From what I'v read, LVG is ready to activate the release clause in Benteke's contract(32.5mill). Apparently he favourited a tweet linking him with a move to MUFC where he would be backup to Rooney.

He has since unfavourited the tweet but I think for what he's capable of and being 24 where we would easily get a good 6 years out of him, the 32.5million doesn't seem that bad.

I really hope we look at other targets first. I'd love Lewandowski. What a player he would be for us

Agree5 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 23:34:21
Papers say lpool have him sigh of relief he's good enough for them but not us we need a world class striker hfully lewandowski if he's available
Personally I think we're going to struggle to get a striker this season

Agree2 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 23:41:42
I'm quite relieved to see that Liverpool have activated his release clause. He is a good striker but he is not world class and would be a poor signing on that basis. For a little more we could potentially sign Lacazette, Lewandowski, Benzema or Cavani. I'd even take Harry Kane ahead of him given that by the end of the window we're likely to have lost three of our homegrown players (Evans, Fletcher and Rafael).

For me Benteke suits a style of play that I just don't want to see us playing.

Matt,

I am guessing your joke went unnoticed, it did make me laugh, and when people respond genuinely it also makes me laugh so well played.

The love fest for Oblak on this page is ridiculous.

The fact still remains he's the 2nd best keeper at Athletico behind Moyà who is top drawer in La Liga.

Oblak is poor, people need to get over the 4 good games he's had this season, for me, he's the reason Athletico didn't do as well as last season in both domestic and European competitions.

His positioning is poor, his catching is poor, his reflexes are poor.

The guy is basically a poor version of Mignolet and if United go near him then I guarantee we will not only concede very sloppy goals but we will not win a premier league or champions league trophy with him as our number one.

Anybody who thinks otherwise needs to watch Benfica games 13/14 - pre Xmas and the games he played in the 14/15 season pre Xmas.

Being completely honest, I'd rather see us sign Krul than him.

Jose, was it you that did a keeper breakdown article a few months back? I can't remember who did it exactly but can't find any trace of it. Any help, please?

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 23:44:26
It's posts like this that the 'agree' buttons were made for. A promising prospect no doubt; but the chances of him getting anywhere near the level of Big Dave are slim at best. Right now the only keepers even close to his standard are Lloris, Neuer, Cech and Courtois. Given that our chances of signing any of those are slim - I'd sooner keep him and lose him on a free.

Agree2 Disagree1

17 Jul 2015 03:52:08
I had no idea how good or bad he is. On here I only found everybody praising him and thought he might actually be that good. This is the 1st post in which someone has said he's not good enough.

There was a point a few seasons back where he was selected to play RM ahead of Rio - and I remember thinking to myself that at that point, based on form, he was probably the best CB at the club ahead of Rio and Vidic (this was towards the end of their United careers, I should stress). If only he could have held onto that consistency and continued to develop we might be talking about who to sign to partner him. As it is - I can only wish him luck at Everton. I think he will do well there.

His agent has already come out and said that he would be leaving the club and that a deal was all but agreed. Assuming we pay £30m or less - I'd be thrilled if that deal was with us.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 20:56:45
Instead of Ramos and Otamendi we should be looking at the Korean defender chelsea are linked with Park Di Bus.

Believable12 Unbelievable0

Very funny. People think that Ji Sung Park was the 1st Korean to play for us when he was actually the 2nd. The 1st was Yung Li Sharp

Is there any idea of the progress being made by Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, our 6'8" Serbian youth goalie? He was loaned back to his club of origin last season.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

16 Jul 2015 21:54:55
He's on a special diet to make him taller and fat. Once achieved he'll just have to go and stand in front of the goal and do nothing. Everyone will forget about De Gea then.

Agree2 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 22:25:43
It's been really hard to find out info, I tried when doing my end of season analysis and neither myself nor the scouting buddies I have were able to find out anything concrete about his progression.

I think he's quietly developing under the radar like and I quite like that. I would expect to see him around the first team til 2020 though

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 19:41:13
42million pounds for a 29 year old CB is just too much imo.

People will argue that he is world class and this is the going rate in the market.

Is it really? Which other teams are paying that amount for 29 year old players?

Have we learned nothing from the RvP transfer? Ramos will ask for huge wages but the total financial outlay for this one transfer is just way too much imo.

Believable4 Unbelievable2

16 Jul 2015 20:00:58
At that price I agree totally, far too much, no matter how good, rather Otamemdi for about £10m cheaper.

Agree3 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 20:10:49
I agree it is a lot of money. but if he produced at the top level for another 4 years in which time we won at least 1 premiership and champions league then we would all say it was money well spent.
He looks like the sort of player who will play well into his 30s.
Also. for all the RVP issues he did win us the premiership in his first year!

