I think Arsenal and Tottenham will be teams to miss out on Champions League this year Arsenal have a weak centre and a leaky defence and Tottenham haven't got that killer instinct up front the Arsenal defence is weak weaker than ours when 3 players are injured the are spread thin where they have 3 centre halfs we have 5 three left backs and 4 right backs if you include Jones and Smalling there midfield is better but our forward line is spectacular

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Personally think itll be liverpool. wenger knows how to play the game and is good at getting results. liverpool don't look the same team since suarez left and they don't seem to have the same desire as last yr

I would be very surprised if Arsenal missed out on CL. I think 2 of us, Liverpool, or Spurs will miss out on that last spot.

Sorry trumour, will admit being a biased lfc fan and honestly think injuries may decide 4th between us united and arsenal. Will admit arsenal probably have the better starting XI and probably better star players. BUT Wenger is good at getting results!!? Knows how to play the game!? Don't get wrong respect he tries to at the game properly BUT has shown over the years an inept ability to change tactics against teams or to adapt and play differently to get a result or win games. 8-2 to united, 4-0 down at anfield in 20 minutes, or 6-3 to city last season. he'll their 4 all draw against spurs have predominantly down to him not changing tactics or knowing how to win games, would have won a CL final if he did!

Agree3 Disagree3

Before we signed Di Maria, Blind and Falcao I felt that it would be very close between us, Liverpool and Arsenal for third and fourth. Now I expect we'll finish third (second if we're lucky) and it will be between Liverpool and Arsenal for fourth spot. My gut says Arsenal will pip them - but it will be close.

Agree3 Disagree1

Without Di Maria, Blind and Falcao I would of said 4th would be a struggle. Right now I think 2nd or 3rd is a realistic target. Chelsea do still look the best team, City look fairly good too. Arsenal's defence is a huge issue for them and Liverpool don't have that 'frightening' player anymore.

On paper, we have one of the best starting XI's, it depends what LVG gets out of them and it also depends on how good Chelsea are / how fit Costa stays. They already have a huge lead.

thoughts pls. do people reckon strootman is needed? if he comes where does blind play? he's best at cdm and seems to never get injured. don't want him at lb as shaw should play there and rojo and jones should be x cb

Believable3 Unbelievable0

For the first 11 maybe not but yes for strengh in depth.
Good headache for LVG, who's first choice Strootman or Blind.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not sure that question could be answered right away but given Carrick's age and injury, the level of Fletcher's performances, Cleverley's hopefully imminent departure, and Anderson's well. CM is not necessarily a position we're loaded with quality in. Add Strootman to Herrera, Blind, Di Maria when he plays there and we have good options to deal with fixture congestion and injuries.

Agree1 Disagree0

Adding Strootman will give Van Gaal the strength in CM that youneed to compete on multiple fronts. It will also allow him to mix the team up and where appropriate push Di marea further forward either in the Mata role or attacking winger in a 433.
Surely we would all want the midfield options of Blind/Harera/Strootman/Di marea with fletcher and supporting whenneeded.

Agree0 Disagree0

There are better players out there - but he's a slight improvement over Blind.

Agree0 Disagree2

Thanks for the opinions lads! much appreciated

Agree2 Disagree0

Herrera, Blind, Strootman, Di Maria, Carrick and Pereira are a good set of options to have for those central three positions.

Today we will look at the mindset of Daveyboyboy Blue and his "trolling", "wumming" or "fishing".

Daveyboyboy Blue: Hey guys, look how stupid I am hrrrrrrr drrrrrrrrr hrrrrrrrrrr!

Us: WTF. You're an person.

Daveyboyboy Blue: The joke's on you guys, I was only pretending.

That sums up the post further down the page.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

I would like to ask Daveyboy what he thinks of Everton's piss poor defence this season? How many goals gave they conceded already? 10 is it?

Why was Anderson smiling so much in yesterday's game? I mean after every goal he was there celebrating and enjoying the game.

I almost feel a bit sympathetic towards him now. :P

Believable2 Unbelievable2

He always plays with a smile on his face, we changed the way he played football, maybe for the worst, but he's the one who let himself get unfit and out of shape, shame really, looked like an immense talent a few years ago.

Agree2 Disagree0

Perhaps it was because his team was winning. Should he have acted differently when we scored? Perhaps he could have climbed up into the stands with the Sunderland fans and booed?

Agree5 Disagree1

R7 I mean he's clearly not in a place he imagined he would be at this point in his career.

No player would want to play in the reserves after having played an won he Champions League and the Premier League(whose ever fault it might have been)

He knows he's going to leave. No teams would send scouts to watch him in reserves so these performances aren't really helping him secure a transfer. He is going to get the same wages irrespective of whether he plays or not. Inspite of this he's playing with a smile on his face that's what's making me feel a bit sympathetic towards him.

