I am getting very frustrated with LVG, with all his talk of the system and extra training (which is adding to the injuries) but on the pitch we are still slow in possession. The system was going to be all about closing down and fast possession football, he said we were not fit enough but now things are still slow and there is no closing down. We are dominating possession but end product is still very poor. I feel the whole issue of three at the back and slow football is the reason our game is so poor. We all can see that four at is working better he has the raw materials but won't implement them. Frustrated fan!!

Believable5 Unbelievable0

Nothing will improve until we buy a top class center back as then he will feel less exposed at the bank. I can understand why anyone would feel exposed if Evans was in the side.

It is plain to see lvg does not trust the defensive players. That's the reason for extra man at the back. He does not want to play like this but at the beginning of the season when he tried we gave up to many chances.

Agree3 Disagree0

We are in the same boat as Holland. Vlaar, Indi and De Vrij weren't trusted that is why they all played. He also played Robben like he is playing Di Maria. Parallels can be drawn.

Thoughts on Falcao:
I thought he did all the right things once again yesterday, shame he didn't score. He has great positional sense and movement. He hols the ball up very well despite his size. He can create, more so that Rooney or Van Persie. And he plays with a humility and a passion. He never saunters around like a prima donna and he is delighted whenever he or his teammates score.

I always wanted Welbeck to do well, but his positional sense and decision making were often terrible. Rooney can be brilliant one moment, and shocking the next, that is just who he is as a player. He has great ability, but not consistency technically. Van Persie can be very frustrating with what looks like lack of effort at times.

But Falcao always seems to do the right things. His two point blank misses yesterday were really good efforts, in truth. And who else would have even attempted that diving header? We have a player on our hands with world class ability, imagination, and passion. I hope LVG gives him consistent minutes, and I hope the rest of us fans will appreciate what a player we have in El Tigre.

Believable6 Unbelievable0

I agree, Falcao did everything right yesterday. Maybe if he had played last week he would have had that tiny bit of finesse he lacked yesterday in his finishing.

The thought of Wilson, Rooney, ADM & Falcao linking up is mouth watering, but if RVP is fit next week in he will come unfortunately.

Agree4 Disagree0

Falcao was superb unlucky for the shots not going in, he was doing things what others should be doing for him to score.

He chases the balls unlike Van Persie, always is in the right plqce positionally.

Goals will come with games and confidence i hope Van Gaal doesn't pick team on favouritism

Agree3 Disagree0

I for one would be gutted to see us not purchase Falcao and instead get someone like Cavani who does not have as good movement and is very lazy and temperamental.

I may be harping back to the good old days of 2008, but could we not see a revival of the Tevez / Rooney / Ronaldo partnership we saw. Only this time have Falcao, Rooney and Di Maria and if we are lucky Bale too.

It would work beautifully in a 4-4-2.

Agree2 Disagree2

Agree with the Falcao thing.
RVP should not be in the starting 11 till someone is injured.
The trinity of RVP, Rooney and Mata are the players that slow us down and I would be very happy to let atleast 2 of them leave next summer, and replace them with players like Dybala, Lacazette, Depay, Robben etc.

Agree1 Disagree1

Cavani has an excellent work rate, Fresh.

Agree3 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - I don't really know much about players recovery times from serious injuries etc. However, would I be correct in saying Falcao was a) quicker before that injury (ie he had a burst of pace to make that half a yard for a shot) b) is it possible to regain that speed/sharpness back during a proper pre season? Really I'm wondering that if we sign him this summer and he has a good pre season will we have a Falcao that two years ago most considered to be the best striker in the world. Also agree with the likes of Rvp, mata and Rooney restricting our play}

18 Jan 2015 21:33:00
Ed,
Totally agree. If LVG has any sense he needs to look forward and that will mean sacrifice but it shouldn't be Falcao that loses out. We have a headache, and not a good one.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - Ed002 was correct when he said that manutd were panning a rebuild over 2/3 windows. We still have a hell of a lot of improvements to make to the squad. I'm just wondering tho that if we sign falcao does that restrict us elsewhere. There is no doubt in my mind that we need to start looking at replacing RVP though and Wilson isn't ready and Rooney is a big problem still. I still don't think he is a world class striker anymore (and obviously Van Gaal doesn't either) and he isn't a good enough midfielder for a top team especially if LvG wants to play 433 with box to box midfielders. But can the striking position wait another season. Meaning likes of Dybela, lacazette etc move on}

