Well guys, we rode our luck at times this evening and should have even nicked it. Got to take 1-1 as a good result going back to OT. Just posting to say how pleased I was that De Gea played so well and maybe all the people who know nothing about goalkeeping and slag him off can now get behind the lad and help him become one of the worlds best. Also, as regular posters will know I don't think Welbeck is good enough to be a united striker but can I say that he was very very good tonight. I don't think he will ever be good enough as an out and out striker but maybe he should continue to be played out wide as he seems much more effective this way.

Cant wait for the 2nd leg now.

Danny welbeck was awesome shame he looked like he picked up a knock. Old Trafford will be buzzing can't wait. Ronaldo was brilliant and he showed us a great deal of respect without celebrating!

would like to say a big well done to the team tonight, almost a perfect away performance if van persie had tucked away that chance. thought the spine of the team were brill tonight. De gea, rio, evans, jones, carrick, welbeck and v persie were immense.

v persie when touched the ball oozed class, welbeck was a constant threat to madrid defence and offers us something different with his pace and power. carrick seamed really assured on the ball and belongs playing at the highest stage.

cant wait till the return leg now, let's get right behind the lads and make real wish they had never set foot inside old trafford

Not going to say too much, but I have to say that the team were brilliant - in particular Jones, DDG, Welbeck and Carrick. All of the aforementioned were fantastic (as were most of the team). Hopefully De Gea can kick on from this performance. The biggest thing is that Jones has probably saved us a bag load of cash, he is the ideal enforcer. We don't need one in every game, but when we do need an enforcer he is the man. We can now go on to look for a creative central player perhaps like Wilshere/Eriksen, a wide man to replace Nani and perhaps a left back.

Fresh!

Believable11 Unbelievable0

Ronaldo, Wilshere and Baines will do.

FHS

Agree7 Disagree0

And also to mention, fantastic performance from the lads. Real character. Am I the only one slightly gutted we didn't win the game with the chances we had? I know they did too but I suppose that shows how well we did if we can come away with a 1-1 draw there and feel we could've had more.

Won't say too much on it as it has already been said but an excellent performance by De Gea. This kind of game suited him but was so pleased for him. I always want United players to succeed, always, but never more so than with him. He will still make mistakes and you cannot expect him to perform perfectly from now on but it is a good start. He is still 22. But this is his moment, let him enjoy it.

You think this was a big game? Well the next one will be even bigger. It will be horrendously nerve wracking I'll be s***ting myself but let us not forget, they will fear us too. And I cannot wait.

Enjoy the night lads.

I've seen a few higlights over the past couple years of Ronaldo scoring goals like he did tonight. Switching sides and having a deep cross and him finishing them off. surely this is a tactic we should have known about and defended better. I'm not taking anything away from the goal, just think its something we could have done a little better on.
CDS

Jono, like you, I still have reservations about DDG's physicality and his dealing with crosses.

But that save against Coentrao is what separates the top keepers from the average ones. To react that quickly, unsighted through a sea of bodies, displays agility and reactions of the very highest order.

Even with his faults, the young lad will win us a lot more points than he'll cost us.

Does anyone else think Rooney played quite badly tonight. I can't remember him giving the Real defense any problems or even a shot. He gave the ball away countless amount of times and didn't create anything. I was very happy to see him come off. Decent performance ( I was a little bit worried before the game). De Gea had a lot to do today and made some crucial saves. I felt Raphael was almost trying too hars in the first half. Rio and evans were solid. I thought Evra had a decent game but saw a few of the normal problems that have occured over the last couple years.
Kagawa didn't see much of the ball which seems to becoming a problem? He doesn't get on to the ball enough and just goes missing in games. Welbeck took his goal wonderfully and made some good runs and worked hard. RVP should of had a goal tonight and was a constant thorn for Real. Giggs came on and didn't do too bad. Valencia has just looked off the pace of late. Anyway here is to a solid result.

