i think its clear we need another centre mid, i personally think we need a strong defensive midfielder who can win the ball in the centre which will allow cleverley/anderson to playmake.

seems to be a lot in the german media about Goetze, but like any other upcoming star, he is going to be linked with the major clubs.

hope we bring him in, however can see him going to madrid.

would love to see m'vila or javi martinez here, clear to see they are real talents who are strong and can win the ball back

any know of any interest, even if just slight, in either of the two above?

some of the stuff on here tonight really is laughable, The majority of unnamed posters are just posting what the commentators said last night, Rooney was isolated, Giggs, Carrick and Fletcher were poor, Valencia and Park weren't very good, etc, etc.

In my mind, and remember this is how I see it, we have one team bursting with energy, creativity and youth, then we simply have a another team who get the job done but the ugly way, now i don't have a problem with that at all.

It was fairly obvious seeing last nights line-up that we wasn't going to get a master class of football, we had a 5 man midfield which had played about 60 minutes of football between them all season, Fletcher looked okay i thought, Valencia wasn't at his best but I think their LB was just very, very good, hence why Nani didn't get much of a look in when he came on either.

alot of people on here, are now saying it's back to the 'old' United, which i don't really understand either because i was quite impressed with last season as a whole, i didn't expect us to reach the latter stages of the champions League or FA Cup, nor did i expect us to not lose a game for over half the season.

anyway! my point is that we can't set the world alight with amazing football everytime we run out, we really can't expect to dominate every game when we field a weakened, less fit side, albeit more experienced.

a lot of people are saying we were very poor, but in actual fact i think Benfica were very good, Aimar showed us he's still got it, their forward showed us why he's one of the best in Europe at the moment, and their back 4 played well, better than i think we all expected.

to sum up the game last night I would simply say, we were below par due to returning players getting a run out and they played very well and proved that the over looked Portuguese sides can still run with the big boys.

May i also just add that Anders was very, very, good in goal.

so, enough with the Sir Alex hasn't got a clue, Giggs, Fletcher and Carrick are rubbish, we need a CM, etc. Shows how fickle and idiotic our fans are, this time 4 months ago Giggs was the greatest player to ever grace the EPL, now he isn't fit to wear the United shirt, oh lordy that makes me laugh.

To all those shouting for a CM, lucky you're not incharge otherwise as soon as one player in any position under performs we buy another player, admittedly it appears that we do currently need a CM, whether it's Sneijder or McCarthy we do need a little strengthening, but as the likes of Gan have mentioned, We've got Pogba, Tunners, etc, around the first team, so let's play this year with a 'terrible' and 'pathetic' midfield and next we'll play with a youthful, talented and creative one..... If that's okay with everyone?

Good night guys,

P.S - Sydney, I don't think Kuszczak, Gibson, etc are going anywhere until the summer and I also don't think that Berbatov is leaving or being punished, I simply think he's being kept as another different option up top. - In answer to a post of yours from a few days ago.

I think that result was exactly what we needed last night... it gave some of our second string some match fitness against a middleweight european team who can pass and be creative.

Carrick has to go (2 decent games last season, granted against Chelsea), Giggs still has some left in the tank for this season, Fletch was sloppy but is getting his eye back in to match time after a length lay off and will feature through rotation with Cleverley who needs to get up to speed with a full season... He, Wilshere, Jones, Smalling and Kelly will be the back bone of England (yes Liverpool fans, i just complimented your player)

Anderson has made a good start, lets hope he fills his world class potential

Personally i was disappointed with Utd against Benfica. We actually made them look good. Im not being arrogant here but we didn't play well at all.

Rooney was isolated up front and persistantly tracked back to start to start moves off for only fletcher carrick and giggs to lose possession.

