I think he will get some chances Tim, has to take them. I think we need something else at centre back and I still think tuanzebe could be a very good player but the injuries from last season are concerning.

I have heard that Will Fish is another defender to keep an eye on although he is very young and isn't ready for the first team anytime soon.

Yes, I would be against us signing a central defender this summer until we see how good Mengi can be, he looks like the perfect partner for maguire to me which is exciting.

Deependra Will Fish was absolutely outstanding in his early teens but has stood still for the last 2 to 3 years. Personally I don’t think he will make it at Utd but hope I’m wrong as he is the nicest and friendly kid as well as his family. I think his lack of pace will be his downfall. The academy really hasn’t got anybody who stands out from the u 18’s to the u 16’s, I’m not counting the new foreign lads as I don’t know them.

How many senior games has he played again?

Wasn't he having some growing pains Blackpool Red.

Maybe people aren't giving up on him due to his physical attributes ala Scott McTominay.

But I think the next lad to get proper first team action from the youth sides might be Hannibal Mejbri.

Know he hasn’t many appearances ken just think unless it’s someone like upamecano then there’s no point buying a young CB just for the sake of it, I’d rather give mengi, tuanzebe games. Think if given the choice Ole would choose them over jones, rojo etc.

Agree Tim but we need a new cb.

Keep any young player well away from Greenwood at the minute. He is just attracting trouble.

He is still a kid. But maybe after a season or two he could be a really good partner to Lindelof.

I have very high hopes for Teden Mengi, he looks a real player. Yet he turned 18 this year. Not many centre backs are ready and capable of playing regularly at the top of the game at the age of 18. Certainly not without a genuine world class player alongside them to coach them through the difficult moments in games.

In an ideal world I'd like to see him go out to the Championship on loan for the season. If he can play regularly at that level that could provide him the springboard to step up in the EPL next season.

I don't think we will be able to shift all of Smalling, Rojo and Jones. While Maguire, Lindelof, Tuanzebe and Bailly would still be ahead of him. I'd even wager possibly McTominay who will likely get less minutes in midfield this season and has stepped in at CB on occasion.

My preference would be to sell Jones, Rojo and Bailly. Who are all either injured or not good enough. I'd keep Smalling as first choice with Maguire, with Lindelof and Tuanzebe as 3rd and 4th choice and loan Mengi out for a year.

Then depending on how Smalling has done alongside Maguire, whether Tuanzebe has been able to stake a claim and how Mengi has done on loan reassess whether we have the players in the squad or whether we need to sign another centre back such as Upamecano.

BFRO the Greenwood video doesn't look like weeks ago as quoted he looks quite a bit younger. Looks like they are trying to find a new sterling.

{Ed047's Note - I think it’s that vile rag of a paper digging up stuff just to stir the pot.

The lads apologised and hopefully will learn quickly as a pro footballer to behave properly.

Smalling and Maguire ahead of Lindelof shappy? What? 😂.

Ed047
Exactly my thoughts.
The **** are searching for a new target after Sterling has given them no chances at their propaganda. I don't know why the British "media" is always searching for an English player to hound and harass. Witch-hunt if you like

If they really want to criticize someone and bring public eyes towards a guy in English football then they can't have any easier target than the Messiah himself, Gareth Southgate

Mind you ed47 Southgate did start the witch-hunt against Greenwood and Foden by blaming them for the performance against Denmark, saying it was their fault that England couldn't go out on the pitch to attack and needed to play conservatively. But because Foden is the golden child and the second coming of Jesus for the British press and white they are jumping at Greenwood.

Its time for Greenwood to learn from Sterling and handle himself with class and elegance off the pitch just like he has shown on the field.

{Ed047's Note - the press are an embarrassment to themselves mate but people sadly keep falling for the garbage they print.

The pressure they pile on some of these young guys is ridiculous!

Hopefully he’ll just let his football do the talking in future mate.

The club tried so hard to keep the hype around him to the minimal, we never brought him out to face the press. The club tried to keep him in check and protect him as much as they could.

Then he gets called up by England. Then they bring him out to do the press conference. And everything spirals down from then on.

{Ed001's Note - if you want to know why the English media are on his back, look at the colour of the lad's skin and you will see. It is pure racism. The things they criticised Sterling for would never have been a problem if he was white.}

I did point that out ed1. Why people even read those papers is something I can't grasp at.

{Ed001's Note - I will never understand why people don't have them blocked. Vile rags.}

Agree Eds, this type of victimization can break a player.

{Ed001's Note - very much so. That is exactly what they want as well.}

13 Sep 2020 18:32:36
Its disgusting, he's an 18 year old boy and ed001 its exactly the reason you've stated why he is what feels like to me being targeted. Foden didn't have half the negative press and I'm sure they could dig up irrelevant things from his teenage years but they choose not to (not that I want them to) southgate has really not helped matters either. Hopefully Mason gets his head down and does what he's good at and gets the right protection from the club and people around him sorry to rant but its glaringly obvious what's going on.

Angel, fact is that at 80m and being our captain Maguire isn't going to be dropped.

So what we need to do is find a player who works best with him.

The issues Lindelof has had is that he doesn't communicate often enough, gets bullied in the air and lacks the pace and awareness to cover behind Maguire. It also doesn't help that as a former midfield his natural instinct is to push forward rather than stay a little deeper.

Smalling is very quick, strong in the air, a good communicator and is a pure defender. His natural instinct is to stay deeper and cover his partner.

All things that for me make him an ideal partner for Maguire. The issues Smalling has as a defender is that he has a habit of shirt pulling which might be a bigger issue with VAR. While his passing is very average. He's decent with short passes, but struggles with medium to long range passes. Yet with Maguire alongside him we would have a very good ball playing CB. So Smalling would only be required to pass 10-15 yards to Maguire.

He has arguably been the best defender in Serie A last season, a league renowned for great defending.

Smalling's issue has never been defending, it is his limitations as a "modern" ball playing defender.