Agree3 Disagree1

Sympathy is admirable but he's well compensated enough not to need it.

ED I had sent through a post yesterday regarding Ronaldo transfer and the possible scenario in which that would be possible.

It was posted on "Other Posts" for few minutes but was taken off later. Was it offensive/inappropriate in some way?

If not, I request you to please post it on banter site. Thanks.

Brilliant to see the site so positive at the moment and what a fantastic and exciting time to be a United fan, I just wanted to ask opinions on something and see what people think.

My question is simply 'why now?'.

In other words, why now have the Glazers suddenly decided to spend huge and buy the best players in the world. Is it because they have seen the slide and realised the club needed major investment? If so, does that mean once the investment has been made, do they let the club do the same again, get worse and worse until again another major investment in 4-5 years time?

Could it be that the Glazers want the club in the best possible position to sell it in 2 years time?

4 weeks ago everybody, myself included, thought that United could be on a downward spiral, there was paper talk of LVG being upset with Ed Woodward and wanting out already. There were fans from other clubs on here telling us how bad we are and that we have 'had our time'. Now most people think United will finish top 4 because of the amazing spend we just had and there is a distinct lack of other teams fans on the page making any valid points about why United will fail.

There may just be an extremely simple answer, and my opinion is that they have panicked because of last season and realised we need to be in the Champions League / winning titles in order to get the most money for themselves, which actually suits us as well.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

I think you've already answered your question. From a financial point of view finishing outside of the top four this season isn't an option. The Glazers spent accordingly.

I get the impression that there was always money available if the manager had asked for it. The talk is that Bale and Ronaldo were being targeted under Moyes and the £65m net spend under him was more than any other season prior to this one. SAF always maintained that money was there if he asked for it - and in Moyes and LVG we have/had managers who asked.

Agree1 Disagree0

I have to say GDS2 I enjoyed your post. I think a lot of fans would have come on for a couple of reasons.
1) Apart from last season and a few outrageous results from cup competitions etc most of us haven't had much chance for a bit of proper banter in recent times lol.
2) You had a fantastic pre-season and everyone on here was predicting 18 points from 18 when the fixtures were announced for your 1st 6 games. The MK Dons game was kind of the icing on the cake for most football fans apart from Utd guys obviously.
I think given your easy fixtures( at least on paper) and positive Summer even LVG and the most ardent Utd Fan would have been taken aback by the start you had.
I think the QPR game was the perfect game at the right time for you. Not a criticism but let's not forget Spurs hammered them 4-0 also and there wasn't the same media frenzy that followed with player cams etc.
Sterner tests I'm sure are to follow, but what I would say is enjoy the good result and performance and hope for more of the same to come.
Even as a rival fan I have to say I enjoyed it and I'm sure plenty of other ABU's did too, though they'll not likely admit it ha ha ha.
Good Luck for the season mate ;-)

Agree5 Disagree1

Gotta spend money to make money. invest now make more profit over the next few years

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Sep 2014 18:15:26
So basically if fergie hadn't have won things this big spend would have come 5 years ago?

Agree1 Disagree0

IMO, its simply because they realised how bad we could get.

I think they thought Moyes would achieve acceptable results with little to no money (top 4). Then, I think they thought LVG with a couple of signings, would get top 4. Personally, I think the Swansea game was the real jaw-dropper, the 90mins that convinced the board (as well as LVG surely having a stern word) that unless we spent, another mediocre season would follow.

Agree0 Disagree0

Did'nt Daddy Glazer pass away.
Just a thouight, shackles off.

Agree0 Disagree0

GDS2 - If you believe some of the stuff on here SAF had lined up Thiago, Strootman, Garay and Ronaldo to be signed at the beginning of last season. One suspects we'd have paid £100m+ for them. At the end of the day SAF just kept on winning with the squad he had - so it's hard to make the argument that funds weren't available to him.

All this talk about Ronaldo's return seems to have come up due to United's recent transfer activity and the players we have been able to sign this window.

The priority for United now, would be to acquire a strong experienced CB and a CM in the next window and finish in the top 4. Once it is achieved and surplus players are moved on, then maybe we can target another winger like Reus and have a squad strong enough for the title and champions league.

If Ronaldo really wants to return and United want him back then I guess one of the high earners need to go - one of Mata, Falcao(if it doesn't work out) or even RVP(given his age/performances of late).

LVG right now is doing the right thing by improving the quality of the first team and once that is done and our first team ensures our stay at the top, then he would be able to concentrate more on youth development which is essential for the future of the club.

