Hands up who thought we'd make top 4 before Ole came in. No, I didn't think so.

I'm just happy we're in with a fighting chance of it at this stage of the season.

One fairly unlucky defeat against a good team, doesn't change the fact that most of us would have given our right arm to be in this position in the last days of José's reign.

Yes we were unlucky to be honest.
We always looked dangerous when we had a go at them.
We hit the post twice and Arsenal never really carved us open.
The penalty changed the game.

Martial coming back for next game will hopefully make a big difference.

A fairly unlucky defeat to a club that is a waste of a Champions league place.

I too though we just failed to convert or make the final pass better, the peon was a shocking decision and really killed it. Thought Fred was very good today, amazing what a bit of confidence can do, think Fred, pogba and Herrera could be a very attacking more midfield option in the coming weeks. The emotions of mid week didn't help either, but we played well, created just weren't as lethal as recently. Still think we will make top four. Watching wolves today our FA cup game is going to be very tough too.

Fred definitely pushed the Chelsea player. No need to with Smalling covering.

I thought Fred was average and that McTominay should never have been dropped.

11 Mar 2019 10:34:09
Fred was ok today. I thought Matic was the problem as he was too slow and off the pace. He didn’t close down Xhaka for the first goal and his distribution was poor.
Think if McTomminay had played then we would of closed Arsenal down better and probably had more possession.
We miss Herrera as well.

Bad day at the office today. Had a bit of a bad feeling today and just felt like we wouldn’t be at the races. We looked sluggish and flat for the first 30. I don’t think the formation helped and when changed we looked better. Started the second half well and we created a lot of chances. I thought Lukaku should have buried a few of his chances today. His finishing was poor but his overall play was excellent. He is brimming with confidence but his finishing really let him down.

We were bound to have a loss and unfortunately it came in a massive game for top 4. Call me cynical but I think top is gone with arsenal’s Run in being so easy. I would put all our eggs in one basket for the champions league tbh. Shaw was brilliant once again and j thought Fred was really good at times today. Rashford looks like he’s carrying an injury. We should not get too down about today. We learn from this and go again.

Well spurs aren’t exactly secure in 3rd and games aren’t played on paper, arsenal will drop points same as us and Chelsea and spurs, a way to go yet, we wasn’t quite at it, we still was the better team in terms of chances created, one of them days.

Still 8 games left if we can win the games coming up and are still within a sniff come the city Chelsea games I think we will be fine.

Spurs have had games left.

Could come down to the Chelsea game for a top 4 place.

The togetherness and positivity around the club has been incredible recently. Not going to feel too down about a game that just didn't go our way.

Yes we have to be more clinical in front of goal. Yes Dave the Save made a bad error in reading the shot. Yes the penalty was a soft as the turf under Steven Gerrards boot. But I thought we were always in the game and some days you just pick yourself up and go again.

We can still finish ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea and maybe Tottenham. Lot of football to be played yet.

In Ole we trust :)

Massive loss a win I think would have pushed Arsenal out of the race for top 4, we cannot afford to drop points to city and Chelsea now. With spurs and Chelsea dropping points we could have put ourself into strong position, maybe the wake up call some of our players need after celebrating Wednesday like they won the quadruple.

10 Mar 2019 22:02:20
Jaime,

Do you think they shouldn’t have celebrated like that on Wednesday after one of the best nights in our history?

Beaten at our own game today maybe even guilty of believing in our own hype.

The first 30 minutes weren't good enough. There was a real lack of intensity and aggression. We were passive and allowed Arsenal to grow in confidence. Matic looked rusty and well off the pace. A De Gea howler and Matic had to close the shot down quicker, the way he just ambled out was criminal especially in such a big game. The work rate and desire was missing for 30 mins. I don't mind sitting deep but there must be pressure on the ball and a desire to close down when the opposition enter the final third.

The second half was better and we pressed higher but Arsenal always looked dangerous on the break. Fred was guilty of carelessly giving the ball away in a really good attacking position and they go straight down the other end and he gives a stupid penalty away. Ok it was soft but there is no need to make that challenge, show him down the line and block the cross. He made two bad mistakes in a matters of minutes and we got punished. On such fine margins games are won and lost. Stay in the game, considering other results a draw would have been more than acceptable in a difficult away fixture.

