Great game by Ben Foster tonight as Liverpool keep with the rebuilding
If he keeps playing like that then he musy be challenging for an England place ahead of Hart.

LOL, how on earth could the referee give that penalty? He couldn't wait to give it could he? Justice in the end. Is there a bigger cheat in the game than Suarez? I only turned over for 10 minutes and he dived twice in that time and appealed for a handball that never was.

Good evening Guys

What a great weekend. The thought of us winning the league against City or even them forming a guard of honour is really getting the juices flowing.
I really hope we don't slip up this season. If we can get past Real Madrid I think there is a possibility of repeating the feat of 1999.
Looking at the Real game Ronnie really could be the difference. If we can keep him quiet for 180 minutes plus Fergie time we have a great chance of winning.

I must say chaps, I'm nervous about the Madrid game already. I hope we can play well defensively and be strong as a unit and maybe snatch a goal. I'd be happy with a draw or losing by the odd goal. We cannot lose the tie in the first game.
What I took from SAF's after match interview was as much as he wants another CL trophy, he wants the PL more and was willing to sacrifice a few players to get the win against Everton, it was a strange interview as usually SAF doesn't give anything away.

Dishforth Red

Believable5 Unbelievable0

I actually believe he was always going to play a strong side but wanted to keep Moyes in the dark. IMO he justified it after the game just to make it more believable.

I don't see why he would play a stronger side just because City lost? Surely if they won and closed the gap to 6 points that would have moreso merited a strong lineup?

I think we will play as strong a lineup as possible on Wednesday but I still expect a surprise or 2 in terms of who starts. I have a sneaky feeling that both Hernandez and Welbeck will play their part over the 2 legs.

Gav

Yeah see what you mean Gav. I thought all along that Hernandez will play. The fact that Ramos mentions him in his interview would suggest he has the pace to make them worry.

Rafael is playing extremely well for us now.
If Fabio has a solid season from now to May he
be trusted more to cover for Evra. let's face it Evra
has had a great season so far even scoring a few goals.
All down to bringing in competition. I've a feeling one of
Buttner & Fabio will be loaned next season. Fabio was at
the time the better prospect of the DaSilva twins. Captain
Of the U18's Brazil. He was a free-kick & penalty specialist.
If & when he replaces Evra at LB could he bang in some pens,
long range shots & free-kicks like DENNIS IRWIN or CLAYTON
BLACKMORE? let's hope so.

TJ

Believable12 Unbelievable1

Or Baines.

Caolán.

Agree1 Disagree3

Or have faith in Fabio? Clearly, the midfield should be our main priority. To be fair, Evra has been more than decent this season, and with Buttner, Fabio returning from loan and Tyler Blackett, I would say we are stacked up at lb. We should be looking for a new winger and a central midfielder.

ZigZag

Agree1 Disagree0

If Fabio can play the type of pass Raphael played against Everton to set up the rvp goal, then there is no harm in experimenting with him in midfield as and when required, but I don't think he will make the Lb his position. Baines will be the best option.
Nomidfield

Agree0 Disagree0

Fabio could stay out on loan another season easily, and I believe that's the likely plan. He's still young for a defender, can get PL experience, and Evra seems to have had a resurrection to his career this season. Buttner is likely seen as a career backup (unless he surprises) first for Evra, and in a few years for Fabio (still only like 23-24) when he's ready to take over as our starting LB. Imagine Rafael continuing to improve (and go forward more, please!) and a copy, or an almost as good copy, on the other side! Two great attacking fullbacks! Gives us guaranteed width for the next decade or so. Can't wait. And yes, I may be optimistic, but that doesn't make me wrong. -KG

Morning Gents,

Well another good weekend for the team. I think some people need to realise that at this time in the season, performances take a back seat to results. We all want to be entertained but quite frankly, more then anything, I want United to win the title back and if it means sacrificing performances for results then I'll accept that.

Having said that, I thought yesterday we played well, Everton are a well organised team with players who will cause a problem but I thought we handled their threats well. They may of had more possession which in the past would of been unheard of at Old Trafford for an away team but to be honest, I can't remember to many squeaky bum moments in the game.

Jones done a workman like job on Felliani and you could see Fellaini was getting frustrated, Vidic looked his dominating self in the air and handled all crosses and long balls in his direction and showed a captains desire when he charged down a shot in the penalty box.

Rooney had a 90% pass completion and work rate especially down the left hand side in the second half when Phil Nev went on a couple of runs summed up his performance and what he brings to the team, how people can criticise him baffles me.

Rafael is just getting better each time I see him play, and as for Ryan Giggs, well people can knock him but he still can do a job when asked. He will never be a regular anymore but still great to have at the club, really chuffed he scored in his 23rd I believe, season running.

