It seems this site(aside from the usual attention seeking scousers) is now the Tom Cleverly hot or not banter page.

To be honest this was bound to happen ever since two summers ago when the club implied that he could take up Schole's mantel. The truth is that it is unlikely that Cleverly will ever be a world class player. But at the same time he is a good player who has the potential to be a solid part of the United squad. It's not Cleverly's fault that the club have refused to improve the midfield, it's not his fault that our best youth prospect joined Juventus, it's not Cleverly's fault that the team are instructed to play possession football rather than a more direct attacking game. Cleverly plays the game to the best of his ability, he gives 100% and he has made a decent start to the season. In the same way that people tended to, and often still, blame Carrick for not being Keane. Cleverly cannot be blamed for not being the next Paul Scholes, I'm not sure if one is even out there at the moment.

The main problem with Cleverly is that he is a very unadaptable player. He doesn't do well in a two man pairing, he isn't potent enough to be the attacking link with a lone front man, and he lacks the skill to play wide. To get the best from him you have to set the formation to suit his needs and this means a three man midfield in which he is give a free role to operate between the defensive and attacking midfielders. The problem here is that you are now setting up a team to suit a player who will never be its driving force.

As I have always said, Cleverly is a useful addition to any squad, but he will never be the solution to United's midfield problems. He is not the world class player that we have needed for the last three years. He isn't to blame for this, but he is central to tired excuses that the club trot out each year to explain why we have failed to, yet again, improve the weakest area of the team.

Danny Pughnited

Believable6 Unbelievable2

Cleverly is a chuffing good player. He has bags if energy, always makes himself available and passes very well IN EVERY DIRECTION.

Why are people out to rubbish him?!?

He plays bet playing short pass and move passes, like Kags, and like we have moved to play recently.

Not many players can shine with an ageing Giggs / Carrick beside them and Valencia stood by the subs bench on one side and Nani losing the ball every time you pass to him invite other!

Give. The lad. A chance.

DodgyBanter

Agree14 Disagree5

Couldn't agree more db he's a great player and a brilliant passer it's like Carrick everyone says he passes sideways or back well if they look at his stats he played more forward passes than backwards on sideways.

Danny, lets not forget Scholes also said that Cleverley could replace him. If you ask me Cleverley is dealing with the pressure of being Scholes' replacement very well. Like you have said he shouldn't be getting criticised for not being Scholes. I would also like to say that no one is suited to a two man midfield anymore as the game has moved on. The diamond formation or a 3-man midfield is the way to line-up in today's game. The problem with our 4-4-2 formations is that we use proper out and out wingers as apposed to the Silva/Mata/Nasri type winger that will come into midfield to add numbers. That's why our two central midfielders are isolated in games, no matter who the two are.

Guys Scholesy is Scholesy, Cleverley will be his own man. We can never replace like for like. Let's give Cleverley a chance and see what he does. He's doing a good job so far!

Cleverley is a fantastic player. Pass and move at speed and his energy, enthusiasm and accuracy are excellent, he hardly ever gives the ball away. He's like a young Xavi/ Iniesta. Looking forward to seeing his development this season and hope he stays fit. He is a really important player.

Agree0 Disagree1

I coudn't agree more dodgy, the boy has bags of ability, but people are being so quick to rubbish him (mainly gooners and scousers) but if u get by the bitterness from there fans, england and mainly utd have a great little player, but everything u hear about clevs from gooners and scousers have to be taken with a pinch salt, because the same fans slate clevs then go on to to say how gd ramsey/wilshire/shelvey are or are going to be worldclass players.
Ive even seen some fans saying them three players are worldclass already which is laughable. we have been crying out for a players like clevs and if we can turn him into a more of a all round midfielder we have a utd regular on our hands. all the anti clevs debate is only brought round by the press building up those other players and getting the fans to think they are worldclass already, and as pep said when arsenal played barca when asked about whilshire '' wilshire is a gd young player, but at barca i have at least 10 of them in my youth set up'' and that was when whilshire was apprently playing at top form b4 his injury, all of them have the ability but lets just wait and see who will reach it untill we write them off. Arsenal won nothing with whilshire in there team b4 he got injured and that was with all the top players they had b4 they sold them and now they think because hes back they will win things without them?? NO! I sense a wake up call is around the corner very soon for gooners, and as for liverpool, well they have been asleep for about 20 years+ now so blah!
Chris the REDman

Agree2 Disagree2

No argument from me on this one. I believe the players around you make a huge difference and can either make you look great or sometimes pretty poor. Messi and Ronaldo are great players but their supporting cast is also incredible and no I am not comparing him to those guys.