Agree5 Disagree2

16 Jul 2015 20:43:11
I would pay that for him and he is a top class centre back wit lots and lots of experience.

The Sergio Ramos posts are becoming more repetitive and mundane than last year's Arturo Vidal fiasco.

It'll be Nicolas Otamendi. Simple as.

Agree4 Disagree0

17 Jul 2015 08:28:58
For the amount we are splashing on Ramos, personally I'd rather buy Laporte from Bilbao! Cracking defender with years ahead of him! On the talk of young players, Mitrovic! Everyone is going after him now? He'd be great in the centre of our forward three, and at 20 the guys a tank! Sod £40m on Cavani, get Mitrovic for half that!

A lot of paper talk now that evans is on his way to everton for 7-8mill if that's the case good luck to him and i consider everton a decent standard in the prem so its a good move for him.

I dnt like slating players he clearly puts in a lot of effort and has his good periods but overall its clear that man utd need a better quality of player and him leaving opens up the space for otamendi i hope

Ed001 could I ask u a question from a neutral point of view, posters feel free to a see too,

Who would you feel is most suited to be our next goalkeeper if de gea leaves? And as a back up? It's easy to pick someone like neuer but I'm talking about people who are realistic.

My choice now would be lloris but he would be very dear, I have a feeling we may target cilleson

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I would suggest Zieler, bringing him back might be a good move, he is under rated in my opinion. The one I think you should have gone and got is Trapp but you left it too late. In my personal opinion I think Johnstone is good enough to be the back up.}

16 Jul 2015 16:26:33

Agree1 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 17:38:20
I wouldn't even be okay with signing Benteke, I'd be gutted if that is what a great club such as ourselves did when we could well get Lewandowski.

Benteke is well suited to a mid table team like Liverpool with a small minded manager who will make a push for the Europa League.

Agree2 Disagree1

16 Jul 2015 18:03:06
There's a rumour down here that Sherwood himself leaked stuff to local papers to press Liverpool into bidding

Agree2 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 18:24:15
Well, obviously the proof of the pudding is in the eating, but I think, compared to Liverpool, we've had a relatively good window so far. I'm not sure what Benteke brings to them that they don't already have in Sturridge, assuming he's fit. Is he supposed to replace Balls on Telly? Are they thinking Benteke will play the combined Sterling Suarez role? If Coutinho, Henderson and Firmino gel, then they could provide plenty chances, given their fast counterattacking style. But on the other hand it could all stall like it did last year against us, and having made little if any improvement in defence, it could also go the other way with inadequate cover for a shaky back 3.

LVG and Rodgers seem to be about as opposite philosophically speaking as could be, but I'd venture to say this is make or break season for both of them.

16 Jul 2015 13:14:58
Ed001,
When you have time, could you tell us how you rate United's four new signings? Input would be greatly appreciated

Believable4 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - Depay I have not seen a lot of, what I have seen suggested he has great potential and could be a real threat, but I would like to see more of him to judge him.
Darmian again I have not seen a lot of, but what I have seen made him look a good full back and you desperately needed a right back. So long as he can stay fit, he should be an immediate upgrade to the first team, whereas Depay might take a while to slot in and make a place his.
Schweinsteiger was a special player and even if he is not the player he was, he should still be able to slot in and provide leadership and experience that was badly missed last season. With Carrick's fitness being so unreliable, he will be essential in my opinion. He might not have the legs to get up and down the pitch as much as he used to, but that is not what you needed when you have players like Herrera and now Schneiderlin. I think he is a good signing.
Schneiderlin I think is the best signing of the lot, for me he was Southampton's standout player of the last few years and the one they will regret losing. He is far more than a player who will sit in front of the defence, he is more of a playmaker who will help out covering defensively. I really like Schneiderlin, get the best out of him and he is a difference maker for you next season.}

16 Jul 2015 14:33:34
Completely agree Ed. Schneiderlin is the smartest signing we've done for years and much like Herrera last year, he isn't a big marquee signing, but will be one of our best.

