Opened this page earlier and i was shocked with the mass amount of posts regarding us missing out on some world class talent, Pedronaldo is it?

Give it a rest boys! Pedro would have improved us but not as much as some of you would expect. I'd prefer Januzaj and Pereira to get more game time on the right rather than forking out 22m+ on a 28 yo benchwarmer at Barca.

What I'm more concerned about is the GK situation, De Gea, Valdes and Lindegaard still at the club and only Romero and Johnstone seem to getting a look in. I hope we get the other 3 moved on and bring in Jasper Cillessen as 1st choice.

But overall I am fairly confident towards the Newcastle game as it is my first ever visit to Old Trafford, which is quite an embarrassment for myself as I have never been able to afford it, but now working 2 jobs I am able to put money aside to travel to Manchester. So here is to a beginning of many amazing days at Old Trafford for myself and the rest of you!

I agree Weggy. I think Romero has done well so far but their is a reason as to why he was a free transfer and he has had numerous blunder filled errors in the past.

I hope LVG can see that DDG is a goalkeeper who needs to be replaced with one of equal quality and not a lesser stop gap. We know LVG has worked with Romero in the past but this shouldn't cloud his judgement as we all know super Dave was key to us getting that CL spot last season.

I have never rated Pedro myself was speaking to a family member the other day who's a chelsea fan saying they were glad chelsea was not signing Pedro as he isn't that good had to laugh now that he's on his way to them I agree with posters.on here saying stop reading the papers we looked great on pre season won 3 out of 3 this season darmain is a great player smalling playing out of his skin romero is a crackin keeper who is good enough to replace de gea our midfielders of mata schwinstieger schniderlin fellani carrick herrera is more than enough depth In that area januzaj is improving every day memphis showing his potential all we need is a striker like kane or lazacette then there will be no stopping us for the league

20 Aug 2015 04:59:12
We have looked good in preseason and have started the season well, but we looked good in preseason last year, but were far from great in the league.

I am a little concerned about what we will do and how we will perform if player of the season so far Smalling gets injured. And let's be honest he is injury prone on past track record.

Add to this Rooneys patchy form and the uncertainty regarding Degea. I think we need more than a striker. IMO we need at least 3 players. A striker, a CB and set Dave free and get a keeper.

I want Dave to stay, but no point keeping if his heart is not in it.

Hi Guys

I really don't know what to make of our transfer dealings this window.Yes we have made some good signings but we have also let some good players go.David De Gea is still likely to go and there is no way Sergio Romero is the same class De Gea. We have apparently been on the verge of signing many players that have not materialised Ramos, Otamendi and Pedro to name a few.We are supposedly making bids for Thomas Muller and we all know how that's going to end.So what's our great plan let's sign Mane from Southampton.I can see Real Madrid and Barcelona shaking in their shoes.I live in hope that there is a major signing or two in the pipeline but I'm not confident. Our squad is good but not great so come on Louis pull your finger out and make us great again.

Just a thought after the brugge game about LVG reaction he seems unhappy about how memphis has scored (reading between the lines) because they wernt team goals is it me or does he shackell individual talent and prefer them to play always like a team and disaprove young exciting players making something happen with a bit of magic, i say this because i hear all these "stripping united identity" although i don't think its as bad as that i can see why these thing are said. I beleive as a utd fan a united player should be given the confidence to express himself not told off for it i just don't want us to turn into arsenal trying to score the perfect team goal all the time but winning no trophies in doing so, be interesting to hear anybodies thoughts,

One thing on the Pedro saga that has exploded this evening. I personally do not see Pedro as the player to improve our team but I can see why he has been looked at.

The thing I want to touch on though is this, why did the manager talk publicly about him when there was no deal in place? If you listen to LVG's comments he would lead you to believe that all loose ends are tied up and the ball was in Pedro's court and 'that it was all down to the player'.

Now LVG has been around long enough to know that fans are gullible so why is he making these sorts of comments about a player United have no agreement with? It makes him and Manchester United look foolish. There is either no communication from the manager and the men up stairs or LVG has unwittingly put his foot in it again.

19 Aug 2015 21:16:13
The outpouring of grief over a Barcelona reserve winger has been something to behold. I could only understand if this was deadline day and we were scrimping on £1m for Bale or Muller. There are likely other reasons contributing to the deal not happening and I am the first to criticise our owners for scrimping but this doesn't feel like that. I am not sure either parties heart was in this, let's remember there was an example where Sanchez only wanted to play in London.

I was never keen on Pedro, I didn't see that role as the key one and said openly only a Bale/Griezman level should be brought in. I do not feel let down one bit today, this is no PR disaster. This whole situation has been built up far too much by the press for their own use and only become newsworthy because we haven't as yet addressed the key issues. I will be angry if we don't address the fundamental key issues by the close in the window, that is what is important.

19 Aug 2015 21:29:37
Red Man, I agree completely re Pedro. However, we were batting our eyelashes at him and it does seem we lost him as we were haggling. If we wanted him we should have paid the money, if not we should have stopped flirting with him; we look amateurish. I agree re the top quality signing though, as I said earlier if we can't sign a worldie then we should keep our powder dry

Did he definitely go there for Pedro? Has this been confirmed or denied by anyone who matters? I've not heard either way tbh. Could it have been another player, as I can't see LVG suddenly phoning Edward up, as he is sat in a meeting in Barcelona, saying 'actually Ed, I don't really fancy him, especially for £22m', just doesn't add up.

Ed001's Note - just the valuation mate. Barca knew there was interest from Chelsea so refused to budge on their valuation. United simply felt he wasn't worth that much to them when he was more keen on the Chelsea move. If he had shown a real desire to join, I do think the money would have been found

Yes, its a fiasco. Yes, a pr disaster.
But Atleast if we're not coughing up the money for a player, i see no better reason from our side.

What a night, Januzaj plus a couple of others were just, well dull. What happened to the rip roaring songs we used to have. Some of them were too clever by half and if I'm honest the crowd seemed half hearted as well. I know there are bigger issues right now but it was very odd

The januzaj song is a good one, the songs sound fantastic when we go away and sing them but old Trafford has never really had that amazing atmosphere when it comes to songs, think you could feel the tension last night in the fans, the noise when we scored the third was the release of all that tension.

Putting aside our ham fisted attempts at new signings I do think Chelsea have made a panic buy. Their issues are very similar to ours, lacking at CB and CF. I don't want any more squad ayers as I think we are covered. We are missing magic and if we can't sign it then let's keep the cash until we can. We have made 4 great signings and Januzaj and Pereira can step up. We are light up front but if we can't sign a worldwide then let's go with what we have. 3 games,3 wins. Chill

Agree with u there mate. Of course its a panic buy! I don't honestly see where he fits in. Hazard is their main attacking midfield player and we know chelsea don't like to attack too much (or should I say mourinho). I have a sneaky feeling this is not a mourinho signing and Abramovich is upto his old tricks again.

I fancy a bet on José leaving chelsea sometime this season

20 Aug 2015 00:37:00
Chelsea need a RW who can score goals. Not many of them out there. We were close to signing Reus but pulled out due to his legal issues and then we signed Cuadrado. Personally I don't think we're lacking in the CB department. If Rahman settles in quickly, then Azpi can switch to RB and if we partner JT with Zouma and we'll be solid again with Iva and Cahill as cover. Next year we'd likely need a new CB though. As for CF, we're unlikely to sign a new one unless we sell Remy. I don't feel to comfortable with our options at CF but tbh they're better than pretty much everyone bar City.
I think our focus next should switch to a more defensive CM/DM, whilst shipping out Mikel and Ramires.

19 Aug 2015 19:22:44
Dwight Yorke on Bein Sports and saying he finds this whole Saga unbelievable especially when the United Chief Executive flies out to Barcelona just days ago.

It is quite a bit of mismanagement of the situation and a PR Shamble that comes with it for a publicly listed company whether you rate the player or don't and whether you think we need him or not.

Believable6 Unbelievable2

19 Aug 2015 19:34:18
Sharahm, that was the point Danny was making earlier, which I agreed with. Think we've been lumped in with the chicken licken brigade, tho :)

As regards whether or not he is good enough, personally, for the money involved, I think he would have been a good addition to the squad. But I'm not going to lose any sleep over not getting him.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 19:40:10
Exactly GCU. It's not about whether we think Pedro would improve us, the fact is LVG does. It's a massive PR embarrassment with Woodword flying out and coming back without the player, and all this talk of LVG pulling the plug and bids for Muller and Mane (players we won't sign this summer) is designed to save face and placate naive supporters who desperately want to believe that we must have something else in the pipeline.

The truth is our spend this summer is pitifully low (especially considering the money we shifted from the wage bill) for a team supposedly intent on challenging for a title. Now we're going to have to scramble for players like two summers ago, or pretend that we already have a title winning squad.