Hope we sort out our problem areas in our next window and until then our new signings can help propel United to the top of the table.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

16 Sep 2014 13:41:52
I think it would be a mistake to get rid of Mata on £140k per week approximately would much prefer to see Young leave which would free up £120k. Falcao isn't a permanent fixture yet but if he is made permanent and judging from the way the front players operated on Sunday pulling into wide positions when the opposition was in possession, Ronaldo would have to play right up top and I think RVP would have to be the one to make way for this.

Agree1 Disagree0

I think in all honesty, RVP will be the one to drop out. He is ageing and seems to be permanently struggling with an injury - I don't think playing throughout the summer with Holland has helped matters.

Agree1 Disagree0

People questioning whether signing Ronaldo at 30 would be wise should remember that he is only one year older than Falcao and would likely cost a similar amount in both wages and transfer fee.

I'd be surprised if we signed Falcao and Ronaldo next summer but if Falcao were to move to RM or go back to Monaco then financially speaking Ronaldo might be in budget.

The result against QPR was a welcome one after the slow start to the season. It's just a start but, a very good one and hope we can build on that.

The new signings did pretty well. Good games for Blind, Herrera - kept the game moving and got some tackles in, when needed. The defence not tested much but, Rojo looked calm and composed on the ball.

Rafael had a decent game - hope he stays injury-free. Blackett kept his place and looks very comfortable on the ball and can only get better. Rooney did his bit with a goal and an assist, Mata got a goal. Di-Maria was the spark that United have been lacking for so long - fantastic game all round and some sublime passes and was involved in all the goals.

And except for RVP's performance, a few sloppy passes from Evans and the odd mistake from DeGea/Rojo, everything else worked out perfectly.
A Falcao goal would have been the "Icing on the cake".

16 Sep 2014 11:22:23
Just a thought before you guys start getting carried away following your win against the might of QPR on Sunday. How the hell are you going to be able to accommodate Fellaini into your midfield once he's fit again? Will he replace Mata, Rooney or Herrera in midfield? After all you don't spend the best part of £28m and expect him to sitting on the bench? Surely not!

Believable0 Unbelievable16

We're not a small club like Everton 28 m down the drain and spend 150+m in the summer. So big hair can play under21s or yous.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Sep 2014 11:47:29

Moyes spent 28 mill on him not LVG. Does he deserve automatic selection in your eyes Daveyboy?

Agree1 Disagree0

16 Sep 2014 11:55:40
Hahaha is that honestly the best u have got!!! Bless ya

Agree5 Disagree0

I think you should worry about your own loan stars who may not ever get ti wear that blue shirt.

For Fellaini, I am sure he will play better than the last year under LVG, we will see him causing havoc again.

Agree2 Disagree1

Just realized you are not one of Roman's, still if you are so much worried about the wig, will you care for resign him for same price ;)

Agree1 Disagree0

The same Fellaini who was Everton's best player for what? Four years? Who was also coincidentally bought by Everton's best manager of the modern era who also took the chance anyone would by leaving to join United. It hasn't worked out for him at United, these things happen. It doesn't make him a bad player. Most of us knew he would never be a success as a Manchester United player, it's difficult coming from a small club where fifth place is deemed a success to the biggest club in the world.

Agree5 Disagree0

You're so ungrateful these days blueboy. We take your 'mediocre' manager off your hands, then give your club £27.5M and then to top it off, 2 weeks ago you didn't have the decency to take our Tom off our books !

Agree1 Disagree0

Daveyboy, Fellaini is not Blind. He knows where he stands and at the moment, even a Blind can play better than him.

Hope you guys love charity - 28m, thanks to one Mr. Moyes.

Feel for Fellaini however, has not worked out for him - right place, wrong time. Hope he can revive his career.

Agree1 Disagree0

Oh dear I appear to have touched a raw nerve once again. Put it this way, you were welcome to both Moyes and Fellaini last year. We now have a much more progressive manager in Martinez, £28m in the bank, home and away wins last season against yous and European football to look forward to this season. So Emmerdale and Coronation Street it is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to watch and the M6/M1/M40 will be empty between Manchester and London

When everybody rips you apart when you right a post you cannot come back on and say you 'touched a raw nerve'. People responded but mainly in pity to laugh at how ludicrous your post was, do you think you would anyone up? It will take a lot more than that this week!

Agree2 Disagree0

28m in the bank in which you spent on a player who's using you as a stepping stone, maybe if you squeeze into the champions league (doubtful) in the next few years he might score against you and not celebrate.

Agree1 Disagree0

16 Sep 2014 16:46:29
Fellaini and Moyes were both a mistake. Just because he cost £28m in a panic buy does not mean he has to play this season. I don't know whether you're just trying to wind people up or if you're just a little bit lacking in the head.

