I think with Ronaldo coming in, we are even more loaded up top, and Pogba returning to midfield would make sense. Pogba in the short term makes sense at LW with what he shown in the first two games, but long term he needs to return to the midfield. Tomorrow we can start with Sancho, Greenwood, and Pogba up front, but soon enough, there will be Ronaldo, Cavani and Rashford demanding minutes.

Amad sounds likely to be be loaned, and you have to wonder where this leaves Martial and James, let alone Lingard. All three could easily be sold. With all that talent up front, we ought to be playing a 4-3-3. All the more reason why getting a true DCM would make sense.

Neves could slot in a midfield three behind Pogba and Bruno. Rice seems unlikely. As does Camavinga of late. Bissouma is also a player who could improve us a lot in the midfield.

Good post Z. You have to think Ronaldo will start most games he is fit and available for. That leaves 2 starting berths for sancho rash Mason cavani.

In all honesty Ken, I think a midfield 4 with split strikers of cristiano and greenwood would be very effective in some games. But I think when all are fit and available well see a front three of rashford cristiano and Sancho.

I don’t think Pogba is good enough to play as one of a midfield two when the other is Scott or Fred. If we sign a defensively solid midfielder, I can see us switching from a 4-2-1-3 to a 4-1-2-3 with Pogba occupying the left side of the 2. Otherwise he’ll probably carry on on the left until Rashford is fit and then rotate with Bruno and Rash for the LW and CAM positions. That’s why a CDM is so important, as it allows us to play Donny or Pogba in their preferred positions without displacing Bruno or Rash in the team.

I can see United trying the 4-3-3 formation, and then varying between a 3-5-1-1 and a 3-2-5 during game time. I think having Varane at the back will allow Shaw to zip up and down the left, Fernandes in his number 10 role, Ronaldo up top. I'd like to see Pogba, van de Beek and Mctominay in midfield, Sancho on the right, Rashford on the left. Basically how Mancini sets up Italy.
Having Varane, hopefully, should allow United to try the system and play 8-10 metres further up the pitch.

Ronaldo is a United legend, one of the greatest players ever but his signing does strike me as slightly peculiar, we're heavy up front and I feel other areas needed addressing. Still, brings an amazing mentality and desire to win, which we have definitely lacked in some games.
Champions League final this season anyone?
