Herrera was offered a new contract, but wanted a substantial wage increase and more game time. The club couldn’t meet his demands.

Mata is still in negotiations, but no agreement has been reached.

The club shouldn’t be allowing situations where players they want to keep are entering the last months of their contracts, as this gives them a much stronger hand in negotiations. In addition, Sanchez’s wages have created a situation in which first team players can justifiably make a case for big wage increases.

“Let Herrera leave”. Were we meant to offer a better than average player £250k a week? We did the exact same thing with him that we are doing with Mata, offered him a contract we felt was fair, he rejected it despite apparently loving the club, we will see if mata does the same.

GDS2, that is only half the story with herrera, other reports suggest that we initially offered him a pay cut and that combined with the fact that his 1 year option was confirmed via post, you can see why he felt badly treated.

If we really wanted herrera to stay, seems an odd way to go about it and now we have another position to fill that would have been completely unnecessary.

He rejected it because he could get more money elsewhere GDS, and because a player not good enough for the starting 11 was give £350,000 a week. Players are entitled to look for the highest wage they can get and, surprisingly, are aware of what their teammates are earning.

Yes the one year option thing has been widely reported.

The club had the perfect oppurtunity to renew his contract after he won the player of the year in mourinhos first season (2016/ 17).