I think in footballing terms Clevs is like a rookie and you need to give him time and a supporting cast before we label him as great, average or poor.

I can assure you non of the above three players are world class and just fans dreaming. Wilshire is better than the other two but in the same boat as cleverly.

Shahram

Agree0 Disagree0

He is only 23 it might take him a few years to develope into a world class player but at the moment he is a very good player.

Gareth Bale is an excellent player and in a couple of years will be world class. He single handedly gave Wales victory last night. What a player. I guess this puts to rest all the 'Bale is overrated' chants.

Believable4 Unbelievable9

He is overrated, but he is still good. Every British player is overrated due to the media.

TK-Red

Oh dear, are you seriously going to try and settle the debate on bale by a match against Scotland? I've heard it all now.

He is majorly overated and incredibly inconsistent.

Oi!

Cheeky bas**rds!

You'll find it's a very good gauge of a top player if he can score v us! Last lime we played you guys how many did you score again?!

;-)

Jono

Agree2 Disagree1

Whys that then? Because of a 25 yard screamer that has more chance of going into row z than the net and a dive for a pen?? so in short no! bale is overated only in the sense he is a worldclass player, he is just a very good player with the ability to turn into a worldclass player, but he has to leave spurs to progress to that level.

Has any one noticed how well Cleverley links up with Anderson, how well Cleverley links up with Rooney, how well Cleverley links up with Kagawa and the understanding he has with Wellbeck. If one takes time to look , there appears to be a common denominator somewhere.

If England had beaten an average team 5 - 0 last night then I would have been impressed but they were playing against the worst team in world football who made England and all their supposedly world class players look very pedestrian. I think last night highlighted exactly why United frustrate so much. There was plenty of tippy tappy but no cutting edge. No body wanted to run past a player. Sydney compared Cleverly to Scholes last night which is still making me laugh hours after reading it. I sometimes read your defence of the Glazers and think you must be on drugs but to compare Tom C to Scholes is definite proof. Not fit to lace the great mans boots. Pogba and Morrison where far better tallents and you know that. I AM KLOOT

Kloot, ur posts are always laced with sentiments. We all know cleverley is nt beta than the ginger prince but i would pick cleverley over pogba and morrison.

Agree8 Disagree3

Klooty boy - your hatred does you down - Sydney made some good points - and you come up again and again with that old trope of Sydney and the Glazers.

Cleverley is an exciting talent - whether he gets close to the standard of Paul Scholes (but who can) will not be known for some time - and lets face Paul Scholes wasn't the standard of Paul Scholes when he started. But still he is an exciting player - he is OUR exciting player. Sometimes I think you would rather see the likes of Cleverley and indeed our team fail - just so you can have the satisfaction of whining on about the Glazers; and that doesn't mean that you don't have valid criticisms of them.

As to Pogba ( I think 002 explained that) and Morrison - talent - maybe - but utterly worthless without the right application and attitude.

Mike

Agree8 Disagree4

He played well but he is no Scholes. As for Morrison, he is wasting his talent and Pogba clearly had another agenda.

For TC to be compared to Scholed or many other United players he needs to get picked regularly and deliver consistently.

AJH

Agree2 Disagree0

It doesn't matter how good the players are when San Marino stick 11 players in the penalty area. There was no cutting edge because there was no room in the final third. I compared Cleverley NOW in his first United season to a YOUNG Scholes. Not a fully developed Scholes in his prime. Drugs or no drugs I would never defend the Glazers. I deal in facts and facts remain that we have spent £130m (net) since 2010. Like I said FACTS and if you want to put a little spin on it so it makes your argument sound better then go ahead, but the manager has had a minimum of £130m (net) to spend since the summer of 2010.

