Without it been a loan deal, is it possible to move on Sanchez and still pay some of his wages? I presume not, but he might sit on the bench and earn millions.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Yes but the club won’t want to do that.}

15 Mar 2019 18:57:20
Ed002, I was wondering if you could clear something up for me. There have been several "reports" of Christen Eriksen possibly being sold this summer as he will only have 12 months left on his contract. Is that likely and if so would United be interested? For me Eriksen is the best player in the EPL south of Birmingham. Thanks.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Spurs want a new contract signed and he has been holding off. They don’t want to go in to the final year so, if he doesn’t sign, he will be sold. MU have shown no interest so far.}

15 Mar 2019 20:34:04
Where would you play him in our usual 4-3-3 system shappy? I am presuming pogba stays so that leaves either right wing or herreras position but that would leave us exposed defensively.

DSG, I would play him in Pogba's place if he was to leave.

Ed002 good evening.
Id like to ask you for some insight into the wage ceiling issue facing united this summer .
As i understand it, we are close to our ceiling inculding next seasons incremental allowance.
So is it very much the case that in order to balance the books so to speak that with potential impending increases for ddg rash and pogba, that in order to bring in new players that we need to sell / release players?
Fellaini valencia and darmian are certainly sure to be off the wage bill.
Mata possibly and rojo.
The club seem to have put themselves in a poor position regarding sanchez as he is tying up a handsome part of the wage bill whilst not making any significant contribution.
If we do have to pay a player off all or part of a contract does that go down as wages the following season? Ie still part of the wage budget?
I know you don't like talking money however there is often confusion or misunderstanding as to why the club don't 'spend big' or buy players some would say are needed. The constraints we are under on wages is an issue that is difficult and moving players on who are on very inflated contracts cannot be easy and until that happens we will be hampered in our attempts to reinvest.
Finally are there other top 6 clubs in simialar situations with regard to complying to ffp wage rules?
Cheers.

{Ed002's Note - Without going in to too much detail there was a major problem that was solved by ZI leaving. The problem has come back not with transfers but with increased spending on wages for new contracts. Sanchez is taking up a major chunk of the wage bill as you say. Although others will leave, players will arrive and it needs to be managed. In terms of other sides, Arsenal had a problem that was largely fixed by Sanchez leaving - now they need to manage it. Manchester City has a problem but it is related to the source of income that is paying some of the wages etc.. Liverpool need to manage their wage bill but are Ok right now. Spurs are fine as they started low and have generally maintained that. Chelsea are fine but that is because they are aware it needs to be managed.}

Great question Ken. Thanks Ed2. Nice to read something other than Ole or Poch!

Agree2 Disagree0

15 Mar 2019 17:13:12
I think that's why we we're seeing a move back to the academy. Ease out the expensive flops and buy a few quality players. Wages can be managed if we can move on the usual suspects.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Mar 2019 17:50:28
Thanks Ed002.
Its a situation that looks to have developed due to poor planning understanding and management.
Have a great st Patrick's weekend.
We might get lucky in the summer and find buyers for sanchez and rojo in particular.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - There are some countries where Rojo would not get a WP. Italy would be an option.}

Solskjaer on whether Alexis Sanchez will ever come good at #mufc: 'Yeah, I hope so. You can never be 100% sure but Alexis is such a determined lad. '

Anyone agree, would you give him another season.

I don't think we have much choice.

I was such a massive fan of his at Arsenal. When he scored 30 goals he was arguably the best player in the league. On the face of it, it seemed a no brained to sign a player of his calibre. We all thought that his poor form in his final 6 months at arsenal was due to wanting to leave. But in actual fact he seems in decline. There are shades of Torres at Chelsea with Sanchez. He has lost that yard of space to play on the wing and perhaps wants to play centrally. However, pogba is better than him there so the bets he can hope for is a squad player. I would love to see him come good but it’s very unlikely. Think we need to shift him off the wage bill and bring in a young, quality rw.

15 Mar 2019 13:38:04
Probably not based on matches so far. But he sees him every day in training so must think he can get something out of him. The most disappointed I've been with a signing since Veron.

15 Mar 2019 14:16:08
I think that we will move him on this summer, even if that means paying towards his wages at a new club. Over a year here, and he looks past it.

Probably the worst draw but I’m absolutely buzzing! This is what the champions League is about. These are the sort of matches that old Trafford deserves. These are the sort of nights that will be remembered for years to come. We have the attacking players to trouble Barcelona on the counter. It will be damn hard. Containing Messi will be a challenge. But this is not the Barcelona teams of the past. We can do it. I’m so excited!

This is what it’s all about, bring it on!

We never imagined we’d have CL QF fixtures to look forward to back at the start of December. Let’s make the most of it!

