DDG had a cracking game tonight, looked relaxed and confident

Well tonight was in interesting night, as Sir Alex said we din't play well but we never were when you had Jones Young Nani and Cleverley all coming back from injury plus Fabio making his first apperance since he was last injured(although he has been training for awhile). It's no wonder we looked alittle disjointed. I though Jones played with his usual passion, Cleverley looked good but clearly needs games, Nani was frustrating to watch(and it looks like he'll get a long run of games now Valencia is out for awhile), Young for me looked more like doing something than Nani but wasn't great. But the best thing for me was Fabio's performance it's a toss up between him and Evans for man of the match for me and that a sentance i didn't ever think i'd say. lol. We did what was needed to win and now in the next game i think we'll see a strong line up with Young Jones Nani and Cleverley given more game time then at half time if were still 2-0 up or more then we could see some younger lads be given a run out Pogba, Petrucci maybe and possibly Will Keane could all get a run out which would be good.

We should be safely through to the next round now barring a shock result next thursday.

If We Played All Season Like We Did In The Second Half We Would Never Be Beaten. Eriksen Looked The Only Decent Play For Ajax Tonight. Really Good To See Cleverley And Young Back Just Hope To God Valencia's Injury Isn't Serious

Agree Ed mate all of the jokes that got through on our site were crap. I'll be next to get slagged off by him lol. Also really can't see Eriksen playing in England anytime soon. He's made his preference known for Spain and that won't change anytime soon. Also he rejected Chelsea and Man City and AC Milan are the most intrested. Would you want him anyway if the first chance he got to go to Spain he would?

Valencia is injured ! A hamstring injury that might put him out of action for up to a month . Bad news , very bad news ...in 2 weeks we have tottenham and valencia has been our best player by far . Fingers crossed, hope he will be back before ...

Blair.
Anderson or eriksson! I take it you have chosen to forget wen anderson made gerrard look average. Gerrard was in his prime and Anderson was 19 and dominated him. Also as the song goes "he sh0ts on fabregas". He had some bad injuries but at 19 he was just as good a prospect as eriksson if not better. I can't think of another midfielder to make that impact at a top club at that age other than Wiltshire. You don't just lose the ability to outplay gerrard and fabregas overnight. With another good run in the side he will find his form like at the start of the season then we've got a real player on our hands.

Good result in the end but as SAF said very ordinary performance.

Whoever decided the tempo and tactics in the first half is the cause of many of our problems away from home and particularly in Europe. We need to be sharper in our passing and break quickly yet just didnt set out to do that. All too often it would be safety first and pass back. So SAF improved it in the second and we came out a bit quicker. Saying that we scored and stopped, hard to understand.
Individually Young was sluggish in the first, Nani inconsistent and wasteful, Hernandez cannot hold the ball, good running on to it but struggles in all other positions. Jones is a beast and Fabio had a good game. Valencia showed more in the few minutes he had than Nani has for a season. Really struggle to understand how Nani is rated so highly by many on here. If we can get anything over £25M in summer , grab it.
Rooney did ok but when I watch him I want to know how much extra practice he puts in. When Valencia went off why not give Pogba even a few minutes, hard to understand.
Ajax were a young inexperienced team and we should have been able to put them away far better. So sluggish and in SAFs own words ordinary but a good result, it was performances like that which put us in this competition so my question is why the slow tempo almost no urgency to score for too long. Did we not learn from the Champions League exit?

My thoughts remain that our No2 Mr Phelan just is not good enough.

Ah well we won,

Good result tonight then lads. Should get us through fingers crossed. Thought we started sloppy but dominated for important periods in the 2nd half

Plus points:
Jones back and looked brilliant, going forwards especially.
Nani back, bit inconsistent tonight but we need him back as he’s a game-winner.
Young back – did OK too and scored the vital 1st.
Cleverly I thought looked sharp, great first touch and played a couple good balls
Lastly Hernandez back in the team – looked dangerous when given the chance, so glad he got his goal

Overall I’m chuffed with that. Now bring on the League run in with an almost full strength squad (bar Vidic/Fletcher)

I think our best team line up is:

----------------- De Gea

Jones/Rafael ---- Ferdinand ---- Vidic ---- Evra

Valencia ----- Cleverly ------ Anderson --- Young

--------- Hernandez/Welbeck ---- Rooney

If you take that as our best starting 11, then where do you think we could improve realistically?