For me the desire and work rate was missing today. Yes we created chances but we were timid and that real desire and hunger to close down and put the opposition under pressure was lacking. Arsenal beat us at our own game. We never looked secure and they always looked likely to catch us on the break. From an attacking perspective we were guilty of not releasing the ball quickly enough and getting caught in possession.

It's hard to be too critical but after Wednesday I expected us to be flying. I thought we'd at least get a point and feel we've missed a huge opportunity. I just can't help feeling disappointed.

Maybe I'm being a touch harsh but I'm now judging us from a higher standard. Too many individual errors and a lack of intensity cost us the game today.

Nice line up today, looks like 442, hope the lads are riding on the wave of energy from midweek and not exhausted by it.

Big opportunity for Dalot and Fred, and Lukaku who has played his way back into the first team in recent weeks.

With Arsenal having an easy run in I really do tho k we will struggle to get 3rd or 4th place now. We Will have two hard games against Wolves plus obviously against City it won't be easy. Today we had to win especially as both Spurs and Chelsea didn't win this weekend. If we don't make the Champions League places it will seriously impede our chances of getting the players we need to improve and also impede our chances of fighting for the league title. Bearing this in mind how do you think Ole handles the match today?

Agree2 Disagree1

10 Mar 2019 14:57:45
I'm a little bit worried about today. Fatigue could be a factor for both teams but Arsenal will be really up for it after the Cup game. It's a massive 6 pointer given Spurs' result yesterday. I think we can terrorise their defence with our pace but it might be a backs to the wall job for long periods. Here's hoping the Ole effect and positive vibes in the camp carry us on to another huge 3 points. Arsenal have an easy enough run in after today so it's vital we go for the win. C'mon United!

Just a quick post around buying ready made talent VS developing from our academy.

I see a lot of posts and media linking us with a RW, in particular Sancho, which would be a mouth watering prospect.

My only thinking is how would this affect Chong?

Would people prefer to get Sancho at the risk of loosing Chong?

Believable3 Unbelievable0

I think we could accommodate both of them especially if Sanchez and Mata both depart.

In my opinion chong needs a couple of years of loan experience. 1 in championship or PL ( if anyone is interested) to get used to the pace of the English league and 1 year somewhere in Spain.
City has 2 world class players in almost all the positions and still I don't see players complaining or media coming out with stories of unrest. I don't think we should have any problem either if we buy someone for RW.

10 Mar 2019 15:50:11
I wouldn't hold city up as the example, how many first team minutes is Foden getting? There is not really a route into the city or Chelsea first team for young players, why they keep going to those teams is beyond me.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Mar 2019 21:45:15
It's a tough balancing act bring through youth players. One the one hand, you don't want to block their path entirely. On the other, you don't want it too easy for them. But in the end you have to make it competitive. They have to make it on merit. If Chong is good enough, then he needs to be patient and take his chance. Sancho is a fair bit ahead in his development and it's quite rare that someone so young, is playing regularly for a top club.

If you look at the class of 92, only Giggs was in the year as a 17 year old. The other lads were 19 and 20. There's no rush for chong right now. A loan move would do him good.

I know some Utd fans will disagree with me here, but I really want to see Liverpool win the league this year. I'd rather Utd win it obviously, but that's not realistic at this stage, even if we keep up the recent form and win most or even all of our remaining games.

I really rate Klopp as a manager, and I wanted him to replace SAF at utd. His style of football is different from SAF's, but has a lot of similarities, and would have been a natural evolution of style which the players could have adjusted to and fans would have appreciated. Instead we got 3 managers who didn't have us playing anything remotely like the style of football we came to expect under SAF.

The way Klopp has Liverpool playing is great to watch, and since Utd aren't going to win the league this year, I'd rather see the title go to Liverpool, playing the way they are, than City (even though City play a more entertaining style than Pep used at Barca, it's still using possession defensively a lot, which is the antithesis of good football in my opinion) .

Also, if it's one or the other, I don't want Liverpool winning the CL, because Utd could still win that, whereas the EPL is gone for us. You can have the EPL, we'll take the CL, sound fair? ;)

It's going to be Liverpool or City. Personally, of the two, I'd rather see Liverpool win it, because I prefer their style of football to City's.

