Ive seen a lot of posts attributing yesterdays game as just one of those days which is true as we have been on an amazing run under ole.

But yesterday did expose that our style of play is still quite limited. We have been excellent at defending in a low block and counter attacking with ruthlessness and incision.

Once arsenal got the first goal, unfortunate mistake by de gea then the onus was on us to take the game to arsenal and we struggled to break down arsenal when they went into their own low block.

Our build up from the back is poor, de gea has regressed with the ball at his feet, young gives the ball away too much and smalling is a liability with the ball at his feet. Matic also dawdles too much when in possession. Further forwards fred and lukaku are unsure of their first touch which means we can't sustain pressurised attacks.

Ole has done wonders with the belief and confidence of this squad but there are still underlying issues of quality which we are lacking. I just hope ole and the staff aren't too nice and are ruthless enough to shape this squad in the future.

DSG, Ole can only use the players we have available. Unfortunately we don't have the kind of forwards or creative midfielders to break down teams that sit deep.

Ole has also got our defence playing a higher line now than they did under Mourinho. That higher line has allowed us to turn over possession quicker and the players are encouraged to play the ball forward as quickly and as often as possible.

So although it is a counter attacking style, it isn't one in which we invite teams on to us but rather one where we go after the opposition.

The squad still needs work, beyond the first 11 the drop off in quality is too much. Also having had several managers over a short space of time there are players in the squad who don't suit the style Ole wants to play.

The summer will be pivotal, we need 3 or 4 top level signings who can go straight into the first 11 or at least seriously challenge it, while 6-8 players need to move on, with a couple of kids coming through.

Still don't understand why we sold daley blind, him and lindelof could have done a good job together at centre back till the end of the season until we bought an upgrade.

I agree, selling Blind was a mistake. I really rate him as a squad player. He would offer us a good ball playing CB, or a solid DM cover for Matic, plus cover for LB.

Very few players are that versatile.

He would have also allowed us to seemlessly play a three at the back system that could have been very good.

Some players are limited not just style of play. The players have been doing great but will come unstuck from time to time because they are not as good as the run of results suggests.
We need a few new players to complete at the top table.

DDG saves a speculative shot. Ref waves off an iffy pen. Lukaku buries a couple of his sitters and we're rolling home with a 2 Nil away win.

I know it's all Ifs and Buts. But my point is that we didn't lose the balance of play in the game. We lost a few key moments by fine margins. That's football. But don't over analyze it and make out that Ole's tactics are now floored.

We will not win every game. Get over the losses, learn from the moments we could have done better and move on. Biggest lesson for me is the lack of intensity from the start.

Disagree with DSG. Arsenal struggled to contain us whenever we had a go at them.
We were just not clinical as we have been for the past 20 odd games.

Sure we lost a game. We were bound to but I agree with a couple of posters that I'd rather we lose fighting with no luck scoring than we were before parking the bus. So I am disappointed but not overly sad. Would've been nice to win but I'm not going to blame anyone.
I did say in the chat that Fred should've been substituted but feel he played very well in 2nd half but not so much the 1st. For me on the whole the team played good but we did make some mistakes. It gives me confidence that we have the foundation for next season but with a few additions.
For now we just need to pick ourselves up after this fall. Gunners played well but I still feel we were a bit unlucky with the misses and twice hitting the posts. Look forward to the FA Cup now.

I agree. Simply wasn't our day. The best of teams with the best backroom staff still have off days. We hit the woodwork twice, Leno made great and brave saves, we conceded a freakish goal with a soft penalty. No blame on anyone, we look at next game and we make it ours!

If we had played a lesser team who weren't as up for it as Arsenal were we would get a win 8 times out of 10 with that kind of performance.

However, we looked like we couldn't play more than at around 80% of our potential and we never got out of 3rd gear. Whereas, Arsenal played with a fighting spirit not seen since the days of Viera, Keown and Adams etc.