16 Sep 2014 10:04:07
I honestly cannot understand why people are saying that they don't want Ronaldo. Firstly, I don't think the money side of things is an issue, £60 million is well within our reach as has been proved by the Di Maria deal. And it is clear that LVG won't stop spending until his team is perfect. Realistically, we all expect to see Strootman in a red shirt come January, that would be our centre midfield topped up nicely. The only other area of need would be centre back where Hummels still appears to be the one that LVG wants - that too could also happen in January as we aren't in the CL so it will make no difference to us whether we sign him in January or July as he won't be cup tied.

What I am getting at is that we may come to next summer and our squad is 'complete' other than getting rid of some players permanently like Anderson, Nani, Cleverley, Zaha, Hernandez etc. So Ronaldo may be the deal that we can afford to work on all summer.

He would be the best signing we could possibly make. Stick him into the team with Di Maria, Falcao, Rooney, Mata, Januzaj etc and we would be unstoppable and easily have the best team in the world.

Believable1 Unbelievable4

{Ed002's Note - You have very naïve views on money.}

Ronaldo is a great player and its a shame he decided to spend the best years of his career at madrid, although it was his dream club.
We could of done with him over the last few years the question is do we need him now?
Buy a top cb a top cm and i think we will be a very good team .
Give adan a chance imo.

Ronaldo is a top player but that ship has sailed imo

Agree5 Disagree0

He's left it 1 year too late if you ask me.

Agree4 Disagree0

Anon
He got himself a big new contract last season so next season at 30 is prob his last chance of another mega contract.
United have started to splash the cash so for ronaldo its prob perfect timing

Agree0 Disagree0

I can understand both sides of the Cristiano Ronaldo argument.

He will be 30 by the time we potentially sign him in the summer. I always find that a winger, particularly one with pace like Ronaldo has, is usually past their best by 31 give or take a year. So that would give us one world-class year.

However, Ronaldo is clearly not your average winger. Or man. He is a machine plain and simple. Many say he is the best pure ATHLETE in the world. That is incredible for a footballer. He is the best player in the world and still will be come summer 2015. He could also reinvent himself as a number 9 quite easily. He has all the attributes.

There is also the argument regarding whether or not it is a sentimental decision. Make no mistake, we would all love to get Ronnie back, he is a legend for this club and we are proud to have had him because he has continued to show the club respect. But we are currently in the market for the best players in the world, Di Maria and Falcao proved that. There is nobody better at this moment than Cristiano for me. So sentiment or not, he would be a great signing who would walk into any team in the world.

This is not a guy who was an average player but a fan favourite who's available on a free and we're bringing back just to get an ovation. He is and will be for many years one of the very best.

Januzaj scored a hatrick for the under 21s against Sunderland. Andreas pariera scored too in the 4-0 victory in which shaw and anderson also started. Lvg and giggs watched the match. Apparently the best player was pariera.

With all the talk of Ronaldo coming back, it would be interesting to see what happens to these two regardless of ronaldo's return.

I watched it last night. Young Perreira was a pretty confident lad before, but even more so, now he's had a sniff of the first team. Always looking to pull the strings and get on the ball. I know it was Sunderland kids, but he really impressed me last night. More than usual. Adnan was class and young Harrop looks more promising every time I watch him.

Agree6 Disagree0

16 Sep 2014 09:25:01
Stevie,

I watched the game last night as well and agree with your assessment. Perreira looked like a player brimming with confidence, trying new things, he even through a Maradone turn in at one point. Going to be keeping an eye on him, as LVG appears to be doing also.

Shaw was fantastic in the first half, his cross for Perreira's goal really summed him up, almost every cross he tries to pick out a man, not hit and hope Valencia type crosses, and he will chip in with a lot of assists this season.

Harrop impressed me too, have to admit this is the first time I have seen him play a full game, and he looked very good at times, still a few mistakes in there but what you would expect from a very young player.

Januzaj was evidently a class above that level and 3 goals will do his confidence no harm, the young Sunderland defenders didn't have a clue how to deal with him to a point where it was a bit unfair!

I think the less said about Anderson the better, although he does now have a shaved head.

Agree2 Disagree0

Januzaj and Pereira have bright futures. The squad will be trimmed even more in the new year which will push players like Pereira closer to the first team.

As for Januzaj, he won't have any problems getting into the team. He is adaptable too which will mean that he will play lots of games in numerous positions - I have no worries about him and I am sure that LVG knows just how good he is.

This Ronaldo stuff is really hotting up though, everyone is having their say and by all accounts tend to agree that it is going to happen. Ronaldo, Falcao and Rooney as a front three next year? That is the way it is looking.

Agree0 Disagree0

Fresh
Did you not think rooney would behind welbeck in the pecking order this year ?
