a little concerned. He’s probably better than what we currently have, but he strikes me as a slightly better version than Nani. can be a world beater or can be non-existent. Please correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t profess to have watched him all that much but that’s the impression I get.

I’d much rather see Andreas Pereira given a string of game on the right hand side. He was playing there for Valencia and by all accounts did a decent job from what I heard, and has a much better delivery, both in open play and dead ball situations, than most of our current players. What do you guys think? He strikes me as a technically gifted player with an eye for a pass (Mata and Coutinho come to mind) and I think he’s been patient and deserves his chance to tie down a regular spot.

UnitedInRed

1.) 24 May 2018 08:46:20
I agree mate I have really high hopes for pereira and think he could be the sort of coutinho player for us if given the opportunity and a run of games. He has ability from deadball situations which we have been lacking for so many years. I fear we won’t see his ability at united though.

2.) 24 May 2018 09:23:03
It's important that our signings are better or at least equivalent to our main rivals now as we have to catch up so much.

So is Willian as good as Sterling or Salah - resounding no for me.

3.) 24 May 2018 09:35:47
If we signed salah last summer would he have got 40+ goals?

Most likely would have struggled having to track his full back all the time instead of attacking spaces in the opponents defence like he has been in klopps system.

4.) 24 May 2018 10:32:06
Sterling is still dopey infront of goal . He needs 5 chances per game to maybe score one.

Salah does a lot of tracking at Liverpool he is just a special player.

5.) 24 May 2018 10:59:18
we tried the "we don't need wingers" we have rashford and martial, give them a chance,

look where that got us inconstant performances and lack of width,

not saying there not good just there not up to the level to play every game but hopefully they can become them type of players

as you say beast we need to be signing better than we have now and willan ticks that box.

6.) 24 May 2018 11:18:46
Salah and sterling are both great examples of players playing to there potential .
What's the point of buying players if you can't get the ones you have playing well.

7.) 24 May 2018 11:37:22
Sterling scores 23 goals in a season. Shot conversion rate increases by 10%.

Still dopey in front of goal.

8.) 24 May 2018 14:01:44
when given time in front of goal he isn't great, but when playing on instinct this season he has been.

Pep has really got him playing the best football of his life and I hope he translates it to the England team this summer then once we're out immediately forgets how to play.

9.) 24 May 2018 14:10:10
you should watch the chances he misses you will know what i mean.

10.) 24 May 2018 14:12:08
23 goals for. A wide position is a good return.

11.) 24 May 2018 17:50:14
Bolger. I said last year that we needed width and i stated that neither martial nor Rashford are wingers. But i was told that united don't need wingers.
I actually think we need a right and left winger. We are badly in need of width.

12.) 24 May 2018 20:36:37
My wife was asking for more width too, mate. 😒.

03 Mar 2018 22:40:30
With all this talk of us needing to sign a midfielder to compliment Pogba and Matic, I was just wondering whether Andrea Pereira might be able to do a job there? Admittedly I haven’t seen him play that much since his loan to valencia (which has largely been spent out wide I believe? ) for those that have seen him play - would he suit that role or is he too forward thinking? Certainly strikes me as a player that can control a game, given a run of games and some confidence.

UnitedInRed

1.) 03 Mar 2018 22:55:40
I’ve always thought he was wrong to go on loan as he would have played a lot this season with the problems we have in midfield. Something he does have is quality from dead balls and crossing and that would have helped go a long way this season, especially for Lukaku. I think he could play that midfield role well as I don’t think he quite has the pace to play on the wing and would be wasted out there. I remember in pre season he was quite tenacious in the tackle. I look forward to him coming back as I think he has a lot to offer next year.

2.) 04 Mar 2018 06:27:45
I agree. I’ve always liked the look of him and it was a shame to see him go on loan, though I understand why he did it and it could work out for the best in the long run. If I remember rightly Jose didn’t want him to leave either so hopefully he’s in his plans for next year. I’d love to see him push for a starting spot next year, the boy is certainly talented and has something a little different from our other options in midfield.

3.) 04 Mar 2018 09:50:52
I would buy asensio for the role.

4.) 04 Mar 2018 14:23:30
Asensio would be a great signing - every time I see him play he excites me. Not sure Real would listen to offers though surely?

Happy with that signing as long as it’s not instead of us going for SMS. He’s the one I’d be really disappointed to miss out on. Are they similar players? Don’t know much about Fred to be honest.

Thanks for your replies. It would be a shame that, if both are indeed attainable in the summer, we didn’t go for either of them.

It seems that recently we no longer fight for players. I know the market has become ridiculous with the amounts being spent on players, but I remember when we used to be he team stealing players from other teams noses, not the other way around. Obviously we don’t have much to go on other than the Eds’ expert knowledge and paper talk, but as soon as another club becomes interested in a player we want, then we lose out.

Time will tell I guess. Been hearing a lot about Jean Michael Seri being available and he looks a great player. Would anyone take a January window of him and Lucas Moura and go for a Griezmann or Dybala in the summer?
