Not withstanding what may happen in extra time but Perisic hasn't been fantastic tonight.

Really? He's a very good player, creates chances.

Thought he was their best player. Very dangerous. Alas englad reverted to type tonight playing long balls and panicking. Shame but a great run and a tournament too soon for us. Maybe next time.

The dream is over!

The quality just wasn't there in both boxes tonight. Kane and Lingard missed massive chances. Croatia looked calamitous in the first half but we didn't show enough composure or quality to finish them off.

In our own box Walker then Stones we're guilty of ball watching. They both just didn't see their men. They didn't even look.

Southgate failed to react. The threat was in the wide areas. Lingard and Ali just couldn't cover quick enough. The equaliser was coming. He should have changed and plugged the holes with two wide men. Easy to say in hindsight but the best mangers sense danger, understand the ebb and flow of the game and react. I think he got transfixed with the three at the back and maybe lacked the foresight or tactical nous to change it when needed.

Overall It's been a good tournament. We've played well in spells, with imagination and fluidity without really showing the quality with the final pass or finish. We've at least tried to play the right way and haven't embarrassed ourselves.

It's bitterly disappointing and so frustrating because Croatia aren't that good. We made them look so average in that first half but when the big chances come, especially in knockout football you have to put them away.

I think France will run out comfortable winners on Sunday. Mbappe will absolutely terrify them.

Dejan Lovren will now play in a Champions League and World Cup final. Just let that sink in! Football, bloody hell!

Firstly let's applaud the fact that England did so well and that the players and manager gave their all. Now taking a long hard dispassionate look at the team I think the biggest thing we miss is a top class midfield. We had no one with the ability and knowledge how to dictate the pace of the game and we also lack a creative midfielder too. Modric and Perisic were excellent from half time onwards. Kane had no service and Dele Ali really has not done himself justice in this competition. Henderson is a real tryer but honestly can anyone say he is world class? At the back Trippier had a fabulous World Cup as did Maguire and Pickford. Walker played ok but I do think Stones showed why he is not first choice even at City by his switching off at key moments.

Agree1 Disagree1

12 Jul 2018 07:39:35
Gotta say Hendon I think Stones has had a great World Cup. He and Walker both were guilty of ball watching lqst night but Stones has shown this tournament that he can actually defend. Maguire was the one carrying the ball and Stones was leading the defense. Also if 4 penalties, a fluke and a tap in makes you a top level striker, then I've still got a chance. Kane has been poor since the group games.
Gutted. There will never be a better chance. All the planets alligned. Bring on the prem!

Agree1 Disagree1

12 Jul 2018 08:01:39
Hendonred, what do you class as world clas? Because looking at that england team i don't see 1 world class player, yet you pick out Henderson. He was the natural leader on the pitch and was probably in the top 3 players for England this tournament next to trippier and pickford. I haven't included kane as I don't think his goal tally reflects his performances.

12 Jul 2018 09:21:27
I think Henderson played well but he will never be a great player. I will reserve judgement about Stones as he is young but at this level it's small margins and he switched off at critical times as did Walker. that's why Pep did not trust him last year. I actually think Trippier has been the best right defender/ wingback of the whole tournament. Kane is clearly World Class but he was not his sharpest and it may be that once again not having a mid season break hindered him. Also imagine having Erickson in our team or a De Bruyne to give him the service he needs. He fed off scraps most of the time.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jul 2018 17:00:25
Madmax, putting United and liverpool rivalaries aside, are you serioysly telling us that Henderson was in top 3 players for England? He, and the rest of our midfield were shown to be exactly what i thought, total rubbish and overrated. Modric and Racitic rang rings around us. And Henderson kept passing the ball back or hoofing it up front with no idea. It was utter crap.

Should have played the couple of million extra for perisic. Big, strong quick and direct. Can put a ball in. Been the best player on the pitch.

