Next united game away at newcastle to be on sky sports box office for £15 quid pay per view.

Initially though this was sky and bt being greedy but the money is actually going back into the clubs coffers (not sure what the split) as part of trying claw back some revenue that's been lost from gate receipts.

Thoughts, eds or posters, i don't see this going down well with supporters espically with what are going to be tough economic times and restrictions still in place.

Surprised united didn't think of this sooner, could have afforded the sancho deal if we all chipped in 😂.

{Ed025's Note - i think its disgusting DSG, we have gone though austerity and now covid has hit the ordinary joe,s coffers, people are being made redundant all over the place and lots of people have had their hours cut, not the time for me to be stinging them for more, a lot are already paying for subscription tv in the form of sly or BT and now they want more, if they made it a fiver then it would still be wrong but i imagine affordable for most mate..

It’s a joke. The clubs are paying players 100’s of thousands a week yet, fans who are losing jobs or pay have to fork out extra money on top of what we already pay on subscriptions is so out of touch with reality.

{Ed025's Note - absolutely caolan..

I would like to think if I was a footballer on 100k per week I would be giving up 10% each week to a charity . i'd still keep the Bentley and the topless models but got to give something back. Clubs, agents, players could really earn some brownie points now by publicly stating some of their money was going into the lower leagues, food banks etc etc . if people are at home now 4 games on a weekend costs 60 quid? shooting themselves in the foot, its ripping folk off.

Is it a game that wouldn't normally of been on TV.

Yh jred, the 5 games that usually wouldn't have been on tv i think.

May as well cancel my sly subscription if this is the way forward. Back to streaming I go.

It’s for the non contracted TV games isn’t it?! Eg Sky don’t show any Saturday 3pm games so you can pay extra for those. Their argument will be that you never had any opportunity to see these games live before (illegal streams apart) and they are offering you that if you wish to pay. The whole tv rights is a joke you’d need a subscription to sky sports, bt sports and Amazon to view all premier league games that’s roughly £50 a month on top of the normal fees, unless on a deal.

7.) 09 Oct 2020
09 Oct 2020 19:22:59
Jred there’s 5 games that they hadn’t put on a tv slot so they’ve started this pay per view rubbish. The claim is the money is to be reinvested. I’m not sure if that’s further down the pyramid, but if they want to do something how about the clubs giving something, or the players coming together.

8.) 09 Oct 2020
09 Oct 2020 19:30:59
Just popped into my head that maybe they will let us pay for the United games in 5 x £2 instalments, with the other £4.95 only payable if we win the league 🤣.

09 Oct 2020 19:41:03
It’s so out of touch.

Footballers are paid literally hundreds of thousands of pounds per week.

I’ve been considering cancelling Sky recently due to their political underbelly, this could be the nail in the coffin for my subscription.

10.) 09 Oct 2020
09 Oct 2020 19:43:47
If its for games outside the normal TV package, I don't really see the problem .

{Ed025's Note - the problem is jred that people are paying vast sums as it is with sly and BT to watch football mate, its just greed..

11.) 09 Oct 2020
09 Oct 2020 20:09:23
Jred, all games have been televised since lockdown.

This is pure greed.

I pay £80 p/ m to Sky, some people pay over £100.

The do this and say the money goes to clubs is ridiculous.

What they should have done is televised Championship, L1 and L2 for a nominal fee, with all profits going to the clubs that actually need it.

To do it for premier league clubs just shows how out of touch Sky are with their customers.

12.) 09 Oct 2020
09 Oct 2020 20:30:17
The worry is, that it’s a success and Sky, bt etc adopt the same strategy for more and more games moving forward. It wouldn’t shock me if that’s something they did.

09 Oct 2020 21:04:53
Wazza I pay over 100 for sky myself but I get what I pay for x amount of games a year .
If these are additional games outside the TV deal surely there going to cost money?
Is this not the clubs making money in the absence of match going fans

Ed25 people are paying vast sums but their not getting anything less for what they paid for at the start of the season .