Pogba is a better player than Cleverley, but a completely different type of player. In fact he should be playing beside him instead of Carrick, but he moved on. Ravel has proved this week that he will never make it as a Football player. The lad is a cretin nothing more, nothing less. But we are kind of moving off the point here and that is that you have decided that Cleverley will never be good enough after just 20 England and United appearances. Fine, that is your opinion and you are entitled to it, but I am surprised that a United fan who blabs about Sir Matt every half an hour and what he did for the youth academy is criticising a product of Manchester United's academy before he has had a fair crack, especially when he has been good all season.

Sydney!

Agree12 Disagree2

Agree, don't get all the hype about Cleverley, very average player.

Red Daz.

Agree3 Disagree12

Cleverly and Welbeck worst 2 England players last 10 years, if these are the future god help are national team.

Agree3 Disagree7

Couldn't agree more Jred, I just found it amusing how a United fan would criticise a United player after a very good England performance against a dreadful team. You can only play the team that is in front of you. Do you think the fact San Marino are a poor side is a good enough reason to crititcise Cleverley? Especially when he played very well. Baffling.

Sydney!

Agree9 Disagree2

Typical comment from a spoilt football fan. We win 5-0, could of been 6, 7, 8 or 9 and "fans" come on saying, well it's only San Marino, the worst team in the world! Had it of been 1 or 2 nil, then these "fans" shout out how bad we are and just not good enough!

These "fans" are the ones who failed in football and bitter about it so they want the teams they allegedly support to fail so they can harp on about how they would do this and that and that's how it's done!

Be nice if for once, praise could be given when their team wins and a young man had success rather then point out the negatives!

Ports

Agree6 Disagree0

Syd
at the end of the day he played well so you cant criticise him.
but at the same time san marino are that bad that a good performance also means nothing. I know that sounds a bit critical but i thinks its hard to take anything from that game.
That said he did play well and deserves credit because if he had a poor game he would of got slated.
jred

Agree1 Disagree0

Exactly Jred that is my point. San Marino are poor so there is no need to blow Clevz trumpet so to speak, but to criticise him for having a good game is very petty IMO. It's not his fault San Marino are shockingly poor and he had a very good game anyhow so it was strange to come on here and see a United fan criticise him for playing well. That's all I was saying.

Sydney!

Agree4 Disagree1

I think the poster was right about Kloot, seems he jus wants to see united fail so he can blame the glazers, Cleverley is a fine player, nobody is sayin he's as good as scholes because no one is, but u should at least get behind him, it's not like he's playing badly is it? Sydney is right about the glazers tho, however much there taking out the club they are allowing us to spend, it's not their fault fergie won't buy a midfielder! We've spent over £100 million in the past 2 years, I fink most clubs would b happy with that? Stop blabbing on n just support the club.
Love united n love everything about them!

Big Mac

Agree5 Disagree0

Cleverley is a good player but nowhere near where Scholes has been or where Scholes was at the same age. I think the question that needs answering is what does Tom excel at. He doesn't play well in a midfield two with two wide players but is better when we have more in central midfield. Is he a natural goal scoring midfielder or one that controls games? Not from what we have seen so far. From observation he moves the ball around well with short passing, has energy and will have a part to play whilst we play the style we are at the moment. Is he going to win the ballon dor or be player of the year? Probably not but he needs to find his niche in the team. He has a part to play but people need to be realistic about his level and what he will achieve. If we go back to two wide players then he may not play but his quick movement and passing would suit what we are playing now, however I wonder if he can play in the same team as Kagawa.

When he wears the shirt he should have our support but the next Zidane or Keane he is not.

Red Man

Agree3 Disagree0

Red Man, I am not sure anyone believes he will reach the heights of Scholes, but he should be given the opportunity to put his own stamp on the team. He may turn out to be a great player or he may remain a very useful player to have amongst the squad, but whatever happens he should be given the time and support from the United fans. Criticising him when he has been nothing but impressive is petulance. We all know Kloot's main issue with Cleverley is his new TC23 brand.

Sydney!

