I'm going to get a few dislikes for this but here goes. Is Martial just not as good as we all want him to be? He has a purple patch and looks the real deal then has an absolute stinker. When he goes missing it's like playing with 10 men.
I get that our system isn't probably suited to his style with the laboured passing in the middle but when he's off form he's useless.
I would love to see a front 3 of Martial, Rashford plus an out and out goal scorer, someone like Icardi. But I think the most we can ask of Martial is around about the 10 goals a season mark.

He could be a good player if he ever got his head up. Constantly dribbling directly into traffic, not seeing an easy pass. Was screaming at him to square it to rashford for a tap in when he was through today, he was so lucky the tackle was mistimed and we ended up scoring. Must be so frustrating to play with.

He obviously has areas to improve but there is a lot there to work with in martial. Good dribbler, excellent finisher, poor off ball movement however.

Two things that could help us improve attacking wise are:

1.) using the whole bloody football pitch, the percentage of attacks concentrated on our left hand side is so predictable. So easy for defenders to compensate and overload that side in the knowledge that if we switch it there is no one on the right hand side to do anything with it.

2.) building up play from the back. As much as counter ataltacking and knocking balls info the channel is exciting and effect when done well, it is easy to prepare for and we are eventually going to have to starting progressing play from our defence.

14 Apr 2019 01:22:21
My biggest frustration is his lack of poacher instinct when the ball comes in from the opposite wing. Sterling and Aguero score a crazy number of taps ins just by committing to the back post with pace and I feel Martial could benefit from adding this to his game. He has a lot to work with, feels like he needs a fire lighting under him to get him going!

Dsg good post.
We won't win enough games without control of the play.
Our team due to injuries and required rotation is all over the place at the moment so we just have to grin and bear it. Some think ole is a yes man, i believe he has a vision of how he wants to play and who what type of players he needs to create that.
He can motivate the players. i'm hoping for a big clear out and for ole to get the best out of our best players but our best players need to be complimented with players that allow them to shine.
If we had much more possession maybe martial will shine.
If we play from the back through midfield maybe pogba would shine every week.
I think ole will try to sign young players maybe 1 or 2 snr high quality players if we move sanchez herrera and mata on that's a lot of experience.

Martial needs to improve his decision making. He also needs to be bursting his gut to get into the box at every opportunity.

But yesterday, it was Rojo playing full back who cannot make overlapping runs. Because of this, Martial was getting outnumbered every time he got into the box.

14 Apr 2019 08:53:45
Harsh reality is Martial was up against an ageing zabaleta at the end of his career and was barely doing do anything.

A young pacy player should have been giving Zabaleta nightmares instead it was an easy game for him. he's too inconsistent and doesn't show the desire when he loses it for me.

On top of that you add headless chicken Jesse on the other side who runs and does nothing else I think the club need 2 wingers in the summer to increase competition as well as quality.

Agree2 Disagree1

14 Apr 2019 09:36:23
I think Martial is just lazy to be honest. Quality at times but no consistency, maybe he will develop still but we need hard workers and consistency now.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Apr 2019 10:15:52
I see Martial as a young Nani. Has all the potential but inconsistent and lacks awareness. But on the bright side he is young and can add this to he's game by playing regularly.

I know ED02 has mentioned that he is not aware of any approach to WHU about Rice from us but I think he would be a great signing. He was everywhere for WH today.
Covering the back 4 and attacking and looked a yard faster than some of our players at times. If Ole is really looking for a strong core of young English players than surely Rice should be one of the names added to our summer plans.

Rice and mctom? I don't think we need both.

Rice and Jones in the first team, we wouldn't sell many team calendars.

Agree with these comments, mctomm is getting better and better. Rice may have a higher ceiling, but the two would be pretty limiting playing together.

Ed can you run a poll please.?
If we make no signings and retain all the players in the squad as it is now for next seasons campaign do posters think
A) think we can challege to win the league?
B) would qualify for cl by being top 4.

Prob slightly better than that mort but only slightly.

Interesting. I predict top 4.

And then I remembered who we have in defence.

No and No.

With no top quality CB and RB we can’t get top 4.

You have to imagine Liverpool, city, Spurs, Chelsea and arsenal all strengthen. There's 5. Leaves us 6th at best. But I'd also keep an eye on Wolves and Leicester, we stand still and there poised.

Every department we have issues.
Keepers: De Gea could go.
Defence: We need a right back and 1-2 centrebacks and cover at left back.
Midfield: We need two signings anyway with Herrera leaving. Add to that the long term Matic replacement and the Pogba conundrum: Stick or twist.
Wingers: Well we have none. Mata and lingard better central and Mata is off. Martial is too lazy to be out wide and would be better upfront. Sanchez less said the better.
Strikers: Is a mixed bag. But not as bad as the rest.