With a full pre season he could be excellent again. We know what he is capable of and we hve seen how excellent how movement is. I think Rooney should play further forward alongside him because they are both 30 goal a season strikers. We just need another quick winger.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - but will he ever be able to regain the speed and sharpness that injury has taken from him. The fella started playing professionally at 13 I think. Maybe his body is wearing down a lot quicker than others ie Owen}

That does remain to be seen and his price is off putting if it is a risk. I would take Lacazette in a heart beat mind. I would also say that Rooney remains an important player and a driving force in the team. Playing just behind te main striker is his position.

Agree0 Disagree0

Im a big fan of falcao and have watched him a lot
physically i don't think he looks any different, he looks to have fully recovered imo. The question is can he get the goal scoring touch back.
I would keep falcao and let rvp go.
Rvp will have 12 month on his contract in the summer so its either sell or give him new fat contract .
Rooney is simple play him as a 10/ ACM.
also Lvg has given no indication he is going to play 4, 3, 3

Agree2 Disagree0

I think I would cry if we let Falcao join a rival. Okay perhaps he's expensive and we should renegotiate his fee, but you can see that he is a goal machine just waiting to explode. I wouldn't mind seeing Wilson and Falcao upfront with Rooney just behind. Di Maria and Herrera in midfield with Carrick sitting at the base of the diamond. Rojo and Jones at CB, Shaw and Rafael as fullbacks.

Agree3 Disagree0

Sydney, that is a very good lineup. We have a few treasures on our hands and need to take advantage of what we have.

JMB - What I want is very simple: the person in charge to learn from any mistakes or in turn good calls he makes. He is not doing that, we have not evolved since he took over, despite many advantages that a Man Utd manager isn't typically afforded:

War Chest, Lack of Fixtures, Free Time to Train, Point to Prove, Fans Tolerance, Low Expectations from Board and Fans (3rd or 4th, what a joke).

I do not expect fluid, intricate football like Chelsea play just yet, I do not expect gung-ho football, or LVG to be winning every game 3-0. I do expect us to lose some games, to have off days and to occasionally get the system wrong, this year is all about learning and trying things, but it is also about applying learnings to perfect things.

I do expect him to adapt his tactics to the teams we play and to be man enough to accept it if he has made a mistake and correct it then and there (rather than just sitting there nonchalantly), certainly for the next game at least. That is what I hate about LVG, his reluctance to make changes because of his ego.

Do you think I am being unfair with my request for a manager to manage situations for the betterment of the team rather than his precious philosophy?

Everyone is different, but LVG is out on his own with his ideas for this job. We are not playing any better than we did against Swansea, and certainly as a whole no better than last season (people will delude themselves that this is better than Moyes, well it isn't). After 7 months I would have expected to see at least some identity, patterns to our play, a bit of team chemistry and fluidity in our attacking play. We play exactly like England, every player needs an extra touch and a second glance to know where our players are, this should be almost instant by now. But we play like strangers, unsure of where they should be or where they should pass the ball. What is going on in training?

I think every Utd fan would expect us to attack teams and not play negative cagey or long ball football, in the hope one of our many superstars pulls a rabbit from the hat - we are better than that and this Man Utd is destroying what the club stands for at the moment.

We are even losing our identity overseas, we did not feature on any of the major TV networks I typically see where we normally are the first on.

Match of the Day we are nowhere near first on anymore. We are boring, negative and most worryingly not learning from any mistakes still.

Simple changes would solve many of our problems, but the manager isn't going to do that because it means he would have to say he was wrong!

Believable9 Unbelievable14

Well, at least the manager is aware of the fans dislike for the system we are currently using. Not sure it will make much difference though.
As GDS pointed out, the manager probably thinks the 3 at the back system makes us stronger defensively, which it probably does. But at the same time, it nullifies the attack.

I would imagine that LVG was told that he needs to get CL football at all costs this season. And that is pretty much what he is trying to do. Thus, he is having to base all his selections with that in the back of his mind. He is opting to play the safer option with more emphasis on defence and ball retention. Also, IMO, we just don't have the personnel to play that system at the moment.
The irony is, the one player that was excelling for us in that system - Ashley Young - is injured, and it is very noticeable.