If Spurs where still in it, I'd prefer them, but they aren't.

@Faithhinworks - No. I don't think the players are particularly temperamental (with one or two exceptions), just that JM crushed the spirit of the team.

So long as that doesn't happen again, and it took JM (one of the most toxic managers around) a couple of years to manage that, I think we'll be fine.

Redevilfan, I really don’t remember the post you mentioned and I’ve searched and can’t find it. It certainly is fantasy football at the moment and way above any expectations I had.

If we win today then I think 3rd is there for the taking. Chelsea still have a game in hand but are inconsistent, we have the momentum and the mood so that makes today’s game a huge one.

And disagreeing with each other is fine mate.

For me Ole has put the long lost passion and romance of football back in to Old Trafford. By all means accuse me of looking through rose-tinted glasses, but if a manager makes me do that then he's doing something right. I haven't done that for years. Football is a joy again. Matches take too long to come around. Press interviews are interesting.

Its now Ole Trafford. He now has my respect above and beyond what he achieved as a player for United. I don't buy this "anybody could have done this", I'm sorry but that's utter nonsense Mr. Ince. "This" is now quite incredible. Ole is demonstrating an ability to work with, respect and listen to his coaching team, make shrewd and brave team selections, make effective substitutions, promote and motivate youth players, recognise and utilise the strengths of the experienced players, mobilise the fanbase and deliver results time and time again - some in the most incredible of circumstances.

Taking Ole out of the debate, looking for the 'logical' best fit has not worked. In some cases there was a serious lack of logic anyway. Ole is a dam good fit. There may be weaknesses but United is a club that promotes youth - and that ethos should in some ways be shone on the manager too. He is young and inexperienced, just like so many now legendary players from the past. I look at him and see so much potentia. The guy drips class, humility and has not once frowned, snarled or shown any resentment to the press. How refreshing.

If he is having a fraction of the impact upon the players that he is the fan base then we are on the right path. Personally I really don't see what Blanc (mentioned elsewhere) offers that's worth the risk of changing. What am I missing? He may be a tactical genius, and I haven't even researched his CV because it shouldn't even be a possibility, but from memory nothing particularly stands out.

For years now we've been saying we need to recover from the loss of Sir Alex, if nothing else Ole is doing that. and then some. I believe it is shrewd and wise to wait until the summer before announcing anything, it gives Ole more time to grow in to the role with less (and its all relative) pressure.

Gary Nev said there's only three questions that need asking. Well there is a fourth, and that's the DoF. The club needs somebody that can support Ole, if the club get that right (Edwin van der Sar would be my choice) I believe there is a very bright and exciting future ahead of us all.

Good post Tim with which I agree with most if not all the points.
Recently Schmeichal has raised his hand to be the DOF. I would be against that as I think EvdS is more suited. Not really a person who draws controversy and attention, he would be a good fit and would know the DNA of the club. He would work well with OGS I feel. Kasper would be too imposing in opinion and I see him to be a little Woody-like.
Just my humble opinion.
Looking forward to the game later. Best opportunity to level 3rd but trailing only by goal difference. All the way Man Utd!

Good post Timbo, it remains to be seen if he can continue to motivate and inspire if he is given the job full time but he certainly deserves a chance.

With good results comes expectation and having to deliver is significantly harder to what he's doing at the moment when the only real pressure is that he's put upon himself.

He'll soon find people won't be as forgiving when he's expected to challenge for the title and every game and performance matters.

Next season will be completely different but he's earned his chance and there are no guarantees; Mr Mourinho has taught us that.

If you haven't seen it yet, on the club website, Fletch has an account of the 4-2 win at Highbury, the one where Keane and Vieira went at it in the tunnel. Fletch really gets into the mindset of a player in a game of such magnitude. He was such a dedicated player for the club.
His insight into what motivates a team player was very inspiring. Well worth a read before the match later.

It's good isn't it. This fixture thrown up some incredible battles in the EPL years. Last year was one of my favourite games of the mourinho era.

It's a massive game. There will be many twists and turns to come yet, but winning tomorrow will be a big statement from either team. I hope the squad take some of that Keano spirit into the game tomorrow and look to dominate their opposite number.