Now for the positives and there were plenty. Phil Jones left everything out on that pitch, he ran and chased he battered and he flew into everything from beginning to end. He did it to Bale he did it to Fellini and tonight he kept the worlds best player very quiet. The boy has future captain written all over him. Michael Carrick the one United player who looked like he belonged on that football pitch when everyone was loosing their heads and swinging at the ball he was calm collected and played to feet. Danny Wellbeck. He may never make it as a centre forward at United but tonight he gave everything and chased every ball. The Madrid defence could not handle his pace and were lucky not to have a man sent off. If the boy was more clinical in front of goal he would be some player. DDG. What a difference not having balls lumped into the box makes to this boy. He looks world class and confident. Nothing he could do about the goal though mad Paddy might have jumped with Ronaldo. Some brilliant saves and he was getting cross at the defence which I liked as he needs to get vocal. Tactically I still think we stand off teams to much and I would love to see us close teams down but what I will say is that the boys did the shirts proud and a special mention for Ronny for a touch of class when he scored. Madrid will feel that they can score at OT but I know we can its all set up for a great game. I AM KLOOT

Believable2 Unbelievable5

I do think Ronnie will play in a red shirt again. Maybe not this summer, but the following summer is quite likely I think. We never know, it could be this year if Madrid are forced to sell and we have to show our hand. With the strong showings of Jones as an enforcer less money has to be spent on the squad which means more could be put towards him.

I suppose its me just being negative again but on a world stage surrounded by world class players Rooney looked over weight tired and out of sorts. Fergie obviously thought the same. He wanted to play a full game for England and I think it showed tonight players were just running past him. But hey that's just me I obviously have a downer on him and really he was brilliant and ran the game. I AM KLOOT {Ed004's Note - I agree though he did work very hard at times}

Believable9 Unbelievable3

Hopefully even the Rooney fans will have seen tonight, the difference between a good player and a top class player.

StevieK

Agree5 Disagree3

There was an article in the Guardian the other day asking where Rooney's "spark" has gone. If there was ever a time to sell him, it is now. From a business point of view his valuation will begin to plummet from now onwards. Still a top player, but he is beginning to fade performance wise.

Glad to be wrong and eat humble pie and over the moon with the result. We do need to finish them off at OT.

I thought our Carrick and Jones and DDG were immense and Rio and Evra had a very good game.

Rooney was very poor which I was very surprised as he has been in good form but his touch seems to let him down in a tactically tight game. RVP was class and I was also wrong on Welbeck as he was a much bigger threat than Rooney.

One final note, if we can put a few good passes together in the middle of the pitch, it looks like we can open them up as they play very high up the pitch.

Chicarito would be very handy and maybe we should go with him instead of Rooney in the return leg.

Shahram

Intersting point on Hernandez. Him up front with RVP as the no. 10 could be very effective against their defence. We'd need our midfield 4 to work hard though to make up for the work rate of Rooney. I'll be disappointed if we don't see Hernandez for at least 20 mins in the return leg (depending on circumstances at the time).

Great result. Definitley would've taken that at the start. Defended brilliantly and were dangerous going forward all night.

Rooney was poor. His passing, his touch and work rate were poor. Worrying if I'm honest.

Phil Jones was absolute rock and kept Ronaldo in his pocket.

David de Gea MOTM by far. Absolute world class saves by a proper world class goalkeeper. Enough of this Begovic sh*t, De Gea is our number 1 and that is that.

P. S. a couple more points:

Fantastic result! We're just ahead after half time, roll on OT!

We'll all be dreaming about those chances we had, but so too will Real. Brilliant away performance.

Difficult to single out one player when the whole team played so well, so I'll pick one from each area of the pitch.

DDG - Son you have arrived. Spell Bounding performance! World class save first half.

Ferdy - you may have lost your pace, but your reading of the game, and desire are still incredible. (Evans was immense too, but Ferdy pipped him for me)

Carrick - very good shielding job in the face of a very good Madrid midfield, calmed things down with his sidewards/backwards retention style.

Welbeck - Ran himself into the ground. Very good goal, Ramos was trying to foul him but couldn't get near him. Stretch and troubled their defense.