15 Mar 2019 16:44:13
I cannot wait, so happy with the draw, I think Liverpool or city would have been a much worse draw, let's show the world what we can do against the best team left in it, if we don't win then so be it.

To win this trophy we'd have to beat a team of this quality at some stage so we may as well look forward to it. You never know we might even put it up to them, after Paris anything is possible!

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Mar 2019 23:06:00
If you want to win the CL you e got to play and beat the best. Simples.

Agree0 Disagree1

16 Mar 2019 04:47:09
I don’t think it’s the worst draw. essentially we have a shot to nothing; no one thought we’d get past PSG, and we’re underdogs again, losing wouldn’t be embarrassing, so it’s set up to be a proper united champions league tie!

Well let's do Barcelona and then Porto and meet City in Madrid.

Believable1 Unbelievable3

15 Mar 2019 11:53:48
Juventus will make the final. Ajax first, then City or Spurs. Plus they are so far ahead in their league that they can focus on the UCL.

Liverpool will beat Porto, have you seen their record against them? 3 wins 3 draws no loses. Although a 0-0 draw away, followed by a 1-1 or 2-2 draw at home will see them keep that record but fail to make it through. However, sadly I don't see that happening. The plus side of Liverpool's draw is that they practically have a guaranteed four more games in Europe, with their squad that could cause them to drop points in the league and stop them winning the EPL.

We will have to beat Barcelona the likely Spanish champions to make it to the semi, in that semi we play Liverpool the potential EPL champions, make it through that game and we will likely have to beat the probable (almost certain) Italian champions.

But I suppose it's called the Champions league for a reason. If Ole lifts the trophy again this season, no one could call him lucky as he will have had to beat at least the champions of France and Spain, and possibly the champions of England and Italy as well.

Also we can approach the game in the same way as we did with PSG, with nothing to lose and everything to gain. It worked out well last time, if we can learn from the PSG tie and take that into the Barcelona tie then there is no reason why we can't make it through.

Juve and Barcelona final. I doubt we will beat Messi this year as he will be a handful for our defence.

What does their previous record against Porto have to do with the price of fish? I think they will win over 2 legs but not because they beat them with a totally different set of players years ago.

GDS, past records do play a part in a teams preparation and in the psyche of the players.

That being said records are there to be broken, as we did against PSG.

15 Mar 2019 17:32:38
Mort, Liverpool fan here, popped over to see what yous made of the tough draw. Can't believe people disagreed with the post from Shappy, was puzzled at that, then scrolled down, read your post and laughed. I agreed with yours, despite the rivalry between the clubs I'm not petty, good luck guys.

In fairness, anyone can write yous off because yous drew Barca, but how many thought you would beat PSG in Paris? Those type of nights are what football's all about.

Ken - I think we pose a real and significant threat on the counter. Get Herrera on Messi and who knows. We owe them for two sobering final defeats. Of course Porto or Ajax would have been nice but these are the games that get you on the edge of your seat. Old Trafford will be rocking the old place has missed these nights. Believe!

Its's payback time.
This is the weakest Barcelona side in the past few years.

Agree7 Disagree2

15 Mar 2019 12:01:38
If we are going to win it then we might as well beat the best teams available. Plus there is no shame in losing to a side like Barcelona. Imagine if Liverpool lose to the weakest side left in the competition? That in itself is a different sort of pressure to deal with.

We had no chance against PSG, and look what happened. So I see this a good draw. We either win and are heroes or we lose against a side that is expected to beat us and we can concentrate on forth or even third place.

Agree11 Disagree4

15 Mar 2019 11:24:55
Fixed lol
Just to make it worse we get switched to playing home first.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

15 Mar 2019 11:56:11
We played PSG at home first, that didn't turn out too badly. Personally I would rather play the home game first. If you can stop the opposition from scoring then you give yourself an excellent chance in the second leg. Whereas, if you play away first and don't score the pressure is massive coming back home for the second leg.

Agree8 Disagree1

16 Mar 2019 04:55:29
You have to give us a chance. The obvious way to beat us is to stick someone on Pogba and mark him out the game, a la Marquinhos. Barcelona don’t play like that usually or have someone for that role. unless they change their whole system so Vidal could do it. We’ve got a great chance if we can contain Messi and dembele, and even if we lose, these nights are what it’s all about!

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Mar 2019 11:20:21
We are screwed but how easy can it get for Liverpool. Odds are just being stacked for them now.

Believable0 Unbelievable2

15 Mar 2019 11:57:57
Glass half full or glass half empty. This draw means Liverpool will have to play at least 4 of a maximum of 5 games possible left in the UCL. That is a massive distraction when they are fighting for the EPL title. Have they got the squad to compete in both competitions without losing games? Well now we will find out.
