Kind of fed up reading about this pursuit of Varane. I don't understand why it is so protracted. Why can we not just make a fair bid for the player? If it's accepted - great. If not - just move on to another option.

{Ed077's Note - Real Madrid had a change of coach and Varane was involved in the Euros. The transfer window has only just opened, so dont get bogged down already..

God forbid the guy goes on a holiday and decides to leave decisions about his professional life until he gets back.

A lot of that French side went for holiday over the summer generally post kickoff.

Really? I mean he's no Ben White or Tyrone Ming's but isn't that sort of the point?

The signing of top class players isn't something that is normally wrapped up in a few days.

Varane is the type of player who could have the pick of the top clubs. He could sign a new deal with Real Madrid, or he could sign for PSG, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Chelsea or United all of which I would imagine have a level of interest in him as they all are looking for a CB this summer.

Why jump on the first offer you get?

If you're selling your house and you have 10 viewings booked and the first viewing makes you an offer straight away, do you take it without the other 9 viewings happening? No you wait until everyone who's interested in your house views it and see what offers you get. You might even get to play 2 or 3 people off against eachother to get a better deal.

Varane like all players has had a very tiring and draining year. He's having a much needed break to recover and will make a decision afterwards. By which time he might have another offer or two on the table and he can pick the one that is best for him.

I remember 20 years ago when there was a lot less known about a transfer until things really started to happen. You wouldn't often find out about a transfer until a day or two at most before they were done and the player holding up his new shirt. Now we have loads of "sources" of which players we are interested in, and we know months before any transfer actually happens, in our case sometimes a year. It makes it feel like a much more drawn out process. It's isn't, it's just that multi million pound deals take time.

Yes. I agree - up to a point. However, the longer a deal takes to close, the smaller the number of top quality players available becomes in that position. We may end up with our fourth or fifth choice - or none at all.

Jodler,

Who isn’t available now that was available 2 weeks ago then?

Varane is a world class CB. If there is a chance we could get him we should be in for him no matter how long it takes. I’d argue we need 2 CBs though. Bailly, Jones, Lindelof and Tuanzebe are surely squad players at best. I think Lindelof gets the most games and the worst press from those but think his best position may be back up to Maguire. Bailly is made of glass let’s face it even though he’s a Hercules fitness wise compared to Jones. There’s less than half a player between them though in terms of availability. Tuanzebe looks to be going out on loan. We should be signing Torres for me irrespective of what happens with Varane.

You simply can't sighn a player when you want no matter the money. For a transfer there are three parties, us the selling club and the player.
Even if we do what's best and even if we make a very good offer, its up to them to decide if and when to join our team.
