Talent i feel is overrated, no matter how talented you are if you won't work hard then no amount of talent will get to on the top.
Players with Discipline and Hard work will always be ahead of just talented guys, Taraabt is a similar case.

Eds, who do you think was not very talented but made it on the top with his hard work?

{Ed001's Note - Sammy Lee? John O'Shea? To be honest none of them get to the top without hard work at some stage, the problem usually is that they get ahead of their peers at a young age and then coast. The ones that usually go furthest are the ones that are not at the top of their age group and so have to continue to work to try and catch up.}

Ed001, John O’Shea was the most naturally talented lb/ rb/ cb/ cdm/ cm/ gk to ever grace Old Trafford. Figo almost retired after the incident.

{Ed001's Note - I thought he almost retired because of the shame of being nutmegged by someone so totally hopeless? I know you are tongue in cheek, but seriously do you not think it shows how bad a player he was that everyone remembers that moment? I mean how many people remember the times a quality player did that? I have been doing research on an article about O'Shea, and I was wondering if it was that unusual a feat or if it was just because it was him. So I started taking notice of each time I watched a game and saw someone get nutmegged. It lasted 3 games before I stopped bothering as I had already run out of fingers and toes to count them on!

O'Shea is one of my favourite non-Liverpool players ever, purely because he gives us all hope we could have made it and won lots of trophies. I think teams need more O'Sheas to encourage kids to play and dream about being players. The ones that will never make it but will kick it about it the park and encourage others to play too, before the real game dies out at a grassroots level.

Though I am disappointed in you Danny, I just noticed you forgot about his stint as a striker!!! Maybe that is what Ole needs to do now, put Jones up front?}

I knew he played as a striker, but second guessed myself.

I genuinely love O’Shea because of his attitude. Like you say, the youth system today seems to be geared toward discovering technical ability and skill. O’Shea was just a really big and strong young lad who applied himself to become a dependable Premier League player. Think Fergie knew the importance of having players like this in the squad. McTommany is potentially one in a similar mould.

{Ed001's Note - you need a bit of everything in a squad and that is vanishing you are right.}

Even CR7 has a great work ethic. Whatever ones level of natural talent it will be enhanced by hard work. However football remains a team game, and however much hard work you put in to enhance your own gifts, if the team doesn't play as a team, it will come to nothing. That's the beauty of players like John O'Shea. Not only did they work hard, they understood and filled their role within the team. They allowed the flair of others to shine.

{Ed001's Note - Shanks used to say you needed 8 to do the carrying and 3 to play the tune.}

You all missed O’shea’s delicate little lob against Arsenal away 2-4. Cantona-esque celebration too.
I think it was overlooked because the Keane/ Vieira tunnel bust up before kickoff.

Jordan Henderson, scott mctominay, jamie vardy are a few that are still about atm.

I will always value hard/ team work above unfulfilled quality.

Ed001 don’t you dare slag off Sheasy! He’s got that winner at the Kop to his name 😉.

{Ed001's Note - I wouldn't dream of slagging him off. I am not sure how you can slag him off, I mean saying he was crap is bigging him up ;-)

It is just a shame more players don't have his attitude to the game. He just wanted to play and didn't care if it wasn't his position or what the tactics were. All he was bothered about was playing the game. You have to love that.}