On a different note if you paid a couple of billion for football rights, woukd you be happy if people could then watch a game for free .
Unfortunately I think this is the future can you imagine how much a team like united could make from ppv every game.

{Ed025's Note - and what will they do with the money jred?, pay higher fees for players, give bigger bungs to their agents, or pay the shareholders higher dividends? i think its obscene mate, people are using food banks and choosing whether to heat or eat not to mention all the homeless which will rise significantly, i dont think that in these times of adversity i think its classless..

Im with Jred.

These games weren't to be shown on live tv and now u atleast get a chance to watch it but the 15 pound per game is taking the piss.

If it was a fiver like someone mentioned then that will be bearable.

Its not like their forcing you to pay 15 quid per game and i think only the stupid/ hardcore or rich fans will do it.

I'm with the Ed, encouraging people who have been thru a lot financially recently to not only pay for overpriced subscriptions i'm sure many already are, but to also pay more for games on box office, as disgusting as it gets for me. Its a rip off the subscriptions cost as it is tbh but we all put up with it to watch. Tbh I'm rapidly losing interest in watching football in general, Newcastle v Man Utd £15, a joke.

Ed25 you are absolutely right and I couldn’t put it better myself.

This move is incredibly out of touch. 2020 has been a step back in terms of extreme poverty and here we have billionaires trying to take more money from the working class. Closer to home, the chancellor has just this week told tens of thousands of people, who work in arts and media, to learn a new trade.

You are spot on in saying where the money will end up. The system is designed to keep rich people rich.

And if Premier League clubs are struggling, maybe their employees should help them out by agreeing to a pay cut.

I had to do that myself in 2008 to delay redundancies during a recession, when thousands lost their job. And we don’t earn in years what some footballers earn in one single week.

You can always spot the greedy billionaires in a time of need, because they put their hand out and ask for more.

{Ed025's Note - i wish we were wrong wassa but were not mate, avarice is alive and kicking especially in the world of football and its those at the bottom of the scale who will end up losing out...and they need it the most..

after what we have seen of united up to yet welsh they should be paying me to watch.

Simple lads. Just don’t pay it. Job done. Football is so out of touch - pushes me away from the game every week, especially combined with the turgid nonsense we’ve been served in the form of “entertainment” for years as well as the type of human beings who run our club. Almost, very nearly, had a stomach full of this crap. Not that it’ll change anything.

I have read this thread with interest and whilst I understand the points of view, I reply only to offer a single thought. If you don't like it, don't pay it - it's that simple. This is a package on top of what is already offered and - I guess - aimed at match-goers that want to watch their team live even if they aren't features in one of the games featured for live TV. Some people will lap this up but anyone interested in this has three choices. A. Stump up. B. Miss out. C. Find another way. I am not trying to be a so and so here and don't wish to cause offense. As it happens, I have been in camp C for several years now and like to think that if more of you walk it like you talk it things will change, for no other reason than they have to because the "customer" has made their feelings clear with their wallets. The more people that simply up their monthly subscription to get on board with these sorts of things, the more they will continue and the harder Marcus will have to work for his knighthood to fix poverty. Peace out.

I agree with the notion of don’t pay it, and I won’t be paying for it. It will just push more people to streaming.

It doesn’t stop us having a discussion about it. After all that’s what this site is for.

what i am seeing at the moment ed25 jose would have been dragged from pillar to post. as regards money for ppv if it went to clubs going under like maccasfield for the price of a couple of prem players weekly wages you might not like it but its better than going into some rich twats pocket i thought that is were grass roots starts.

{Ed025's Note - as in life daz the rich are going to get richer and the poor poorer, the teams like macclesfield will go to the wall and the bottom 2 tiers of english football will eventually become semi professional, it would be nice if the top clubs could sponsor the lower sides and help them out financially but i just cant see it im afraid mate..

Here in sweden there is a service that costs less than 35 quid a month to stream all epl games. Some may not be live but you get access to them on the day. This service also comes with tv, some films and an array of other sports/ football leagues.