Personally, yesterday showed me why I don't want Baines as our left back, yes he is a threat going forward but defensively I think he can be found wanting. This was where we were getting some success and people come on here saying Young does Evra's defensive duties getting him out of trouble, well Moyes had to move Pienaar back to left after 15 minutes to help Baines and even then we still had success and on more than a few occasions, Jagielka had to come across and clean up.

As for Southampton, well I'm glad we've played them twice already, I thought/hoped they may get a draw against City but to win was fantastic, people say Anderson loves a KFC, well I reckon Yaya visited a few fast food chains whilst on International duty!

As for Wednesday, an away goal and within a goal of Madrid will put us in a strong position, cannot wait for it.

Sky and Mourinho have described this game perfectly, this is the game the World is waiting to see, something City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool will never be involved in!

I'm now expecting a borefest 0-0 game : )

Ports

Believable15 Unbelievable4

Great post Ports.

You have summed up the game yesterday perfectly.

It was not great match to watch to be honest but we were solid and professional, we got the job done, recently v southampton and fulham we have done enough to win the game something that city are failing to do.
RVP stated a few weeks ago that he is surrounded by champions, we know how to win - simple as.

12 points clear is huge, we could go 15 points clear by the time city play chelsea : 0, both teams still have a few tough fixtures so can't count our chickens just yet but I cannot see us dropping that amount of points, SAF knew how important yesterday was hence putting out the first team.

Real Madrid on wednesday will be an epic battle I just hope we give a good account of ourselves.

Sydney!

Agree1 Disagree9

1- United had more possession.
2- You can't criticisise Baines for yesterday's performance. Even an off form Valencia is very important to the team. Him and Rafael completely shut off argubly the most dangerous left side in the premier league, while it was impossible for Baines to mark both Rafel and Valencia out of the game. They play really well together ad there is a lot of interchanging on our right hand side.

Apart from that it I agree with everything you said. Great performance

Mick, it's just a personal opinion on Baines, I think some people are blindered by Baines's attacking influence and don't see his defensive weaknesses. I see the same problems in Baines as what people criticise Evra for. I thought yesterday highlighted Baines's weaknesses, had it of been Evra then he'd of been slated. I appreciate Valencia and Rafael are a great partnership but that doesn't mean Baines's defensive positioning was good and he needed Jagielka and Pienaar to help him out. Personally I'd prefer a LB who is happy to go 1 on 1 with the winger and let the LM push the oppositions RB backwards, I hate to admit it but Ashley Cole of old was great at this.

Ports

Fergie has compared our forwards to the class of 99, what's everyones thoughts and does anyone out there realistically believe we can emulate 1999 with this current team

Believable5 Unbelievable1

I don't believe so with this current team when you look back at that team we had the finest quality throughout the whole team and for me that midfield was the strongest in the world! I don't think it would take much to get us to the next level but we're just a little short! let's face it we've all been waiting, wanting, dreaming about getting a midfield that would be comparable to that one, we really were spoilt back then but in my opinion it is the only think lacking that would transform us from a very good side into a great one!

Jamal

p. s I'm not knocking our current squad they have done fantastically well up to this point, just would like a little more quality in midfield!

I think we'll see our tried and tested 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 against Madrid. Usual defense, Vidic and Evans in the center with Rafael and Evra as our full backs. Valencia and Young on the wings with Carrick and Cleverley in the middle. RVP and Rooney up top. I would like to see Jones in midfield for his physical presence but I think we'll go for the tiny bit of extra experience that Cleverley brings.

I have a feeling the game will be won and lost on the flanks, so i'm expecting Rafael and Young in particular to have busy games. I actually think our tactics will be similar to those for Everton, grab an early goal and sit back to defend. A win would obviously be fantastic but a scoreless or a 1-1 draw going into the second leg would excellent as well, given the tough fixtures Madrid have around that time (Barcelona twice if i'm not mistaken).

So now, thanks to Pogba's latest interview, we know that the return of Scholes was the final nail in the coffin of his departure. Certainly his recent performances have justified his frustration and should have us all regretting the loss. His comments about a lack of players of his type are interesting and true, we all know that.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and with it we could argue that having won nothing since Scholes did return that SAF should have played Pogba more. If we could have seen the net-result of Scholes returning would we have been so welcoming? Many saw it as a step backwards at the time anyhow.

Certainly the whole episode contradicts our age old commitment to a youth-policy, which for me is far more significant than any one player. Maybe if Aguero hadn't netted in the final moments the return of Scholes would have seemed a master-stroke, in which case it arguably was anyway. Or would Pogba have been able to prevent losing a 2 goal league to Everton?

We'll never know. but wouldn't it be amazing if we could wave a wand and see?

