Arnold to replace Woodward by the looks of it. More of the same then!

It's too early to target him with the same brush. Admittedly I would have preferred someone with experience to have come in. I had hopes for VDS to join the club as CEO.

Don’t like this promotion from within as it smacks of jobs for the boys and rewarding Yes men…I hope to be proved wrong.

Exactly what qualifications does VDS have to be considered for CEO of the biggest club in the world (arguably)?

AJH,

None at all, I think people are getting confused with a director of football or head of operations or something, why he would be CEO I’ve no idea. People showing a huge lack of understanding.

Isnt van de sar the CEO of Ajax with overmars being the DoF?

All you need at United is emotional bonding, loyalty and good standing relationship at the club to get the top jobs.

As DSG pointed out at least VDS is the CEO of Ajax to be considered for the job.

Isnt it ironic, Tony? When people ask the same question of Ole, they are called negative.

CEO is completely different to DOF, Manager, or Coach but let’s not let that get in the way of bashing Ole.

These days nothing gets in my way of bashing Ole, Tony :D :D.

VDS has 0 experience on the commercial side of things, that isn't his job at ajax.

Van der Sar was Ajax's marketing director, and has been promoted to CEO. I'm pretty sure that includes a fair amount of commercial experience bolger.

You guys do realise that the position of CEO is not actually a marketing role?

Edwin has a masters degree in sport and brand management.

So I would imagine he is fully able and wholly competent at a sporting director position.

It was always obvious the Arnold would take over, the Glazers will want a certain level of continuity and someone who will very much be "their man". While a brief look back at Arnold's career he has often taken Woodward's sloppy seconds when Ed has moved on.

There are two ways to look at this, the first is in a negative light that nothing will change and it will be more of the same. The second is that the transition between Gill and Woodward was a mess. Whereas, Woodward and Arnold will be able to have in theory a much smoother transition. Which should hopefully cause less upheaval. While we as fans are crying out for changed based on the past 8 years of footballing experience, commercially the club has been a huge success in that time. The issue isn't that the commercial side has been run poorly, but that the commercial success hasn't been funnelled into sporting success.

Arguably we have seen a clearer sporting strategy over the past few transfer windows which looks like it could bring around sporting success in time. Is now the right time to rip up everything the club has been building just because we feel the new guy might be a little too close to the Glazers?

Wood rather Woodward had kept the job if I’m honest. It took him years to figure out what he was doing, but I don’t think he’s done too badly as of late.

No chance we will see a footballing CEO in charge of Man Utd. It will always be a business background CEO who has footballing advisors.

Not quite sure why this would be surprising to anyone.

EnglishStan, a degree doesn't make you necessarily competent in a job. Mine was in History and Politics, but I didn't walk out after, thinking I could be the chief curator of the National Museum 😁. Practical experience is essential, and Edwin is still a novice in that regard.

Spot on Dodgy. The owners clearly see two very distinct sides to the club, the commercial side and the footballing side. Seeing as their interests lay mainly in the commercial side they are never going to allow footballing ideas to dictate the financial matters.

While the Glazers are the owners the money side of the club will always dictate what the football side can do and NEVER the other way around. While as fans we might find this frustrating, in truth its probably the right way to do things. Allowing decisions to be made for footballing reasons as if in a financial vacuum only ever leads to financial ruin and possibly administration.

Look at how poorly Barcelona have been run in recent years, the constant increasing wages they gave to messi, the huge fees and wages they have given to big name expensive signings like Coutinho, Greizmann, Dembele all signed for over 100m, then Zlatan, Neymar, Suarez and De Jong all signed for between 60-80m.

Of those 7 signings, bought for over 650m, four of which failed completely, two were a success but have both now left the club and the last one has been good so far but hasn't had a huge impact so far.

They have gone from having Neymar, Suarez and Messi as a front three to Depay, Braithwaite and Fati. Even then several players had to accept pay cuts just to register the new signings.
