A few final thoughts on the world cup, not many strikers hit the heights lewandowski, Costa, Jesus, aguero, Suarez, giroud, Werner and falcoa may feel a little disappointed and lukaku and kane will be grateful for a pretty easy group .
Not many keepers caught the eye even the very best ones ddg and neuer .
In defense trippier played well but varane was truely world class .
Midfield, modric showed he can run a game and pogba and kante have shone for their discipline .
The star of the show has been mbabbe who has looked electric in the later stages .
The big guns had mixed fortune, Ronaldo had one great game, Messi disappointed and maybe has a little too much influence if reports are correct and neymar has undoubtedly got talent but is a bit embarrassing sometimes play acting .
I wasn't left feeling there was a truely outstanding team even the final the dominant team lost, but fair does France were probably just about the best team in it .
I'm not as critical of England as others have been, we are half decent but badly lack a player or two with stardust but then again that applies to a fair few teams I guess.

Good shout Slate. I noticed that as well, many strikers scoring in the group stages, but not as much in the knockout rounds. I thought Subasic and Courtois each put in a big performance along the way. Mbappe's pace is breathtaking. Even that brilliant pass today from Pogba, Mbappe began 10 yards behind the defender before blowing by him. Perisic deserves a mention for an outstanding performance, capped off by his goal today. He doesn't just beat his man and get crosses off, he overpowers opponents offensively and defensively.

But most of all, I thought Luka Modric was absolutely brilliant. That said, I think France won simply because of too much quality - Varane, Umtiti, Kante and Pogba controlled the middle and then you have Pogba combining with Mbappe and Griezmann going forward. That is a lot of quality right down the spine of the team, and they are deserved winners.

Agree1 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 21:31:19
According to some, Pogba was dreadful all tournament, wonder how people get to such conclusions?

Believable4 Unbelievable2

15 Jul 2018 21:41:17
Most everything I read rightly says that he was excellent. Defensive discipline, kept the ball moving, some great passes in behind for Mbappe throughout the tournament, and a decisive goal in the World Cup final. Pogba has silenced his critics and should be proud.

Agree4 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 21:42:41
I don’t think he was dreadful, he was decent, but no more than that and I saw France in most games, similar to at United, flashes of brilliance and frustrating in equal measures, some good games, some inneffective, having Mbappe, Griezmann and Kante in and around you helps mind. France overall was solid, just did enough through the groups, burst of goals in a couple of games but prob worthy winners in the end however.
Pogba is a World Cup winner tho, can’t argue with that well
Done to the lad, I hope that matures him next season if he’s with us still rather than go the other way and think he’s the man with nothing to prove.

Agree1 Disagree1

15 Jul 2018 22:09:01
Doesnt matter what other people say, he put in a man of the match display in the world cup final.

Hes etched his name into the history books.

Agree4 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 21:21:46
Now the World Cup is over we can finally look ahead the the new Prem season.
Dalot I think we all agree is for the future, Fred I am interested in seeing, highly rated, I imagine another couple of signings a Cb, lb perhaps and Bale if possible and some outgoings to come.
We need to make a fast start this season, City and Spurs May suffer World Cup hangovers, could be a good opportunity to get off to a flyer as Jose teams have tended too in title winning campaigns, let's not forget our impressive points total last season if we match that I believe we will end up as champs.
I don't imagine all out attack but I do see wins and game management which ultimately lead to trophies and I for one have been critical of the style but I am fully behind José and the lads this season, make no mistake tho, it prob is a defining season for José.
Liverpool will be there and abouts again, City of course, who knows what to expect of Chelsea, Spurs I feel could be the team to drop a bit. Welcome to Cardiff my adopted team and be interesting to see wolves and Fulham in this league again.
Roll on Friday night footy and Leicester!

Believable1 Unbelievable1

15 Jul 2018 21:45:17
I am also looking forward to seeing Fred on the tour. And I agree on the possible signings: CB, LB, and winger.

CB - lately it's Alderweireld, Maguire, or Bonucci
W - Bale or Perisic
LB - only Sandro in the papers and he might be off to PSG.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - If Shaw proves his fitness I would sacrifice going for a left back if it meant we could get a world class cb in like Alderwerield and Bale in. However I'm unsure if he has any chance of winning over Jose. Bonucci is an interesting one. Always felt he's slightly overrated defensively and was carried a bit in that Juve defence. Though his ball playing ability is second to none for a cb. I think I'd rather go for the safe option in Alderwerield.}

16 Jul 2018 10:25:57
Ed004 - Bale is never a CB in my mind.
:) )

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - With how deep out attackers player they need to have a bit of defensive wit about them}

15 Jul 2018 19:13:36
The board were against offering high amounts of transfer fee for Perisic last year ehich we shouldve as at one point he was available for a reasonable fee.

Thr board will look absolutely silly if we go for him this year as thr player is a year older and will cowt a lot of money compared to last year before his transfer fee went up.

