If last summer had gone differently and we got morata instead of lukaku, and Chelsea got Lukaku, we could well be in Chelsea's position in the table and they could be in ours. A lot of opinion on the site was split between the two. They have missed costa this season and Lukaku would have done a great job for them in my opinion. He has put away a lot of the chances morata is missing. Morata has scored a few with his head but with our lack of wide play would he have scored as many headers playing for us?
Likewise with Matic and bakayoko, Matic has been great for us this season, I'm glad we signed him instead of bakayoko who we were also linked to last summer, a "younger better matic" lol.

Great Post, and to think he had his bleak form around Xmas, as did most of our team. He's still managed to improve drastically and score important goals. I feel after he broke his duck against the top 6 teams he's been brilliant, and even better news if he's left his fat greedy agent and gone with Jay z's company surely that's only a good thing.

Agree1 Disagree0

If you think Matic has been great for us this season your watching a different game to me. He had a good few games at the start, he’s been poor since November.

Agree5 Disagree11

20 Apr 2018 00:49:58
He said matic did better than batayoko which is true, matic at the beginning of the season alongside pogba looked like the missing piece, obvs that went tits up. Matic has been Jose's boy who can't go wrong but I don't think he's been poor, he's been brilliant at being slightly above average with the odd exceptional game. Herrera in his past two games in a deep role has been impressive and I'd love for him to be given that role against spurs.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed0333's Note - Refrain from using verbiage that may cause offense and some could find homophobic. It’s not the 1980’s anymore.

20 Apr 2018 01:13:19
Stand, I don't know if you go to games or not but Matic is much better than he is given credit for. If we aren't pressing high up the pitch then he can't. When we do he is 20/ 30 yards in their half. He is more than a holding player. When he receives the ball he always looks forward first. More often than not we are static up front so, his passes are either sideways or backwards. he has probably been our most consistant player. Never dynamic or, run a game but, break up play and keep the ball.

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed0333's Note - was he bought to press?

20 Apr 2018 06:31:49
Junctionred most teams walk through our mf like it doesn't exist, you could say that happens due to pogba being lazy but even against Brighton with a 3 man mf opposition still easily run through us, if matic is supposed to be protecting the defense then isn't doing a good job of it.

Agree1 Disagree1

20 Apr 2018 07:39:51
Dodged a bullet with morata really don't get the hype around him other than he played for Madrid.
11 league goals this season to go with the 7 and 8 he scored in 2 seasons at juve .
Matic has done well for United but I'm not sure he is the right player for us . Sits deep and starts a lot of the attacks but he sets the tempo from that position and it's very slow .
There is also not another team in the league that has such an exposed CB. Every time a team goes forward against us they get as far as our back line .
It makes me laugh when people say we don't attack because Jose wants to protect the back 4 . It's the most exposed back line in the league.

Agree2 Disagree2

20 Apr 2018 07:44:11
Its not down to Matic, overall our players do not press.

Matic won't do it alone, if its Mou tactics I don't know.

Without the ball players look lazy and lack desire to win it back.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Apr 2018 08:20:25
Totally agree on Lukaku. I never understood why some posters started attacking him.
Jred and Kennedy have hit the nail on the head and it is something I've been banging on for some time. Our midfield is non existent and we don't work anywhere near hard enough when we lose the ball. Pressing the opposition does not exist in Mourinho's vocabulary. Also, in order to press, you need a mixture of small athletic midfielders to go along players like Matic. Unfortunately, Mourinho is only interested in playing tall big players. that's why our midfield looks so rigid. Our back 4 are constanrly exposed due to this error in tactics. If we had players like thiago, isco, veratti and herrera playing, we'll be a lot more combative in midfield.

Agree1 Disagree1

20 Apr 2018 12:50:59
You can't defend with players like Jones and smalling that is the reason why our midfielder can't attack and go gungho style. Not saying Matic is slow or is the best aeound but the blame has to be based on our defenders who are absolutely brainless.

Agree0 Disagree2

20 Apr 2018 13:20:39
Singh . He had last summer smalling, Jones, tfm, tuanzebe, rojo, blind plus two centre Half's he actually bought himself for big money bailey and lindelehoff . Whatever you or I think of people like smalling Jose given all those choices has decided smalling has been his go to centre half . I get that people don't rate smalling but he isn't selecting the team and picking himself . Jose given free choice of those players selects him . People then imply what chance has Jose got to play more attacking when people like smalling play but then gloss over he has had lots of other options including players bought to replace the likes of him . I know Bailly has had injuries but Jose has had lots of other options.

Agree4 Disagree1

20 Apr 2018 14:02:31
Smalling is picked week in week out by Jose he his Jose first choice cb.
Jose has said Valencia start tomorrow again his captain and first choice rb.
An area we are not looking to strengthen.

That's not the reason Jose isn't going gungho style it's also not the reason some of our cm aren't playing well.

Agree3 Disagree0

20 Apr 2018 18:44:56
Id actually say Jones is more his cup of tea except he's always injured.

Agree1 Disagree0

20 Apr 2018 19:12:45
And that is why smalling and jones are up for sale. Maybe smalling plays because he's in the shop window.