Agree1 Disagree0

I think cleverly is a good player and it is not fair to put him down because you have to take what the game gives you and sometimes it does mean passing sideways. No point in trying a forward pass that is not there and lose possession. It also helps if you have people upfront that are making themselves available, which sometimes our forwards don't as they can be very stationary.

The other thing that i have noticed is that a lot of times our forwards have their back to the gaol when they receive a pass and instead of turning and taking on a defender they pass it right back.

He is no Scholes as in his prime he was the best midfielder in the world and that sort of expectation is not fair on the boy. I think he will get better if we buy a supporting cast in midfield that allows him to take more chances.

BTW saw a rerun f the Belgium/Serbia game and Dembele was excellent. I think we definitely missed out on a high quality player there and wish we had conjured up the funds to get him. I also think Chelsea have a gem of goalie in the Belgium keeper and he will be one of the best in a few years.

Shahram

Agree1 Disagree0

Shahram, exactly my friend, stick a defensive midfielder next to or behind Cleverley and he will naturally have more license to take more risks. A very good point.

Sydney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Shahram

We didn't miss out on Dembele, we bid a pathetic amount and were rightly laughed at.

If SAF was serious about bolstering our CM our low bids this summer would have been far more realistic.

Jono

Agree0 Disagree0

Syd with someone like Jones sitting behind him and a Dembele type player along side him and two quick cb i.e Smalling and other, I think he would shine as he can be a lot more positive and even if he gives away possession, there will be cover.

I really think at the moment the reason we play a lot of sideway stuff is when we give away possession, players like carrick and scholes do not have the legs or pace to go track back a counter and it leaves our makeshift aging cb's having to deal with it.

If you watch the Tottenham game we got beat for sheer pace on their first 2 goals and it was not because of an outstanding piece of skill of build up play.

Shahram

Agree0 Disagree0

Scholes is scholes, cleverly is cleverly end of! but Kloot why do all your posts have to ridicule others?? Syd makes very good points and has the b*lls to say what he thinks, you just reply to others with a certain bittnerness that would have us believing you belong more to the kop end than the stretford end!

Great stat from the England game, Cleverly had 165 touches of the ball, the most any England player has ever had on record. I know, it was against the worst team in the world, but great to see him, Rooney and the Ox linking up so well.

Be great to see England line-up with a front 6 something like this, at some point:

Cleverley
Wilshere

Ox
Rooney
Sterling

Welbeck

Kloot, Cleverley had two shots on target which were both blocked, understandable when there is eleven opposition players in the box. He got two assists and he rarely passed backwards or sidewards all night. He went past players several times and linked up great with Welbeck and Rooney, he always wanted the ball and was all over the pitch. To be fair I am not sure what you expect from him because he looked like a younger Scholes last night. I guess you are one of those people who never changes an opinion on a player once you have made your mind up. Sad really. Especially as you bleat on about Sir Matt and our youth policy regularly. Here's a player that has been at our club since 12, gone through all the youth levels and had his loans which the club sent him on, now he gets his chance in the team and 'supposedly' fans like yourself won't give him a chance. Who needs Blair and Stoner when we have fans like you.

Agree0 Disagree15

Should you change your mind on a player after a game against san marino

Agree0 Disagree0

No name, your mind shouldn't be made-up at all right now. Cleverley is still progressing. Judge him at the end of the season. But lets be truthful here, Cleverley was good in the Olympics, has been good for United this season and he has played in every international. It was only against San Marino and his performance should be taken with a pinch of salt, but you can only play who is in front of you and he had a very good game. If Cleverley doesn't make it as a United player then so be it, but I will support him in the meantime, I certainly won't criticise him when there is absolutely zero reason to do so.

Sydney!

Agree12 Disagree0

Kloot, Cleverley has been playing well all season, hence the reason he is playing for Manchester United and England. It's always good looking back in hindsight at Scholes' career, but most of Scholes' best performances have come from him in his late 30's. I cannot remember watching Scholes in his first United season and thinking he will end up the player he did. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I do not see a great deal of difference between a 22/23 year old Cleverley and a 21/22 year old Scholes. Albeit is was much easier for players back in them days than it is nowadays and Scholes had the luxury of having Keane next to him, not Michael Carrick.