16 Jul 2015 12:11:38
Hi ed 001 if your about mate I'd just like to know what you think we will do with our goalkeeping situation. Personally I believe that the keeper is the most important player for any team. Looking back on epl history it is very rare that the winners have a suspect keeper even in 1995 Tom flowers played luke a man possessed. Thanks.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - if DDG goes a new first choice and a back up keeper will arrive. If he stays it will just be a back up that comes in. I agree though, a keeper is the most important position in the team. Cofidence flows from a great keeper.}

16 Jul 2015 13:16:06
Thanks ed, I know you feel Liverpool should have gone for a top keeper, personally I like cillessen from Ajax I also think sam Johnston has great potential but needs another season on loan.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 13:29:04
Do you expect Lindegaard to leave Ed? I don't think he's had a game for about 3 years.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he has been surplus for a long time, it is a surprise that he is still there to be perfectly honest. He seems happy to just be at the club, with little ambition to go and get playing time, as he has rejected a few chances to leave. Personally he is likely to at least see out his contract.}

16 Jul 2015 14:28:12
We don't really need a new back up keeper then. If De Gea stays we have Lindegaard and Johnstone which is more than enough, especially given how few games De Gea misses.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 12:20:29
It looks as though we could probably have 4 more players come in yet. Potentially two new keepers if both Valdes and DDG leave. We still want a centre back (Otamendi) and a new striker (Lewandowski).

I think the two I mentioned are at the top of the list for their respective positions. But who knows about the keeper situation. Apparently we inquired for Oblak, that's all I've read recently.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

16 Jul 2015 12:34:11
My preference would be Jasper Cillessen with Johnstone as backup.

Agree0 Disagree2

Why does everyone keep banging on about getting 2 keepers in? Before valdes came we were fine with just lindegaard as back up, and Sam Johnstone has to step up some time, he's 3rd choice as it is.

Agree1 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 13:03:44
I agree Redandy, Lindegaard has always been fine as back up, never moaned to the media, never refused to play, if DDG does go then we just need a new first choice keeper, would blood Johnstone in the league cup this season and see how he gets on.

Oi No.1midfield, he has a very valid question! I'd say he is worth more than Van Persie, but to sell him I think we'd struggle getting more than about £15-20m now, personally.

Agree1 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 14:20:56
From a business point of view, whenever we sell him and whatever we sell him for the fee will probably be pure profit and a fat pay check off the books.

My guess is he's with us until 2019 when his contract expires, unless he really wants to be somewhere else and is prepared to take a pay cut. That's the dilemma LVG faces. He can't really put a 300k a week player on the bench for 4 years. I suppose he could try and do what Monaco have been doing with Falcao to get his salary off the books, but again, why would Rooney do that?

So, at least for this upcoming year Rooney will be given the chance to play in his favorite position. Personally I think he deserves the opportunity to claim his place as United's top goal scorer ever. I hope he makes it and I'm sure he will be going all out to smash the record.

So Schweinsteiger will be the first German first team player. I know we had Ron Zieler in the reserves, but Schweinsteiger will be the first to play for us. Why do you think that is? Over the years there have been some great Germans, some playing in this country from Klinsman, Ballack, Ozil and Didi Hamann, also I liked Ziegler as well for spurs. However, there wasn't any drawn to our great club, I find that strange.

Do you reckon it was weather, wages, content with being at Bayern, Ferguson or just club morale's? I should imagine Louis Van Gaal was a big factor for this transfer though.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

16 Jul 2015 12:37:22
Germans are known to stay within their country or nearby, similar to English players.

I think it's a mixture of that, not targets or not needed at that moment of time. But maybe Fergie just didn't prefer them?

Either way i'm happy we started with our first one being the German Captain, will surely be a pulling point when looking into buying other Germans.

If the reports and interest in Lewandowski are to be true and we do sign him, I can see us being a real force this coming season.

We would undoubtedly have one of the strongest midfields in Europe and possibly one the best attacks too.

I also believe having a player like Lewandowski would compliment Rooney, who I believe only shows his true ability when he has competition, he needs big Robert to be sniffing down his neck to make him perform to his best.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

16 Jul 2015 12:39:16
Not a huge fan of Lewandowski, great goal scorer, but i just don't think he has the physicality for the premiership. I think we need a target man to play at the tip of a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, someone like a Costa. I like Bacca, Cavani has the physicallity but a bit to pricey, Kane was never going to come, but can you imagine the price after City and Sterling! I like Lukaku though but no chance. I really can't see a big name striker coming in while Rooney is still there and i don't think he will be leaving any time soon.

May I ask why you think we have one of the strongest midfields in Europe? don't get me wrong i'm excited and can't wait for the season to begin, i also think we could do well in the league, but Europe is a dream for me. When you think Carrick has not played in the competition for a year and is getting on, Schneirderlin has not played in it before, Schweinsteiger being sold by a club with a fantastic midfield, Felliani will probably push up top, Herrera, who i love btw, has not played in the top tier European competition and well Young and Valencia. Maybe we should be a bit reserved with Europe, the league maybe, Europe no.