Agree4 Disagree2

19 Aug 2015 19:54:06
Completely agree, we are quick beco,I got a laughing stock. We wanted Otamendi but were haggling over the price so City breeze in and take him. The fact Ed flew to Barcelona only to lose him is ridiculous. As I gphave said many times, if we have a strategy we are keeping it well hidden. I suspect we will see a stupid panic buy on deadline day

Noucamp

I am not losing sleep over it either and agree he would have improved us.

Danny

Our spend this year net is under 20 million pounds which is lower tier PL teams expenditure, so it is a bit of a puzzle and stuff like today makes you wonder as AJH says is there even a strategy in place and who is making decisions. the manager said the process as he calls it started in January so bewildered how we can do some of this stuff lol.

Just bizarre and by any measure we are the biggest or second biggest club in the work and you never see stuff like this happen to Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern.

A lot of senior people in the corporate world will get sacked for stuff like this as the pr shamble is not acceptable to large organisations. I worked for one and everything you do is well thought trough because of the possible media exposure and damage to the brand.

Dread to think what we will do in the next 10 days lol.

There are reports that we gave up our interest in Pedro last week. I don't know if that is true but if it is then Woodward was not in Spain sorting a deal for him and may have been doing other business. If that is true then the only reason we look bad is due to the press reporting. Let's not get too down on the powers that be.

To my food friend god created. So you would have us spend 150 million on duds like falcao and a snieveling weasel like adm. Or would you rather spend decent money and bring in some players who actually want to and will play for the club. And with regards to Pedro we were not his first choice apparently so screw him mate. Because with januzaj and perriera in the wings we have plenty of cover on the wings. So, stop moaning .Had we missed on a marquee player the whining would be sensible but its not a bale or areus its Pedro. I've been reading this site daily since 2011, I've had a few names, but I rarely posted, but recently the meltdown on this site has been comical and very unwarranted. We've won 3 from 3 got six points in the league and take a 3-1 aggregate lead to Brügge. Is it all really that bad? Yes we may need a new CB and a new ST/Wing Forward. But I don't think for one second were as far off as some people may think, we've sorted out midfield which we've been crying out for, for about 5 - 6 years. We've signed seemingly a quality RB in Matteo Darmian, Shaw seems to have sorted his fitness out he looks great, Smalling is growing fantastically, Memphis (dare i say it) looks like that spark we've been missing since Ronaldo, he was outstanding last night not just from his goals and assists but his all round play was great, he was trying to create and craft chances for others. His footballing brain is great and at such a young age will (hopefully) develop to be even better and if he turns out to be half the player Ronaldo is that's £23 odd million well spent. The two Sch's have improvement out midfield drastically and I can comfertably say that's out strongest area on the pitch and that's a far cry from the past few seasons, okay Rooney has been poor. Give him time he will find his feet, it's Wayne Rooney, soon to be Englands all time top scorer, give him a break he's earnt that over the years (contract situations aside). All we need IMO is a CB and an ST, no idea who will come in, I'd have liked Pedro and upgrade on Mata in RW position as Juan doesn't have the raw pace needed to be a RW, however I'd be 100% to see Adnan take RW by the scruff of its neck this season and push Mata into the middle where he is most affective. Ideally I'd like Muller/Lewandowski/Lacazette for the ST position but they are seemingly unattainable right now. For the time being I wouldn't turn my nose up at Lukaku or Berahino (spelling) they are both young hungry strikers who wouldn't mind playing second fiddle to Rooney, and if he carrys on not to perform will surely snap up his spot and make it their own as they are young hungry forwards with a point to prove. CB Otamendi would have been great but seemingly he's off to City. Shame, Hummels would have been ideal great presence, fantastic leader, again unattainable right now. So, Stones? Young with plenty of time to develop already looks like a brilliant CB, Laporte? Same as Stones, young and mouldable. CB is a real conundrum as there doesn't seem to be a lot of quality CB's available right now. All in all that's my two penneths worth off what i think of this window, it's overall been good. Solid signings but we need that ST & CB. And also with our start to this season, people are being very very pessimistic about it. We've got 6 for a possible 6 in league, look set to make the UCL proper and played genuinely good football last night, that's seemingly going to add a bit of confidence before the Newcastle game, I think we'll see a better team on Saturday that in the first two games. All in all I just think we need to cut all this negativity and pessimism out and get behind the lads, it's going to be an exciting season, and I can't wait.

Cheers. NNN.

Good sensible post, a lot of people have gone into meltdown during the last couple of windows, they seem to think this is football manager or whatever the latest game is called. Calm down, just because a player( usually foreign) costs a fortune doesn't mean he will be a great buy. We have had Anderson, Nani, Veron, Kleberson, Di Maria etc who all never justified the massive transfer fees, & that's just United look at all the other clubs Torres, Carroll,Shevchenko etc. Then look at some of our best buys, Cantona,Bruce, Irwin,Kanchelskis, Sharpe, Vidic, Evra, Van der Saar. Point is you have to spend wisely not rashly with whoever is flavour of the month. Talk sport have had their South American expert on today & he said that Otamendi is massively overpriced & didn't blame United for not pursuing him. Its obvious LVG feels the same. Hand on heart how many of us had heard of him before the media started all the rumours, tbh i had not heard of Depay until we signed him. Its all about opinions & everyones is different.

During Pre-Season there were so many pundits saying 'Chelsea is a Completely solid, settled team with only a good striker needed'.

When they were hammered by Red bulls, little panic kicked in.

There was a feeling that 'Chelsea are already stronger without any new signings even if the likes of City, United, Arsenal buy heavily and pre season games means nothing'.

They signed Falcao, Begovic, Kennedy and three others during that time.

Then during Community Shield 'Jet lag and tiredness are the reasons behind their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. They will be normal in a 7 days time'. TROUSER LOOSED A BIT.

In Swansea game they might have lost the game if that lucky deflected goal was not scored. MORE PANIC.

In City game they were absolutely hammered by Aguero and co. Mourinho tried to satisfy himself by saying it was a fake result. To be honest i have to say Aguero was a bit rusty againt Chelsea.

Yesterday he saw United's good showing in CL qualifier. As usual he is more defensive minded so instead of buying a player he really needs, he plays defensively by stopping us signing Pedro. He may stop city signing Otamendi in the same manner.

PANIC BUTTON pressed.

In a matter of 20 days Mourinho and Chelsea melted down? Best back four in PL suddenly not even trusted by their own manager? Now Azpilicueta moved to right as I believe, Rahman left, Zouma and Cahill as CBs how settled is that back four?

To be honest I think Jose knew that we would not be good enough unless we signed 3 or 4 world class players. I think that this stems from the fact that Terry may have declined and not be the player of last year, when he held the defence together. You can't just stand still, u have to improve and hopefully that has now sunk in
I said that we (Chelsea) would be fighting for 4th place this year and have not changed my mind. I agree with most of what u say MM, most Chelsea supporters have the same feeling about Pedro as u lads, but we shall see.
Jose annoys us a lot of the time , so god knows what other teams think of him, but he is usually successful.
Good luck for this season, think we will all be chasing city this year,

Sid, I think the lad Zouma will blossom into a top CB; but at the moment he seems a bit defensively naive in certain situations. But he does have blistering pace and is very strong so he will definitely be an asset when playing against quick forwards.

I think Chelsea look a bit light in general. There doesn't seem to be real depth in the squad. A few key injuries could really have an impact. I mean, as good as Costa is, he seems to be injured quite a lot or not fully fit; and you don't have much in the way of back up that can be relied upon to get you goals.
Of course, you still have Hazard, but it might be a bit much to rely on one player bailing you out offensively every week.

I think it is way to premature to write you off yet. Granted, there are problems, but they can be redressed in the next few weeks with the right signings.

Shame about Pedro, i rate him highly. He can cross or shoot on either foot and makes good runs behind the defence, the unpredictability could have been an asset to our team. If Costa stays fit I'm sure Pedro will place the ball on a sixpence for him to score multiple times this season and even chipping in on the goals himself.

Anyone else excited to see Memphis and Januzaj in a couple seasons, Januzaj's dribbling and close control is a joy to watch, both seem to be the type of players that draw players in and both have an arrogance/confidence on the ball. Which a smart striker or runner can exploit the space created. As long as they both improve on their decision making, both their careers look bright.

Concerning our strikers, by playing a front 3 with inside forwards we need a striker which our attacking players can bounce off, and brought into play. We have Rooney that tends to score goals in bursts and he's short passing can be disappointing. Januzaj is pushed off the ball too easily for my liking to play as a central striker. Kane or Lewandowski would be ideal however, i can see LVG not buying a striker due to a lack of quality strikers that are available or priced too high, and use fellaini in this position should Rooney be injured or not up to standard, i do not know how to feel about this.

I am more concerned about why we get ourselves into umpteen situations like this year on year in the last few years than actually him going to chelsea or anywhere else being realistic that he would have been a quality addition but not a game changer for us.