Can't wait for return

Wot abt Jones motm in my opinion

Agree1 Disagree0

Jones played very well without the ball, good scramble cover, and kept Ronny quite. What a player he will be! But I think he'll be an exceptional centre half, not a centre midfielder.

With Jones playing all over the pitch Carrick was left pretty isolated at times in midfield.

I'd have rather seem Clevs come on instead of Tony to fill some space in the middle. Even Hermandez would have offered more!

I thought Jones was immense in his role as a midfielder again, 2 great games against great competition, especially tonight. I prefer him in this role as a defender. Do we really need to buy that defensive midfielder? Don't say I'm getting carried away because the lad can fill that role. I'm really proud of the entire team, it's all for the taking in 3 weeks. Hats off to De Gea who was excellent. Needs to work on his crosses but I for one am happy to support him whilst he does (how about it Jono?)

Well done to Rafael who calmed down and had a solid second half. The whole defence did well throughout to withstand a lot of pressure. Centre halves just cracked on and dealt with everything thrown at them.

RVP could have had a couple, he worked hard but it just didn't fall for him. 2 great saves and a slightly fluffed effort but always a threat.

Not a fan usually but Welbeck was immense in his work rate and busyness. Top effort from him. And the old man Giggs still looked a class act on the big stage.

However. they say that big players rise to big games. Unfortunately, on the biggest stage, Rooney went missing. This is why the debate rages about him - on a major European night he had the chance to stamp his mark on the game and he was missing for most of it. I'm sure his groupies will be on here defending him but we've heard it all before.

Hey ho, good result and on to OT to try and finish them off. Oops, forgot Jones who was immense and is a United player if ever I saw one.

Wasnt his greatest offensive performance ever but did the job he was asked to do and but for the out of character miss hit by van persie would have been a great result.
Agree Welbeck was excellent tonight, as were Jones and De Gea

Will Red

Agree3 Disagree4

Never mind offensively, Will, he was wasteful and his touch let him down all over the pitch tonight.

Tried too many Hollywood passes when he should have been keeping it simple and helping the team keep possession.

Not a good day at the office - yes he worked hard, which I'll always give a player credit for, but that's not what a 'world-class' player should only be about - he has to bring more to the table than running around a lot.

StevieK

Agree3 Disagree1

I agree Stevie it was not his best performance but he did work hard for the team. He was asked to do a job and he did it, although admittedly there were a few sloppy passes.
If played down the middle he could easilly score a coupl in the return leg and send us through, but would still probably get slated on here.
I admire his work rate and he is a team player who doesn't moan when played out of position.
IMO he is allowed the odd off day as on his day he is world class.
But that is just my opinion

Bit of a shock lineup but we should all have expected a surprise with SAF picking the team! Not surprised to see Evans & Rio start. Not even surprised to see Welbeck start, he's a hard worker and we will need that tonight. The biggest shock for me is Kagawa in and Cleverly not starting, but then we all know what Kags is capable of so let's hope he shows that tonight.

I simply cannot call tonight,

Once thing I am pretty confident of though is Carrick/Jones, Rafael and Toni all sticking to Ronaldo like glue. As ronaldo moves across then Obviously it will change to Young and Evra.

We have RVP and Rooney, they have Ozil and ronaldo. I think the game is just far to close to call and in terms of player quality we are both very similar in attack and defence.

IMO, We'll lose to a narrow scoreline and it'll be won where they have power and we don't, midfield. Khedira/Essien and the expected to play Alonso will just be to much for us.

Also, Maybe Carrick should sit this one out, when we have the ball there aren't many better but the fact is we're not going to see the ball tonight so surely having Jones and Cleverley would be far more beneficial in terms of energy.

The Moon.

People may complain about our midfield etc however we can't control what the manager does. What we can do is get behind our team and support them no matter
what. Just because we are Manchester United does not give us the god for saken right to be always be the best. There may come a time when we fade slightly so bare that in mind. That when you are watching match tonight it could be a lot worse we could be Liverpool. Now let's be having it!