I'm not trying to be a pleb, but i'm still a bit reserved about Europe, however i think Louis Van Gaal's system could work well in the competition though.

I disagree about Lewandowski, I think he is the perfect fit for this league. He has pace, strength and the technique needed to play in the premier league. He would do amazing for us!

Well when you look at all the elite clubs midfielders such as Bayern, Barca, Madrid, the players we have can be as good as their respective opposites.

For example let's look at Barca.

DM: Sergio. We have Schneiderlin, Carrick and Blind. I believe Carrick is as good passing and defensive wise but is much slower. Schneiderlin on the other hand has the potential to be much better IMO.

CM's: Iniesta and Rakatic. We have Schweinsteiger, Herrera and Fellaini. Now I know these are all different players but but all are equals in ability and can compete well against eachother.

Finally CAM's: Barca have the likes of Messi and recently Turan. Where as we have Mata, Di Maria (if he stays) and Rooney. On that basis we have as good of a midfield as the European Champions now.

Lets just hope we have a good pre-season and we can see if these players are as good as I am making them out to be.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 15:11:19
I appreciate what your saying Weggy, I really like our midfield and the fact we have a very diverse set of players. However, I will wait to see them play against these elite teams before I say we have one of the best midfields in Europe. They all have immense skill, but have yet to play with each other, that coupled with our a main midfield recruit yet to play in the champions league. I would rather be pleasantly surprised in Europe, than disappointed. let's conquer England before Europe.

Agree0 Disagree1

16 Jul 2015 15:47:37
I totally agree, we should focus on the league and make sure we're the best team in England before Europe.

I see you points and I guess on paper it looks like one of the best midfields in Europe but as you say, we can't really judge until we've seen them play together.

Hopefully the players gel well together and we have a strong foundation in the midfield for many more years!

Benteke to United? No.
Benzema to United? No.
Lewandowski to United? Chance.
Di Maria to leave? Likely.
De Gea to leave? Hope not.
Otamendi? Very likely.

So many unanswered questions, just when you think Uniteds business is all so easy and almost concluded, more questions get thrown out there! These questions can only be answered by the end of the window. That's what I think of the questions, what do you guys think?

If, as looks likely given Ramos been using us for a better contract, we sign Otamendi, who do people see as our first choice CB pairing?

While we know LvG likes Smalling, I think he'll go for Otamendi (right-footed) next to Rojo (left-footed). Plus, both Argies who know each other well, seem like good mates and both a bit feisty, taking no prisoners. Would maybe be like Vidic and Shawcross together? Though maybe have to watch the yellow cards.

Can also imagine a bit of banter with Big Bastian in front of them, with Schweinie turning round and snapping at them: "Achten und konzentriert zu bleiben! Wer gewann den World Cup, chaps?"

Believable0 Unbelievable1

I really don't think Ramos is. I believe Ramos actually wants to move. I just don't believe that Real will let him leave unless we offer ridiculous money and for a 29 year old I don't think we will.

Otamendi would be a great signing and I think LVG will pair Smalling with him. Smalling came on leaps and bounds towards the end of last year and really stepped as LVG had said. So I think he will be given the chance.

The whole Valdes thing gets more bizarre, he has tweeted photos of the 3 under 21's games he played last season, so there seems some disagreement from him. Do any of the eds have any ideas on what the hell has happened? LVG says he refused to play but he did play a few games. I'm confused!

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - I am confused now. I assumed this was a recent thing because the only games he missed that he was asked to play for United, at any level, were before he got a contract. Since getting a contract he has made himself available as specified in his deal. So I was assuming this was since he came back from turning down Anatolyaspor, but it seems I am incorrect in that assumption. In which case, Valdes' contract specifies he would have to be available for U21 duty if called upon, he would not have been able to just refuse and the club would certainly not have just ignored it back then if it had happened. This seems to just an excuse for moving him out.}

Banter please Eds!

Not directly United rated but, with the new season approaching, I'm starting to think again about my weekly accumulator strategy. I came out of last season about even but wondering if any posters have any tips for better results.

I generally do two accumulators each week:

1. After looking at results of 5 previous games (nip into newsagents every Tuesday to look at respective paper's football predictions and take a cheeky photo on the phone) I pick 5 or 6 pretty safe home games ( ie Real Madrid, Bayern, Barca etc) This then mostly covers the cost of placing the two bets.

2. Second bet is more speculative and takes into account form, home/away, injuries etc. usually lose this one though, when it wins, gets a couple of hundred pounds.

Just wondering what other strategies people might have? Noticed that there's a Betting talk site on the "talk sites" drop down menu on here - any good?