There is something quite strange about our transfers which bring a lot of unnecessary publicity which can build up steam when things don't go well on the pitch for us. Why the distraction and why the long drawn out sagas?

Sources close to me reveal that we were almost signing Benteke, but all that turned around the moment he talked to Brendan Rodgers and the kind of football he'll make him play. After losing out of signing him, every United fan on this earth shed a tear.

The source also claimed that we were in for a Adam Bogdan and the same thing happened with him saying United lacked ambition and are incapable of winning trophies.

A few years ago we were in for Henderson but liverpool pipped us to it because they were a bigger and were able to pay more money to sunderland.

We've beaten down to so many players like markovic, jovanovic, emre can, james milner by liverpool.

I was so taken aback by our lack of decisiveness in signing players with characters that I went into depression for years.

Only watching liverpool's masterclass last season to reach the heights of the 7th place finish made me stay sane and I believe rather am certain that this season liverpool would finish as title winners winning every single game of the season.
The only thing missing in liverpool squad is another free agent left to be signed or some spanish lad who had a decent season in a mid table club.
Add that and liverpool shall win the europa league by winning promotion to champions league twice (by becoming champions and winning europa league)

I urge all manchester united fans to stop supporting manchester united and see the masterclass of Brendan

To be fair, if we don't bring no one in I for one won't lose any sleep over it. I have always thought that CM and the RB positions were the key areas to sort out which we have done with flying colours.
Memphis has given us another dimension in attack; and Jauzaj is showing signs that he is going to be the player we all thought he would be when he first burst on the scene.
Rooney is a concern, but there were signs yesterday that he is slowly coming back to form. I also think Hernandez could do really well in the current set up if given game time.
Of course - like most - I would like to see more players signed, especially an out and out goal scorer; but if it doesn't happen I am not going to change my view that I think we will compete for trophies this season.

I'm normally classed as Mr. Negative but no way should we be down about this news. Otamendi & Pedro have both been around for ages and have not done much personally. We need players that desperately want to play for the club, players like ADM are not right for the manager or our club, first sign of trouble they will be looking for a new deal elsewhere and I sense that about Pedro in particular.

For Chelsea & City to be the ones they are going to tells me all I need to know about their character. Salah/Cuadrado/Moses - add Pedro to that list.

Otamendi - looks good, but hardly setting the world alight and for that money no way is he worth it! We have plenty of cover at the back (especially as Blind & Carrick can play there) and with our defensive midfielders being elite at that role we are sorted defensively imo. Yes we need a winger, but Pedro isn't world class, rather be going for Robben or Muller.

Pedro wouldn't lift us to that next level, our next signings need to do that otherwise we are stuck with more squad players. No CB's of that level or Wingers available then wait, maybe we get a surprise deal done. I don't think there is a master plan here, but not buying squad players or overvalued mercenaries that will be a nightmare to shift on when they realise that Utd is more hard work than Barcelona, then I'm happy with that.

I would not be disappointed if we do not make any signings now. LVG has trust in the players what more should we need? Though Wayne needs to be firing on all cylinders very soon.

I am very happy and excited by the performances of our young players, Memphis, Adnan and Shaw.

I think we need to trust the manager, Utd always had this arrogance to get players they want, but they also see if the player is really interested in playing for the club and not a mercenary who is looking at United with one eye and had the other one on other clubs.

I have a question. Now I could have posted it on any of the team pages but I think we have pretty much done all our incoming business. I see lots of people on various sites saying they don't want to sign player x because he's not utd class, liverpool class etc and the best of the lot is "world class".
Players descriptions after a couple of games ala Smalling further down the page as world class. Now I'm not disputing whether he is or isn't.
So my question is ;
What constitutes a world class player in your opinions?
Playing for one of the top national teams, top domestic teams.
Would he get into any team in world football etc
So what is the criteria for it?
Alternatively would a player who improves a certain position ala Darmian be not of more benefit to any team than a stellar supposedly "world class" name ala DiMaria who had little impact on your team.
Personally I think the words world class are to easily attributable to players after too few appearances. I think world class teams make certain players look much better than they actually are. Be interested to hear your thoughts and I'm sure given the fan traffic from other sites on here we might get a few replies from them too.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

19 Aug 2015 16:22:47
Good post, Simon.

I suppose a world class player is someone who plays at the highest level and performs consistently above that of his fellow peers. Other than that, IMO, the rest is subjective reasoning based on different variables.

I think in today's game, there are probably around a handful off players in each position who could rightfully be termed world class.

What has smalling better than liverpool players got to do with the question Harry. It was an example of "world class" being used after a couple of games. It just goes to show your mentality that you can't answer a simple question without trying to be childish. I gave examples of Utd players because we're on the Utd page. I could've used players relevant to other teams if I asked it on that particular page. Grow up!!!

Like any other high profile business things don´t always go the way you plan them. But to attack LVG for incompetence or the like is utter stupidity. Far too often on these pages - especially during the transfer window - folks appear with cool funny sounding names and very little substance to add. It´s getting tiresome reading the knee jerk reactions of the transfer window tourists who visit the site with their doom mongering. Rebuilding a world class football team will take time and a huge ammount of behind the scenes efforts to which we´re not privy to. I´m sure to the short sighted it may seem LVG and Woody are getting it all wrong and screwing up the window. But it may just be that sometimes you say ´no´ to something in life or business because you have a bigger ´yes´ already or one you´re working on.
I´m sure most folks who watched the team last night saw the beginnings of a new and exciting era for United. LVG may be too much of an absurdly Dutch liberal for most Utd based conservatives, but he´s a world class business manager and coach. Give him time.
Rant over.

Come end of season you will be below us and again trophy less, there is no need for me to worry about who you may or may not sign.

As it stand, there's more chance of Jose leaving before Christmas than you finishing above us. I mean, in all honesty, you are not concerned that the rumors of a potential tumult about to erupt between the manager and the owner (there was bad blood before) does not bother you?
You're not playing very well either. I mean, being as objective as I possibly can, defensively speaking, you look all over the place with a serious lack of pace at the back. Both Swansea and City opened you up like a tin of sardines on a number of occasions.

The truth is, while you have a very good first 11 when everyone is fit, there are still glaring deficiencies defensively; and you have no real depth. An injury to Matic would cost you dearly as you don't have anyone of a similar quality - doing the job he does - to replace him.

Big game for you this weekend away to the baggies. I hope they stuff you personally, but suspect you will get something out of it.

I thought I'd give my two cents on this Pedro matter. People were for his signing and people against, I was one of the latter. I thought he would be an ok addition but no more. He would have added pace and probably a few more goals than the likes of Young, however, I really don't think he'll have an enormous impact on the league similar to someone like Alexis Sanchez or Eden Hazard.

The one thing I am annoyed about is how we have been made to look. It seemed clear he was joining but apparently LVG feels it's better to stick with Januzaj rather than pay a figure higher than what he feels Pedro is worth. However, surely this was clear even last week? Surely this move hasn't been swung by the goal Januzaj scored last week? I'd like to think there was more thoughts going into our signings than thinking someone is needed then one week later saying actually this young guy who's been around the first team for a couple of seasons is worth looking at instead? It now looks like Chelsea have stolen a player from us and we look daft.

Nevertheless let's move on and sign a couple of top players to end the window. We will likely still need 4 if De Gea leaves to have a squad capable of winning the title but as long as 1 or 2 come in to strengthen we will be in quite a good place.

Must admit, slightly disappointed that it would seem we have lost out on Pedro, however, this may be a blessing in disguise and perhaps will force our hand in the remaining window. I would love Muller to come in but perhaps we have made contact with Bayern which the press have got wind of but really it is Gotze we are asking about and the reason why LVG decided against Pedro? Hopefully Schweinsteiger is having a word in some ears out there!!

Could any of the eds explain how city got ahead of us for Otamendi? We're we just unwilling to meet the valuation? Thanks in advance!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - they were looking for the buyer to pay the buyout clause + taxes, United simply were not willing to match that valuation and kept looking to get the fee down. City were willing to meet the fee.}

19 Aug 2015 15:11:47
I don't think that the costs involved for getting Otamendi stack up for me. It is not value for money for someone who is 27/28 and although is a good player is unproven in the PL. I would rather pay £35M for Stones and although that is overpriced you can get value due to the fact that he is much younger and is playing in the PL.
Stones has the potential to be another Rio

Agree1 Disagree1

19 Aug 2015 14:53:30
ED01 how much would be the outlay for City in the Otamendi deal?

I read we were quoted a price of 28.5 million pounds.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - his buyout clause was 50m Euros, so that plus the taxes on it. Though it will not be an immediate outlay as they are agreeing deals to pay over as long a term as possible to reduce FFP impact.}

19 Aug 2015 15:17:36
There is a centre half in Scotland Virgil Van Dijk, he is the real deal and at a quoted price of £10 million would be an absolute steal.

I would have him over Stones and Otamendi at that price. He will end up signing for someone like Everton and in 2 years time they will sell him for £30 million.

