well as we're talking about the olympics i won it earlier on football manager. Rotated the team a little and i lost wilshire after one game to injury but the team i mainly went with was hart, gibbs, jones, smalling, gosling, cleverly, rodwell, ramsey, bale, walcott, rooney. With carroll and sinclair as the main subs. First game against japan won three nil. Second against ghana won two one. Third against costa rica won nine nil. Quarter final beat mexico four one. Semi final was rematch against japan two one this time. And final against brazil was one nil. Great experience and a really good england team apart from the two welsh lads. Taste of the future. Unfortunately both wilshire and jones got injured but as i'm manager of benfica i'm not too bothered and the olympics looks good on the cv along with a portuguese league title lol. Rincewind

God the Internationals give the eds on here a bit of a breather eh? Haha.

Any hoo. What is it that people have against Baines? Solid performer, quiet lad, good ability (not exceptional) but christ the way he is playng over last 18 months compared to Pat its a no contest imo and Baines plays with far less quality beside him.

Only real issue I have with him is pace but on the flip side he puts a shift in both ways and its not pace thats the issue we have with Evra is it?

I think he would be a good cheap(ish) option who could fit right in without the questions of coming to this league/ language / new country etc.

Anyone have an idea how much he would cost? (cue Syd! response ;-)

Gonna slightly change the record here,

What players do you think will be selected for the Olympics?

I think it will be likely that the 3 that are allowed to be over 23 will end up being Beckham, Giggs and Rooney. Becks and Giggs because of what they contributed to British football. Well actually that's who id like to see go over 23.

SAF_IS_GOD {Ed004's Note - Wouldn't like to see Rooney go. Wouldn't want him tired before season starts}

Sick of seeing this bull about Internationals.

We won a friendly against Spain. Friendly is all i have to say about it, no pressure on the players to perform. And by that we barely won. We got the goal and held back. That isn't a win for me, its luck. Had we not got that goal, we'd of been going and going for it which would have given Spain plenty of chances on the attack.

Love how everyone jumps back on the wagon after a friendly win. Yeah future COULD be bright for england. Once we get a decent manager. And offload the older guys who as Scholes and Neville pointed out just go for self glory. E.g. Lamps, Gerrard.

I never thought I'd be saying this a few months ago, but do you think it's time to make our move for Rodwell? He's really stepped up his game this year, would work well with Cleverley in the middle IMO.

Hey boys & girls,

Normally read everything I can on the site before posting but I just don't have time today.

First time at New Wembley to watch the footy. Seen the Foo Fighters there but that's about it. Used to watch England at old wembley back in the dizzle.

To be honest the game was what I expected. The result certainly was not. I think everyone in the stadium was surprised.

First thing I wanted to say is that I thought Parker was fantastic. Technically very good, hardly giving the ball away and constantly chasing. We really should have signed him. Jones played further forward or even if he didn't he did surge forward like he does for us (regardless of where he plays). Welbeck was good as well, getting physical with the back line.

England showed yesterday that they can be resolute and tough to break down. As good as the Spanish are (I think they are fantastic) I know that their defence can be breached but we simply didn't get enough numbers forward.

If we can keep our direct game but refrain from punting it up field then we can make it through the groups. We were really predictable. Ashley did not venture forward once. He was always looking for the obvious pass. Johnson on the other flank tried to get forward from time to time. Bent was so isolated and lonely upfront that it looked like he needed a hug.

We need to really bring through the kids. I honestly thought we would after the screw up at the world cup.
I would probably take the Terry's, Lamps and Stevie G's but I wish they would be options not certain starters.

It's probably too late to go youth completely (not enough games left). But we need to take a few leafs outta the german book. Kids, direct counter attacking with intelligence (NO MORE LONG BALL).

If I was manager I would have dropped most of the seniors after world cup and by now my starting 11 would look something like.

BACK FIVE

1) Hart (not a massive fan, but we lack in this department).
2) Micah Richards (without a doubt the best English RB this season)
3) A. Cole (No one better, but we need to find a long term solution.
4) P.Jones
5) Smalling

Not trying to be biased for the defence but I honestly feel this will be the long term partnership (both club and International), so we should have had this in place.

CENTRE MIDS

6) Parker (in front of back four, no one better)
7) Rodwell (box to box, depending on what;s going on or who we are playing
8) Wilshere (further forward, making stuff happen)

FORWARD THREE

9) Rooney (Upfront, in the centre, where he belongs)
Welbeck until Wayne returns
10) Walcott
11) A Young.