It just seems a bit strange to admit your 2nd choice keeper is leaving with all the news of your 1st choice going as well. Surely any team we approached for a keeper would just bend us over a barrel knowing how desperate we were with Lindegaard as our only GK for the new season (Who I don't rate at all). I could have got this completely wrong, but I'm just after some other opinions.

I can't see De Gae staying, I think it shows nobody is going to get an easy ride and players shape up and fit in or they are gone. This is exactly what we need, the squad needed a major shake up, the weak areas are being addressed and ageing player + wage bill being addressed.

Like him or hate him LVG is making the hard decisions and they appear to be in the interest of the team rather than individuals.

I completely agree with LVG showing that if you don't agree with him and do as he says then there's the door. A manager should run the team not the other way around. A couple of funny true stories from Ed002 on the Liverpool page about footballers :-

{(a) a Premier League player who couldn't drive had his agent organise the purchase of an expensive car that was rolled out of the garage when he was visited by the press etc. for interviews, demanded the car was replaced a year later with the latest model in a different colour. He still couldn't drive - but it was image. It had a couple of hundred miles on the clock.

(b) a northern-based Premier League player who had put clothes in a washing machine but had no idea how to turn it on repeatedly rang his agent in the South East for instructions on how to use it. This was eventually solved by the agent persuading someone at the Worsley Park Marriott to send a housekeeper (or similar member of staff) around to his house to do his washing and instruct him and his girlfriend in the use of the machine. I will say that both players involved are English.}

Think LVG is making it very clear that no one is indispensable, no one is bigger than the club and friendship lends no favour. This is the take no prisoners attitude that might scare off some potential (pay day) signings but should separate winners from passengers.

No mockers on it, but we know what happened the last time we had a gaffer this ruthless.

Would like to know peoples opinions on something with LVG and the way he answers questions from the media.

Tonight, when he says under duress "yes" to selling valdes as if the press managed to squeeze it out of him with needles. Do you believe he orchestrates the whole thing or gets tongue tied. Most managers would say valdes is sick and di maria is tired from copa america but he really spins a story and appears to say more than he should. he does this quite a bit and sometimes the line between madness and genius gets blurred. I personally believe every word he utters is calculated in line with an agenda but I've also heard the opposite opinion. You would have to assume valdes is worth nothing right now (unless a deal is already done) and Di Maria just got devalued (unless something in the background already)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

16 Jul 2015 07:58:21
Dissapointed that Valdes will leave as he was a goodbackup, seemed a decent guy with fall back that what ready made replacemen't for Ddg.

Lvg was very clear in his press conference that every player must prove himself and fight for his place in the team. If he signs a striker Rooney will find this out if he is being outperformed and that is how it should be. Personally I don't think that any more than 5 players will start more than 35 games in a probable 55 game season

Believable0 Unbelievable0

16 Jul 2015 01:03:00

When a manager picks a Captain, typically he stays captain until he leaves the club. Does LVG have a history of working the captaincy this way or does Rooney have to prove that worthiness also.

Agree0 Disagree0

If he was part of the British athletics or cycling squad he would have been booted out and they are the most successful sports in Britain right now, in terms of achievement. Dave Brailsford would not put up with the kind of stuff footballers in general get up to every week. You are expected to be professional and that is why they can compete properly against the best in the world on a consistent basis and produce their best on a regular basis. Sad thing is footballers are paid many times the amount people like Chris Hoy earnt, yet they do far less for their money.}

16 Jul 2015 09:31:40

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 09:49:54
Ed001,

But 75000 people aren't paying £40-£50 to go and watch Chris Hoy cycle every week, there is a reason footballers get paid so much money, because the clubs can afford to do it.

I agree Rooney should be fitter though, but he has got away with it for so long I doubt he will change now.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I don't argue that they get the money because of that, what I am disputing is the attitude of footballers thinking they don't have to earn that money just because so many people are watching them. If Chris Hoy can take the time to live a life designed to get maximum performance every time he competes, then why can't a footballer earning over a 100k a week? Or any professional footballer for that matter. They are robbing the fans of that money as they are not doing all they can to earn it. You only have to look at the career Pavel Nedved had, he was not the best player in his age group when younger, he just lived correctly and trained harder and longer than the rest. Instead we get drunken imbeciles falling out of clubs for 200k a week and millions in signing fees who will never reach their potential because of their own failings.}

The tour de France pulls in great crowds, the go through small towns and the crowds on the roads are 10 deep in places. And those boys work hard.

Hoy was a great competitor, so was Wiggins and guys like Froome and Cavendish. Not to mention the ladies team at the Olympics. If more sportsmen had the same attitude we would win more stuff.
