So Ronaldo returns wearing the number 7 shirt and all is right with the world once again.

Im surprised the premier league agreed. What would the eds say were the special circumstances for them to allow it?

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea and no interest.}

Ok great he got 7 and Cavani was happy with 21. What. A. Load. Of. Nonsense.
To the above poster about Di Maria, grow up.

Why would he need to grow up? Di Maria could have kept quiet but has gone out of his way to bad mouth the club several times. Th man has no class and there is nothing wrong in pointing that out.

Maybe you should also direct your response towards Di Maria as he is the one who continues to give interviews slagging of the club to all, instead of asking questions of himself. So I do not need you or your comments.
If you want to put up a defence of him feel free to do so.

Apparently a precedent had been set back in 2012/ 13 with Spurs selling Van de Vaart, Adebayor took his number and Loris took Adebayor's.

I think it's poor form to speak badly of a former player. It didn't work out for him here, but like several others in recent times he started well and got worn down by the negative tactics we were employing at the time. It's clear that his personal life was affected and he was quite unhappy. I'm not his biggest fan either but I recognise that sometimes it doesn't work out for several reasons and it has damn all to do with the number on his shirt. He was clearly asked about it and responded as I think anyone would. That's why I think you need to grow up.

DonRed,

Probably DiMaria needs to grow up. Everyone does go through difficult phases in their careers but that doesn't mean you keep slagging your former employers at any given chance.

As a professional footballer he should know better that there is a lot of emotion, pride, passion and memories attached with a shirt number and it means a lot to everyone at the club especially the fans. You just can't undermine or disrespect that.

Clearly shows his ego is hurt big time by the fact that he failed to deliver and didn't live up to the expectations of the no.7 shirt. Seems he hasn't been able to accept that till now.

I agree with di Maria its only a shirt no. Its no big deal. I get Ronaldo wanted it its all about his credit brand not about the history and tradition of the Jersey at united.
Its only a no imo no biggie.

It's like a soap opera. Di Maria blames everyone else but himself.

While if you listen to LvG he wanted all the big name players with the big time ego's that the club promised to get him but failed to deliver. Yet the one big name player with the similarly big ego the club did sign, LvG fell out with and couldn't get a tune from. With Di Maria leaving less than 12 months since he joined.

Truth be told both were probably in the wrong to a certain extent, while the club made the mistake of pairing two such people together.

Ultimately it's a mess that no one comes out of smelling like roses. Best forgotten about and moved on from for all concerned.

Shirt numbers are clearly important at united, especially to the fans (even if some people don’t agree) because of the legends that have worn them in the past, I can only assume Di Maria’s quotes were taken out of context but if they weren’t, which it wouldn’t surprise me with how he behaved at the club and afterwards, then it’s certainly him that needs to grow up. I couldn’t stand the guy before these quotes to be honest so doesn’t make much difference to me.

Why would the premier league not agree? Hardly like it makes someone play better with what shirt number they have and with 21 being made available it was a no brainer.

Correct gds2 it makes no difference what shirt people wear in terms of performance. Its only important to Ronaldo for his CR7 brand.
Some do have an emotional connection and I can understand that as I said it makes no difference to me personally as I don't have an emotional connection to any player. They all come and go and are only important while they are here imo.