Whilst I share your frustration, Beast, I can't help but think that after this season, with CL football secured and more top players in the squad, we will see the type of football we all crave. We just might have to be more patient to see it.

Agree1 Disagree0

Fair enough Sam - let's hope next season brings about better football especially if we do secure CL again (seeing us once a week is killing me let alone twice). I just hope our attacking players are still happy in the summer and other talent isn't put off joining. I also hope LVG is prepared to evolve and the board adds a caveat about playing attacking football.

Agree0 Disagree0

He will have to get CL next season as well

I think being first on tv you maybe correct on some stations, but US tv they were the main 3pm yesterday eventhough chelsea are looking like title winners.

Agree0 Disagree0

FZZ - Oh right, I have the TSN stations 1-5 for Canada and the NBC Extra Sports US ones 1-5. Utd weren't on any, (I appreciate there are a lot of different ones). I had to resort to Thai stations to get them. Setanta Ireland didn't have them on either as well as a few other leftfield ones.

The point on the TV was a bit tongue in cheek to be fair because stations will have bought the games well in advance of course. I just think if we continue to be boring, we will lose a lot of interest from the more fickle fans and therefore merchandise/commercial sales potential. Traveling around Asia last year I saw a hell of a lot of Chelsea and City shirts, far less Utd ones than I had just a few years before.

Agree1 Disagree0

18 Jan 2015 18:32:18
Yeah, NBC main channel had it, and setanta nowadays are not doing the big games, i think its due to tv rights but that's another debate for another day.

Hi Guys

Personally I hope the talk that we will use David De Gea in a deal for Gareth Bale is rubbish.IMO David is already in the top 3 keepers in the world and will definitely improve as he is only young for a goal keeper.
LVG keeps saying he only wants top quality at United and David is definitely that so why sell him.
I'm not saying I don't want Bale at the club but not at the expense of probably our best performer.
I'm still not convinced that Victor Valdes has been brought in as a number 2 and there doesn't seem to be any news that Lindegard is moving on.
If we seriously want to be considered as a major force in the next few seasons we MUST keep hold of David De Gea.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

18 Jan 2015 13:59:30
I think 90% of fans don't Bale at the expense of De Gea. We need to pay him what it takes to keep him at the club for a long long time.

Agree3 Disagree0

De Gea should be untouchable, I'd have him on 200k a week contract than Falcao, Rooney or RVP.
The guy is world class.

Agree0 Disagree0

I tend to agree with that but don't necessarily agree on Rooney or Falcao. Rooney is being wasted playing in midfield and that is the managers fault.

I think we may have seen van Gaal reach peak twaddle. Everyone has been questioning his system and arguing that we would be much better served by playing four at the back, but van Gaal's ego couldn't stand giving in to pressure. Then, yesterday, when after an hour of being outplayed by one of the weakest teams in the league, he did what everyone wanted and, surprise surprise, we created more chance and scored two goals.

But LVG wasn't done there. Not by a long shot. It now transpires that he knew all along that playing 4 at the back would yield more chances, but it also makes us unbalanced and vulnerable. I take his point that 5 at the back makes us less vulnerable, the numbers alone make that obvious. But as for balanced! The last few games has seen us consistently fail to create chances and move the ball quickly up the pitch. This is because there playing 5 at the back means far fewer bodies in the opposition half, and less movement and, therefore, less options for incisive passing. 5 at the back leaves us completely unbalanced: for instance, every time our 'wing-backs' get the ball they have to turn back because they have nobody supporting or overlapping them. The fact that van Gaal is still incapable of admitting that his failed system is a failure speaks volumes.

And then we have the Rooney/Di Maria anomaly: the seeming positional contradiction that only van Gaal sees as working. The logic behind this is that Di Maria is faster and has a better chance of getting on the end of long balls over the top. The irony is that if Di Maria was playing in midfield we wouldn't need to be relying on long balls because the ball would be moved more quickly through the middle. The obvious solution is to play Rooney up front with one of Falcao or RVP, with Di Maria behind. But van Gaal seems hell bent on building his United team in the image of his Dutch masterplan, despite the fact that this plan was forced on him through injury. The fact that we are, in van Gaal's own words, setting up our team to protect our defence from the second worst team in the league should be setting off all manner of alarms. If van Gaal doesn't get over himself and admit it isn't working, he won't last the season.