Ed007 what do you reckon?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Van Dijk's a cracking player but he needs to prove himself on a bigger stage before Man Utd see him as anything more than a squad player unless the loss of supposed targets like Ramos or Otamendi has pushed him further up the pecking order.
Southampton have been long time admirers of van Dijk and Everton see him as a possible replacement for Stones, Newcastle were rumoured to also have an interest because of McClaren's time spent in Holland but Celtic are hoping that qualifying for the CL will persuade the big Dutchman to stay in Glasgow until at least January.}

19 Aug 2015 16:37:01
Best of luck for tonight bond. Hopefully see you on the other side.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 15:53:45
Ed001, will part of this be offset against what City are still owed for Negredo? Do clubs work like that when possible?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - yes and yes. Another one of those was the signing of Glenn Johnson by Liverpool, as Portsmouth owed Liverpool a lot of money, so that was knocked off the price.}

19 Aug 2015 16:40:21
I think the qualification will either convince him to stay or push up his price so it's win win. The people who run Celtic are extremely astute.

I understand you saying he may need to prove himself on a bigger stage. I've watched a serious amount of him, a lot of my good friends are celtic fans and I haven't heard them rave about a player like this since the days of larsson and Co, I think he would be tremendous for us, much better than jones/evans and I would much rather spend on him, throw him in, instead of signing a 30-40million defender. Van Dijk in 2 years will be worth that.

Hello

I rarely post but I have been reading on this sight for years.

I just thought that I would add my thoughts about what's going on.

1.Firstly assuming its right. WOODWARD wouldn't travel to Spain for nothing, doesn't necessarily mean PEDRO.

2.I think I read on here a post by someone saying we are lining up LAPORTE, I think BFRO posted it, so perhaps that's what we are working on instead of OTAMENDI.

3.LVG has been around long enough not to be deemed stupid enough to talk about a player openly and then suddenly deem him not needed, I actually think he may of been feeding the media who were desperate for information, and using it as a smoke screen for someone else.

4. LVG has banged on about the need for pacey forwards, and is obviously aware of what we already have in the likes of JANUZAJ, WILSON, LINGARD, HERNANDEZ etc. so brings me back to point 3 again.

5. Although BLIND and SMALLING are doing well together, its a long season and LVG will be painfully aware the others are injury prone/not good enough and will bring a new CB in soon.

6. I also think MATA could be a surprise SALE, he slows things down too much wide right, when he comes inside it stifles ROONEYS lacklustre wanton need to drop deep, I think we may well buy an out and out CF with ROONEY behind, depay LW and JANUZAJ/ someone else RW.

I may well get criticized but there's my thoughts

Believable1 Unbelievable0

19 Aug 2015 14:16:33
I don't understand why people predict Mata being sold when he manages to start almost every game of ours that too not in his favoured position.

Very good post mate. Point number three is spot on IMO.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 15:05:53
I mentioned in another post about Mata being sold. If not this window then I could see January as a possibility.

I think he is technically very, very good, but he is competing for the desired NO:10 place which IF we bring in a CF would belong to Rooney, and we know Rooney plays because he is club captain.

Mata has started all the games so far but in a position where he is not natural and that position usually requires speed.

I personally think Mata is a class act, but if he doesn't "fit the system", then sadly he will lose out.

Agree2 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 14:41:41
I have no idea why everyone says sell mata. Yes he isn't a right winger but he's more of a number 10 than fellaini januzaj and memphis! He will more than likely outscore 2 of those 3 also. Also if we did sell mata who would we play on the right? If they are a better option why are they not playing now? i'd rather mata play number 10 januzaj play wide or young. injuries will also hamper us as always over the season. With a better center forward we would be better that's for sure and matas touch hasn't been anywere near as bad as rooneys. Yet his obsession to drop deep hampers us upfront

i also said the other day, if the window shut and we didn't sign another player i'd still be fairly happy with the business we've done as we have sorted a fair few issues within the team.

i must admit i do find it a bit annoying that i read we are about to announce such and such player only to see him signing with a rival, but i guess that's my own fault for listening to ssn and other media.

anyways onward and upwards, hopefully another 3 pts against newcastle at the weekend and hopefully a similar performance as last night.

Can only hope what we have at the back is good enough this season and that Rooney, Depay, Mata etc can match the goal hauls of Aguero and Costa etc? Pedro would have helped and Otamendi could have strengthened the back line. LVG must know what he is doing as I think he has missed out on two good players. Possibly he sees Januzaj as better than Pedro and Smalling and Blind/Rojo are good enough with our midfield?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Smalling is better than Otamendi IMO. If not now, he will be before long if he maintains his development.

What would Pedro bring to the team and how much would he improve us?
Where would he play and more importantly whom would make room for him? Janazui maybe.
Pedro is a good footballer but he is definetely not world class.I would rather see our younger players get more gametime in order for their careers to progress.

We have greatly improved the squad on last year so anyone who comes in now has to be that little bit special. Buying just for the sake of it is going to kill us.I q

to be fair when there is a bit of 'bad news' it always happens straight away, the page gets clogged up with people who pretty much never post saying 'I told you so, we are finished etc etc' and then by late afternoon the regulars come on and we realise the world hasn't ended and we move on and look forward to the next match. It is standard procedure!

Rodio, with out being rude, I think you're talking doggy doo mate. I think you have not only missed the point but you have missed the point of the point: Pedro isn't that great. He isn't world class. He isn't going to turn us into a super team. He would have given pace and more depth but that is it.

What I find comical is the lack of knowledge exhibited by some when it comes to the abilities of footballers. Anyone would have thought we have just missed out on the next big thing since sliced bread. But that isn't the case. Far from it in-fact.
And yes, I don't think there is much between Young and Pedro given the fact the Young knows the PL inside out where the diminutive Spaniard has yet to experience the rigors of the PL.

I know some of you guys liken football to the cyber world version, but in real life, things don't always turn out the same.

Given the Pedro saga going on, would one of the Eds help us understand how clubs value a player. I appreciate that its pretty fruitless talking about money as there are a lot of variables, but what I can't get my head around is how can a club arrive at an evaluation and believe that it is very accurate. If the reported £2m difference in valuation is true, it begs the question how united value a player so accurately to not budge, and more importantly, is there no consideration of how much the player will add to the team? Plus how did we value ADM at £60m?? are players are treated purely as assets to the football club from an accounting perspective and there is little consideration otherwise or is it a case of having different rules for different players?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it is a subjective valuation based on how highly rated they are by the manager (or whoever is in charge of selecting players at the club in question), added to factors such as stats, age, wages the player would require, signing fee involved etc etc. There are hundreds of different factors, but it is very subjective. A lot comes down to how desperate a team is to add someone in that particular position.}

19 Aug 2015 15:15:14
Thanks for that Ed. Would it then be fair to assume that if united were haggling for the reported £2m for Pedro, then we and LvG were not quite so keen on the player?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - yes, I think it is why Januzaj has got his chance.}

19 Aug 2015 16:07:27
Thanks Ed. I thought as much. I hope the some of the other posters stop slagging off the way we go about our transfer decisions as though we were clueless about it all and understand that its not the case where united are being silly about the money. There is a thought process behind all this.

I think people need to chill out with regards to Pedro. If lvg believes we don't need him and is willing to put his trust in januzaj I am more than happy with that! He is 20 and if pedro came he would have fallen down the pecking order. Pedro was not a must imo and a striker is more of a necessity

Believable2 Unbelievable0

19 Aug 2015 13:30:18
It's hard to believe we would have lost Pedro over £1-2m, that's chump change. There has to be something more to it. LVG must believe in his squad, feeling that players like Januzaj are going to make a big impact. Or we just don't have room while we have Fellaini and Mata on the payroll? Or maybe we're going to bid £200m for Messi!!!!!

There's one thing we've learned from this year and last. Whenever Woodward flies anywhere it is going to put the kibosh on some deal or other. So be warned: reports like "Woodward jets into Spain" mean "Nothing's going to happen".

I'm gutted. Not because I necessarily buy into the groupthink that's grown around Pedro, but because I am pathologically in thrall to the lust for signings. MORE MORE PLEASE GIVE US MORE!!!!!!!!!!!

Pedro doesn't even improve Chelsea, I don't really see where he will get a game, if cuadrado doesn't play then pedro will hardly play either. He is 28 years old so no resale value and is he really that good? I don't know enough about him but write ups I have read recently I wasn't that fussed about whether we signed him. Other clubs will make out that it's because united are useless and on the way down but we don't quite need to be panicking at this one, the meltdown on here is unbelievable, I wonder how many of these people have seen pedro play regularly and knew what he could bring to the team?

It's hilarious isn't it mate, personal favourite was, "I'm done with transfers now, see you all in January" my god what a flap people have gotten themselves into.