It will take 2-3 summers to sort this mess.

If your not moving forward you will go backwards .
We are a far better team than many make out but we are not as good as an excellent city team .

85% on here think otherwise. i'm with the realists.
But we live in hope that ole will have the backing and authority to clear out the overpaid poor players.

Truthfully, we may end up a . I'd table team if were not careful.

Every summer we all become hopeful over a squad overhaul etc. Its been too long. Still slot of deadwood remains.

Being a monkey, I voted to be challenging so this whole thing is void. 80% vote doesn't meant nowt ;) . I think we should have a rerun until we get the optimistic vote I so hope for. Isn't that how it works now?!

Ken, Ed 2 has already said ole has limited authority when it comes to incoming and outgoing players. We will be left with a mediocre manager with potential, and whatever players woody deems appropriate. And imo its unlikely that combination leads to a title winning performance.

Agree0 Disagree2

14 Apr 2019 09:46:31
I agree Ken with that. How long have we been saying this? Too many poor overpaid players. Mediocre a lot of them and that is not the way we will move forward.

OGS got an incredible bounce but we are starting to see the glaring deficiencies once again in this squad. Not OGS fault at all. But he won't have any input into picking players and I highly doubt that ed or the board will have the necessary tools required to sign the correct players.

It's evident because according to ed002, the majority of their shortlist is still that of Jose's shortlist. Woodward is clueless and because of that I highly doubt we will move forward in the right fashion.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Apr 2019 13:06:43
I think our biggest issues right now is we do not have someone to dictate play. We have plenty going forward we have enough in defense if we could just get a player in midfield who would sit in front of our defense break up the other teams play and then break when we can but also hold the ball when we need a rest or nothing is on.

Pogba could do it the problem is he does not want to Matic is not good enough and Fred and Mctominay are not experienced enough yet in this league.

Theres a lack of that type of player around at the moment in my opinion. Its probably why you see more teams get their creativity or urgency from their full backs. Look at liverpool with alexander arnold or robertson. Spurs with their full backs.

City obviously have fernandinho but they also player with two super creative midifleder in the silvas or kdb.

Being linked with saul, bruno fernandes won't solve this as they are more advanced midfielders. The link with rice is also worrying as he is definitely limited in posession.

Veratti is the best at this but can't see us getting him from PSG.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Apr 2019 17:21:59
We have a player who cost 90 million who should be doing that.

Agree2 Disagree0

14 Apr 2019 09:24:16
I think munier could be a solution to this problem. He is very good defensively, is a good ball player and has looked solid whenever played centrally. With the links with him and wan bissaka it could be a great decision to sign both and wouldn't destroy our budget for the summer. Best case munier is strong in the centre, worst case we have 2 obvious improvements on our rb position allowing dalot to play further forward and young to back up shaw.

Been a long time reader to this site probably getting on 10 years always loved reading everyone's different opinions love United for as long as I can remember few things:

1. pogba is a good player could be great and this might split few decisions he needs to be sold when a player wants to move to another team and tbh he's not tried to hide it which frankly to me is completely unprofessional turns up in certain games and completely anonymous in others

2. someone needs to tell rashford to just shoot from inside the area in training no clinicalness in him at the moment what so ever got everything else in the locker apart from the most important thing martial lazy it's like most of are players are half arsed sorry for language but it's not right guys I'm a hard working average person not someone on thousands of pounds a week we used to have players that wanted glory with the mighty reds and that's why we so successfull cause of them players we don't have that now.

We have a lot of players who need to be more aggressive. I don't mean jumping into knee high tackles (bring back to golden years of tackling! ) but simply to being aggressive in movement, decision making, off ball running, going and getting the ball, passing forward. Supporting the play.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Apr 2019 08:13:14
1.) i haven't seen pogba come out and say he wants to leave or push for a move yet. He hasn't been unprofessional and it might just be form which means he is better in some games than others, you know like every player who has plued the game.

2.) if rashford stuck to only shooting from inside the box we probably would not have got through against paris. Its clear he has very good ball striking ability, he just needs to hone it and that will mean some pretty poor attempts on matchdays.

Agree1 Disagree1

14 Apr 2019 01:17:55
Dsg. That's a good post on rashford. He is young his decision making is still questionable to say the least but iut will get better. He has a great attitude he works hard keeps a reasonably low profile in fact in these days a very low profile.
What i like to see most in any player is a desire to succeed and to try as hard as possible and to go out of their way to make something happen even if its not going their way.
I see that in rashford.
He has every chance and i think he wants to improve i'm sure he knows he has to.
