Quick question don't know if one of the eds or posters can answer, after watching the Chelsea game shouldn't the referee be stopping play when Cahill goes down? Doesn't the ref stop play now for injuries rather than teams having to constantly put the ball out when players fling themselves to the floor.

Personally I felt like willian had plenty of time tomput the ba.

{Ed001's Note - that's a good point, it is not up to the players to put the ball out, it is up to the ref if he thinks it is a bad injury. Players often put it out anyway if it is obvious but it is supposed to be the ref's job to stop play.}

I thought it was up to the ref. he should definitely have called it and I think I would have been a bigger talking point had there been fans I don't actually think it would have happened had there been fans.

Whilst I can understand people saying willian isn't going to stop I still think there's enough time lapsed between the 2 events (injury and cross) that he knew Cahill was injured and should have put it out but that's a personal opinion.

I thought it was down to the Ref, but they need to deem it a "serious" injury such as a head injury or suspected cardiac arrest. Not for pulled muscles or bruises.

Otherwise some players would go down "injured" every time another side broke against them. cough cough City.

In a similar way to how some teams like to make "tactical" fouls to stop counter attacks against them.

He was ready to get a block in or make it difficult and it completely takes him out of the game. you shouldn't get such a big advantage from an injury as this it definitely should have been stopped.

Had he been the striker and nowhere near the play yeah that's fine play on, but he's the defender who's needed to make the challenge.

Its about time someone scored like that. Putting the ball out is bull. If i was a manager i'd tell the press and rest of the league we won't be putting ball out of play for anyone and we don't expect to have it put out for us.
If any player put it out i'd fine them. Its a load of old crap tbh.

Agree Ken. Its just bad luck for Palace but it would make it impossible for referees if they had to assess whether an injury was serious enough to stop the game every time a player went down. Unless there is an head injury or something really obviously terribly serious play should continue.

The player not putting the ball out is choice the ref however should be stopping play.

No he shouldn't dbrooks. He should stop it if its a head injury only.
Nobody dies of a knock on the shin.
How many times after putting the bsll out does the injured player ever have to be substituted. If he's not dying play ball.

I think the correct decision was made not to stop it for the reasons stated above. The only thing about this one is that clearly Cahill is not faking the injury to gain an advantage, he would have got to the ball first if his hamstring didn’t go, so the ref probably could have stopped it based on that. He was correct not to though and it is just very unlucky and one of them things.

I think there needs to be a change to the rules regarding when the physio is allowed on the pitch. If it is a head injury, then the ref should stop play, but if it is just a knock, then the ref should allow play to continue but the physio should be allowed to treat the player on the pitch, much like rugby, and while the player is treated, that player doesn’t count with regards to offsides, and isn’t allowed to play until the ball next goes out. It would allow players to receive treatment immediately no matter the injury, and I think it would stop players feigning injury, at least to some extent, since it would leave their team a player short, for what could be an extended period.

Totally agree. Feigning injury has become a time wasting art, the fans boo to stop play when the team are in trouble. Game should only be stopped for head or serious injuries.

I would go further and put an off field timekeeper in place, maybe even stop the stadium clock so this time wasting, rolling around is seen not to gain anything and by the physio coming on, without stopping the game, they put their own team at a disadvantage.

I've been wondering for a while whether football could consider going down the American football route and be allowed to have rolling subs.

That way the game doesn't have to stop at all for an injury. An injured player goes straight off and a sub just comes on. If the injured player is fit enough to continue after receiving treatment then they can come back on.

Red Man,

Having a clock that stops solves so many problems in football and would help the game to be fairer and more exciting. So many times I spend 10 minutes of the game at OT watching the goalkeeper walk along his line to take a goal kick over and over and the ref does nothing about it. If the clock was stopped he can take all day, all it is doing is giving us a rest before we attack again.

So many of the games since lockdown have had 3 minutes added on at the end. Bearing in mind almost every game before had at least 3 minutes and we are now stopping for over a minute for a drinks break and have extra substitutes you’d expect every game to be at least 4 minutes, probably 5. It is crazy how they just make this figure up.

A stop clock is a good idea, maybe have 40 minute halves and the clock is only rolling when the ball is in play. you don't need extra time then.

However, that might have consequences on how football is played. Possession would become the key form of defending which in turn will further the gap between the top sides and the bottom sides as they will have lost a tactic that levels the playing field. It will mean the side with the best players will win more often than they do now.
