Related to a post further down just wondered why majority of united fans think Herrera is a class player. have seen very little of any genuine world class ability. would ge get in any of the top teams? I think definitely not.

Its because he's a Man Utd player, he is good and could be better if used correctly BUT, if he played for Liverpool/ Chelsea/ Man City/ Arsenal etc etc then people here wouldn't rate him as highly.

I'm a fan of his though beginning to think the same as yourself. I really am undecided about what he really gives to the team. Initially I think I liked him simply for making himself available for a pass and when receiving one moving the ball on quickly usually 1st or 2nd touch but watching him he does this in areas where it doesn't hurt the opposition. Maybe its down to the fact he was the 1st midfield signing in a few years so it got fans excited, also the fact he seems to love playing for united and is a nice fella apparently. Or maybe he needs a run of games to find better form. Unsure united fan.

Herrera played well last year, but his form has dipped a bit this season.

I think he has a big future at the club personally.

I don't get the hype. Decent all round but not a starter in a good side - he is loved because he isn't Fellaini I think.

Just don't see it in think he is average tbh.

In a different system he would shine. His talents lie in quickly transitioning the ball from midfield to attack, and opening up space for attacking players. It's no surprise that his best performances came last season when we played 4-3-3 with one holding mid and no number 10. The problem for Herrera (and Schneiderlin to a lesser extent) is that our midfield is incredibly segmented and positionally rigid. So if Herrera is playing in one of the sitting roles he has to make sure that he is defending the space on his side of the pitch, and if he is number 10 he needs to make sure that he is close enough to offer support to the striker. Either way, his ability to implement his natural game of moving the ball quickly from midfield to attack is severely limited because there simply isn't enough movement ahead of him.

Similar players like Thiago have excelled under more progressive managers, and it's no surprise that fast passing sides like Barcelona and Juve are contemplating making a move for him. Unfortunately for us, the lad will never shine in a van Gaal side.

I agree Danny he is not being used in a way that he can play to his strengths IMO, the same can be said of Mata and to a lesser degree martial.
I keep going back to us not having over lapping/ attacking full backs creating overloads out wide which lessons the opportunities for our midfielders to make more forward and incisive passes, the lack of players running from deep positions to unsettle the 2 banks of 4 in front of us is killing the likes of Herrera and Mata IMO.

He's anderrated.

This site is about opinions. Some of you think Smalling is the Baresi. Some of you don't rate Herrera. That's football folks there's no right or wrong answer. Just opinion.

10.) 19 Jan 2016 22:27:20
When he plays a game here and there often with different midfield partners it's difficult for him to conjur up any form or understanding. But when he has played consistently he's really impressed me. He is always looking for that killer pass, positive forward movement which we often lack, and why LVG doesn't like him. When we do play well he's often instrumental in it. He suits a side playing quick one or two touch flowing football, something we certainly do not. He's one of my favourite players and I'll be gutted if we let him leave.

I made a point about 12 months ago on here that I didn't think Herrera was as good as people make out and got massively abused, took it on the chin obviously it was just my opinion.

I am still of the same opinion, but he is the one player we have who will turn midfield into attack quickly so he should play every game in my opinion. I think there are better players out there that do his job but he is decent, nothing more.

I've noticed he is actually a much better player when he isn't playing, if he misses a few games everyone goes mad that he isn't playing, then when he does he rarely plays like the player people seen to think he is.

What I will say is he seems like a top guy and clearly loves playing for the club, like it's an honour to him, anyone who plays like that will always have my support when they are on the pitch. I don't think he is far away from being brilliant, just not sure that he has been or ever will be.

I love Herrera, he plays with a great attitude. Willing to work on both sides of the ball, vocal, and passionate about the team. By vocal I mean that he is always switched on, concentrated, and aware of defensive responsibilities of the team defending as a group. His style also helps to pick up the tempo, and if we play on the front foot more, we will see Herrera shine, I believe. A guy with the character of Ander Herrera is what we need at Manchester United, unlike a lot of the young, spoiled prima donnas that we see these days.

Halesini

I agree
Imo smalling has improved but he's still an average cb. I'll probably get hate for saying this but it's true. We've been playing with 2 holding midfielders and at times it seemed like 6 at the back. The amount of cover he gets makes him look better than he actually is. Look at games where we push forward. The defence is a shambles. It's no surprise lvg plays defensive football. If we go on a attack our defence can't cope with any sort of counter eg norwich.

Herrera is a rich man's Spanish Cleverley.

In fairness has he had a good game since joining? Not being a bitter gunner we are truly shocking at the moment so can't slag off other teams.

@mort are you actually trying to say pogba has been close to kdb standards this season? Stats can be misleading, take of the red glasses and realise at this moment kdb is by far the superior player.