Give yourself a £50 million budget which i think is what we will have in the summer, what do all you regulars/new posters want to see happen?

As Sydney said, Eriksen is playing where Anderson normally does, to be honest, i'd take Eriksen all day. Neither particularly track back, but by the looks of it Cleverly will spend the majority of his United career sitting deep with the odd break forward.

The side looks like it lacks familiarity and general fitness, Cleverly looks sluggish, Young looks rusty as do a few others. Once again massively impressed with Evans and Jones, they have been our two best players so far.

I think even on the base of this first half performance, i wouldn't say no to having Eriksen here - the only stopping block is would he run to Barcelona at the first opportunity? I think so.

Cleverly may be the biggest sticking point in signing an offensive central midfielder like we all want - Eriksen for example, how would he fit into a 4-4-2 with Cleverly? I'm not convinced that he would even though i would like him too.

We will have to see tonight, if he sits and can tackle, then it'd be ok, i look forward to seeing how he does against Cleverly and Carrick who i think will control the game.

I have been reading alot on this site and I just wanted to give my opinion on them.

Hummels - I am a big fan, but I really can't see it happening, (even though I'd like him to), I think he's Madrid bound, probable Carvalho replacement.

Hazard - Not gunna happen. I think he'll wind up at Chelsea, despite all this Spurs talk.

Cavani/Lavezzi - Doesn't really need crediting with a response, they are destined elsewhere.

Modric - I feel he may extend his stay at Spurs.

Martinez/ Garcia - Until both scholes AND giggs retire I can't see us signing anyone who plays in that role.

Goetze - German, will probably want to go to Bayern, also not sure he is strong enough for the prem.

Bale - He is the one guy I feel we will sign, particularly if 'Arry goes on to manage England. I think that's probably the only reason Bale remains at that club. He has said his idol is Ryan Giggs, and this probably being his last chance to learn from Giggsy first hand could be a big make-weight. And to be perfectly honest I think he understands Fergie is the right manager for him to further develop under, with his track record of turning good wingers into truly world class wingers (Beckham, Giggs, Ronaldo, Nani).

And finally, away from the potential INs.

I want to talk about someone frequently being talked about leaving, Anderson.

Ed, could you please clarify his position within the squad?

I along with the majority of the fans, believe he is a good player, with the potential to great if he can start scoring a few more goals and get a season with no major injuries.

First half of the season he was one of the best and most consistent players in our squad. Rewarded with a new contract last season, and yet he is still being talked about leaving, which IMO is not fair.

Would love to hear your opinions guys, particularly Ed.

Can we stop with the Ronaldo return stories please, it simply won't happen. I don't care if he wants to leave Madrid he won't be coming to us.

The Transfer fee for starters, lets say we do get £80 Million to spend in the summer I'm sure everybody at United would rather spend that money on bringing in several players both with potential and current playing ability instead of bringing in one player who in trust won't really solve the main issues, we need a forward but we're not desperate for one.

His wages are going to be around £280K? He certainly won't take a pay cut regardless of how much he's on or how much he loves United.

Plus he's now got a child to think about, is his son settled in Spain? what about his girlfriend?

I think he'll stay in Spain for the next 2 or 3 years before then moving to Italy for a couple of years and playing out his final few years back in Portugal.

but if we are talking transfer targets, I think we all recognize that we need a LWB, CM/CDM and possibly a left footed LW.

Well, Evra is going nowhere, whether we want him too or not so it's unlikely we'll actually purchase another LWB/LB unless it's going to be youth which I also doubt considering we've got Fabio, Fryers and Blackett all looking to be in that side in the next few years.

I personally think we'll go for a Box2Box/CDM, my personal preference would be Mascherano but that's not going to happen, My guess would be either Rodwell or an older more experienced CDM maybe someone like Veloso (although not actually him, I haven't seen him play for a couple of years). I don't think we'll go for someone too young though simply because of the competition between Pogba, Jones, Tunners, etc. for the box2box/CDM roles.

If we are going for the CAM/Dictator role then obviously Gotze and Eriksen are the front runners, personally i would prefer Eriksen. Although there are players who are slightly cheaper with similar ability Gaitan, Kagawa, etc. I think Gaitan will be our number 1 target simply because of the lack of competition for his signature, his lower price and because he'd be willing to join, my problem with him however is that I've got a feeling he'll turn out like Anderson.