Agree0 Disagree1

20 Apr 2018 19:13:43
We are after a lb and maybe because we can't buy all thr players we want this window that is the reasson Valencia isn't to be replaced. If Mourinho had the chance he would rip thr whole defence up.

Agree0 Disagree1

20 Apr 2018 19:32:28
Singh
Would Jose or you? Jose bought 2 cbs smalling still get pick before him .
Valencia his captain plays when fit and is no where near as bad as you and others make out .

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Apr 2018 19:51:43
Ok Singh you feel then that utd can't attack much because smalling and Jones at the back don't allow this so Jose has spent the full season handicapping himself by picking them infront of all the other options and forcing himself into being more defensive than he wants to be in order to put them in the shop window . While taking a completely different method on other players he may wish to sell like darmian, Shaw and blind .

Outfield players only matic and lukaku have played more than smalling .

So in January we went out and took a key player from one of our top six rivals. The 29 year old winger Alexis Sanchez. However, we were also linked with another 29 year old winger from a top six rivals, that being Willian of Chelsea.

Considering everything we know about Alexis struggles to settle, Willian's good relationship with Mourinho and his clear understanding of what Jose wants would it be fair to say that Willian may have been the better player to sign in January?

He likes to play off of the right hand side which is where we are weakest, he also wouldn't have to adapt to Mourinho so would have made a bigger impact sooner, which is what your looking for from a January signing. I have no doubt Alexis is the more talent player, I just feel Willian is a better fit for what Mourinho is trying to accomplish.

So Willian or Sanchez? Who would have been the better signing?

Believable4 Unbelievable2

19 Apr 2018 17:53:07
I don't think anybody could have suspected Sanchez would be this bad. Sanchez is a better player than Willian - most of our top players have been very hit and miss for years I put very little stock in what Jose does with them, we lack consistency everywhere so Willian may have been better but so could Mick the Plumber from the Horse and Jockey - there is a pattern with creative attacking players and our club under these negative managers we seem to hire.

99% of people would pick Sanchez over Willian with all things being equal imo mate - but I think we could have Messi playing for us and he would look rank average most games.

Agree4 Disagree6

19 Apr 2018 19:15:37
I have no idea why we signed Sanchez, but I can guess.

1. He was effectively free
2. He is a top class player
3. City wanted him.

However, did we need him or is holding back the development of others; did we have other positions in more need of strengthening?

A strange one to me.

Agree6 Disagree2

19 Apr 2018 21:03:30
Sanchez better then all the wingers we have . Infact we don't have a winger anymore.

Our wingers play as fullbacks.

He is better then Rashford and Martial. I just think we shouldve bought him in the summer but by then he woudlve gone to City.

The only player he has effected is Pogba who is no longer the player we rely heavily and isn't the main man anymore.

Sanchez will be so much better next year as he will have a full preseason with us in the summer.

Agree6 Disagree7

19 Apr 2018 21:09:12
I think when we got Sanchez 9 out of ten seemed pretty pleased . i'm guessing quite a few thought he would come in from the right and not oust two young lads being quite productive from the left . Granted he played a lot from the left with arsenal but he was no stranger or mug from the right either and our right hand side is far from productive in recent seasons .
At first he was cut some slack because he tried high risk passes but it seemed to snowball to the point even basic passes he's struggled with . He's a good player and tries hard but I can't blame the club, the manager or tactics as none of that explains why he's found even basic things so hard .
Hopefully he will come good soon but at the min no way should rash or martial be behind him in the pecking order to play left side on what we have seen not what we hoped we would see.

You don’t pass up and opportunity when a world class player becomes available. And we stopped him going to city who would have gone up a level with Sanchez in their team. He’s struggled since joining but he hasn’t had a pre season and he is adjusting to a new club, teammates and surrounding. I agree that he shouldn’t play on the left and that has displaced rashford and martial. However, I think we will see the best of Alexis next season. A full pre season and no World Cup with do him the world of good. Form is temporary class is permanent.

Agree6 Disagree0

19 Apr 2018 22:06:28
Sanchez is the better player and I think we will see the best of him next year when he settles. January buys always awkward. Willian is a s player I have touted for us before, a Jose type player who works hard and would have settled quicker.
Maybe a try for him in the summer would be a good option.

Agree2 Disagree0

19 Apr 2018 22:14:51
Park, so if Neuer becomes available do we sign him?

Agree3 Disagree6

19 Apr 2018 22:36:17
Does nobody feel it was more Woodward than Jose wanting him, we know he loves his stellar signings. Maybe he was thinking of the impact RVP had.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Apr 2018 22:43:50
AJH, that’s not the same situation, as we already have a world class keeper. We don’t have any world class attackers.

On the Sanchez thing, he’s been fairly poor, but I don’t think he’s really been any worse than anyone else. The whole team have been diabolical at times.

Tbh, if we had Messi in this team with these tactics and set up he’d probably look crap. Who think Salah would be approaching 40 goals had he moved to us? Be lucky to have 15 I think.