Believable6 Unbelievable1

It looks to me 3, 5, 2 is here to stay .
Its a formation lvg played in his last job and it is a formation he has played from day 1 at united.
Van gaal himself has said it isn't really working and he is not happy with the performances but must think he can get it to work .
So why would he persist trying to get a strategy to work for this season only to change again next and go through the whole process again.
Could the truth be that lvg thinks a slow possesion based tactic is the way to go ?

Agree3 Disagree0

Danny - Perfect summation, this is exactly why I wanted him gone so early on, he will not change. His whole career he has shown he will not change once he has made up his mind - therefore why delay the inevitable. He is going to buy players he thinks will suit his 3-5-2, a formation nobody else would play as Utd manager, so any money he spends could be wasted. He doesn't like Shaw, Herrera or Falcao, he mis-uses ADM, would you spend another £100m on this last hoorah, I wouldn't. LVG doesn't care about Man Utd, he cares about the legacy of his football philosophy and if that fails we will fail with it, so what as far as he is concerned.

Too big a gamble for me - we are at the mercy of an ego maniac the cons far outweigh the pros he brings.

Agree2 Disagree2

My opinion is that van Gaal feels that his genius hasn't been properly appreciated for the last decade, and people lauded his tactics during the World Cup for being smart and innovative. It's obvious that his tactics aren' working for us but he seems to be even more entrenched in sticking to them. I think he's more concerned with making HIS tactics and formation successful than he is with making United successful.

Agree4 Disagree2

Danny

Our defense is not that bad and he is making them look worse by asking them to be playmakers from the back. I would rather defend from the middle of the park with an extra midfielder than at the back with an extra defender.

Agree2 Disagree0

He won't change until we have some reliable defenders.

Agree1 Disagree2

I agree 100% Danny. I was excited about Van Gaal from the start, but I am getting frustrated now. All of us are screaming for this 3-5-2 to be dropped, yet he continues.

Agree1 Disagree1

18 Jan 2015 13:49:42
It really is a strange one because you'd think that due to his ego, he'd want to win, above anything that would be his main goal. He surely knows he'll be more successful playing 4-4-2 with certain players in their strongest positions. Yet he's willing to stick with a tactic and formation that's clearly not working, in the hope to get it working just to prove a point? Doesn't make any sense.

Agree1 Disagree0

The formation is rubbish, the style of play is boring and players don't like it - Di Maria clearly isn't comfortable being played where he is.

Next 3 weeks are quite important given the fixture list and teams involved. I believe we can cement top 4 if we pull our finger out and win the next 3 with 2 being against bottom clubs at home.

Spurs, Liverpool, Arsenal are all going to be dropping points and great opportunity for us to separate as we should have done already and have some breathing room when we have our share of tough fixtures come march/april.

Southhampton look like they have a pretty easy few weeks ahead of them too and should stay up there.

Couldn't agree more. No excuses for not putting some space between ourselves and at least 1 or 2 of the teams you mentioned.

We will win our next few games comfortably . Can see us score a few in the next few games.

I was delighted with our second half performance yesterday just wished falcao had scored yesterday.

Agree0 Disagree0

Westham away and old sam will not be easy and they will bully us in the middle with mata and rooney.

Agree2 Disagree0

Huge result for Arsenal today. Not great for us and looks like it is getting all bunched up for those CL places.

I took an interest in the Argentine forward, Paulo Dybala at Palermo following our link with him recently and Phil Neville's very positive comments on him a couple of months ago. The usual video shows a small but powerful well balanced player especially with the ball at his feet. He has been likened to Aguero and you can see that in him.

His situation is interesting if we are indeed looking at him, for example, he has a Polish passport which helps on the work permit front. I read an fascinating article on him from a couple of months ago, which indicated rumours that the Argentine FA actually discouraged him from signing for Nike sponsored clubs (Inter Milan when he went to Italy) and wanted him to be at an Adidas club.

