Glad to see it looks like the 5 sub rule is being dumped. Would have handed too big an advantage to the top clubs.

Yup now English teams will be disadvantaged in Europe as most the other leagues have voted it in I believe.

I feel kind of mixed about it. While I 100% that in its current format it would give too big an advantage to the top sides, I liked the possibility of it opening up chances for young players to get more minutes.

Maybe they could introduce a 5 sub rule that is more tilted towards giving young players a chance. Maybe you could have 3 normal subs, plus two that had to be players from your own youth academy and had less than 25 first team appearances.

That way there would always be two sub chances for young players and clubs would have a little more flexibility and wouldn't have to choose between playing an injured player or going down to 10 men if a player picks up an injury after the three subs have been made.

While it wouldn't give a disproportionate advantage to the top sides.

Dbrooks, how will they be at a disadvantage in Europe? As in more chance to rest and rotate players or did you mean something different?

Its to many changes, you are changing half your outfield players .

Agree with jred. 5 is too many. i'd perhaps allow an injured player be replaced if 3 subs have been made but its probably too open for abuse.

5 subs was a brilliant idea. Also a better way of giving youth players a chance of first team football. It was a progressive way to improving the English game. Remember when trams had no subs. A poor decision to go against 5 subs. More players would get rest aswell.

I think it opens up far more scope for tactical changes in game. It would enable you to make three subs to change the shape and focus of your side mid game without the concern that you leave yourself open to having to play with 10 men should you pick up an injury.

I think it would freshen things up. I remember having a chat with someone who thought that maybe the American football way might be an interesting way to go. Where you can bring on and off as all players on your subs bench throughout the game. I was sold on that idea as you could see 4 or 5 changes from each side at every set play depending on whether your attacking or defending. Which would be too disruptive.

Maybe 5 subs could be a halfway point that enables more tactical flexibility in game, but avoids chaos.

Why didn’t they just compromise and allow 4 subs?

3 subs, you have to really earn your corn as a manager as well re. in-game management. 5 makes it much easier.