In comparison to how we played befoer Benfica game that ball moved around very quick and we tore teams apart. Last night was in fact boring. No flow from Utd. I know we had to give some players 90 mins etc but Fergie should be rotating his squad once we have qualified from CL its been a common mistake my Fergie to rotate his squad before CL qualification has been secured. As oppsoed to leaving it until the last game.

Evra is starting to fustrate. He looks like he isn't interested in playing for UTD.

Also i hope Pogba plays some part against Leeds in carling cup

Imagine how good he could be Ed004 if he didn't hit the drive through everyday after training.... Can't believe you haven't bought a quality CM. Most can see your MF is the weak point, all other areas look decent. {Ed004's Note - Just decent I suppose, that is why we have scored something like 18 goals in 4 games, Anderson is not fat, he is a physically big build and the majority of it is pure muscle.}"""
dear Ed
well said
many here underrate the quality of Anderson
and the pairing with cleverley is immense
pity about our fans though
ngiak is so glad sir alex did not get ws
it's the best decision of the season
Fletcher has not played for many months
he is class too
with pogba and tunnicliffe coming in
we have quality, youth and desire in the middle
ngiak is excited for the present and near future

Anyone think Javi Garcia (Benfica) would be a good buy?

Read this site every day for ages but first time writer. All 3 signings are brilliant and Young has proved me wrong !. I think we have the class across the back 4 (not convinced by the twins yet though), upfront and out wide to beat any team, however, CM not good enough. Clerverley has impressed and although I like Anderson he is only good (not brilliant). Carrick is pants and Fletcher has the odd brilliant game but is otherwise average. We should have strengthened in the summer. I'm glad we didn't get WS because we only want players who would die for the shirt and not because of the fine details in their contract...Should have cashed in on Berba and I think we wanted Gibson out but he wouldn't go. Park on slippery slope to being very average. However, i trust SAF and what he says goes, as long as he is making the decisions !!
Any weight behind this young lad at Everton, the new Robson!, i hope so but i think we need some class experience in there. {Ed004's Note - But what midfielder out there would have improved the team, that was reachable?}

For the Chelseas game I'd pick a team to take the game to them from the kick off.

I'd start with De Gea - let's see how he does against quality opposition. Jones at RB with Rio and Smalling in the middle - Evra LB. Fabio as sub gives you a lot of options if you need to move the back 4 around.

Valencia on the right will give Cole plenty to handle.

Anderson in mid and Rooney / Chica tandem up front.

That leaves two slots - one in mid one on the left.

Young definitely starts and personally I'd play him on the left because I don't rate Bosingwa defensively (better going forward) but could play him in the middle if he wanted to use Nani on the left, although Fletcher / Carrick are more likely to partner Anderson to start. Fletch would be my choice but he won't last a full game.

Late on if he needs to SAF could push Jones into mid to replace Fletcher / Carrick.

I wouldn't use Evans in this game if I could avoid it.
Don't see Berb featuring either.

This group has a lot of flexibility that will give SAF a lot of options during the game even without having to sub to make changes.

I'm going for 3-1 win (Rooney, Young, Chica) - and maybe a red card for Luiz

Scotbos (Boston USA) {Ed004's Note - So you wouldn't start Nani? Cause on their forms so far this season Nani has been the better due to the fact he has not been injured but Valencia did not impress me last night, however Valencia always roasts Cole, so am not sure...}

now again.. I understand that de gea has had a rough start and lindegaard is bought as nr 2.. BUT.. i really think that when de gea has had a few more games and he maybe (hopefully) has shed some of the nerves and small mistakes, after that maybe 2-3 more games ,, we need to put lindegaard on, i think he has the 10-15 % more right now.. and thats means alot at the end of the season!
and if we give de gea a few more games we can bench him without it being because hes not good enough but because he needs to rest and get there slowly.. and maybe its not all that wise to put all our trust in a 20 year olds shoulders no matter how great the tallent!