At a time where we are all arguing over formations Dybala's situation looks one to keep an eye on in summer.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - There has been interest from elsewhere but not MU.}

Thank you Ed, I recall you said interest was from Dortmund and Arsenal to date although they would baulk at the price. I would be interested in your thoughts on whether the rumour about the Argentine FA may prefer their players at Adidas sponsored clubs has any validity?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea what you are talking about - and the Argentinian FA have no control over transfer in Europe.}

I've watched him a few time's and he does look pretty immense. Didn't Phil Neville say remember the name because he's going to be a superstar or something? He does seem to have everything in his locker.

Only what I've heard from a friend at carrington, but there will be no big buys in January! !! Adidas don't want any big signings before the summer when they take over !!!! Just for an example if say "bale" was to be bought in January, think how much nike would make til the rest of the season on shirts and merchandise. . .adidas want the BIG signings and the money will be available for the very best!!!!. . makes sense yes?????

18 Jan 2015 02:42:12
Sorry if it has already been stated but am I the only one who doesn't understand LVG's tactics? Play the exact players needed to play a 4-1-2-1-2 formation in a 3-5-2 formation? Why?

Di Maria clearly works best at the tip of a diamond, and I do not have my coaching badges yet but If I can see it surely LVG can see it. Wilson complements Falcao's style of play. So why not play them together? Surely he has seen them link up in training.

Playing 4 at the back increases numbers in midfield, which also has the probability of increasing numbers in midfield and therefore increasing chances created from midfield yet we play 3 at the back and 2 wide whilst playing Di Maria (Our fastest player) up front in the hope of latching onto long balls. The only plus to this formation. Which sucks players towards the opposition back 3 and leave space beyond opposition defends (back line) for the advancing attacking player (Di Maria, in this case) to run onto long balls. Whilst I may be alone in my views. This is not the United way. This is not the United I grew to love. This is not the United I grew excited to watch. I want attacking, penetrative play.

I am glad of the win today don't get me wrong, but if we continue to play like we have done today I do NOT consider top 4 a guarantee. LVG needs to get his Stuff together and decide on a formation and stick with it. 3-5-2 with our current players does not work.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

18 Jan 2015 06:42:01
Jamax,

If you have read the page at all for the last 3 weeks you would know that you clearly aren't the only one with this opinion.

Lvg played that formation against leicester and despite us playing better we conceded 5. We have now conceded 8 in 13 I think it is, considering how bad people say our defence is that is quite impressive and as lvg said in his press conference he knows we play more attractive football with 4 at the back but also knows we concede more as our defenders aren't good enough.

It is a tricky one, the pressure is so high this season to get top 4 I would rather we made sure we got that not necessarily playing wonderful football if we are guaranteed top signings in the summer and a more expansive and attacking 'united style' next season. But maybe that's just me and I am more patient than others and didn't expect us to suddenly play brolliant attacking football when we haven't for 5 years.

Agree4 Disagree0

18 Jan 2015 09:37:29
Its not just you GDS but I think its just you and me 😊 I don't want to see slow, boring football at all but top 4 is vital this season, the playing style less so Imo. We do need to see signs of improvement in the performance to show signs of what we can expect next season but for me its results first, this year.

A lot are moaning about the playing style, which is fair enough, but would those people be happy with a more attacking style if we finished 5th for instance? Not me, not this season.

Whether or not 3 at the back is the right way to achieve those results is another matter, but LvG seems to think so.

Agree1 Disagree0

We conceded against leicester because blackett had the worse second half performance I've seen in the epl.
I would agree that lvg is taking a defensive stance similar to his munich team, which is strange when you look at our attacking players .
On a different note surprised to see blackett and mcnair are out of contract this summer

Agree1 Disagree0

Hb
The thing is we have the players to play attacking football and still get 3rd.
Are united really about safety first let's aim for 4th .
Also 4th isn't 100% with this style of football .

Agree1 Disagree0

I don't think anyone would swap UCL for attractive football but shouldn't we expect both ? We bought massive attacking quality into club and for the most part they are either on the bench or played out of position.
it is the managers decision making process that I don't understand obviously the pressure to make top 4 is massive but it will be the same for all of the big clubs.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jan 2015 11:23:54
Jred and dean,

I don't disagree with either of you. If I were in charge I would set us up with 4 at the back and more emphasis on attack but who knows, maybe that's why I'm just an armchair manager whilst LvG is a pro. We should definitely expect both results and performance in the medium and long term but for this season, following last seasons shock, regaining our European status is most vital. That's just how I feel, a little defeatist maybe but perhaps my confidence has been rocked by the last 18 months, lol.