Believable4 Unbelievable4

15 Jul 2018 19:37:33
Singh really because Jose has just said on tv that he doesn't know why perisic chose not to join United.

Agree4 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 19:48:18
If u read eds comment from last year he did say UTD h3sitated buying a old player like him as they didn't see value in him so i'd be shocked to see us going for him this year as he is a a year older.

Perisic bever rejected us we hesitated to pay the initial fee and then we did bid the transfee fee had gone up which UTD decided it was too much for a playrr of his age.

Agree0 Disagree5

15 Jul 2018 20:00:24
Jose has just said live on tv he doesn't know why perisic rejected United when he wanted him last year.

Guess we will have to make do with sachez.

Sanchez a better player so i not that bad missing out on him. I just home Sanchez kicks on and scores loads this year which i am sure he will after having rest this summer.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 21:02:24
We all know why Jose said that. The board didn't back him last year in his mind. He's said that because he thinks they're not backing him again this year.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 21:37:22
The lad signed a new contract with inter . we then went out and made Sanchez the highest paid player in EPL history . But the board didn't back him?

Agree2 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 21:57:22
Didn't the ed say we had a value for him and weren't willing to go any higher?

Plus, never take any heed what Jose says is another famous one of ed002s.

From what I read from various people and on here, united wouldn't go any higher in their bid.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 21:43:50
The board back signings with big names, not ones that will do the job as the manager wants.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 22:19:52
Angel well if you have read it .

United have never spent money like this current board has done .
Broke the world transfer record when Jose wanted pogba, 90 mil on lukaku Sanchez the highest paid player in EPL history .

But the board haven't backed the manager?

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 23:17:28
As I said in his mind.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2018 09:04:33
They have spent ridiculous money on players. I think ones that have a higher marketing player than say a player like perisic.

I think ed002 has proven to have an incredible success rate when it comes to talking about players so I tend to believe him.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 17:41:45

Defensively been excellent for France .
Doesn't look interested or happy at United certainly when compared to him in the French shirt during this wc.

15 Jul 2018 16:56:24
I'm confused why the first goal is classed as an OG. The freekick is on target, so why isn't it Griezmanns goal? Obviously when a player shoots and it deflects off a defender (or keeper) the striker gets the goal, so why is this freekick different, anybody know?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

15 Jul 2018 17:18:25
That's a good shout that beast.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 17:33:08
It was on target but the keeper would have collected it. The touch off the defender took it past the keeper.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 17:44:45
I always thought if it was on target and took a deflection it was the strikers goal .
Off target takes a deflection own goal.

Agree1 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 19:29:54
My understanding is the same as that jred but it must be deemed an attempt at goal i believe. Grey ish area.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 22:23:21
I am under the impression tbat if the deflection drastically changes the path of the ball then it is an og. Otherwise it is credited to the striker.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 23:46:29
Pretty sure if on target and deflected, it’s the attackers goal - even if it wasn’t intentionally a shot. If it’s off target and would therefore be missing without the defender’s intervention, then it’s an own goal.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 16:31:24
That's probably another £20m on Perisic transfer fee.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

15 Jul 2018 17:33:35
I still say he would've been a good signing last summer.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 17:40:02

Bet we wished we signed perisic last summer now, add another £25m to his value.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

15 Jul 2018 16:51:52
1 good goal doesn't warrant buying a player.

Yeah he's looked a good player but so have a bundle of players.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed0333's Note - is he that good tho?

15 Jul 2018 19:34:05
I don't watch Italian football so can't comment.

But from the world cup all I can see is now and again he puts in a good ball works hard and is strong.

Plenty of times he gave balls away and isn't naturally gifted at scoring goals.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2018 19:32:56
He is effective ed i think. He will create a couple of good chances for himself or others in every game. He works his line very well.
On the negative side he gives tje ball away a lot.
Not worth buying now. He would have been effective last season i feel but it never happens so move on.

Was talking to a friend yesterday that works in the megastore and he was saying that a lot of rumours have obviously been flying around about players coming and going, he said that Herrera and Mata could both be leaving this transfer window and that Sandro is a very likely incoming player.

Just wondering if ED002 could shine any light on it.

Hi ed002 can i ask is there any interest in Luke shaw. There were reports he turned down an approach from Everton. He doesn't appear to have much future at United and i would have thought a club like Everton would be a great opportunity for him to get his career back on track.
Thanks.

Rashford to be given the number 10, leaving the number 19 shirt available. Bonucci currently plays in 19? Ok, I'm just thinking out loud. I don't really see Marcus being given the #10 yet, nor do I think we will go for Bonucci. But I would certainly take him at Utd. Born leader and could be fantastic, particularly in the middle of a back three. No credible reports of us being interested though?
On a side note; with Kohler signing with us (yet another sponsor! ) I keep thinking about sponsors helping to pay wages (e. g. with Ronaldo to Juventus, if rumours are to be believed) . I recall a while back there were rumours suggesting Adidas might help Utd pay wages when we were initially after Pogba, I think? It makes sense financially - Addidas or Chevrolet would benefit from having more big names at Utd, furthering their brands. Of course, sponsors do contribute to transfers anyway, albeit indirectly by the very nature of paying large sums to sponsor the club. What I am talking about is Adidas, for example, approaching Utd and saying "we would like X player at Utd due to their world-wide appeal, if you are interested? and we would pay X toward wages". Or if Utd would approach their sponsors in a similar fashion. Does anyone know if this (sponsors directly helping fund deals or wages) actually happens or is just paper talk?
Cheers.