Dear all,
in the last two ties against Real Madrid, we lost both ties. Both ties were at the same stage as this one, the last 16 and on both occassions Real went on to win the Champions League. In all our meetings with Real Madrid, we have only ever once score at the Bernabau in an epic 3-3 draw in 1968 and we went on to win the European Cup.

History is against us in 4 ties we have lost 2 times in the Bernabau and drawn twice. Over the two legs we have only ever beaten Real Madrid once -1968. At Old Trafford we have beaten them twice, and drawn once, Real have won the other tie. Only in 1968 did we keep a clean sheet and that was the only tie where we played at home first. History states that Real have the advantage and the individuals who may cause us some damage.

But this is football and anything can happen. What we do know the previous ties have been enthralling and been great games. I hope no matter what the ultinmate result that the both legs are adverts for the great game we love and our United stand up and make us proud. Enjoy the game cheer us on and dreams can come true.

Emptyred

Emptyred,

We scored once in an epic 3-3 tie, did we get 3 goals for one goal, it must have been a great finish if so.

We also lost 3-1 last time at the bernabeu, so that's another goal, so 4 goals in 4 games at the bernabeu. 5 in 5 would be great.

So excited for tonight.

GDS

Agree1 Disagree0

Actually, we scored at Madrid in both 1957 (Tommy Taylor) and 2003 (Ruud Van Nistelrooy).

I was at both games in 2003, the 3-1 at the bernabeau was a very balanced game until bartez let 1 float right over him and becks should have made it 3-2 later in the game. the return leg we won 4-3 a great hatrick by ronaldo but again bartez was at fault letting a near post shot get past him 2 great games though and 2-1 to utd tonight have faith.

I just hoe people on here know what to expect tonight. Real Madrid WILL have 70% possession. Real Madrid WILL have the majority of chances. United WILL be doing 90% of the defending. This WILL all happen because this is the tactics we WILL be using. We will invite them onto us, we will soak up the pressure and we will try and break to score.

That is what our game-plan will be so do not expect anything different.

Sydney!

Believable13 Unbelievable8

+1

It had taken us a while, probably longer than it should have but we have now adapted to playing away games in the CL and fully expect the match to be has Syd has described, not many teams will go to RM and attack especially in a 2 legged tie.

We have to be absolutely solid this evening and be smart in possession, RVP will do the job in holding the play up but need others to make the right pass and decisions.

Really looking forward to this, could be a classic.

13 Feb 2013 10:59:14
I've no doubt that this will be the case Sydney! Soak it up and break as quickly as possible.

What are your thoughts Sydney! on Rafael and Evra tonight in respect to supporting attacks? Do you think they'll be given some sort of licence to push forward on counter-attacks, or told to not venture forward at all?

WF Red Devil

Agree1 Disagree0

Sorry for the Rafa moment, but there will be people on here during and after the game saying we cannot get the ball or our midfield is being overrun blah blah blah. Just remember these are the tactics we will be using so that will inevitably make RM look the dominant, unplayable force. We will have two rows of back four. When we get the ball we will break with Valencia, Young, Rooney & RvP.

Sydney!

Agree3 Disagree1

WF, I think they will get forward within reason. I would be surprised to see both fullbacks getting forward in the same attack. I see Rafael & Evra being backed-up by Valencia & Young. Carrick & Jones backing-up Rio & Evans/Vidic. It will be like two back fours when defending. We need to be disciplined and if we had played this way against Barcelona then we may have got something from them games. SAF was wrong trying to match Barcelona, I think he has learned from his mistakes.

Sydney!

Lfc, we will do what Chelsea done against Barcelona, what Juve done against Celtic, what Inter done against Barcelona and WBA done against you. It's how you have to play away in the UCL.

Sydney!

Agree3 Disagree0

Danny, I think until a lead has been taken it will be a cagey affair with RM having most of the possession. But the first team to score with have a massive advantage as the other team will need to press and both teams can hurt each other on the break. The game last night showed exactly what can happen when you concede an early goal.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Lfc,

You don't agree with syd then do you? Why exactly are you here today? It's a massive game for us and your posts are embarrassing.