The Left footed, Left winger problem, well, I have no evidence to support this but I think we got Young because we couldn't get Bale, the same way we got Tevez because we couldn't get Berbatov in that year. Now, If Redknapp takes the spurs job and somebody like Lambert takes over at Spurs instead of someone like Mourinho then I think we'll get Bale and possibly sell Young on in the following season or keep him as a back up.

If not Bale then well I'm not too sure who else we would go for as a left footed player. Pedro is right footed but has a sensational left foot so he may be worth looking at, although he has played in 29 of the 38? games for Barcelona this season (Mainly as a sub?), so with the form of sanchez and Adriano as well as Villa moving to the left and Messi through the center and at times having Iniesta play there he may feel like he needs to move on? If so then I think he's certainly worth looking at.

there's also Podolski But i think he's better suited to playing up top as an inside forward instead of as an out and out Left footed winger.

Bale would be top of my list, then Pedro and then Podolski although Bale is the only one who I believe is realistic.

Out of all the players mentioned I would rather have Eriksen, Rodwell and Bale instead of having Ronaldo back.

That's just my opinion anyway.

The Moon.

Someone further down made the point that we don't have anyone to replace Rooney apart from maybe giggs when he's not playing. Iv'e seen Welbeck drop deeper now and again but he's not really that type of player. I think the most important position that needs looking at is Rooney's. We need someone who can play instead of him or with him (because we're lacking something when he's missing , more than anyone else). Long term someone else maybe need to come in, but maybe Petrucci is one player who can fill a role there but more like season after next (with some games to establish him before). On a more positive note is it me or I seem to have seen in the last few games little glimpses of maybe another great side being built from back to front?
I'm glad people are laying evan's etc because maybe they don't see them as first 11 starters but those type of players brought through are invaluble squad players that make a great squad. It's why in the past SAF reluctantly let go of Butt, P. Nev, Pique, Rossi and so on as someone who grows with you has more of an affiliation with the club. Not just bringing in anyone to maybe start or sit on the bench.
As soon as we get rid of players like Brown, O'shea etc at a young age is when we will get problems. That's why for arguments sake i can see Diouf definately leaving but say Macheda imo staying long term. SAF said in the transfer window that we have 3 or 4 long term targets. Who might they be? I will only hazard a guess that they can't be any older than 23/24 max. but I would'nt like to say who. Any one of Adryan, Kovacic, Alcantara, Martinez could be in those few I reckon.

How would you feel about spending our budget on Hummels and Gotze, put in a joint bid of say £60,000,000?

With these two we would have another CB, DM, CM, RW, LW, CAM as between them they fill all of the positions. We could get the fee down by including Berbatov and also we could afford to let go others such as Rio Ferdinand.

A first team could line up like this:

_______________ De Gea/Lindegaard

Rafael _ Hummels/Smalling __ Vidic/Jones __ Evra

___________ Cleverly ______ Carrick/Anderson ___

Nani/Valencia _________ Rooney ______Gotze/Nani

I'm pretty happy with the players that we have been linked with today. I would also like to say that, whilst i mention alot of players daily, i do it to create discussions which i find interesting. I want us to get the right player, not just anyone, talking about them helps us all to formulate good ideas of what we actually want.

Delighted to see that the Gotze rumours are resurfacing, what a player he would be for us. Forget Eriksen or anyone else, if we got him he'd be excellent as he is so versatile and has so much talent.

Director of Football - David Beckham
Manager - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
Coaches - Ryan Giggs, Paul scholes
Goal Keeping Coach - Edwin Van Der Sar

As we do not have a game at the weekend and SAF will not want his players going for too long without playing, it looks like SAF is keeping to his word and will be playing a strong line-up. I still think we will see Pogba in the team, but I think he will be a sub. Watching Pogba in a decent team will be a delight, there is a massive difference playing in a settled quality team, than in a team that isn't gelled and in a team filled with fringies like Kiko, Diouf & Gibson. So what is the line-up going to be lads? I think Amos may get a game in this tie, although he may play in the OT game instead. Smalling, Jones, Cleverley & Nani need games so should all start, certainly three of them. Now Berbatov hasn't travelled I can see Rooney playing in the hole, sadly we have no one else who can play there other than Giggs and he hasn't travelled either. I will go for this line-up:

__________DDG
Jones__Small__Ferdy__Fabio
_____Carrick__Clevers
L.Nani____Rooney____Young
________Hernandez

Amos / Fryers / Evans / Scholes / Pogba / Valencia / Welbeck