Now if this was Bale or Muller I would probably be peeved but we're talking about Pedro here, someone who would only add squad depth to both U.S. and Chelsea, he's no better than Mata on the ball and all he brings is pace.

I can't believe how much of an overreaction we're seeing here, he's no world beater and this isn't bitterness either before the Scouse mob come in its honesty. LVG has apparently said that he doesn't see the need for Pedro, and I can say the same, not just based on last night but who does he push out the team? Mata? Based on pace? If that's the case I'd rather play either Valencia or Young who both can run at people as well as get back. Januzaj? Once again the only thing Pedro has over him is pace, and we still don't even know the heights he can reach so let's play him and see him blossom.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 13:44:55
It's not really about Pedro per se. It's about the manager stating that the club needed more creativity and pace in attack, and openly identifying Pedro as a player who could provide pace and creativity. It's obvious that we wanted Pedro because the was club negotiating with Barcelona. But we haggled for so long that Chelsea just came in and got him straight away. It doesn't matter how highly posters here rated Pedro. LVG clearly rated him and believed he could solve one of our big problems.

Pedro will be a squad player at Chelsea, whereas he could have been an important player for LVG. This should tell you everything you need to know about this summer's transfer policy: Chelsea were willing to pay more for a second string player than we were for a potential starter.

Totally agree Danny it's not so much who the player is just that LVG was obvious in for him sent Ed over on Monday now he's going to Chelsea and we tell sky that we pulled out of the deal and then too make things worse put it out there that were in for Muller. To me this is a desperate ploy to cover up a balls up. Agree with the liens of Maze that Pedro isn't that star name but he would be a good edition to our side and made us stronger. I do understand that maybe LVG has decided that Mata is the way ahead on the right and if he needs pace we always have Valencia who has kind of been forgotten as an attacking option and is Pedro that much better than a fit in firm Toni. the annoying thing about today is the Muller rubbish, no way will Munich let him go they don't need the money and are a better team than us currently. Like I said it just smarts of being a smokescreen to cover up the ineptitude of the club to lose a player to a rival. I think all of us want to believe we pulled the plug because we have someone else lined up. Just reading that Arsenal have met Madrids asking price for benzema now if that comes off this really is going to be a long hard season

It's human nature to want what you don't have - evolutionarily speaking jealousy makes sense as a survival strategy because it drives individuals to get the things they see others with - food, shelter, mates.

However, now we have evolved to this point we are able to pick and choose the useful things to be jealous about. And Chelsea signing Pedro is not one of them.

Here endeth the lesson.

Totally agree Hitman.
The only reason i wanted Pedro was because its painful to see Mata playing in that team/position. I am pretty sure if Pedro was signed, Mata would have given way.
Pedro has pace to burn, which Mata doesnt. Mata is a vintage car, all class but in todays world, not good enough to race. Vintage look good in rallies.

I am sorry that sounded like a very bad rant, but its what i feel when i see Mata hold up the play and then lose it.

Anyways, on to Pedro, he would have been an improvement. But if it didn't come to fruition, let it go. Hope we have someone better lined up.

Pedro is a good player and I think he would have been a good addition to our squad. But not signing isn't the biggest disaster to befall our club.

If someone offered you Bale, Griezmann or Pedro i suspect Pedro would be your last choice.

Currently we have Mata, Young, Depay and Januzaj as wide options.

Currently I would say Pedro is at a similar level to Mata and Young and slightly better than Depay amd Januzaj based on experience.

He would have been a different option offering pace on the right. But he isn't more skillful or intelligent than Mata. Just quicker. Is he worth 22m plus his huge wages for someone who isn't significantly better than what we have?

He would have been a good option but not someone to build the team around.

For the last 4/5 years he has been a rotation option at Barca, not since Pep left has be been truely first choice. People are quick to point at Neymar and Suarez keeping him out of the team but Suarez has only been there one season, Neymar two. When Neymar was off sick last week they didn't turn to Pedro then until the 80th minute. Who was keeping him out of the team then?

He is a very good player, but think of what people say are his best attributes? Pace, disciplined, understands tactical demands. No one says his great skill, his prolific scoring, his amazing number of assists, his inch perfect passing, his incredible movement. Maybe because he is good at those things but not world class at them.

He is a quick option who can follow the managers orders. Hardly worth the large fee and even larger wages.

If he does come I will be happy as one thing we are missing is pace. But I won't be too gutted if he ends up else where. Apparently Mourinho isn't too keen on him, and for all his praise of him Pep isn't falling over himself to take him to Bayern. Also if Barca valued him that highly then why give him a new contract that brought his buy out clause down from €150m down to €30m if you think he is all that.

A good player who is very useful rather than a great player.

Trust in the manager and the board they know more about what is going on tham we do.

I'm going to get every thing MUFC squad wise out of my head and into this post. I've had loads of thoughts recently and opinions and most of my mates have heard them and don't care, so i'm hoping a couple of you will and maybe even agree with me.

For starters last night was a brilliant game to watch, those last 15 minuets when we were going for that 3rd goal gave me hope. Basti was as controlling as ever and Memphis, what a kid! Maybe have knocked Pereira off my new shirt.

Anyways there is enough ranting and raving about last nights performance on here so i won't add my two pennies.

I'll start with the Goalkeeper. Romero has done nothing wrong so far. Well. Nothing that has cost us a goal. He seem competent and loud and has caught every ball that has come in from a wide position. The only thing i'd say is that he seems very South American. Now, i don't mean this conspiracy sh*t about LvG not liking them or whatever it is. I mean he seems flashy. He seems to confident and it shows when he is clearing the ball. When a pass comes back from a defender he wonders to it and clears like nobody is there, when in reality, someone is baring down on him, i am screaming my head off, bum firmly on the edge of my seat, heart beating at 100mph wishing he has seen the impending doom and bang. It's cleared and Romero's face hasn't changed. Far to casual for my emotions to take but i suppose he knows what he's doing? With regards to a transfer, i think it'll take a few mistakes from Romero to LvG to think he needs a replacement. Lloris or Cillessen will be the player.

Defence. I'll get my moaning disappointment out the way first and that is only that Citeh look to be beating us to Otamendi. Why would we just pay the release clause? I don't claim to know how transfers work but it seems that way. Anyway! Smalling and Blind have kept 2 out of 3 clean sheets together this season and you can barley blame either of them for last nights conceded goal. Smalling is honestly one of the top 5 CB's in the premiership at the moment and i will stand by that statement. Blind though, Blind is a very versatile player, and has done very well in this position considering his height. He is calm, composed, skilfull and a good tackler. I personally have no problem playing him there at the moment. People keep saying, 'wait until he has a test' but hasn't he basically played all the main attributes to a striker?

Kane - Clever & Strong (Didn't score or even threaten)
Abonglahor - Blinding speed (0 Goals)
Gestede - Arguabley the best headerer of the ball last season in the championship. (0 Goals)
Dont know there names but the Brugge players where quick and they one they brough on was huge!

Blind dealt with all of these players by being smarter than them and until he proves otherwise he is playing very well. Height is nothing when you take into account Canavaro/Puyol/Moore were all sub 5'11"

Our wing backs are amazing in my eyes. Shaw is improving by the game and has a link up with Memphis that is one built on friendship. Off the pitch i have read that they are inseparable. Shaw helped Memphis when he arrived more than anyone. Darmian is a classy Gary Neville type player, strong on and off the ball with an awesome ability to tackle. Happy with these two for the foreseeable future.

The Center Midfield problem. Albeit a good problem. Schneiderlin is my first choice as he is just brilliant. He tirelessly breaks down attacks and help when going forward. He is a steal at £24m and i look forward to seeing him the rest of the season. Personally i'd have Bastian along side him, and here's my reasoning. Bastain and Carrick both bring confidence and experience to this team, but of the two, Bastian is more of a leader with more experience. He looks so classy and untouchable when playing. I noticed when we were Vs Villa, he would collect the ball and the Villa players almost paused and waited for the ball to be passed before closing anyone down.

Memphis owns that LW position, and should continue to play there. Young being a very good back-up.

Januzaj has impressed me so far this season, seems to be bulkier and has more confidence about him. LvG trusts him and its possible that, that is why we are now supposedly not interested in Pedro.

Mata is so frustrating for me. Such a good player who seems destined to play RW. And he's not fast nor strong enough to play there. The cut back and left footed pass occasionally work but not all they time. Muller would be my replacement. He's outstanding.

The ST problem last but not least.

I rarely wade in on the buying a striker debate because its repetitive and boring but seeing as i'm doing a whole team analysis thingy i feel i have to. To start though, let's talk about the strikers we have. Rooney has seemed very very average, even below average at time in the last 3 games. He doesn't have what it take to play up there on his own. I found myself applauding last night when he came off, just because i think LvG cuts him too much slack. Hernandez was bright when he came on, although ineffective, would like to see him maybe get a game or two to see what he can do. Wilson is not experienced enough or strong enough to cope at the moment, would wanna keep him and see what he can do in future as he has been tearing the U21's league a new a**hole for a while. The two other names banded about are Januzaj, who i have spoken about and the wig. Fellaini to me is the perfect Plan B, we all saw that last night, the completely changed the way Brugge had to defend and they didn't cope. But this means our plan A can't be the same as our Plan B because that's just logic. That is why i see no Zlatan in our future.