1 game park, 1 good game doesn't make an average player great. If we are going to judge players by 1 game, lukaku needs to be sold and city should get rid of debruyne and that little Argentine that Barcelona pay so much money to he needs to be gotten rid of too.

Modric ran the show. Croatia were more clever and experienced where we were trying to go forward too quickly. Could have been won in the 1st half. Croatia got away with being more physical.

11 Jul 2018 22:02:34
Not judging on one game csm. Seen him play for inter this season and he was very good in the first half of the season. I’m a fan of his personally. All about opinions. Never said that a player should be judged on one game. I’m usually careful not to jump on the match of the day fever regarding a player during the World Cup.

Supasub you are spot on about Modric. He was amazing again today. Best midfielder in the world for me. Would still love to sign him even though he is 32.

Agree0 Disagree1

11 Jul 2018 22:17:08
What happened in the 2nd half of the season, martial got nos similar to him in less than half the minutes and playing in a tougher league. He is and always will be a average hard working player, not utd quality.

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Jul 2018 22:17:54
It might have been a different game if the ref had issued a few yellow cards early in the game when England were on top. Lovren might have had 2. Given that this was the ref who sent Nani off in our match against Real Madrid, it does tend to make one feel he doesn't like English teams. This may seem like sour grapes but I think it makes a real difference when every move is stopped through professional fouls that do not receive an automatic yellow.

That said, in the end we didn't deserve the win. It seemed like we were starting every attack through Pickford. The intention might have been to spread the other team out but the result was that there was no speed in the attack and the defenders had plenty time to get organized. Add to that a performance by Kane that was the antithesis of what you want from your captain.

i saw him at the san siro in may and he was crap.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jul 2018 22:29:32
Csm by that logic what happened to martial second half of the season? His numbers were crap so does that make him not good enough for us either? and of course your going to point towards sanchez’s Arrival. But if martial had the mentality to be a top player he would have taken sanchez’s arrival as a challenge and would have worked his arse off to get his spot back. To say perisic is an average player is pure snobbery. The guy is playing in a World Cup final so he must have some talent. Not saying we should sign him now as we are well stocked in the left wing position with Sanchez now here. But I would have been happy to see us pay what was needed for perisic at the beginning of last season.

Agree0 Disagree1

12 Jul 2018 02:30:31
Park he is playing world cup final means his team has been great, it doesn't mean he turns into a great player. Lovren and rebic also play in the same team are they now also world-class since they are playing in a team that has made it to a world cup final.

Agree1 Disagree2

12 Jul 2018 10:31:44
Its a team game. Maybe you should give credit to Modric and the rest of the team as to why they are in the final.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jul 2018 11:02:58
Of course it’s a team game Singh. As I’ve said above Modric is the best midfielder in the world. I don’t see why it’s hard for people to give credit to perisic. He changed the game for Croatia and was the attacking outlet for them yesterday. All that was good can through him. But because his name is not Gareth bale he is average and not good enough. I seem to remember CSM calling him the Croatian Ashley young when we were linked with him previously. Football snobbery tbh.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jul 2018 12:16:28
It's not snobbery park, just look at most of his crosses and Young's, they both rarely get to the player they are supposed to. Both are capable of odd good games but reliable and consistent are words neither can ever be associated with and neither will ever be considered anything other than average players.

Well, I told you guys Croatia was going to win and it could have been worse for you if they didn't went to extra time in their last 2 games, they do have a proper midfield, you dont.

But Southgate is the right manager for you, you just need 2 or 3 more creative players, Lingard, Alli and Sterling aren't good enough IMO you have a bright future though. Soughtgare has the right idea but don't have the players just yet, walker, lingard, alli, rashford and sterling aren't good enough but i believe you will produce good talent for the next world cup, i can see you reaching the final in Qatar and maybe in 2026.