I thought Fred was decent, probably our best midfielder on the day. He still has a way to go yet, but I thought he showed promise.

A mistake from the one player who never makes mistakes, and who probably has the most credit in his account over the last five years.

Time to move on, we have a tough game against Wolves on Saturday to look forward to. More importantly for the squad 5 days to prepare for it. So we should be chomping at the bit and well prepared for Saturday.

Personally although I know we can lose to anyone at any time, which of course is the beauty of the EPL, I only seeing us struggle to get a result against Man City of our remaining EPL fixtures. So I am pretty confident we will still make top four.

Sunday's game was in my opinion just one of those games. We tried hard, but the players looked slightly jaded. Matic was clearly a little rusty. I think the tactic's were quite right, and we might have got a little more from the game if we set up slightly differently. Maybe McTominay should have kept his place with Matic coming on in the second half maybe.

That said, if we are to lose I would rather lose like that than by parking the bus. We had 14 shots away to Arsenal when not playing particularly well. The problem was Leno only had to make 4 saves. We hit the post twice, and although the penalty was a penalty it was about as soft as you could get without it being incorrectly given.

There are positives to take from the game. Firstly and most importantly I think was the EPL debut of Mason Greenwood. He might not have had a huge amount of time to impress yet in that time he showed great maturity to not let the occasion get to him. He looked positive and not overawed at all. For me he is the mostly likely of the trio (Chong, Gomes and Greenwood) to make it at the club. Chong looks like he is a year or two away from really being able to push for a first team spot, I think he could do with a good loan next season. Gomes has the ability, he is just waiting for his body to mature enough to be physically able to push on. A bit like Scholes being clearly the most talented of the class of 92, yet he didn't get his chance until a little later than the others due to his small frame.

Also I thought Fred was quietly very good again. Covered lots of ground, made several important tackles, disrupted Arsenal's rhythm well. While also making a couple of good contributions going forward, hitting the post and creating a couple of goal scoring chances. I think his performances over the last couple of games gives confidence that he can really kick on next season.

The race for top four will as Ole has suggested really go down to the wire. Some people have tried to look at the fixture list and work out who has the easier run etc. Personally I don't think that matters as much as the confidence, mentality and the momentum each club has going in to the final stretch. That is why I am still confident that we can do it.

Spurs under Pochettino have yet to show the mental resilience to hack a real fight when the pressure builds. Both Emery and Sarri are new to the league and have shown naivety on occasion. Personally I think all three of them will lose or draw games they will be expected to win between now and the end of the season. Four teams for two places, yet even after yesterday's result we are still the in form team, with the momentum and the confidence. If Ole can bring the team back from losing 2-0 at home to PSG then I am confident he will get a response after losing 2-0 away to Arsenal.

Scholes was playing, relatively regularly, for the first team the same season as Neville and Butt, and a year before Beckham. He was top class, so it didn’t matter about his small frame.

Butt made his debut two years before Scholes. Scholes was often taken off early or used as a sub in his first season or two, plus he was played out of position for the first 3-4 years while he adjusted to the pace and power of the EPL. Often deployed in the No.10 or as a false 9 on occasions as it was thought the battle of midfield was too tough for him at that time.

However, it is clear his talent along with his fighting spirit won out and he was able to force his way into midfield.

Gomes makes Scholes look like a giant. Scholes is 5'7, whereas Gomes is still only 5'3. For comparison Messi (after his growth hormones) is 5'7.

Gomes height shouldn't hold him back too much, however, he will need to fill out before he can be thrown in to being tackled by players such as Maguire and van Dijk.

Butt made three appearances before the 94-95 season when Scholes, Neville and Butt all became first team regulars. Scholes was primarily played as an understudy to Cantona because we were overstocked in midfield.

Do you know Scholes scored in the League in 19 consecutive seasons, a record only beaten by Giggs who did it in 23 consecutive seasons.