Ed002 but be able to clarify things on this one. I remember a while back he mentioned something about Adidas potentially trying to play a part in moving Messi (an player sponsored by Adidas) to one of their major clubs, which at the time were Chelsea, Bayern and RM I believe but obviously never came to fruition. I may be wrong here but maybe someone can help because there was something along the lines of that! Hope this helps guys.

Very good world cup from England, you guys should feel optimistic about your future. I'm willing to bet you will be one of the protagonists in the next 2 world cups. If you guys bring a very creative player in the middle then you will be there (semis or final), too bad Scholes doesn't play anymore : ( but your future looks very bright i must say. You were crap before but the way you are playing footy and the age of your national team you make you optimistic about your future.

15 Jul 2018 11:21:42
Based on what? Scraping past Tunisia, beating a terrible Panama, losing to belgium twice, scraping past Columbia on pens, beating Sweden and losing to Croatia? I really don’t see where all this nonsense of England being a top side again has come from. If they got belgiums side of the draw they would of been out first round after group stages. As soon as a half decent team came around they got dumped out. All this Southgate the saviour rubbish really is laughable. Bang average team and won’t win major honours with this squad.

Agree4 Disagree2

15 Jul 2018 11:55:27
The mis-placed hype is really grinding my gears, even people whose football opinions I have respect for in my private life are trotting out the line about being really impressed with Southgate and the England team.

Stand hits the nail on the head. The problem is you have a lot of people that don't know much about football harping on about how impressed they were with the performance all over the media, and that spreads to people that should know better as they are too afraid to call it out because we reached the Semi-Finals.

Southgate told the world he was not prepared to change formation before the tournament, so intelligent teams like Croatia knew exactly what to do and that we worked on nothing but that same system which has massive faults. He picked the same team each important game, irrespective of fitness levels or performance in prior match.

Media were non-stop about how dignified and calm he was during and before games, but i smell a rat there as well. Out of his depth and intelligent enough to realise that if things go ok that obvious weakness would be jumped on and twisted into supreme knowledge. I'm seeing pictures and comments about knighting him! it will be the same thing with Kane winning the golden boot, he must have been the worst performer ever to win it, that won't stop the media though!

Great we got to a Semi-Finals, but it felt just like our Europa League run a couple of years ago, stumbling past poor teams playing poor football, only Jose has a lot more nous than Southgate and got us over the line - Southgate fell at the first hurdle higher than his ankle!

Most of the players were below standard as well, attackers and central midfield in particular. I came away frustrated not buoyed, never again will we have such a great opportunity and it was ballsed up by inept management for me. How Alli, Kane, Lingard, Young played so many minutes I'll never know.

{Ed007's Note - I don't bother much with international football and have only watched about 6 games in the World Cup but I was giving an Arsenal supporter I used to work beside a bit of a ribbing when England went out and he came back with the usual answer about Scotland didn't even qualify so you've got a cheek to laugh - I said to him to just remember that when Celtic lose or get put out the CL next season :)

15 Jul 2018 12:40:30
Wow, i just see things differently, someone said you had better "Teams" in 96,98,02 and 04, no you didnt. You had better players but no better team. Someone else questioned my enthusiasm about your future based on what? Well, i believe nothing comes from coincidence and you are Sub17, Sub 20 world champions, sub 19 european champions, your sub 21 made it to the euro semis, you are Toulouse champions (not an uefa or fifa tournament but very prestigious regardless), you finally have a plan on a formation of a footballer. I just read a very interesting article about your football's future and the project of "England's new ADN" and i share Lothar Matthaus sentiment when says the future is english and french. Sadly Southgate didn't have the player to do a better world cup but he will have them soon besides this have been a very good experience for your very young team. You are going to have a very good 2020 euros and a very good 2022 world cup, save this post.

15 Jul 2018 13:16:02
You can only beat who is put in front of you and that’s something England have reguarly failed to do at tournaments. There is a feel good atmosphere around the squad, we have a Manager that has created a ‘team’ and who behaves in a dignified manner, the team did better than we thought. We didn’t put teams to bed when we were dominating the, which led to some squeaky bum times but generally this has been some of the better performances I have seen from England in a long while.

However, Southgate will have seen the game slipping away against Croatia and yet he did little to change things. Kane was picked continually even though he was either knackered or injured; I fear he is becoming Rooneyesque in that he gets picked irrespective of form. The final was within our grasp and yet once again we came up short. But, this was the youngest squad at the tournament, if they can develop and we bring a few more through than in 2 or 4 years who knows?