My point is not to criticise SAF, he obviously had his reasons for doing what he did. The man would do nothing to intentionally harm the club - he had to see a bigger picture I hope.

However my question is does HE think he cocked up? He's admitted since that (whilst a different situation) kicking Stam out was a mistake. That is notable purely because SAF doesn't often voice regret yet alone admit to a mistake. Nevertheless are the voices inside his head going to repeat themselves over Pogba?

Its not beyond the realms of possibility that we could face Juventus in the CL. The return of Pogba for me would be even more interesting than the return of Ronaldo. It's a toss of the coin for me with United against Madrid, and Juventus firm favourites to beat Celtic.

Whilst we can all agree to move on and forget Pogba, there can be no doubt that his situation was watched very closely by many other youngsters coming through the ranks. That's the bigger issue here.

I hope I'm wrong, however it seems that (without wishing to open a "how much money do we have to spend on players" debate) having money is the biggest threat to a productive and effective youth policy. Look at Chelsea and City. Whilst we are nowhere near there, maybe having the Glazers is the best antidote to that.

We all believe we have some amazing talent coming through. I for one would be very happy if we didn't have enough funds to buy replacements in all the positions we need. I'd be even happier if we decided not to buy when we could afford to - though central midfield remains a total mystery to me. We don't buy and we let Pogba leave.

Football isn't just be about the cheque-book, its a balancing act of buying and growing. Let's just hope that the Pogba scenario has no more significance then we give it credit for.

Timbo

Believable7 Unbelievable13

Geez - how many times.

I would not believe a word Pogba said

Mike

(prob all written by a pr muppet anyway).

Agree2 Disagree3

He was orchestrating a move away from the club four months before Scholes returned. Pogba was always leaving the club. Why can't people just accept that?

Sydney!

Agree6 Disagree3

Timbo,

A well written piece but I personally think no matter what SAF had said or done, Pogba was off because he is to influenced by his agent.

His agent came out in the last week or 2 saying that before Juventus he'd approached Roma and I think Milan about taking Pogba before Juventus came in. How can you keep a player when their agent is more concerned with approaching other clubs then discussing his progression and future status at his current club?

I've noticed Pogba is talking a lot about United recently as well, he's moved get on with it but players realise that the grass is not always greener and although he's getting playing time, lifestyle, facilities, protection from your club is not always as good. It's like splitting with a woman, meeting someone new and still talking about your ex.

If I was Pogba's agent, 1) He'd still be at United but 2) I'd be advising him to get his head down and concentrate on his football and Juventus and if asked about United, NO COMMENT!

I reckon his agent is probably already plotting Pogba's next move as I type!

As for not buying for CM, I think SAF has tried, Sneijder (sorry to mention) but wasn't going to bow to his demands and rightly so, I believe we have approached CM's and will see 1 possibly 2 in the summer and then we did sign Powell, for me, Pogba's replacement. I like Powell and think he is going to be a great United player and next season we will see a lot more of him in the United shirt.

Nice comments from Pettrucci regarding his loan move and he has said 80% of players get a loan move unless you're a Rooney so I think it speaks volumes that SAF has kept Powell at the club and Pogba should have realised that to.

Ports

Agree2 Disagree0

Basically he agreed that he decided it in January (probably he decided even before that), maybe in the next interview he will tell us exactly when he decided and why (how much money).

He can say all he wants to say, now that he has gone. And now after reading all he has been saying for last 6 months, we know what SAF meant when he said "lad showed no respect for the club".

Last yr, He and his agent kept on saying that a decision is yet to be made. I remember, SAF left him to train alone for two and a half weeks (feb last week to march 2nd week) and his agent came out and said that it will be very difficult to stay if the situation remains like this. This after it was decided back in Jan (or even before that).

He is one of the best young talents in the world right now and will probably become one of the best player in the world, but we would do without him. We would rather have someone who want to stay here and who has some respect for the club. This scholes argument is all crap, he made up his mind long back and has made up a story now. And we haven't fared badly, have we. May be it would cost us some money (20-25 mio) to fill his place but that's better for the club. Benoit

Agree1 Disagree1

Can we put this to bed now? I don't know why people keep going on about it.

Pogba is gone, he's moved on, United have moved on. Time you do to.

RedDub

Agree1 Disagree0

I hate the fact Us as supporters still moanin about Pogba.

Come one lads he's gone. Concentrate on what we have.

We're a team in transition but still sitting at the top with 12 points lead. Sir Alex Knows what he's doing, Imagine how good we will be with couple of signings in summer.

Honestly I think we are only lackin around 2 world class signings and we will be sorted for the next few years.

Some one here would say we are about 3/4 world class players away from a special team.

But I think a CM and a LB will be enough for the immediate future, whilst the young ones at the team grow up and become United Quality.