New image uploaded to the
Manchester United Player Sightings page entitled, Pogba was very good last season statistically

Believable0 Unbelievable0

It's a weird one that he came under so much scrutiny for the past season. Started off in fantastic form, then he got injured and the results dipped concurrently. He came back from his injury and carried on from where he left off, games against Newcastle, Watford and Arsenal were some of our best. Got suspended and again the team's overall play stalled. Came back from the suspension and played well yet again (Results weren't great but they were due to other absolute clangers, Smalling staying on injured against Leicester and letting his man score, Jose playing Zlatan at 10 vs Burnley and then he never played again) . His season flipped completely after the Tottenham game in my opinion, absolute terrible performance all round, yet he took the brunt of it. From the outside it seemed him and Jose's relationship was deteriorating. After that the exuberance and flair to his game (his best quality) was diminished barring a few good performances on the run in. Maybe I'm making stuff up but it looked like he had lost his motivation and that was due to his fractured relationship with Jose. I don't blame him either he was used as a scapegoat and sidelined, when he's our most important player.

Pogba is a marked man within the punditry circles. He plays for United, at the time it was a world record fee and he dyes his hair. The three things the old guard can't get their head around! He does things that I'm sure infuriate us all but he's still a class act and will only improve.

The media have these preconceived notions that they tend to rattle off during most games that don't hold up well when scrutinised.

Pogba isn't worth £89 million. Two years ago it was a world record fee. Now you have players like Dembele and Coutinho going for north of £130 million. £89 million doesn't look too shabby.

The main part of his game he needs to improve on is the simple things. He can ping a ball 40 yards, dribble by 2 or 3 defenders, get stuck into a tackle but it's his 10 yard pass that will go astray. Cut out the unnecessary flicks and improve his concentration and there's a world class midfielder in there.

Anyone who watches us every week will see how good he is. It's the pundits that have it in for him.

Agree2 Disagree1

11 Jul 2018 18:11:10
He’s a y player but as Mumbles says he can be careless with the simple things. The fact we have been offering him to other clubs is worrying. Either he has a bad attitude or Jose isn’t interested in getting the best out of him. He’s looked great for France, how do we get him to move up to that very top level that we know he is capable of?

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Jul 2018 21:54:04
Shearer said exactly what the issue is and this relates to all the players. For France Pogba is playing really well but he has made the odd mistake when trying to make things happen, but he is not getting slated by the manager (which JM does) he is therefore more relaxed and that is showing in his play.

Impressed by Pogbas performance and also that last night he dedicated the win to the schoolkids trapped in the cave in Thailand, saying they were the bravest.

Tomorrow the backpages will no doubt have the word hero splashed on them because tonight someone scores a goal or saves a penalty - I get that, got plenty of my own.

But in the modern world the word hero is bandied about to easily, imagine volunteering to go into a cave where 95% of the worlds divers wouldn't even attempt to go and pull out 13 people over 10 days. no one knows their names or faces really, and we won't hear of them again until the next such emergency. The real deal right there.

Looking forward to tonight and just hope we turn up. It’s funny what a big game can do to players. Last night, KDB was dreadful, he’s a fabulous player but when his team needed him he had an off day. Lukaku hardly touched the ball, we can blame his team but we also saw this at United. Perhaps they didn’t play to his strengths but he was never in the game.

Pogba has stepped up, real discipline and application, he’s had a really good tournament. I once said I wasn’t convinced about Mbappe, how wrong was I? He is scary, his pace is key but he also has tricks and a football brain beyond his years.

Tonight is about turning up. Kane has been sluggish lately and we need to get him into the game. If we play well, then I think we will win. Come on England!

Believable7 Unbelievable1

11 Jul 2018 07:54:58
Agree with you 100% that KDB was shocking. I felt they were missing Munier as their buikd up and attack seemed so slow. Dembele was a donkey too, don't see why some are in love with him.

Didn't understand why he took Fellaini off to bring on another wide crosser. Felt like he had lists of crossers of a ball but looked more likely to score with Lukaku and Fellaini on the pitch.

Variance and Umtiti look very good together though.