Walcott and Young would need to support Rooney and if we are the stronger team then Wilshere needs to tuck in behind.

I would prefer this to the likely senior's we put out as they do not have the energy or pace to compete at the highest level anymore.

Need to find another Parker and A.Cole as I don't think the likes of Hendo or Baines are the same level.

I would wave good bye to the so called "Golden Generation". What a joke. Golden Generation HA, yeah maybe in terms of amount of money earned, not technical ability or even desire.

Hi Guys
Over the 25 Years that Fergie has guided over us there is no doubt he has made the odd error in the transfer market,I'm thinking of Djemba Djemba,Taibi and William Prunier to mention a few but without a shadow of a doubt the positives outweigh the negatives. Now while the majority of us were craving a world class centre midfielder (and still do) you have to take your hat off to the great man for signing Phil Jones. This lad is going to be the closest thing to the legend that was Duncan Edwards we have ever seen.
He is going to be an England regular for many years to come and in my opinion will be a United and England Captain in the future. At 16 million pounds he has to be the bargain of the season and surely puts into perspective the sums of money paid for Henderson and Carroll.

Just watching MUTV, Cantona:25 Years is amazing and at the end Helen McConnell asked The King if he could ever see himself taking over Sir Alex when he retires and even tho his response was he wishes Sur Alex to carry on forever he did simply reply "why not?". Now I know the likelihood of this happening is very very minimum but it still excited me!

Just on the England teAm again. Well done on beating Spain but please dont get carried away. Your media will say that the team morale is huge and that your defense can easily keep out the best team in the world.

I watched last nights performance and was very impressed with your defense. All 10 players outfield played the back four position.-- is dat gud tho?
79 /21 % possession .

I think this shud always be your starting lineup.

..............hart...........
Richards....lescott......Terry........cole..
.................jones..................
Milner.....Parker.....lampard........young
................Rooney.........................

Still defensive but will work

I have to say Rodwell looked very comfortable last night when he came on, there is a fearless way about him which makes him a very useful player to have in midfield, Jones, Cleverley & Welbeck also have this fearless quality and IMO Rodwell is just what we need to sure up the midfield. Under SAF he will turn into a very good player and Jones, Smalling, Rodwell, Cleverley & Welbeck could be the spine we need to make our team dominant again for the next decade. One or two top quality signings to add to this and I would be very happy.

I do enjoy having the Liverpool fans over on our page, but I have that they are completely bonkers. There is a fella on their page asking whether Real Madrid would swap Sergio Ramos for Glen Johnson. Have they witnessed how bad Glen Johnson is? Do they really believe Sergio Ramos would leave Real Madrid to play for a mid-table English club? Perhaps we could have swapped Obertan for Ronaldo? Like I said completely bonkers.

Then you get this 'Irish Rover' fella who made himself look a complete nugget yesterday, trying to put down the extremely talented Phil Jones, a player that Kenny was desperate to sign. Well was it fun for you Rover? It was fun for me watching my players represent their country. How did Kop flops Henderson & Carroll do :(

I have just read a few of the morning papers. Rumours aplenty about takeovers of Blackburn or Everton, by the Qatari's.

If reports are to be believed the Qatari's had their hearts set on us but the Glazers have refused to sit down with them, point blank.

If this is true which obviously we don't know yet, how does it make you feel?

Well okay maybe they would have the bottomless pit of riches like a city or Chelsea, we could buy who we want etc.

But then does a part of you think where's the kudos in city and Chelsea. Liverpool fans love city don't they at the moment, they see them as a buffer between us and success. But I have overheard them in their quieter moments discussing how they detest Chelsea for basically being what city are.

I look forward to everybodys views on this the Liverpool fans who come on here and the regular United fans. Try not to turn it in to a slanging match for once

For me personally a lot of my pride in what we have achieved particularly over the past 6 years is doing so without external assistance and under financial restraints, well in terms of how big a club we are anyway.

There's a lot of praise on here tonight for Phil Jones' performance in the England midfield. I think he did well in some aspects, less in others. For example, his discipline was brilliant - took the extra step forward when he needed to but wasn't drawn in by the best midfielders in the world. That's half the battle. His tackling was good, but his distribution was poor. I thought the commentator made a fair point when he mentioned that although Jones kept ending up in the AM position - I don't think his strengths lie there.

However, I still believe this to be a positive - as his final ball and his distribution in general will improve with experience. It's obvious to see he has the talent to put the ball where he wants to, all he needs now is to learn when and where - then we're on to a winner.

Welbeck also looked great. Fearless - and very fast.