The cost of services in the uk is obscene and completely unjustified. Especially as the numbers in poverty keep growing.

Im afraid that if the ppv is deemed successful, then that's the way tv deals will be structured in the future.

23.) 10 Oct 2020
10 Oct 2020 09:02:12
When the stadiums open it will be more for a ticket than the 15 ppv .
Should people not pay that either?

Of course football is out of touch it has been for years and people where struggling before C.V.
Its obscene what footballers get paid regardless of a 15 ppv game .

{Ed047's Note - and therein lies the answer to this question.

Fans that often cannot get to games pay Sly and or BT to watch football.

Match going fans would pay way more than £15 to physically go to a game so despite the conditions under which we live are they not making this a much cheaper option for those that don’t subscribe, your normally match going supporter.

Is it then those that do subscribe simply saying F you I’m not paying beyond my x amount of money for games I wouldn’t see under my subscription.

24.) 10 Oct 2020
10 Oct 2020 09:33:28
47 yer that pretty much it.

{Ed047's Note - it’s the other side of the coin jred, can’t argue about the money men making themselves richer but for some they will see this as a good deal, to watch the clubs they love for something that would normally cost 5 or 6 times more.

25.) 10 Oct 2020
10 Oct 2020 09:35:30
At a time the government want people not to gather or enter other peoples homes maybe pay per view is not a great idea .

The temptation for people is then gather and split the bill which is the exact opposite of what the government is seeking to achieve .

{Ed047's Note - I’m not a fan of any government Slate but I think who ever was making these decisions would find themselves damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

As I said to jred, I’d like to think there is help in there somewhere, basically for those that don’t subscribe but would normally pay way above and beyond £15 to go to a game and I think they way outnumber those who subscribe.

26.) 10 Oct 2020
10 Oct 2020 09:55:49
You can’t draw comparisons to paying to watch on TV as opposed to the whole match day experience live. Not even close. I still recall the first time I went to watch Utd with my Dad and walking up the steps to see the pitch. The smells, sounds, cold etc. Pure brilliance.

27.) 10 Oct 2020
10 Oct 2020 09:55:12
Ed 47 I just feel the game is between two sides with high C.V. rates in their areas and both areas are having difficulties already making people follow C.V. rules about gathering .

Now there's a financial incentive to gather to pay less money by splitting the fee for the cost of the match, this happens with all the big boxing fights and it's something which although is wrong in current circumstances, it is also inevitable .

{Ed047's Note - I know slate, I’m not disagreeing and everything surrounding COVID has been about the individual following simple guidelines.

Everyone of us knows how to avoid it but so many want to muddy and confuse that and that’s why it’s going nowhere fast mate.

28.) 10 Oct 2020
10 Oct 2020 10:31:14
Supply and demand, basic principle. The games were not going to be broadcast live, so instead of people trying and buying Greek Sky cards or whatever they do these days, they are putting it on PPV. I imagine the 50,000 geordies who aren’t paying for the match ticket and the United away fans may think it’s the best they can do. I guess clubs are not getting match day income and this may be a substitute. I am not against it, but as per my opening words it is supply and demand, you can’t see it live unless you pay for it and they know there will be a demand. My problem is the price. Looks to me like they have gone to the greedy end of the price, £15 and that is the issue. It is also foolish, if it had been reasonably priced far more would have watched. Is it better to sell 1M at £5 or 100,000 at £15? The Broadcasters also could have used it to sell the product, entice more into their packages but no they go for £15. I am torn, don’t really want to shell out £15, but if it’s on it’s tough not to. However, if extra money goes to the owners and not subscribing squeezes them in any way, I won’t watch. The principle is ok, given they are not scheduled for broadcast, the price is a rip off and that is my issue. I won’t pay for the big boxing in the same way.

What we keep forgetting is this is a business and a profit oriented at that. If fans want to make a statement, they should just boycott sky for some time.

{Ed002's Note - It is nothing to do with the Government or with Sky or other broadcasters. It was a decision taken by a majority of Premier League clubs and the broadcasters were asked to facilitate it.}