Young guns time.

Sam Johnstone is a very good keeper and will be a good back-up.
Mcnair proved last season he has what it takes and i think he'll do well.
Blackett maybe needs a loan move.
pearson will be exciting but not ready yet.
Goss has a wide passing range but again, like person, not ready.
Fosu-Mensah will be the dogs b******* but again, not ready.
Wilson could probably do with a loan.

I am going to follow this post up with some serious Transfer talk. Look out.

Before people start ranting and raving wait and see what happens. There are myriad of reasons if true.

1. Something else is in the woodworks ( hopefully Gulp Gupl :)
2. LVG does not want him, which is a strange decision since he has publicly spoken about him so why go there.
3. The whole thing is a Marca story that is now being picked up by all the news channels. It will not be the first or last time they spread stuff that is not accurate.

This window is really interesting as i thought to date, we had made the biggest improvements compared to the top 4 clubs.

I would be disappointed if we don't add given cities' and chesea's likely late improvements if you believe the stories

Seems an odd signing for them which has a hint of desperation IMO.

I'm hoping that Chelsea have panicked over their average start to the season and gazumped united on the Pedro deal by offering better personal terms.
Don't get me wrong, I would have liked to have added Pedro to the squad however this would have hindered the development of Januzaj and Depay to some degree and I I'm quite ambivalent to the whole deal.
Obviously the loss of more pace in attacking areas is a blow, but let's hope we double our efforts in bringing in a top centre forward and another centre back.
I would love Muller or Lewandowski. if we could bring in someone in the mould of van Nistelrooy then I think that could be the difference between 3rd/4th and challenging for the title.

Well, I really, really, REALLY don't understand how United would not want to pay this kind of money for a player like Pedro. It's strange to me. Some reports say LVG ended his interest in him for tactical reasons. I hope we're close to someone who is a better player, a STAR if you like. It would be nice to be Tomas, but I don't see Bayern letting him go. And that brings us to the one and only NICO GAITAN haha

To be fair he's 28 now and relies on pace, he has a good goal record but he has had plenty of service from the best midfield I've probably ever seen, his assist record isn't anything special considering the forwards he's played alongside. Also his preferred position is where Depay is, and I know who I would rather have there.

Wouldn't pay the fee for Otamendi, wouldn't pay the fee for Pedro. Sold our most expensive player and highest earner, and got a few more big earners off the wage bill to boot. I'd say we're close to breaking even this summer in the grand scheme of things.

Last summer we broke the bank to get back into the CL. This summer we're back to penny pinching and posturing: chasing players we have no chance of signing and refusing to match the fees of those we do.

In June we wanted to strengthen the spine of the team and get the players in before the summer tour. Entering the final stages of the window with the season already started, we still haven't fully sorted our keeper situation with three players not wanted or wanting to leave, we are relying on a player who has never played cb before to shore up our defence, we haven't replaced Di Maria, and are completely short up top.

Even if we scramble a few players in in the next few days, this summer has been another mess transfer wise. How long before LVG starts saying that he is now happy with his squad, or that developing existing players into roles we are lacking in was always the philosophy? We bought last summer to shore up the CL money, but now it looks like keeping costs low before the club is inevitable sold again is the order of the day.

I would argue that an out and out striker is of more importance than a winger at this point in time. We have a lot of pace in the team now; and while I think Pedro would have been an upgrade it seems to me that we were never that serious about signing him in the first place.

A striker has to be a priority.

Do you not think that the whole media frenzy around every single player that we are slightly interested in means that we just get to find out about it more now? We try and keep things quiet but it is not easy, United are talked about more than any other club.

I just read an article about the players Ed Woodward has 'missed out on' since he took over, if we had signed them all we would have a squad of about 150 players, so obviously a lot of the players we are linked with we aren't going to buy, that's just how the media are these days.

I am gutted about Otemandi and Pedro as I really like them as players. Howerver, we have to believe that the club and manager are making the right choices.
Both players divided opinion on here anyway so maybe the right choice on valuation and impact they would make has been made. Only time will tell. They could flop in the PL and we will be grateful (I do doubt this though).
By the end of the window we may be wondering what all the fuss was about if we bring in some quality additions.
Still pushing the mantra of keep the faith. no matter how frustrating!

Not sure how anyone can say Pedro isn't worth £22 million at 27 so the whole value looks like the old no value in the market rubbish. I can understand if LVG has decided to play a different system or sign someone in a different role but at the moment just find it hard to understand as both Otamendi and Pedro would walk into our starting 11. Knee jerk reaction but hard to swallow when our rivals are signing players that we need. If Pedro joins Chelsea, there's no real strategy on our part about it. There's no special plan in place, no special alternative, neither is there a rabbit that will come out of our hat. Forget Muller, forget a striker. Noone is available. Missing Pedro was real tragic. Our only championship winning scoring threat lies in the feet of a 21 year old boy. You and your partner agree a price you are willing to pay, you make a couple of offers below the asking price as in your view the house is not worth the asking price and you can put the money you save towards other things like decorating the potential new house or investing in other areas. You don't get the house because someone else viewed the asking price acceptable. You move on and look at other houses.

That's basically all that's happened. Calm down. The world hasn't ended, a player the club never publicly declared interest in May move to a rival, that's life.

Hi everyone, first time poster but a very long time reader. Hats go off to all EDs for such a great rumour site!

I just wanted to state that reports were coming through early this morning about Pedro deal being off and now Skysports have confirmed we have dropped interest. I just wanted to know is it literally because we never offered the money upfront or is it to something bigger than that. ??

Iv seen the muller reports but i know that's deal is hard to come by especially with how Bayern are not budgin on their stance.

Does anyone have any insight to this as i was sure Pedro was a done deal.

Thanks again to all the EDs, keep up the good work 👍🏾

Reports seem to be surfacing that we have dropped our interest in Pedro and he now seems likely to move to Chelsea.
It seems a very strange time to pull out of a deal as there seemed to be genuine interest in the player from our side and the deal looked almost done. in fact it appeared 'almost done' for quite a long time.
I'm sure he would have strengthened our side but I'm not sure whether he would have been the best solution. Perhaps there are developments moving forward elsewhere? I certainly hope that is the case!
I'm not sure whether the eds or anyone else can shed any light on this?

19 Aug 2015 12:04:18
So it looks like Pedro is off to Chelsea then. Why do we take so long with these things. Same thing with Otamendi. If there is a reasonable release fee just pay it and get the deal done.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

19 Aug 2015 12:24:02
I'm not that bothers about both to be fair. Only issue with Pedro not signing is that we may be stuck for a while with Mata on the right. That said, maybe Muller or Robben could be on the cards.

Otamendi - not worth the money and the fact we play with 2 holding midfielders means that our CB's won't be as exposed. We just need to move Mata and Rooney out of the starting 11, I also don't like the look of Romero.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 12:30:18
I'm sure if we really wanted both players then deals would have been wrapped up by now.

Maybe pursuing alternative targets or waiting to confirm CL qualification . or both.

Hey all, Liverpool fan here.

I was wondering what the mood is here about your striking options? As far as I can see Rooney will have to start every game (with the possible exception of the League Cup), he's got no replacements on the bench and will suffer burn out. Couple this with the fact that he's had little impact in your first three games anyway and it adds up to you guys struggling to score the goals you need to challenge for the title?

Am I wrong in this? Are there strikers out there you can realistically get who will solve this problem? I'm interested to know what Utd fans are thinking?

So Pedro has just signed for Chelsea. What happened there? Ed 002 called it in July that he/she thought that Pedro would move to Chelsea. sly sports saying we've dropped all interest in pedro, rumours he's on his way to Chelsea, sack ed woodward a complete waste of space that man, haggling over a few million for a top player now another top player joins one of our main rivals, absolute joke our club.

Believable1 Unbelievable2

19 Aug 2015 12:05:41
Pedro is a "top player"? I don't think so. He is decent but that's just about it. Also I don't get what he would have added to the team that we don't already have. Would rather see Pereira and Lingard being given a chance and Januzaj get regular gametime.

Abusing club staff for not paying over what the club valued a player at is rather childish mate. We need to learn from the mistakes we made with Falcao and Di Maria last year.

Good post Redfaith. Why pay over the odds for another player we don't necessarily need. What would happen to mata, januzaj, herrera etc?

