There is a rumour that Borussia Dortmund have put a £100 million + figure on Jadon Sancho.
Do you think we would pay that much for him or should we look for a better value player?

{Ed002's Note - I have explained the true cost of the player - you need to read the posts - and he is being offered again to other clubs.}

I think it's clear to Dortmund now that Jadon Sancho won't extend his deal so they are left with selling him his summer or next summer.

The issue is C.V. has limited the market this year, while next year he'll only have a year left on his deal and would be 6 months away from being able to negotiate a free move to a club outside of Germany.

So I would imagine they are trying to drum up interest and see if they can get at least one or two side's other than United interested to drive up the price this summer.

Ultimately by the sounds of it the smoothest and easiest way for Sancho to get his move is for his agent to drop the size of a fee they want.

It's a tricky deal to sort, and it won't be a quick one, with it likely to drag on most of the transfer window, whenever that is. While knowing how United negotiate we could spend most of the summer putting all our eggs in one basket only to agree to just pay what was asked for initially at the last minute.

I must confess I am conflicted about the potential signing of Sancho. Clearly a hugely talented player, who would undoubtedly improve us hugely. Yet, he really has his heart set on a move elsewhere. While the huge amount of money involved in the deal, and the complexity of it, leave me concerned that the club might put all their eggs into one basket. Missing out on a rare chance this summer, where the club could sign multiple players potentially cheaper and easier, improving the entire squad rather than just one position.

A summer of Ighalo, Buendía, Grealish and Rice for example would be far better at improving the whole squad as opposed to signing Ighalo then spending the whole summer chasing Sancho. With the best case scenario being getting him, but a real chance of missing out just as we did with Bruno last summer.

Also considering the club will need to spend significant amounts big time negotiating the exits of players such as Smalling, Jones, Rojo, TFM, Lingard and Pogba.

Can we talk about Jadon Sancho?

Shappy: "Nope"

DanJames, I clearly just wrote a long post about Jadon Sancho. Of course we can talk about him, I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that I don't think we should.

Shappy - I think Utd have always benefited from signing the best British talent as and when it becomes available. Keane, Cole, Rio, Carrick, Rooney amongst others have all provided the Club with years of brilliant and loyal service and have been the foundation of a strong and successful dressing room.

I think Sancho is a huge talent and he also plays in a position that desperately needs strengthening. Whilst the likes of Buendia, Rice and even Grealish may improve squad depth I think Sancho would significantly improve our first 11 and arguably have a greater impact than all those players combined. If we only signed Sancho this summer I believe it would represent a brilliant window. When players of his ability become available, especially considering his age and nationality I believe the Club should be doing everything in its power to try and sign him.

There are loads of players like Rice that can do a decent job in protecting the defence but how many players are capable of scoring in excess of 15 goals and providing an equal number of assists?! If Sancho is available I'd hate to see him go anywhere else.

Players like Rice and Grealish are easily replicated in the market especially for the money being touted. Paying an english premium for them when the likes of van de beek being priced at far less and with a much higher ceiling doesn't make sense to me.

The likes of sancho are few and far between and its not just on the pitch but off the pitch he would be hugely marketable whilst taking on the number 7 shirt he can help be the face of the club for many years. I think the club really do care about all the marketable side (probably too much) for them not to go all in on sancho.

I do see the point where you say we could strengthen other areas with the money asked like dm and cb but to be honest I would rather get sancho and have a season trying to win games 4-3 with the potential in attack we would have.

We shouldn't overpay and we shouldn't settle for mid table players either or that is where we will stay.
Shappy do you really think signing Buendía and Grealish will have us challenging for top spot? They may be some improvement to our general team, but we don't need 'some' improvement, we need significant improvement. Whether that is Sancho or not, I cannot say, but surely it isn't Buendia and Grealish. At least not for me. Will gladly eat my humble pie if ever i am served.

I hope we bring in just 2 players.
Sancho and Saul.
2 top end players who will easily slot into our starting 11 and sort out the glaring deficiencies.

I think we need a player like Sancho. In an ideal world it would be him, but if the cost is too much we should consider someone like Chiesa. We need to be making the starting 11 stronger and especially the right wing role which we’ve been crying out for a bit of quality there for about 7/ 8 years now.

I m just saying the price is too steep and we could get a couple of decent players who also would not have the pressure of justifying a huge price tag. There have been a lot of players who have failed at OT when they are under the pressure of a price tag at a young age. Better to go for experience I feel. i.e Traore, Sane or Zaha would be cheaper and have had the experience in the Premier League.

I usually rate a transfer as to how’ I’d feel if Liverpool or City or a competitor signed them.

Sancho would be an upgrade for anyone

Buendía, Grealish and Rice sound like something a vegan would eat.

Shappy

The club will have to “ spend significant amounts negotiating the exit of. Phil Jones”. Is that the Phil Jones given a new contract by Ole No errors Solskjaer in Feb 2019? No doubt it won’t be the managers decision now but was under Mourinho, oh well.