Look at city after spending more then a Billion and they still 12 points behind even though we play a 39 year old giggs.

In Pogbas case if he actually cared he would still be here at Manchester United.

Hes a greedy boy just like many others in the game of football. You really think that if he really wanted to win titles or champions league he would go to juventus?.

Juventus maybe a good team but they are miles away from champions league quality and the only reason they are winning the serie A is because the rest of the team are no where near Juventus quality apart from napoli, which is a one man team due to cavani. Isee pogba staying there for few years and then getting his ass to a new club for more money.

Look we're not controlled by Silly billionaire's. I am glad that we aint, because we will taking things for granted as city players are.

I have so much to say but words not enuf to say how grateful I feel to be a manchester united fan.

We've seen so much success that we would want to win it every year. Not that its wrong but I am satisfied with what we've achieved in recent years apart from losing to barca in the finals twice.

Singh

Agree7 Disagree1

I think his agent has already come out and said he will assess Pogba's situation in the summer?
He is already planning Pogba's next move which will be to one of the big spending clubs where he will be for a season or two before saying its his dream or gods will that he plays for whoever. If he had stayed he could have been quite a destabilising influence at the club.

Supasub

Agree0 Disagree0

And when he leaves juve it will be down to Vidal getting a new contract in the Summer then will come around another big move to city, Chelsea, real etc and him and riola will wheel out the same guff as they are now! Does any1 really believe this move to juve is anymore of a stepping stone to more money down the line soon? Riola deals with pogba, balotelli and ibrahimovic to name a few so he must be a person himself, let's be honest ibrahimovic has moved quite a few times aswell its all money with riola always has been! We are better off rid if him!

Hi Guys

Heres my mid Feb review

12 pts ahead in the league with just under a third of the season left. After last season the cork is still well and truly in the bottle, just hope the momentum stays the same after this weekends cup break. Yesterday was a very professional performance, I thought Vidic was immense not to mention Giggs, and Jones did a good man marking on the dangerous Felliani.

The biggest danger we now face is City can now play without fear, like the last 6 games of last season. In their minds its all over and that is when they are most dangerous. Its a case of just go out and try and win as many games as possible and see where we end up kind of mindset.

By my reckoning we have now got 4 games before the derby. We will beat Reading in the cup so the West Ham away game will be a night game in April. So that leaves us with Norwich and Reading at home and QPR and Sunderland away. Fingers crossed we will still be 10-12 points clear come derby day and we will see what happens then.

I am really looking forward to Wednesday now, 1) Because I am going and 2) I want to see Ronnie playing live again, a serious case of not knowing what you have got until its gone. God he used to infuriate me when he played for us going down all the time outside the box when a promising move was on, to get himself the attention of the free kick, but he was truly magical as well. I know he will get a wonderful reception when he comes to Old Trafford.

So all good at the moment, by the way how frightening did that bench look yesterday. With no injuries we are a match for anyone in this league

Mike the Moston Red

Believable3 Unbelievable1

I disagree, City will now be more nervous knowing that one more loss or draw could be curtains. City will be thinking the gap is 9 points as they would be confident at beating us. If Chelsea take a point or points at City and we beat QPR then the title is all but won IMO.

Then with the title won what kind of team would you think Fergie would put out. Hopefully we'd still be in the Champions League semi final. I'm sure he'd wanna rest Rio, Vidic, Evra, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, RVP.

Arsenal a

Swansea h

Could be an opportunity to try the diamond formation again.

Be good to see some promising players be given a chance.

You are thinking WAY too far ahead.

TJ,

You have just come up with a team for a match in a scenario that probably won't even happen and is jumping the fun massively. We HAVE NOT won anything yet, nobody wins the title in February and the players need to make sure they keep at it. I actually think we could win the league by a record number of points gap but the players must carry on as they are and not think we have won it.

Sorry for ignoring most of your post but to me it means nothing.

Anderson at the base of a midfield diamond? That makes as much sense as Liverpool buying Carrol for 35 mils.

Mick - to be fair - I would rather play Anderson there than pay £35mil for Carrol.

Fergie insisted United won't lose on footy focus. That's why bookies are paying out. Maybe I've jumped the gun a little. I would like to see Powell, Vermijl & W. Keane introduced. Hopefully the last two games if we've clinched the title. Maybe Januzaj 10-15 mins off the bench.
As for Anderson playing the Carrick roll. He's quick, can tackle, can pick the ball up deep, pass short or long & burst past players. He's been tried there a few times. He might be able to last 90 mins in a more deeper roll. Unless we buy a DM I can only see Anderson or Petrucci playing there. Fergie doesn't want an Igor type Cattermole kicker. Carrick, Ando & Petrucci collect from the back & start our attacks.