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 12:31:41
Lingard and pereira haven't had a look in and will probs go out on loan so we definitely need a right side forward if we are going to play 433 and for 22m pedro was a steal and wld hv been ideal. Well probs end up panic buying now like we did last year on someone like gaitan or lavezzi not good enough any of them. Last season we were all shouting for cuadardo before he went to Chelsea and before I get abuse I don't believe mourinho has gave him a fair chance so we can't say he doesn't handle the prem I think he would be a good shout.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 12:51:05
Adnan/redfaith

With the exception of Janusaj ,mata and herrera can not play on the wing so Pedro's purchase is an improvement to our team given the fact that right wing has been up for grabs for almost 7 years now.

If we are truly passing on him for whoever reason then i hope we are in for a Reus or Griezeman type player but highly unlikely.

A lot of reports over the media that Pedro is going to Chelsea now. I know the media aren't ITK but if we have genuinely missed out on signing him because of
1. We were haggling over a couple of million pound
OR
2. We are wasting more transfer time bidding on u obtainable players first Ramos now Muller.
this transfer window may have gone from looking very good to back to the good old days of Moyes. I really hope LVG doesn't think a game against championship level opposition is an indication that this squad is strong enough. the performance last night was decent but we played against a team that are at least one tier below the EPL and Vrugge came and tried to give us a game leaving the pitch wide open. Better organised sides will sit deep and that's where we have struggled so I'm hoping the Pedro decision hasn't been determined but one result last night. can anyone think of a better more experienced player available out there for that price. Eds big statement of doing in the transfer window what other teams can't so far looks like letting your rivals sign players that we could definitely use whilst allowing unobtainable players use our name to get a better contract. It could all be wrong but with so many outlets reporting Pedro to Chelsea and we were defiantly in for him makes us look like amateurs in the market again.

As one of the eds mentioned, we were priced out of the otamendi transfer. This means lvg obviously wanted and still wants a cb but the ones he wants are not available. This is far from the case of him thinking that what we have is adequate. This is something i believe happens more than we think. A club wants a player but not for above a certain cost and nothing comes of it. No newspaper reports, no Twitter chatter.
Hummels, ramos and otamendi were all looked at and for different reasons they are not going to sign. Blind has been doing a great job so far but positioning and interceptions are not where he's weak. Its when he'll be pitted against some one like lukaku, costa, diouf or gomis, that he'll lose the physical battle. Also considering shaw's forward ventures, blind could be exposed against pacy wingers. The possible problems are there for all to see, including lvg Ofcourse. Sure there are so many names one could throw around but i think we're looking for the finished product here and there are very very few of those available at a cost we'll be willing to pay.
We also have rojo to come back he could be the brute force cb we need in certain games.
Thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

19 Aug 2015 11:49:26
With news arising that Chelsea are winning the battle for Pedro, and Otamendi seems to be blues bound. Anyone else getting the feeling our recruitment drive is done for now? If so, it has been a very decent window with a much stronger midfield but I am concerned about the goal scoring options and I can't help feeling the defence is still fragile.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

19 Aug 2015 12:05:41
I still feel as though we have something up our sleeve, hence why we're not going all out for these guys. Hoping its Laporte and Muller, why would Ed Woodward go to Spain in the final days of the Pedro negotiations just for LVG to pull out of the deal?

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 11:48:32
Very long time reader but first time poster. So Chelsea have hijacked pedro this morning and city appear to have otamendi. These two have been continually linked all summer. Just shows you can't second guess what's going on right now.
Do we think this will be our squad for the season? If not realistically who is out there and available?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

19 Aug 2015 11:39:15
First Otamendi and now Pedro. Two deals hijacked within a week.

What will haggling over a few million give Woodward?

I just hope he has something special lined up or we are going to look really really stupid.

Really thought Pedro could have excelled at United.

A grumpy Shan.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

19 Aug 2015 12:13:12
Were we ever in for otamendi? only the press said that we were and i would never have paid £30 plus million for him anyway.
Won't lose any sleep over pedro either. We aren't talking about a global super star and he may have hindered the development of janujaz and perraira also.
Was never convinced that we needed another wide player anyway. Would much rather us look to strengthen our CF options as i have never considered rooney to be a natural CF and our alternatives aren't good enough for a club with our ambitions

So Pedro set to sign for Chelsea. very bizarre turn up for the books there.
However, if this happens, then we have allowed it to happen for a reason. Will be very interesting now to see what happens.

Apparently, part of it, was LVG treatment of De Gea, although I think that's just media drivel.

So its one of Muller, Bale and errrr. struggling now

Great game and so many players having good games. Smalling was immense, Darmian and Shaw looked quality, Blind gets grief for being a utility player but he has been very classy. Sneiderking was everywhere, Januzaj looked promising, and Memphis showed his class. A couple of different observations from me|

1. Rooney was better, had some good touches and could have scored. I watched him closely and the issue for me was that for a lot of the time he wasn't mobile. I don't mean dropping deep, I mean he didn't seem to be making runs. Hopefully as he gets sharper and his understanding develops with his partner we will see him improve further.

2. I found Mata very frustrating, he simply doesn't have the pace out there. When you saw what was happening with Memphis and Shaw on the left you realised that despite Darmian's efforts, Mata doesn't have the pace to keep up and inject the temp needed. Great player, but wrong position.

3. How good were the Bruges fans singing in English? Brilliant

Great result last night. I think Carrick is struggling so far this season, slow, poor passing. I think the introduction of Bastian and Morgan (easier to spell) may have effected him. I can only see a place on the bench for him this season and start in some early round cup games. I'm not slagging him off i think he has been a great player for us but i think Morgan will continue to start and you can't leave Bastian out

Believable2 Unbelievable0

I'm going to come out and say it. Smalling is one of the best CB's in the Premier League on current form.

Last night i think what we got to see most was the potential for our future. Memphis, Shaw and Januzaj all had brilliant games, with Smalling, Darmian, Schneiderlin and Mata having good games as well.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

19 Aug 2015 11:01:36
Harry,

I posted something similar last night I think, the mixture of experience and youth seems to blend really well, we have different players in age ranges 18-22, 23-28 and then 29-34 which gives the squad a pretty nice feel to it, and also bodes well for the future.

Agree about Smalling, the potential has always been there but injuries have always stopped him when he has come towards showing it, hopefully he has got to an age where the injuries slow down and he can be a regular fixture in our back 4.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 09:49:16
I have a feeling that either Mata or Herrera will leave before the end of the window and as much as I like both immensely I hope its Mata.
Herrera just offers a bit more. Both seem to be genuinely nice lads and its a shame but truth be told they are to good to be bench players.
LVG obviously wants Schweinsteiger in there, as he said so last night, and Schneiderlin is going to be the other. Januzaj, Carrick, Memphis, PEDRO, Young, all playing for the same sort of positions.

Its a pity, but something has to give I suppose.

Believable0 Unbelievable2

Could be in the shop window, hence why he is getting the games (stranger things have happened). He doesn't contribute enough for me, he stifles our play and would suit a team in Europe, especially as LVG doesn't want him in the hole. There was a lot of talk about Valencia being in for him, maybe when the Otamendi deal happens, (depending on what they owe for Negredo)?

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 11:39:20
GDS2 yes that Mata, but we know LVG wants pace which Mata doesn't have, and can you see him being content on the bench. Although saying that, since I wrote that post Pedro has signed for Chelsea so its all irrelevant anyway :)

Bayern don't want to sell Muller and don't really have a need to raise money or anything.

Bilbao we all know are extremely difficult to deal with and trying to sign their player just 2 weeks before the window ends is almost impossible.

after watching him lose the ball last night, then sprint to win it back and continue that sprint down the right wing to cross for Rooney I am inclined to agree. 19 Aug 2015 08:02:11
As unlikely as getting Muller is, if the rumours are to be believed that United have tabled a further bid of circa £60million, I think it's great to see Bayern on the receiving end of something similar to their medicine.

I dislike with a passion the manner in which they have destroyed Dortmund over recent years and for one would love to see them lose some of their prized assets at a younger age.

With regards to Muller himself the German league is one of the most predictable leagues in Europe and maybe he needs a bigger challenge?

United fans should also stop whinging about United trying to sign "impossible players". We do not know what signals United are getting from the Muller camp - are they full fat or reduced ( sorry lol ), but United are seemingly trying to lure a world class player at a time when fans have been moaning for some time that we don't sign world class players. Make your freekin mind up some of you!

I think its bs IMO. impossible in my view for Bayern to sanction a move no matter what the money is at this stage of the window and not sure he will ever leave them as he is bayern through and through.

Its like Barcelona selling Neymar or Suarez. Some of these guys are just not for sale period, but the media frenzy loves to make up stories every day during the transfer window.

i.e chelsea now supposedly will hijack the pedro deal. Never in a million years will he go there under Mourinho and where do they play him and who sits. they already have too many wingers.

Common sense and logic i guess as none of these clubs need to sell and financial Gorillas.

Agree1 Disagree0

I can only think we are getting encouragement from somewhere to continue the chase. but then I am sure we got encouragement in the Ramos debacle also.
I also note that we apparently made bids for Bale this summer at circa £100m. Would we be so naïve as to just go in with these offers without some sort of positive flirting to begin with.
I appreciate a lot of it is clubs posturing and playing with media to save face etc.