I do agree we have the players to set up in a more fluid, attacking formation and would like to see at least glimpses of that between now and the summer. But ultimately if we finish 3rd I will be happy, 4th satisfied.

I genuinely believe that if that happens, we will see a better playing style next season after a few more signings to balance the squad. I can appreciate that some posters will disagree with me there but its all about opinions.

Agree0 Disagree0

HB I agree to an extent I am in no position to question the manager's credentials he was, is and continue to be a top coach which is one of the most perplexing things. The constant use of players in the wrong positions and cautious approach against shall we say "smaller teams" I just cannot understand and I don't think I'm on my own here I would go as far as to say that the majority of fans are now beggining to wonder what his thought process is about(epitomized by the chants yesterday).
I am desperate for us to get back to the top table of football but it seems the principles and history of our playing style is being sacrificed for it and I for one cannot see why we have the weapons to wreak havoc throughout the league but the manager seems reluctant to use them.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jan 2015 13:32:09
Cant disagree with that. The 3 at the back and lack of attacking fluidity are certainly worries for me too. I probably just have a little more patience and faith, rightly or wrongly. I'm expecting good things in the next 5 games though and will be disappointed if we don't win most of those and see a little better performances too.

Let's be honest this performance against QPR wasn't fantastic but it was an improvement on last week. I have said it from the get go that the most important thing this season is getting the results on the board. Whether that is grinding out results or emphatically winning games it makes very little difference this season as long as we get the results which will catapult us back into the Champions League.

We need the European revenue first and foremost so it is imperative that is the sole objective this season. If we want to attract all these worldie players everyone keeps banging on about we need to be in the CL. Di Maria gave a show of good faith coming here last August but not all top players will do the same. I personally think by handing LVG a 3 year contact as opposed to Moyes's 6 year contract the board ultimately see Van Gaal as a short term stop gap to get us back to winning ways and back into the big time.

If the results keep coming we have to stand by LVG for the time being. When the results reflect the average performances then we must take note and look at his future. Let's hope this is the start of a winning streak which will cement our place in the top 4.

Believable15 Unbelievable1

Top post, totally agree.

Agree2 Disagree1

QPR are far inferior to Southampton, and the performance prior to the Evans substitutions was even worse than last week, I didn't think that would be possible. Don't let the fact that we won sugar coat things, it only changed because of the need for us to win (Gung-Ho for LVG) and Evans going off, a monkey could have made that switch, in fact they would have 20 games ago!

I have said before a win is a win, but LVG supporters constantly harp on about progress, progress for me isn't about scraping wins against relegation fodder, its about starting to play with identity and good football. That wasn't on show again, players are all over the place - we paid £60m for one of the worst Strikers I have seen, why the hell is LVG playing ADM out of position, he is not a striker, that was the worst first half of football I have seen?! Why do RVP & Rooney play irrespective of form?

I have realised that LVG's philosophy is the ability for people to kiss his backside, he wants players to all nod along, any that question him or doubt him are moved to the side, dangerous.

This is why he wants Strootman so badly, this will be why he signs yes men with questionable ability next summer for massive fees, he will play people out of position just to get his favourites a game.

I was livid at half time, its the same almost every week. Its a joke, I am actually more frustrated about yesterday than I was against Southampton.

Beast what do you want from this season? A new manager who has been at the club officially for less than 7 months, several new players (many of whom haven't played EPL before) and we are currently perched in the top 4 which is our main objective.

Not everthing was going to come together instantly. Would you rather we played top football and finished 5th this year?

Come on man your smarter than this surely.

I seem to remember fergie got rid of players who disagreed with him. I seem to remember one player became persona non grata after a political discussion where he disagreed with fergies socialist views.

Like I said in an earlier post though, Mr E, Fergie had earned the benefit of doubt from the fans, in any dispute with players, because of his success.

LVG hasn't earned that trust yet.
