I never thought I would find myself saying it but does anyone else feel that we should not be falling over ourselves to keep DDG. I think his head is elsewhere and just perhaps it would be better all round if he went where his head is. Certainly form well back into last season has done nothing to justify a hike in earnings nor the immunity from a pay cut clause if we miss out on CL this season.
Romero when playing has never let us down and we have adequate back up IMO.

Still has plenty of credit in the bank, sooner his contract is signed the better.

Its not like we are a squad full of quality.

I had worries last season and felt his head was turned. But I do think he’s still world class and just going through a slump in form. He needs to sign on. If he doesn’t then I’d drop him of Romero.

Ddg has been blowing hot and cold for a while.
But i still have confidence in him i think if i was manager is take him out of the firing line and leave him out for a couple of games.
Id imagine he is still disjointed not to have got his move and maybe he needs to sign his contract get his head right and come back with a clear head in a couple of weeks time after the intl break.

Still a top class goalkeeper but can anyone say he has improved over the last three years?

If goalkeepers peak in their late 20's/ early 30's then DDG should still be improving approaching his peak. Yet arguably he dipped last season and he seems to be carrying that form into this season. Beaten twice today at his near post, the second one was particularly bad.

It would be good if the club can keep him, yet I have concerns about tying him to a mega money long term deal.

Shappy repeat the same for Lingard please. Has he improved in any way in the last, 10 years?

But he runs a lot UA, apparently it is a far more important skill and doesn't matter if a player doesn't know how to pass, finish, have any vision or even a first touch, if he is English and has come through our youth setup all he needs to know is how to run a lot.

Credit? What? So whens this credit run out? When we get relegated or something? Until then is he in "credit"?

Truth be told I think DDG would be second choice behind Romero given his lack of form/ confidence at the moment if it weren't for the fact we are desperate to extend his contract.

United Addict, are you saying Lingard hasn't improved since he was 17? Ridiculous. Of course he has, is he a world class player? No. Will he be? Highly unlikely (although Drogba wasn't considered a world class player or even potentially a world class player until he was 27. So it does happen, albeit rarely) .

Is he a hard working dedicated passionate club player who can be a useful squad player? Absolutely.

However, the club have offered DDG a 350k per week, 5 year deal. Yet DDG wants closer to 500k per week.

Whereas, Lingard is on less than 180k per week. So they aren't even on the same page wages wise. If Lingard was demanding a 500k per week contract I'd pack his bags myself.

But this isn't about your obsession with Lingard, it's about whether there is value in giving DDG a high wage long term contract. Based on his form of two years ago it is a no brainer. Yet last season he had what many fans are calling an off season. Yet he has started this season in the same vein.

So is it just a bad patch of form? Or has he plateaued and could even be declining slightly?

I have pointed out on several occasions that DDG isn't a great well rounded goalkeeper. He is a world class shot stopper, yet his distribution, command of his area and general communication isn't great. I have also pointed out that shot stopping is an ability that relies heavily on reactions and athleticism. However, these are the first things a player loses as they age. Which means as DDG gets older his shot stopping ability will decline so unless he can improve his other areas he will quickly drop out of the equation of best goalkeeper in the world.

which further asks the question on whether it makes sense to give him a long term contract on a high wage.

I wouldn't say he's started off this season in the same vein, Shaps. He was very good against Chelsea, and had nothing to do against Wolves. One mistake in the third game. I'd wait for a few more games yet, before I'd be thinking the drop in form might be a more permanent state of affairs.