To sum up, I suppose there is never smoke without fire!

Sometimes on these pages I think we need to appreciate and look at the postives rather than always looking for negatives. Two full backs very impressive and quick and comfortable on ball. Smalling most improved player at the club has really taken the mantle. Blind may not be people's choice and will face bigger tests but up till now very very impressive. Schneiderlin covers seriousb ground tidy footballer and clean tackler while good presser. Depay a player I've followed for last few years has huge potential really excited to watch him grow into no 7 shirt.Young adnan has undoubted quality and gives us another option. We are defensively best team in league over last 20 odd games its no fluke its because lvg has worked on this and the players have understood his set up. Well drilled solid hard to beat but with pace in full back area in particular. We still need at least two more additions but I think a lot to look forward to also. I've been a lvg supporter from the start and I continue to be and I actually think the job he's done taking everything into consideration has been a good one. Any manager that coaches Munich,Barcelona and United has something about him and lvg has a plan.

Spot on. I can't understand the criticism of LVG. We don't have the knowledge enough to criticize him. He is a daring leader doing what's best for the club and I absolutely try to think there must be reasons he does things which is beyong my capacity to understand. The team is really solid. Two more additions and we got ourselves a rocking squad.

PS: The frustration of that boy Depay during the interview to not score that third, what a hungry lad! United deserves players like these.

19 Aug 2015 01:33:12
I beg your pardon was it not a question as most aren't as big as the prem like the Scottish league, rather confusing how you felt the need to snap at a question as I only ask as I have no knowledge on the Belgium league jeez

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed007's Note - Who mentioned the Scottish league?}

19 Aug 2015 01:35:14
And where would mediocre Celtic finish in the prem just a thought

Agree1 Disagree2

{Ed007's Note - Well they're in the same round as Utd in the CL which is what you oinked about, so what does that say about Utd? Where would Utd finish in the Spanish or German league, qualifying for the CL and you're not champions? Talk about scrimping and scraping and clinginging onto coat tails pffft.}

19 Aug 2015 02:06:44
What a demeening statement Big Poppa Red. Brugge deserve to be in the competition as much as we do. It is not their fault they play in what is considered an inferior league and that Sky doesn't line their pockets with £billions of TV cash.

I have watched for years as these types of clubs have been belittled by supporters and when it comes to playing them on their own patch many clubs falter because they buy into the fan hype that they have a god given right to be better than these clubs just by turning up.

I remember for years in the CL Celtic and Rangers in Scotland would be looked down upon because they came into the competition via a two horsed ailing league and fans of certain clubs would underestimate them until it came to playing them on their own patch and then stage fright took over and 'star' players become overawed at the occasions. Don't underestimate nobdody in CL.

Moral of the story, show some respect.

My point is you keep mentioning we finished fourth but the only reason Celtic get champions league year after year is because they have no competition in there league, in terms of the German and Spanish league at the present we wouldn't win it but we would certainly be up there, I've always seen Rangers as the better team in Scotland anyway, and they will be back soon then God help you finishing 2nd in a awful league just my opinion

Agree1 Disagree2

19 Aug 2015 02:21:37
Maze, I don't think Big Poppa was really thinking that deeply about this issue. Seemed an innocent enough question to me, from someone who readily admitted he didn't know anything about the standard of football in Belgium.

I appreciate it's hard to convey a way of asking something on a keyboard, as opposed to speaking to someone face to face, but some on here can be so quick to light on people for innocuous comments.

Ps. Bond, you'll not have to worry about Celtic qualifying next year anyway. The sheepshaggers are back! :)

Just as an aside if Celtic (or Rangers for that matter) were playing in the PL getting the same income as the PL clubs they would be challenging for the title in 3-5 years.

They both have guys at the club who would empty thier own pockets for success such as the way they are passionate about their club. They have fans who turn up in their droves week in week out for matches and who readily purchase merchandise.

There is a reason why the FA would never entertain letting these guys into the EPL.

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - who do Celtic have at their club who would empty their own pockets for success? Their owners operate the club for profit.}

How did Celtic come into this? It's almost as if BPR realised he had been slapped down in his first post and then tried to change the subject as Ed007 is a Celtic fan. Pathetic.

Hahaha, fair play Brendan. Ignore all the nonsense above. I am quite surprised to see MAZE involved in an argument though.

Why what did I say I said pathetic as the poster also put I'm no bully I'd love to know what I said wrong ed i feel I'm the one being cyber bullied just because I asked a question and was I not called pathetic in the first instance

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - you were extremely condescending regarding an opposing team and then when it was pointed out you tried to get personal with your replies to Ed007 regarding the team he supports rather than make any kind of real point in response. Then your response to another poster was just a whole raft of personal insults and had nothing to do with the thread at all, just an attempt to have a dig. Instead of bitching at people who disagree with you, why don't you just make a case for your side of the argument?}

Maze I'm reacting to what 0007 as said, my first post was an honest question and the 0007 thought the need to bite at me saying United finished fourth, so does that make them as good as United or does it mean there league is slightly easy then ours, my point is if Chelsea arsenal man city United and brudge was in the same league would they finish top four, what I was trying to see is how good our performance actually was based on our competition but everyone seems to of overlooked my question

19 Aug 2015 13:01:46
Fair enough ed I'm not going to argue I just thought I got jumped on for a question that should of armed nobody but all the afters was banter I have a lot of family who are Celtic fans so used to having a crack at each other but if I've upset anyone I apologise

In this day and age money is scarce in the Scottish game so I can understand why the likes of Lawwell and Desmond can't readily invest the way they want to but if they had the income of the PL clubs along with their fan base I have no doubt the club would spend and challenge.

Do you think they would compete if they got into the EPL Ed in your opinion?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - It's never going to happen and I don't want it to but I don't doubt that if Celtic were in the EPL they would be challenging for the title within five years and would become one of the top sports 'brands' around the world.}

19 Aug 2015 00:28:34
One thing I noticed from tonights match was in the build up. There was something about Sweinsteiger and his interaction with the other players. He looked like he'd been part of the team for years, the other players were reacting to what he did. I believe he will be one of our most important players in years, both on and off the pitch. The guy is pure class.

Granted Brugge are no world beaters but they looked like they had pace to cause problems if we let them. This is by far the best I have seen United play in the last 18 months even better than the Spurs and Liverpool games last season.

There still looks like their are issues to iron out but all in all it was a good performance and it should pretty much put the tie to bed. Glad to Memphis off and running which will hopefully settle his nerves in the future and the big Fellaini showed why he will be a key feature in the first 11 this season in my opinion.

Long may performaces like that continue. It was throughly enjoyable.

Credit when credit is due GDS2. I am not a negative person, I am a realist. I want to see us get back to the pinnacle of the side who won the CL in Moscow and not see us whimper for years like Liverpool and Arsenal that's why I am a firm believer in rectifying things quickly.

If we performed to that level for the remainder of the season I would happily eat humble pie but going on the first two performances and 97.6 per cent of last seasons let's just say the jury is still well and truly out.

tempo was much better tonight some signs of what this squad can do once lvg let's them.

3 games in and you can see it coming together.

i will say it again i have been very criticle of our our squad over the the last few years but tjis is a good team.

if bale of reus had of got them goals ?

19 Aug 2015 01:16:26
I agree jred, just having a better midfield makes everything tick, we have some squad there now, 3 more players and we would be as close to perfect as we could be this season, if we don't get them then we might be a little short but will maybe get them next summer.

What makes me happy is seeing shaw, depay, januzaj, Smalling all playing in the team, young lads who we are going to see grow together, add to that pereira and Wilson and put that with the experienced lads and then the 24-27 bracket and we have a very strong mix in the squad of youth and experience. Lvg gets a lot of stick but what he leaves will be a lot better than what he got when he started.

So much better. High tempo. Loads of aggression. And we seem to have someone with a bit of swagger and arrogance in memphis. And he can finish so well. Mostly positive but only concern was another lacklustre display by rooney.
Hopefully we can finish the job off next Wednesday.
I think we're all much happier tonight. Well done to all the players.

Great point jred. I think tonight we saw a Depay who was told to go about his business naturally as opposed to being constricted. He looked very sharp tonight.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Aug 2015 23:50:22
Can someone please point out where Blind misplaced a pass? He surely had 100% success rate including that pass to Depay. Smalling man of the match imo. Depay had his moment perfectly and should settle him down a bit. Schneiderlin did a lot of unnoticed dirty work too. No one had a bad game, if I'm being critical Rooney looked not sharp enough yet apart from a couple of good touches and carrick also. I'd like to see Muller who could play right or through the centre, zlatan if I'm being really greedy and 1 of Hummels or Garay if I'm really going to chow down on a huge cream Cake and smear it over me.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

19 Aug 2015 07:12:18
