Reading the short article about Lingard on the BBC, it sounds like he'll be staying. Said he had a hard time with the criticism from Ole, who pushed him hard to better himself both on the pitch and off. Sounds like he's had to reevaluate a lot over the past season. He mentioned that Ole told him after the hotel incident, that he was on his last chance.

I still would rather he left as he just isn't good enough, but he seems to be up for staying, claiming he's dedicated to the club.

Off course he’s still committed to the club, but I find it highly unlikely that he will be here once the window closes.

LLV that insta post sounded like a plea to please not sell him. I think we will try to, if he is smart he would just leave otherwise its just 1 more year of sitting on the bench, more likely not even that if we get the back up players we want.

Why wasn't Solksjaer just honest with him and say he's "not in his plans" (not good enough) and should find himself another club.

If Solkjaer believes Lingard (even with his socks pulled up) is ever going to be good enough for Utd, even as a squad player, then there is no way we are going to challenge the best teams anytime soon.

Why not just move him on then use the fee/ wages towards an upgrade? (not bloody Jack Grealish though)

That's because no other club is going to pay him 70-80 grand a week. He has zero chance of breaking in to that first 11 eleven unless we are decimated with injuries. Obviously the lad prefers money more than playing football on a weekly basis.

He has ability and is a useful player to have if you can get him on form. LvG found a use for him, Mourinho found a use for him, Ole for the first 4-6 months found a use for him. His form then nose dived, whether that was due to him not working hard enough or off field distractions who knows.

He signed up with Mino a few months ago and I think we all took that as a sign he was off to new pastures.

Yet the reality is that with the current situation impacting many clubs finances, he might have significantly fewer options that are prepared to buy him and match the wages demands of a player who has been out of form for 18 months.

He has been at United since he was a kid, and this is his dream club. Staying and fighting his way back into contention in his mind might not be the worst option on the table.

My impression is that he believed he should be a guaranteed starter, especially after the World Cup. Maybe he has come to accept a bit part in the squad. The article did show a more ruthless side to Ole that many seem to question.

I have not read the article, but heard he had some family problems that messed with his head. Hopefully he gets some time against LASK, and we can see if he has changed his approach?

What about switching him to other position? As a creative/ atacking midfielder or wing, he simply doesn't show enough, no goals, no assists.
However, he seems to be very aggressive, he wins a lot of balls, he runs a lot, press opponents.
Just a thought.

If he gets his act together -i. e. the lingard we saw in Ole's first few games as as temp, he will be better for the squad than grealish as his attitude is good, will be happy to play a role from the bench, good influence on the youngsters and may end up freeing up cash for us to spend elsewhere.