Sancho, it’s a big decision, a lot of money at a time when finances will be affected by C.V. Clubs can see us coming with the wheelbarrow of cash and we just can’t help ourselves. Do we go over the top, well I would look to strengthen more than just one position and I would be wary of spending stupid on Sancho, much as I would like him.

I would look at Zaha and maybe the Dembele at Barcelona as he hasn’t worked out for them but had real talent. Ok we need to judge his attitude but in present circumstances financially we should use our cash to our advantage not to Dortmunds.

My personal opinion is that we must buy only players that help us go to the next level.

The question is who are these players. I think one is my favoutite Saul who i believe he will have the same impact as Bruno, he Bruno and Scott will be a very good midfield with double pivot of Scott and Saul (given that neither of them are holding midfilders) and Fernandez in front of them. We will take him with Pogbas moneys and a couple sales of other players in addiction.

Then our hole budget can go to Sancho who theoretically is our best option for the right wing but there are questions about this transfers.

As Ed002 said the total cost of this transfer is closer to 200 million than 100 million who Borussia asks, that's a lot of money for a player that prefers to be elsewhere. Secondly, although i agree he is a good player, the times i sawed him play he wasnt great.

Not so great as he double figures suggest, and we must to take into account that Germans defences make me (us) laugh, they give attackers space and a lot of times their defences are at the center of the stadium (you must see the first match Haaland played and you will understand) .

So a lot of money for a player not tested in a difficult league too. So in my opinion in Sancho we will buy potential and a player that may take us in the next lever if he takes his form in Premier League (thats difficult in his first years) or maybe not. He is not the sure bet that Saul is.

Dortmund are quite rightly trying to start an auction for a young quality player. Ordinarily you’d expect all the top table clubs in Europe to be looking at Sancho. And us lol. CV puts a serious dent in many clubs buying power though as will FFP and not least clubs being fixated on other high end targets such as Neymar and Mbappe. Deals for them potentially at Barcelona and Real respectively would effectively put them out of contention for another major signing? Let’s see.

Curious to understand what preferential terms City would have to take their former academy player back, if any. Though they don’t look to be in the mix. Neither do Liverpool. A very worrying sign for them if they’ve no money. I thought we were bad enough.

I think this will boil down to a straight fight between Chelsea and United. Though with the former’s existing purchases in Ziyech and Werner that may suggest playing wise Sancho is a better fit.

I’m sure we will both be offering similar £200k+ wages per week if not higher.

The advantage of Sancho is we know he won’t need time to adapt to the league, the culture, the weather etc. Perhaps the bright lights of London may not quite be the pull in this situation that we are usually faced with when attracting young talented footballers from Europe and elsewhere.

I think we will prioritise Sancho above all other signings and hope we can get him. I share the fear that our track record in signing big names in recent years is not exactly stellar. And a summer long chase with egg on our face then humiliatingly blowing £80m on Grealish on transfer deadline day could very realistically play out too.

I would stay well away from dembele he has talent but has a poor attitude he is also inconsistent and is injured alot.

I don't see why people are worrying about the sancho cost it's not coming out of our pocket and he is clearly the best player to be linked with us if we were not in for players like him I would be worried about our ambition sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate.

Good thread.
I always put it into 3 categories.
What i would like to happen
What i think will happen
What would happen if it was my job to decide?
As fans i think we all want to see certain players sign. We will never agree on that list as a group we probably can't even agree unanimously the top 3 positions that need strengthening. Or we can't agree on who we should sell.
But with my business head on and taking emotion out of the equation. This is a summer to be prudent i feel. There is so much uncertainty.
Id be very happy to get a 6 or 7 off the books and get a top midfielder in to replace pogba if he is one of those 6 or 7.
Rojo jones smalling lingard mata Andreas and pogba. All out reducing wages significantly. Saul and sancho in boost first 11 and a possibly good squad player in too as part of pogba deal. A saving on wages next season and a negative spend on transfers of approx 50m.
James can cover both flanks martial can cover left and greenwood right also at a push so lots of options.
If Pogba were to stay then just go all out for sancho and don't sign anybody else and still get shut of the above 6 they offer little or nothing and are only a drain on our resources. i'd rather let upcoming kids take their squad place which is usually 3rd or 4th choice in a variety of positions.
Rw is a must.
Midfield is a must if pogba leaves.
Other than that in these uncertain times i'd be inclined to cut as much off the wage bill as possible and retain as much cash as possible.

Red Man, you mean Ousmane Dembele?
His injury record is equal to or worse than Phil Jones lol.
That's the last thing we need.

Of course i forgot about sanchez getting as much of his wages off the books would be great. Hard to see him moving on a permenent deal either way it's going to cost a pretty penny.

My concern isn't signing Sancho, it's spending all summer chasing him then not signing him ala Bruno.

We take ages to do any transfer even if we are the only club in for a player but doesn't mean we should stop trying to get these big transfers.