We aren't going to park the bus, we are going to hit them on the counter attack, if you don't understand that might be the reason you are just holding on to top 10 and we are top of the league with a massive game tonight.

My Prediction:

Real Madrid 1 - 1 Manchester United

Ronaldo to score first for Madrid, with Vidic equalising late in the second hald from a corner.

Manchester United 3 - 2 Real Madrid

Ronaldo to score first again, with Rooney replying shortly after. Second half, Van Persie puts United into the lead, with Di Maria equalising. Leaving United to win the tie with a Van Persie goal 10 minutes from the end, and Old Trafford on the edge of it's seat for the final 10 minutes as Real and Ronaldo give everything to find the equaliser, that will also put them through on away goals. but it doesn't come.

United go through 4-3 on agg.

One thing for sure though is we would prefer playing against RM's style ass opposed to Barcelona's or Bilbao's style. We simply cannot deal with the way they play. RM play the traditional way so will suit us better.

We can't just sit back and allow Madrid to pile the pressure on, go out and play our game.
Nomidfield

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Feb 2013 11:06:31
Let's not forget here that Real Madrid will be very very aware of our quality on the counter-attack. Mourinho will no doubt stress to his players that it's critical not to concede an away goal - and that's the main priority.

Hernandez's pace in this first leg, could be invaluable. I invisage him not starting, but if we can keep things tights and perhaps bring him on to play off the last shoulder in the 2nd half, that'll make Real even more nervous about over-commiting on attacks, and leaving space at the back for Henandez to run into.

This match is very much a game of chess.

WF Red Devil

Agree1 Disagree0

Nomidfield, that is not what will happen and not what should happen. We will invite them onto us and we will allow them to have the majority of the possession. If we played like this against Barcelona in those finals we just may have won one of them.

We purposely played that way against Everton. We played the way we wanted to to perfection.

After two days in the jungle I return to my hotel on match day and what an interesting match day. Firstly well done to Ferguson for selecting the strong team on Sunday. Jones played the role I was hoping and the one he should have done at the end of last season against Everton and Felliani. Felliani links their play and Jones dominated him. It also shows the difference a strong player in midfield makes although we lost a little going forward

I have a feeling Jones may be asked to double on Ronaldo tonight although suspect Ron will concentrate on Evras side. What we must remember is Rons heading ability plus we have two small fullbacks which makes me think Jones will double up on him.

It appears Ferguson knows we must score, a 2. 1 loss is better than nil nil. Our chance tonight is that Madrid are nervous of going out, see through the first 30 minutes and their crowd will become more anxious and we will see if that transmits to their players, even better if we can score. We must not sit too deep as Ronaldo will shoot from anywhere and we also need that high energy closing down. We also need a bit of pace on the break as they are vulnerable.

A lot depends on how Ronaldo plays but we must get at least one goal and I feel we will get that but not sure if Real will get 2, for sure they are dangerous. let's hope Ferguson is listening to Meulensteen not Phelan.

Red Man

Believable3 Unbelievable0

It would be hard to man mark ronaldo as he switches positions a lot.
i think to counter him we may play quite deep and pull both widemen to try not to give him any space to run in to.
rooney might be asked to sit on alonso as well to cutof the supply to ronny

Jred, I see all of what you said happening, but I think Jones will still play and he will pick up Ronaldo. I don't think he will follow him around as much as he did with Fellaini, but I think he will be the first player Ronaldo meets every time he approaches the United penalty area.

How on earth is a 2-1 loss better than 0-0. That is utterly riudiculous, not to mention wrong. Agree with the rest of the post, however.

The first leg is always about getting an away goal. Nil nil is a dangerous score and of course I would rather have 1 all which is better but my point is the importance of an away goal

2-1 gives us the away goal which can act as an extra one in the event of a 1-0 home win. We would need to attack anyway at 0-0 In the second leg so to have an away goal to add to any in the second will add pressure on Madrid to attack leaving us to pounce. I understand what your saying that a draw away is better than defeat but with away goals to consider a loss by 1 but scoring away can be far more advantageous.