Who do people believe will start in midfield against Chelsea? I thought it might be Carrick, but Fletcher did go off early, was SAF trying to reserve his energy? Surely SAF will choose Jones or Smalling over Evans at CB after we saw how easily Cordozo turned him, Torres could have a field day against the Irishman. What a difference a Serbian makes, 24 little tackles.

What an abysmal performance, reminiscent in every way of watching last year. Mindless torpidity throughout the centre of the team. Like watching a slug give birth. Nobody now can be in any doubt concerning the lack of prowess of Carrick, Park, Evans, Fletcher and even Giggs (although his goal was a reminder of better earlier times).

We have a totally convincing Plan A (but now shorn of a critical midfielder and a forward considerably better at playing football that Hernandez) but no plan B.

Our entire prospect is simply leveraged against the injury roster. That's Scotch planning for you.

liverpool players are fined a weeks wages for a yellow card and 2 weeks wages for a red card this is the reason meireles left liverpool,he had a poor disipline record.Liverpools argument that he wanted to leave are lies,they wanted him out as he was the main culprit for costing liverpool a place in the uefa cup through the fair play league.This season liverpool are determind to make it onto channel 5 next season by beating fulham to the fair play cup,also heard a rumour john barnes is coming in as kennys number2 ,the celtic legends will then change there names to paul and barry after the chuckle brothers,joeyored {Ed007's Note - Now you come to mention it, is C*****e A**m LFC's Berkovic? £5.75 million we paid for him as well!!}

red man whats with the constant moaning about pogba? As far as i am aware no one on here said we never bought a midfielder in because of pogba. I do remember plenty of people saying he was twelve months away from the first team and a loan would be good for him. We didn't buy anyone. I think were all disappointed but get over it. And stop blaming a teenager.

Last night was a good time to give the players some match fitness, without the fear of losing crucial points in league and with good opponents. Fletcher was playing after a long time, he will come good. Evans is back to his former self, he needs an experienced defender alongside him to cover his F**c ups. Talking about Carrick would be a wastage of time, he is over.
Played good in second half, Lindegaard was exceptional, looking forward to the chelsea match.

Syd!

At your earlier point about the youth and maybe SAF didn't want to do all the changes at once.

I think if the way he has brought on Clev and Welbeck with Championship then EPL loans before bedding them in doesn't boad well for the introduction of the replacements from within for Carrick, Giggs, Park, and a +1 in CM. The only youngster away is Tunners and only for 6 months.

I hope his thinking is to bed Pogba with 5-6 apps this year. Him being around the squad on match days and that will help his understanding and let him be the point of knowledge for Tunners, Ravel Etc when they come up.

Tunners, if he does well I think will make step up in team on another 6 month'er for the remainder of the season so he could possibly be ready next year but with the constant questions over Ravel I think he is reluctant to let him leave on loan. Which will only hold him back imo as he seems to not be making the same progress as Pogba into the 1st team plans.

If he see's Tunners and Pogba head off to the first team and he has reserve's to look forward to he might loose it again. Not saying that will happen but those type of players wont be short of a few whispers in his ear saying 'why are you not there too?' maybe turning his head.

I do think all will have Utd careers but imo after not signing a CM this year we should be using last nights and a few prem games to bed both Ravel and Pogba with a app or 2. We who watch reserve and youth games see they are raw but can keep that pace in passing and slickness up and not have to resort to last years lost tactics to just give guys game time.

i think to increase creativity in middle , why not use one of nani/young/valencia as am or playing all 3 and swapping them in wing and middle during the game

Away game decent opponents decent point. Hard climate midfield working for match fitness. Three wins at home the magic ten points. Probably win the other two aways anyway but one will do. So What,s the problem? Fletcher good to see him back. Didn't play half as bad as is being made out. At least we got a bench for saturday with a game under there belt. i think benfica deserve some credit. Defensively they worked hard. They have good balance in there team. Me i'm happy enough. Shows how much anderson and cleverly are value to the creativity though. Cons red