Agree6 Disagree1

19 Apr 2018 22:46:35
Martial and Rashford aren't wingers though?

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Apr 2018 23:07:20
AJH that’s obviously not the same situation being that De Gea is world class. I don’t think signing Sanchez was bad but playing him on the left is especially when martial was flying. Jose is paid the big bucks to make it work so he has got to find a way. But getting rid of martial or pogba do fit Sanchez in would be ridiculous.

Agree2 Disagree0

19 Apr 2018 23:13:47
Sanchez will come good after a full pre season.

Pogba has the most assists outside of man city’s top 3 in the league but just looks a bit lazy sometimes. Numbers are good.

Both players will be a lot more effective next yr. Pogba with more midfielders around him and Sanchez having bedded in.

Martial I worry about as I love him as a player but I feel he is the one most likely to leave / be sold out of all the press drivel floating about.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Apr 2018 01:26:48
1. He was effectively free. Holy crap.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed0333's Note - Holy crap is right mate you got rid of one old ineffective player on astronomical wages and replaced him with another.

I think Sanchez will predominantly play from the right next year but have the freedom to roam like mata does now. I think martial and rashford will stay and mata will leave.

You don't even have to think about that, Shappy. Willian didn't want to leave Chelsea so he was never a realistic option for you :-)

Conte talking about Dykes 🤔🤔🤔. Maybe they can exchange places and I would think Conte couldn’t do a better job. What’s he trying to divert? Joker.
Rafael says a lot about our LVG. This provides good insight into how and what LVG is as a person. I am confident Rafael is good or at least he was that good under SAF. Funny he is not good enough for LVG. Bummer 🤣.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - LVG is just old skool and likes bush rather than Brazilian.}

19 Apr 2018 09:13:04
Agree 666 rafael’s comments were very telling of how things were under LVG and his man management style. I personally think it was a huge mistake to sell him he was one of my favourite players and his attacking output was much better than Valencia’s only issue was he was rash at times such as his sending off against Ribery when we played Bayern in 2010.

Agree3 Disagree0

19 Apr 2018 10:44:07
Yeah Park I like Rafael as well - anytime better than Rojo or what we have now. Sending off aside we were always the target anyway. Most times other clubs do the same they get off but we get punished I feel. Just look at the Nani situation. Anyway there will also be cases where we were shown leniency so I’ll leave it as that.
But I really cannot get myself to defend on any criticism of LVG as I just think he is worse than Moyes. Moyes is nice person but lousy manager and LVG is okay manager but I don’t like his demeanor. Those two didn’t help us to be honest. We just went spiraling downwards from there. Sad.

Now that debate today went on a bit and 2 sides clashed nothing more.
No one was abused or insulted.
Now whether it's toxic or lvg it's gone. now we are with Jose the here and now.
I don't know whether Danny is banned or not but he is A good bloke never insulted anyone on here a good honest poster.
I hope Danny can post on here from now on.
We will have to leave the word toxic and move on,
Sometimes things get a bit heated but there's no harm in most of the posters here.
It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.
Let's debate be nice and have a laugh.

Agree leahy but do remember we don't see most of abuse and/ or toxic posts, they are filtered out. What people need to understand is stability and support is a must, we need to move in a single direction hand in hand not criticise and moan all the time. And most importantly we need to respect the editors who run, according to me, the best footballing site in the internet all for free.

So be a bit patient, moan a lot less and don't abuse anyone specially when you don't have half as much knowledge as the other person.

With all the talk on this page being about how much of a toxic fan-base we are, I can't help agreeing. With the result on the weekend being far from good, I can understand and feel the frustration of our fan-base.

However I cannot understand why some of us are calling for Mourinho's head. We knew the person we were hiring and now that he is playing the football he knows, (and moving us up to second place) we instantly complain and criticize him for not playing the 'MU way', even though he has given his upmost throughout his tenure and has produced many amazing results (incl. beating the 2 most attractive football teams in the BPL) . If JM had done this for any other BPL side, I don't think we would see a similar reaction by the fans.

By the looks of things, the club is in a real mess right now. Ed002, since I value your opinion, what would you say the club needs to do to fix the problems we face atm? I understand that your time is limited so sorry in advance if this has already been answered or if it's to vague.

Important three points and played some nice stuff in parts. Really liked our front three today thought rashford was a threat all night and martial did some nice things. Pogba was much better today kept things simple and provided another assist. Think it’s 10 for the season. Imagine if he was consistent! Would be some unreal stats. Danny higginbotham wrote a great piece today for the S*n stating that pogba is a better player when he is less involved. When he has more touches it often means he’s picking the ball up too deep off the cbs and trying to play the Hollywood ball. And that Sanchez is better picking the ball up from deep and making things happen. At first I wasn’t sure but seeing our second goal against city that is exactly what happened. Perhaps that is a solution to getting them to play in the same team. Allow pogba to make those runs beyond the striker and get him in those dangerous areas. Allow Sanchez to pick the ball up from deeper and drive forward and pick a pass.

Herrera was another one who looks to be coming into some form. And great to see Luke shaw get a run out thought he had a good second half and his overlapping runs were exactly what we have been missing. Him and martial could be a devastating left hand side partnership if given a run of games. However I expect Sanchez and young to start on Saturday.
